The Marlins have signed outfielder Roman Quinn to a minor league contract, according to Craig Mish of The Miami Herald (Twitter link). Quinn’s deal contains an invitation to the Marlins’ big league spring camp.
After spending all 10 of his professional seasons with the Phillies, Quinn will remain in the NL East and look for both a fresh start and some long overdue good health in Miami. Injuries have been the story of Quinn’s career, including the 2021 season — Quinn was limited to 28 games due to a finger laceration, and then a serious left Achilles injury that required season-ending surgery in June.
With such a checkered health history, it isn’t surprising that the switch-hitting Quinn hasn’t shown much (.228/.306/.355) over 512 plate appearances and 178 games with the Phils from 2016-21. Still, his MLB career does represent essentially just one season of playing time, and Quinn has been productive at the minor league level. A second-round pick for Philadelphia in the 2011 draft, Quinn received some top-100 prospect buzz during his time in the Phillies’ farm system.
The minors contract represents no risk for the Marlins in seeing what Quinn can offer in the wake of his Achilles surgery. His initial recovery time was projected as 9-12 months, so Quinn may not be quite back at close to 100 percent for spring camp, yet the Marlins could also continue to monitor his progress in extended Spring Training or at the Triple-A level. If all goes well, Quinn could factor in Miami’s outfield depth plans, as the 28-year-old has showed the ability to play all three positions on the grass.

I wish him the best. As a Phillies fan he goes under what could have been without the injuries

Typical of the post-Jeter Marlins. Shopping in the “scratch and dent” aisle.
Yeah, this is the kind of move that’ll win over the few MLB fans left in South Florida.

@crank7
Every team signs minor league depth. This is likely the only “post Jeter” move so far. If they were signing Castellaos, or trading for Reynolds, those would not have been “typical” either. The positive is its someone who can play CF, a position of need.

@ctyank7
I didn’t realize that the offseason is done.

A minor league deal for a minor league franchise… this will add some WAR to the Marlins though.

Still looking for me? In your life, does the sun rise and set on me? Does your world rotate around me?

Don’t you have a M@GA rally to get to?

Woo Hoo! Championship.

This ain’t terrible. Could potentially show second life. Not every signing needs to be other-worldly.

Nah, this one’s dead on arrival.
VonPurpleHayes
He’s very talented, but injury prone. He had a lot of bad luck, but the speed is incredible and he has shown he can get hot with the bat albeit briefly. If he stays healthy, he’s a nice piece.
rememberthecoop
Yes but just wonder if the Achilles will affect that speed?
DarkSide830
he’s done fine through past injuries
Dispostion
I don’t see why Jeter was mad.
They were gonna get Quinn why did they need Nick Castellanos? /s
some guy 2
He may sprain his wrist signing the contract.

Finally the Marlins have signed someone. Was not exactly what I had in mind but a good depth addition.
VonPurpleHayes
Important to remember Marlins made big moves before the lockout.

@VonPurpleHayes
You know that the trolls, Jeter worshippers and E!SPN crowd won’t notice that because it doesn’t fit into their efforts to post.

The Marlins made big moves from a small franchise’s perspective before the lockout.
There, fixed it.
pohle
not the move i had in mind for the marlins, but a good depth signing and potentially a great signing if they come up short on bigger fish and he has a healthy, semi-productive season
PhilliesFan87
…and he has been placed on the DL with a strained wrist caused by signing the contract.
DarkSide830
if Roman can stay healthy than this will be a money signing.
rememberthecoop
And if I had a billion dollars I’d be a billionaire.
Yankee Clipper
And you guys said the Marlins weren’t going to spend money…. Pfffft.
MarlinsFanBase
Yes, the offseason is over.

Tell us who the Marlins are going to sign next?!
Monkey’s Uncle
So I guess now we know who could be Roman the outfield in Miami.
Rsk3228
One of the most injury prone players I have ever seen. Game changing speed, but needs to get in the game to use it.

Samuel
If this guy could learn bat control to bunt and hit liners and grounders through the spaces in the infield – a la Matty Alou – he could be a star. His speed can be a game turner both on O and D – especially upsetting the opposing pitcher and infield defense once he gets to 1B.
But he won’t do that.
Doubt he’ll stay with the Marlins for long. If the Rays move Kevin Kiermaier I can see them taking Quinn on to be spotted as they do Brett Phillips.
FSF
I bet Jeter’s regretting that he didn’t stick around for this.
whosehighpitch
Good riddance.
DadsInDaniaBeach
RQ is fun to watch on the bases..He can play a excellent CF too…If only he would stay on the field.
I wish him all the luck in the world….

Yawn…about this move and about the posters with the usual E!SPN narrative nonsense.

My only thought about this is why didn’t we just bring back Magnueris Sierra who’s 3 years younger, just as fast, etc. with the only difference being that Quinn switch hits and Serra is solely a LH hitter.
Good luck to Sierra with the Angels.
UKPhil
Sierra was on the 40 man and Quinn is on a minor league deal. I’m still hoping for Reynolds. One of our second catchers along with Meyer plus one, could do the trick

This was a topic before the lockdown. I said it then and I say it now: I really like this move. Quinn is a better batter than Mags, faster and provides excellent defense too.
I did my homework and compared Mags and Quinn: stathead.com/baseball/player-comparison.cgi?player…
The interesting thing about Quinn are his splits vs. LH and RH. He is a switch hitter, but has mixed results. He has more power as a RHB but a higher OBP batting lefty.
Maybe can do the same as Mullins and bat only from the left side? Meaning, can he split duties with DLC?
Another very interesting thing are his splits over the batting order. Although he looks like a lead off man, performs way better in the 9th spot: 134 tOPS+, check all the splits here: baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=quinn…
Even though the team looks like settled down for ST and no more bats are coming to the lineup, I really like this one. He can provide defensive versatility in the OF at the very least.
