The Angels announced this afternoon they’ve claimed right-hander Kyle Tyler off waivers from the Padres. San Diego had designated him for assignment this week in advance of setting their Opening Day roster.
It’s a full-circle moment for Tyler, who made his first five major league appearances with Anaheim last season. He tossed 12 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and walks apiece. Tyler only generated swinging strikes on 4.7% of his offerings in his big league cameo, but he had strong strikeout and walk numbers in the minors.
Tyler started 14 of his 20 appearances between Double-A Rocket City and Triple-A Salt Lake. He worked 86 innings of 3.66 ERA ball between the two levels, punching out a solid 25.3% of opponents against an impressive 6.9% walk rate. Baseball America ranked the University of Oklahoma product #39 in the Angels farm system this winter, praising his above-average command.
Despite the solid minor league showing, the Angels designated Tyler for assignment last month when they signed Ryan Tepera. He landed with the Red Sox on waivers, but Boston designated him themselves just two days later. This time, the Friars grabbed him. His stay in San Diego lasted a couple more weeks than did his time with the Sox, but he now finds himself back in Orange County. Tyler has all three minor league option years remaining, so the Angels can stash him at the upper levels as rotation or long relief depth — if they keep him on the 40-man roster this time around.
In a corresponding move, the Angels placed righty Cooper Criswell on the 60-day injured list. The 25-year-old made his first big league start last August but otherwise spent the year in the upper minors. Criswell has been dealing with shoulder soreness this spring and evidently won’t be ready for MLB action until at least the second week of June.
Can he play LF?
He is back with his organization the L.A Angels.
No, but neither can anyone else on the team
Exactly, the new team need…LF
Whew, For a minute there, I thought the Angels were in trouble
I’m thinking Maddon will flip Adell and Marsh position wise.
That would be wise I think.
Wise would be Trout in LF, Marsh in CF, and Adell in RF
Trout in LF is a ways away. Probably not this year, maybe 2023 or 2024 and beyond.
not doing last night was so dumb. you experiment in spring and and set a team to win in the regular season.
Joe Maddon has to experiment during the season. That way he looks like a genius when something actually works.
Nice! Now let’s bring back Packy! Lol
orange2001- Packy Naughton is happy where he is playing at/ organization.
letting him go was so dumb when team is full of no-good infielders..
Happy to see him back…hope he sticks around this time
How about signing a left fielder …. For gods sake get a left fielder
Always feel a bit for guys in this situation. Minor leaguer getting sent around, constantly looking for new housing, shipping his stuff.
I read this as Kyle Tucker and nearly fell out of my chair
That’d be awesome ha ha.
I read it as Mike Trout, then Tyle Kyler, then Dikembe Mutombo.
I guess what I’m saying is would anyone be interested in tutoring me?
I didn’t see the game last night but I heard Adell was a train wreck, air mailing a throw to the plate. So we need a left fielder I guess.
Prov-He was off the rails. The ball was no where near the plate.
What else happened?
he hit hard but fell short like trout’s.
I was at the game. His routes on a couple of balls were atrocious. One that could have definitely been an out got by him for a double. Another occasion he threw the ball halfway between home and first. It was a horrible night for him.
The route running is my concern. I really hope he turns it around. He’s such a nice guy and clearly talented. But when the lights are brightest, he tends to freeze.
why did maddon play him left when he has been playing right field all spring? also why did he pull ohtani so early? he has been ready to pitch since march!
Ward was supposed to be the left fielder, but was put on the IL early yesterday.
Adell was awesome in ST and he looked like he had really improved. Last night at the plate he looked lost and sad. I truly hope that he turns it around fast. He has a world of talent.
I am not sure why the Angels are trying to make Adell in LF. In the ST game against the Dodgers, he took one of the worst routes I have ever seen. The ball slices differently when playing in LF than in RF. He has not made the adjustment yet. Not sure why the Angels want him in LF or why they waited so long if that was the plan. He was ok in RF.
Adell struck out 3 times and was awful, but most of the offense was horrible. Tepera was also horrible. It was one game, no need to overreact., but put Adell back in RF ASAP. I have seen enough blunders in a couple games.
tepera is a cutter/ slider pitcher. both home runs were off fastballs. asstros were waiting for fastballs and the catcher asked for them both times. after that he was good. team planning failed!
Adell is not in the lineup tonight, and Marsh is in LF.. so that’s at least a start..
I was there. The throw was becuase rendon told him 1st base at the last second.
The routes were bad thoguh, that’s the big concern.
1st?!?! Nobody told him throw to first. Lmao
In that situation it’s either throw to 2nd or home. No one is telling him to throw to first.
Routes were terrible on both LF doubles, also he overran the catch made near the FP and the allowed 1st row HR, both cases his glove hand was above/behind his head reaching back, clearly misjudged those fly balls.
People rave about his “talent” and “high ceiling” but he’s not passing the eye test fielding or hitting…More bloopers than highlights thus far.
MVP – “People rave about his “talent” and “high ceiling” but he’s not passing the eye test fielding or hitting…More bloopers than highlights thus far.”
I’ve said that since his ridiculous debut in 2020. He supposedly got squared away last year in AAA but apparently not. Maybe it’s just big league jitters and he will settle in. We will know in a couple weeks if that’s the case.
I’ve said several times to trade him for pitching while he still has value but got ridiculed for it (Halo11, et al). His value will reduce as other teams see is is not living up to the hype.
Oh, and I was accused of “hating” Adell for suggesting he get traded for pitchers who can help us now. I don’t hate the guy. I don’t know the guy. I think he is either still not ready with some potential or he was over-hyped from the beginning.
So, did the Padres technically DFA him before the season began, or will they be unable to Nottingham him when/if the Angels designate him again?
I feel for guys like this. Minor leaguer who has probably had to ship gear to multiple places, sleep on multiple couches, and have no certainty about what the next day or week would bring.
Hopefully for his sake and ours, he’s here to stay.
angels need a starting shortstop! fletcher is a very good player but he cannot cover the area good shortstops cover. as halo11 has been preaching he cannot cover his right side as it happened last night.
Halo insists Fletch can’t go to his left. In my opinion, Fletch goes to his left just fine… he’s just better going right.
The Angels are placing Fletch up the middle where the batter is most likely to hit. So they must disagree with Halo. MLBTR poster or MLB analytics staff and MLB coaches with 100+ years of experience… your choice.
that was new shift and he could not cover his right side. oh, yeah, all those math geniuses led the team to the playoffs last fifteen years or so! i have been critical of the moves the geniuses made for last 10 years and many people said i was wrong to criticize and not be patient. i have been perfectly right every single year after year. those are fools!
To be clear, Fletcher, the 2021 Gold Glove Finalist with an OAA of +9, can’t go to his left or right. And you are 10/10 in predicting Angels outcomes. Just for fun Nostradamus, who is going to win The Masters, NBA Finals and Stanley Cup? Thanks in advance for making millionaires of us all.
Are we really ready to let Detmers pitch so early in the lineup? Thor hasn’t pitched since Sunday, are they really treating the entire pitching staff with kid gloves? I don’t get a chance to watch games, but I can’t imagine any good reason why Ohtani was pulled after 80 pitches looking at the stats..
Sandoval had his start pushed back until Tuesday due to arm fatigue. They have 3 righties and 3 lefties. They want to alternate the right hand and left hand starters in the rotation. Thor will go tomorrow vs Verlander. Should be a good one.
Ohh yes that should be a good battle. Looking forward to that.
I think you meant rotation. I think sometimes they give a small drop in pitch count 1st start of the year because the regular season games can be more tiring. 80 pitches is probably more than most first starts in a year with a short spring training.
A pitcher going to the Angels organization is like a death sentence for their arm, right?
Some people, like Marsh, can instinctively track fly balls. He has probably been proficient since an early age. Adell does not track balls well. He has improved, but he will never be more than MLB average at best, in my opinion.
If Adell played football, he would be a cornerback, not wide receiver. He is super athletic, but he has bad hands.
Why is Detmers in the rotation?
Because he’s one of the Angels’ top six starting pitchers in the organization. He looked great in spring and pitched pretty good tonight despite a bit of a rocky start.
yeah, it just happened! fletcher cannot cover his right side! sav e him and return him to second, dummies!
