The Yankees announced that outfielder Jeisson Rosario was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox. Rosario has been optioned to the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate.
The 22-year-old Rosario was designated for assignment earlier this week when the Sox needed a 40-man roster space to accommodate Trevor Story. Rosario began his career in the Padres farm system, and came to Boston as part of the August 2020 trade that saw Mitch Moreland dealt to San Diego.
Rosario has a .256/.366/.332 slash line over 1675 minor league plate appearances. He hasn’t shown much power thus far, and his offensive contributions have mostly come in the form of on-base skills and speed (with 48 steals in 77 chances). Rosario is considered a good defensive center fielder, however, and has also spent some time in right field and a handful of games as a left fielder.
🙂
Ninja Cash got his center fielder.
Trying to get back on Bloom stealing Whitlock? Not the same thing but it’s fun for both fanbases when the teams transact.
Take that Boston!!! That will teach you to take Whitlock.
Oh dear. Whatever shall we do??
It’s funny to me when these minor transactions happen some people are like who cares, AAA fodder! Then when a guy turns out to be a productive player on a rival. Omg how did they let that guy go.
Whitlock tore it up in minors, I don’t understand what the yanks; or, any other team who had the chance to pick him up thinking.
Idk, it seemed like a no brainer not picking him up in the Rule5.
They felt the need to protect Brooks Kriske instead.
I don’t think he played a lot in AAA though.
Coming back from TJ surgery, they thought they had others to protect. Mistakes happen with all clubs. Boston after 2020 had an early shot at him. Doubtful Cashman was trying to sneak him through waivers. The ironic part is there is no way Boston makes the playoffs to knock the Yankees out without him. The same can be said for other surprises like Hernandez and Renfroe but it is true in Whitlock’s case.
It will be interesting if Red Sox considers him in a hybrid relief/start role.
Considering the Sox made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, there’s probably at least a dozen Sox players whose contributions enabled them to make the postseason.
I’m on the minority but I want him in the 8th or 9th inning with Houck and Diekman.
True Fever. it was a team effort in September. Whitlock and Devers more than balanced out Barnes
Bloom had good case of buyer’s eye in 2021.. Watch him repeat in 2022.
Well, the Dodgers once had this kid named Clemente! Maybe because Branch Rickey knew of him.
Oh he’s left-handed. Never mind then. Good luck Jeisson.
Unique alternative spelling of Jason.
Or a unique alternative spelling of Gee-San.
Not a bad signing by the Yankees even though I can’t stand them.
Thanks!
@How About Them A’s- no worries, we can’t stand you either, enjoy last place for the next 20 years.
Thank goodness the Yankees claimed him. They’ll clean up that crazy hair he’s got…
Hey, I think some kids are playing on your lawn . . .
We’ll send them over to your lawn. Oh that’s right….you wouldnt want them either— you just like to pass judgement.
The curse of the Great Rosary has begun
Yanks grabbed him before NL teams got their crack. I would think the Marlins or Phillies are similarly desperate to add a glove-first CF to their 40-man. Mets, Brewers and Rockies might have had interest as well.
This is the next curse on the Red Sox. Won’t win another championship again.
Oh yes they will.. If Sale, Paxton and Wacha return to form, 2022 will be a repeat of 2018 for the Red Sox.
The 2023 replacement for Aaron Judge.
@bobtillman- not happening. I’m coming back in 2023. I’m signing an extension shortly.
To paraphrase the Professor: He’s 22. In 10 years he’s got a chance to be 32.
On base skills…..Well the Yankees are in desperate need of men who get on base and not be all or nothing types…..The Joey Gallo school of hitting failed New York. This is from a Red Sox fan who wants to see both squads go at it for the best team in baseball 2003 and 2004 were awesome.
After his promotion to AA, his OBP was just .335. Let’s see where it is after his next promotion.
P.S.
The Sox ranked 4th in OBP in the AL. The Yankees ranked 5th. Not much separation between the two.
Last season, Yankees ranked 5th in the AL and 9th overall in the league in OBP. That isn’t the issue. Situational hitting is.
Yes. Too many sub .200 hitters on the Yank’s roster. It is either bash or dash to the bench for the bombers. Not a championship formula.
Respectable pickup by the Yankees. Probably won’t amount to much, but that’s the nature of fringe players.
Does anyone know the offsetting 40-man move for the Yankees?
They had just released someone. Can’t remember who. But there was a spot open.
Yoan Aybar. Claimed by the White Sox.
Joe, do you see Gonzales making the 26-man? He hasn’t hit a lick since, coincidentally, 2017, when he hit an incredible .317 or whatever. I think either hebornLeraza will be in the starting roster though, & he seems to be more defensively sound.
With the rosters at 28 it’s almost a lock he makes it. I read on NJ.Com that Boone had strongly hinted at it without saying it.
In order for MarGo to make it they’ll need to open up 2 40 spots. One for him and one for the second catcher. Either him or Andujar for the extra slot but I imagine they would rather have Miggy playing every day at AAA.
Yeah, Joe, I did read Boone’s statements. I also read in the same statement where he spoke of being more like the Rays – which is the Yankees strongest desire: to be like a team they are the complete antithesis to, which all but guarantees failure. Hence the reason the will forever finish behind the team they aspire to each year.
It’s the same analogy (but reversed) as the Rays signing a top FA player, & signing him for 10 years at too much money, then stating: “This is what we need, top FAs like the Yankees so we can have big players for the big moments” and expecting success. They don’t have the ability to keep doing it so it’s stupid and fruitless to operate that way….same with the Yankees trying to do what the Rays do.
0I think you’re mixing apples and oranges. If Boone is the one saying it, then he is likely referring to lineup flexibility. If it was Cash, then he would’ve been talking about payroll and acquisitions.
I think he makes it. He might not last, but he’s a useful low-end guy that provides a lot of flexibility. I think the Yankees lack depth.
How about that Greg Bird?
.417/.588/1.000/1.588 with two home runs, a double, five walks and one strikeout.
I hope he does better than the last time he was crushing ST.
All he needs is to stay healthy and injury-free.
It’s spring training… at least that’s what Gary Sanchez and Gio are saying.
Bord bird bird bird is the word.
If only spring training actually….mattered.
Perhaps it shouldn’t, but it does matter when it comes to filling out rosters. Every year, players on the edge play themselves into or off of contested roster spots.
Yeah, that’s true, in that sense it does absolutely matter. I was speaking more to performance in spring training by specific individuals who then cannot perform in regular season. We’ve seen it a bunch with the baby bombers who got our hopes high a number of times…
Speaking of, I’ve been impressed with IKF, Higgy, & Gleyber. They are playing at a different level for sure. I also love that IKF is a lifelong Yankee fan & this is a dream come true for him. Another Vazquez-like story, but IKF is better. I hope Gleyber’s performance translates to the regular season too, although that’s a big ask.
Since they didn’t add a center fielder despite Cashman’s sorta-maybe statement about wanting to upgrade there, a lot would seem to hinge on how Hicks holds up over the long season. And then how Gallo bounces back in the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Nothing is certain in March for any team, but Cashman sure banked a lot on gambles again, and that’s just to mention two of them.
Both Hicks and Gallo batted under .200 for the Yanks in 2021. Can they repeat in 2022?
Reparations for the Whitlock heist.
This guy will never play in the majors. No
Loss for Boston.
He’s 22. It’s a bit early to define his career.
Shh…. Butch is an expert on minor leaguers apparently….
Drag Bunt, did you just use the Shusher?! Only special people can use the Shusher…
I want a Shusher too!
@Butch779988- you don’t really know that.
You never want someone bloom release’s
Now that teams use 40 billion players a year there seems to be an uptick in these transactions. I kind of like that, it gives more players a shot at the bigs, even if it’s small.
Not to mention frequent flyer points. Kyler Tyler has been with three teams this week.
Good pickup for yanks. Hes light hitting, got solid defense, good work ethic. Maybe he can find that next gear in NY.
