The Yankees have signed Ronald Guzman to a minor league deal, journalist Junior Matrille reports (Twitter link). Guzman will be invited to the Yankees’ big league spring camp.
A notable prospect during his time in the Rangers farm system, Guzman couldn’t translate the hitting prowess he displayed in the minors over to his 826 PA in the majors, as he batted only .227/.304/.414 and struck out 238 times. After three seasons of failing to truly break through as a regular in the Texas lineup, Guzman’s 2021 season was cut short after only seven games, as he suffered a torn meniscus while playing left field and had to undergo season-ending surgery.
Ironically, Guzman’s greatest day as a big leaguer took place in Yankee Stadium, when he hit three home runs to lead the Rangers to a 12-7 victory over the Bronx Bombers on August 10, 2018. Perhaps Yankees GM Brian Cashman had a memory of that game in mind when signing Guzman, or maybe the club is simply taking a flier of a minor league deal to see if Guzman can unlock his potential in a new environment.
Should he perform well in Spring Training, Guzman’s left-handed bat could earn him some playing time on a Yankee roster that is deep in right-handed hitters. In theory, Guzman could work as a complement to the right-handed hitting Luke Voit at first base, or Guzman could pick up some DH at-bats when Giancarlo Stanton is in the outfield.
Yankees fans wanted Olson instead they get Guzman. I feel bad for them…oh, wait. Never mind.
As annoying as the last couple of days have been, Guzman is Chris Gittens replacement.
Don’t cut yourself on all of that edge, bro.
Yankees over Brewers in 2027
There are not the deals we want.
All these Minor League deals tonight and nothing for MLB Network to break in to report,
Didn’t he hit 3 home runs in a game against us? That all looked pretty good.
He does love your stadium…
Duck Buckin Fent –
Yes he did.
My wife was mad at me that night bc I was swearing at the TV.
Now I’m divorced and replenished.
Thank you Mr Guzman for helping set me free.
Thought that was him. Killed us that entire series.
Pro tip: several ex-wives later, I have upgraded to a live in girlfriend.
Best part about living by yourself in your own home is getting to number 2 with the bathroom door open.
Alpha Gorilla mentality.
@LordD: These might not be the deals you want, but they represent the Hal Wilpon philosophy.
Dude, I can’t unread that!
The Condor!!! Love that dude. Good to see him get another chance, really unfortunate career so far
HE’S TALL
AND HANDSOME
I guess the Dollar Store is having specials today.
BOOM!
Interesting pickup…He’s not really any good, can’t hit lefties at all, looks like the guy you bring up when your regular 1B in out for a few weeks, then DFA, but, if this puts to rest the Freddy Freeman rumors…
Not much of a hitter it’s true, unbelievably talented defender actually. Honestly I feel like he got hurt before he really got one last chance with us and he might have been a late bloomer. He will have a week where he looks like a big leaguer, then nothing for a long time. I wish he got to play one more in Texas.
Wow, GM Ca$hman dumpster diving again! Not reeling in the big fish. (Story or Freeman) or trading for Olson. What a big surprise. Smh
So much for the reports of me signing within 24 hours after the lockout ended. It’s been double that already!
@Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman- it’s really funny since I was the one that said you we’re signing on Monday. Now you’ll probably sign tonight.
Fear not. I’m sure Billy would love to get rid of the A’s portion of Elvis Andrus’ salary
Guzzy! Love this, just hope he can stay healthy (i.e not get stuck in LF when he’s a 1B… Woodward).
Ha I totally forgot about that… He was not good out there.
I’m blanking on whether it was a torn Achilles or hamstring or what, but yeah, that OF shet was dreadful. Dude’s a gifted defensive 1B, but trading for Lowe forced him out of position.
Lowe is a much more professional hitter and 1B defense doesn’t matter so much. I really hope we don’t got get Olsen I actually think Nathaniel has one more gear to unlock.
Thank youuuuuuuuuu
I am 100% team keep Lowe rn, because not only is the price for Olsen gonna be downright silly, but I also think that Lowe has some good potential if he could find more consistency in his approach. I’m curious how the new hitting coaches are going to affect him, definitely see him as a high-riser this season.
He’s protected by Semien and Seager now. He is going to get some pitches to hit.
@Rangers29
Guzman, Dom Smith, Rhys Hoskins. Why do managers think that First Baseman can play LF?
These are Maintenance Moves…Be Patient. Correa, Freeman, Olson, Story, Castillio, and others are still out there.
Well, Locastro was an MLB deal.
But – yes – this is; whatever.

So
Much
Homers
Yeah, exactly!
Let’s be honest he’s gonna be booed outta Yankees stadium at some point lol.
Let’s be even more honest. He’s probably not even gonna take a step onto Yankee Stadium.
@FSF: I disagree. Ronald Guzman will be Voit’s platoon partner and defensive caddy.
Just curious, when they yanks really want someone ( ie offer the most term and cash by far ) have they ever lost out by the player turning down the big dough and lights ?
Cliff Lee 2010
Thanks. Do you happen to recall what he signed for and what reportedly was turned down , in term and $. ?
I believe he signed a 5/110 but it was rumored the Yanks were willing to go as high as 125. Apparently he has a special needs child and the family was very happy with a school in the Philly area where they had already settled. It probably didn’t help that some Yankee fan poured beer on his wife’s head at Yankee Stadium a couple of years earlier.
Greg Maddux
Thanks. Do you happen to recall what he signed for and what reportedly was turned down , in term and $. ?
I don’t remember the details. I do remember him saying he thought the Braves were the better team.
Maddux never officially received the offer because the guy that was supposed to meet him in NY had a heart attack, according to Maddux. So, he left NY & took the Braves offer.
I think he was scared…. There aren’t many people who are used to winning that much and it’s tough on the weakest of people. Ya know? So he appropriately found ATL where he won 1 ring and lost several, comfortably.
Calling one of the greatest pitchers of a generation, who was successful everywhere he went including big market Chicago scared is one of the most moronic takes anyone could ever have.
Very true. But that was a lifetime ago when $5M was around the top superstar rate.
MLB had a chance to shine this weekend with several big name free agent signings. Hasn’t happened and now they get to compete with NFL free agency which usually moves much quicker. Why is it so insanely slow? They had a month before the lockout, and then 3.5 months during the lockout to think about it.
The day isn’t over yet and also Brady unretiring,
Cashman sending shockwaves throughout baseball by acquiring the man they call…”CONDOR”.
Yesssssss!!!
My Bleacher Creature brother, you are misguided lol
Matt Olson rumours ending up being Ronald Guzman.
“SORRY SIR WE’RE ALL OUT OF OLSON TODAY…MAY I INTEREST YOU IN SOME DISCOUNT CONDOR GUZMAN???”
yankees Sure to stay below the Tax Line……. Keep finding guys who stay around the Mendoza line…….
Gary Sanchez is gonna hit .180 this year watch oooof lololol
That’s right B-Cash, you show Freeman we aren’t going to wait around forever! We are the freakin’ Yankees baby! Flash those singles!
Cashman’s rap video would have a smart car with evo green paint and solar – powered – spinner rims to conserve energy.
CA$H GØD
His produced single just dropped: youtube.com/watch?v=23QEDW9mTkY
He’ll be the new Luke Voit But left handed
Dumpster diving Yankees
