Although the Reds’ offseason has consisted primarily of cutting payroll, general manager Nick Krall suggested to reporters this afternoon that his focus will now shift to adding to the roster rather than subtracting (Twitter link via Mark Sheldon of MLB.com). Specifically regarding sought-after right-handers Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle, Krall stated: “I don’t see us moving any of those two players.”
Cincinnati’s offseason kicked off with Krall ominously stating that the organization needed to “align our payroll to our resources.” Those comments came in conjunction with the decision to waive Wade Miley and his $10MM salary following a strong season and to trade former Gold Glove-winning catcher Tucker Barnhart to the Tigers.
Following the lockout, the Reds traded veteran right-hander Sonny Gray to the Twins and attached third baseman Eugenio Suarez (still owed $35MM) to All-Star left fielder Jesse Winker in order to get the Mariners to take on the remaining salary. Cincinnati acquired prospects in both those post-lockout deals — pitchers Brandon Williamson and Chase Petty most notably — but the broader takeaway was that those trades trimmed nearly $50MM in payroll off the books.
There has indeed been something of a shift in philosophy today, as the Reds took on more than $7MM in salary when they flipped Amir Garrett to the Royals in exchange for veteran starter Mike Minor. They’ve also agreed to a $4.5MM deal with veteran infielder Donovan Solano. The moves certainly don’t make up for the losses of Miley, Gray and Winker, at least in terms of competitive expectations, but they do at least push back against the teardown narrative that had formed.
While some will wonder whether this is mere posturing, it’s rare for an executive to make public comments of this nature only to later walk them back. It’s possible that a team could simply overwhelm the Reds and force them to part with either Castillo or Mahle, both of whom are controlled via arbitration through the 2023 season, but it now seems likelier that they’ll open the year in the rotation alongside the newly acquired Minor.
If Castillo and Mahle are indeed off that market, that’s music to the ears of the Athletics, who surely won’t be making any such public declarations regarding lefty Sean Manaea and right-hander Frankie Montas. The A’s have already traded Matt Olson, Matt Chapman and Chris Bassitt as they look to trim payroll and stock back up on young talent, and it stands to reason that with heavy interest in both Manaea and Montas, further trades will follow suit. Subtracting Castillo and Mahle from the market only reduces the supply of available starters on the market and enhances Oakland’s bargaining power.

The Reds are a disaster, but at least signing Solano was a decent move; the guy can flat out hit.
Tiger22matt
He’s a 34 year old bench bat that they overpaid to get.
Pete'sView
When you see Solano play day in an day out, you will not say that. Still doesn’t make sense of what Cinci is doing, but don’t blame that on Donnie Barrels.
Tiger22matt
I’m sure he’s going to replace the 100 plus hrs and 200 plus rbis lost. No well he does nothing for the Reds then as a bench player.
Pete'sView
That’s not how it works. When did you start watching baseball? You blame one player for not being another. Good god, man.
Tiger22matt
He’s a waste of money he’s too old and he’s not even going to hit 10hr or 20rbis he is a waste of time they could use for a young guy they could develop.

Is there a reason for Reds fans to be positive? I think not, he’s not replacing any of the production lost by the 3 guys who are gone.

I never said the Reds should be positive about their team. I simply said Donovan Solano is a good player, and the Reds have fewer and fewer of them

The Reds have absolutely no idea what they are doing right now. They had a pretty solid team
on paper last year that was only getting better with the arrivals of India, Barrero and Stephenson, and with guys like Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft and other good prospects who are on the way as soon as this season. If they had re-signed Castellanos and signed a couple good relievers, they could have easily been a competitive team this season and perhaps for the next couple seasons. But they just threw in the towel instead to save some money, I guess. So they blow up the entire team, but then refuse to trade their two last big trade chips at their PEAK value, when they aren’t even going to compete at all next season now. Either GO for it or completely blow it up. You absolute morons.
The Reds are becoming as embarrassing and shameful as any other team in baseball.
Mario93
The Reds are real idiots. Fire that whole front office and bring a complete new one in. They sell off basically everyone else, to ensure they won’t be contenders, yet don’t trade the guys they can get the most for. The longer you keep them, the less you’ll get back.. Get a haul while you can, while they don’t get injured, or have a down year, or continue to add on to their service time… my god.
baseballguy_128
and sell the team
flamingbagofpoop
This doesn’t seem like the type of moves that are orchestrated by a gm of his own volition, the past couple of seasons have definitely looked like orders being handed down.

I don’t generally expect to have diarrhea after eating hot wings…

The Reds offseason has been a schizophrenic one. The trade away Gray, Suarez, Barnhart, and Winker, let Miley go in a straight waiver claim and turn around and trade for Minor, sign Solano, and are supposedly looking for Catching/Outfield/Pitching help. All things they keep getting rid of…
CNichols
Neither one of these guys is under contract long enough to be there when the Reds could be good again. They should either extend them (which they likely won’t) or at some point trade them.
I guess they can hold them to trade at the deadline or even next offseason, but if someone gets hurt then they’ll get nothing, so they might as well just keep tearing it down now.
candymaldonado
Between this and the Greinke news, Angels are galloping toward another season of irrelevance. Had so much money come off the books heading into a deep FA class, and their only big play was a 1 year deal to a TJ guy when they have huge rotation holes and a need at SS.
cookmeister 2
full year (hopefully) of Trout and Rendon is a pretty solid pickup
candymaldonado
Scoring 6 runs a game and hoping you don’t give up 7 hasn’t worked well for most teams with their rotation issues.
5toolMVP
Do you believe Ohtani and Thor are a solid 1-2?
Do you believe some combo of Lorenzen, Suarez, Sandoval, Detmers, Canning, and Bachman can form a suitable 3-4-5-6?
It’s not the hottest rotation but should suffice. The Angels need health on their side
At some point the kids need to rise to their potential.
cookmeister 2
Sandoval and Suarez had pretty under the radar years last year. We need some more length out of those guys but I don’t think the rotation is that bad tbh
BaseballRebel
Yep at some point the talent must come from within, you can’t solve every need via FA
radhippo
No, I don’t believe any of that other than they need health. Ohtani n Thor are good but neither are getting 200ip. Their starters are a group of prayers. Of course everyone hopes they’re good and healthy, but a couple guys are going down. Perry says there’s not payroll restrictions, so he’s admitting he’s been losing out to other GMs or he is incompetent.
flamingbagofpoop
Do you believe Ohtani and Thor are a solid 1-2?
No

Depending on what you mean by suitable, probably – No
dirkg
Yeah I think every Halo fan read this article with a looping fart sound in the background.
Trout turns 31 this season (and is not getting any younger), Ohtani still has relatively inexpensive contract, and Oakland is in its rebuilding phase. Now is/was the time to strike.
BUT once again, Angel fans are left feeling like the girl at prom whom got all dressed up but nobody to dance with.

Correction: they don’t plan on trading either guy right now but will likely trade both in July. Especially if a team is willing to take on the contract of Moustakas
baseballguy_128
So the reds will trade them by next week….. ITS TIME TO SELL THE TEAM BOB!
Robertowannabe
Doesn’t matter who owns the team, until the base economics of the league changes ,the teams that reside in the lower half by revenue will be forced to operate the way the Reds are going now. Build to a short window of opportunity then after it runs dry, you sell of your best assets and start over. No matter who owns the team, they will not be able to pay their better players when the top half with larger local revenue streams will always be able to out bid the Reds for the talent. No owner will spend multimillions in the red and still be the owner. You take the ownership group of the Dodgers and put them in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, etc and they will run the franchise the same way the current owners do. No owner will spend 10’s of millions of their own money to pay their players and run the team at a significant operating loss.
Linkster
First of all, no owner loses money. Secondly, the Wilpon’s ran the Mets into the ground and still Cohen came along and paid $2.4B for the team and is spending like a man on a mission.
Robertowannabe
Cohen is spending money because he has the local revenue streams to support it. If Cohen bought the Reds, guaranteed he would not be spending the same money because he would be spending more than the team could generate in income in Cincinnati. The Wilpon’s ran the Mets into the ground because they made some serious errors in their investments and it cost them the ownership of the team. Yes they were stupid and horrible owners.
baseballguy_128
I think Cohen would still be spending the money he would even if he bought the Reds…. the Reds would be better than what they are now to he did because at least he cares wether his team win or loses unlike the Castellini’s
baseballguy_128
Your not wrong, but the Castellini family can still sink more money into the organization.

This is classic Bob Castellini greed and stupidity.
1) He never allows the FO to commit to any particular strategy. When the Reds sell, he refuses to allow the Reds to sell his “favorites” nor does he allow the Reds to do a complete tear down. When he wants to “spend”, he never spends completely. They just pay an insignificant amount more each time, for the ability to say they spent more money.
2) This is a PR stunt as well. He wanted to make it appear like the Reds are still trying to compete, so that fans still come to the ballpark to watch Votto, Castillo, Mahle, etc. If the Reds just traded everyone, then attendance would sink even further, and he wouldn’t get his money.
If the Reds were going to tank, which they clearly are, then they should commit fully. Trade off everyone of value, accumulate as much prospect capital and payroll space as possible, and allow the currently ready prospects to show what they are. Build a base with younger, cheap talent, and supplement with FA in 2-3 years. Instead, they are going to pay a bunch of scrubs and reclamation projects, trade guys like Castillo and Mahle too late (like they have time and time again), and continue to operate in the absence of any tangible strategic plan.
Both the owner and the FO are incompetent at running a sports franchise.

Another stupid move by Krall. No way they’ll be overwhelmed by anyone knowing they can go to Oakland for pitching, and that’s where the better prospects will go…
