The team has been putting in extra hours trying to keep up with all the hot stove news this week, so we haven’t been able to run our regularly scheduled chats. So, I hosted one today! Click here to read the transcript. If you enjoy our chats and would like to increase your chances of getting a question answered tenfold, check out our subscription service for as little as $2.99. Anthony Franco holds subscriber-only chats every Friday afternoon and answers between 60-90% of the questions asked.

Do you see the Giant signing a big bat like Castellanos or Confoto or maybe even Story and use him at second or center field? Or maybe a guy like Pham?
Tim Dierkes
I don’t really see any of those happening.

Thank you guys for the hard work you put in to run this site and monitor the stove no matter how hot it is!

Will the brewers add another impact bat? Still seem light offensively
Tim Dierkes
I do not believe so.

Trade proposal:
Rays get: Foscue, Huff, Zavala, and Brett Martin Rangers get: Austin Meadows.
Who says no?

Yeah, I overshot this one, maybe drop Zavala from the trade? I’m just infatuated with Meadows right now and he’d slide perfectly into LF in Texas.
sascoach2003
I think they’re going to roll with Jake and see what he can do with regular at bats. He doesn’t need to be an All-Star, just steal 15-25 bags, hit 12-15 homers, play his usual outstanding defense, hit about .265, and cut down on the strikeouts by cutting down on his swing. Rangers get a plus WAR player that way. At worst, speed and defense. He just needs to be a role player, not do too much heavy lifting.
Tim Dierkes
Three 50 grade prospects for three years of Austin Meadows? I could see the Rays doing that.
Rangers29
Holy crap, who is grading Huff and Zavala as 50s??? Huff’s value is pretty low after his injury last year and it’s pretty up-in-the-air right now as to if he’ll be able to catch or not, something that has made his value riskier than it’ll ever be.
Zavala… well… I just don’t know how you could grade him a 50 right now. Great hit tool, but not spectacular defensively and was just taken in the 2nd round this past draft. I wasn’t aware of anybody ranking him that highly. I wouldn’t mind trading him for the right guy.

Personally, I’d give Huff and Zavala 45, but that’s just my opinion.

MLBTR has separated itself between every other publication that covers MLB.
The coverage and write-ups regarding the post-lockout personnel frenzy has been historic. Putting the transactions into perspective – explaining both the individual players issues and the state of the teams they went to – is all an MLB fan, agent(s) and their employees, MLB personnel, or anyone else interested in MLB can ask for. I’ve been reading coverage of MLB since the late 1950’s with ‘The Sporting News’, the “Bible of Baseball”. Have never seen this sort of in-depth coverage; and so (literally) up to the minute (The Sporting News published once a week).
Hope MLBTR continues to keep the politics out; not take sides on issues; and cover all teams equally no matter the size of their market.
What has been done the past week or so is just remarkable. Anyone doubting what I wrote needs to look at some other publications that follow the sport.
Thanks to all the people working there.
Tim Dierkes
That’s really nice, thanks.
Dotnet22
They take sides on issues.
coolhandneil
Occasionally, but it’s always the right side so it’s cool.

Couldn’t agree more. This site has been an everyday stop for me before Tim decided to make this his full-time gig. People probably don’t know what effort goes into each article they post including myself which makes these past couple of weeks very impressive. Good job guys and keep up the good work!

Here here on the 3rd NYC MLB team. I get there’s a lot of great nominees: Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Nashville, Vancouver/Montreal?, but Brooklyn, like Montreal, had one and if BK were it’s own city – and not a borough – it’d be the 2nd largest US city.
Gov. Hochul has talked about revitalizing unused train lines (that were previously only used not for primary transport years ago) and revitalizing them to form the first, and only, train line from the 2 largest NYC boroughs: Queen and Brooklyn, which would reduce commute substantially and eliminate the need to go through Manhattan using public transit. This would be the least expensive proposal, surprisingly, because of the existing infrastructure, and also the shortest timeline for subway expansion. If this happens, it’d make it even easier for interborough travel and make a Brooklyn-based team (not named the Cyclones) even more attractive.
advplee
Brooklyn has a population of 2.7 million. That is not even close to the second largest US city.

Who has the most trade value in baseball right now? Least?
And please don’t just say Mike Trout. He doesn’t even have the most trade value on his own team anymore.
atlbraves2010
Acuna and his contract has to be toward the top
Tim Dierkes
Maybe someone like Adley Rutschman has the most? FanGraphs is pretty good at this each year. It’s often a guy who is very good with a ton of control left. Rutschman is big league ready (injury notwithstanding) and essentially has seven years of control left unless he finishes top 2 in ROY. (Oddly the Orioles will now root for him not to).
Sometimes it’s guys on really team-friendly contracts, like Acuna.
Least trade value…Rendon or Strasburg maybe? Just huge commitments coming off rough years, although they’re looking fine in the spring.
bhambrave
Ozzie Albies. Remember that he was also a plus defensive SS in the minors.
Deleted Userr
Ooh I got one. If a team holds a guy down for the first 2 weeks of the season (whether intentionally like Bryant or because they get injured in Sprong Training like Guerrero) and then finishes top 2 in the ROY voting, does the team still get the extra draft picks or does the team get the full year of service time and the team is just SOL in terms of draft picks?
Tim Dierkes
No draft picks in that scenario. The whole draft pick incentive with this is to force teams to put guys on the Opening Day roster (technically it’s that he needs to receive 172 days of service in the season).

After seeing the Cubs listed as a potential landing spot for Luke Voit (yesterday’s “members only” article ) – & the mention by Mr Franco that the fit is “cleaner” in the event Contreras is moved:
Voit, Rortvedt, Vargas (maybe a proverbial lottery ticket too) to Chicago for Wilson Contreras.
Works out as a bit of an overpay by the Yanks on BBTV. Helps the Cubs this season & adds a decent middle infield prospect (& perhaps a lower level prospect too).
coolhandneil
Too light on NY’s side. They’d have to up the offer for Contreras.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I was trying to avoid the basic homer trade template of –
We trade: crappy players
We get: good players
May have fallen short. However, I still think Voit & Rortvedt could be plausible secondary pieces.
Tim Dierkes
I think Voit is a guy the Cubs might not mind having, but if they’re gonna trade Contreras, it’d be primarily to get a good controllable player and not a guy like him.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Fair enough. Although Voit is controllable through ’25 & I was trying to make him a secondary piece.
Gleyber + Voit + Rortvedt works out too. Not sure how Chicago views Torres though.
tstats
I’d assume they at least used to like him enough! Or maybe not cause it was just Chapman pretty much for Torres iirc
harlee71
In your opinion when will we see Correa on the field and Where?
Deleted Userr
Why did Kris Bryant get a NTC?
1. He clearly signed because of $$$ and he gets paid regardless.
2. The Rockies are arguably the worst tram to play for. They’d be doing him a favor by trading him.
3. I’m assuming the Rockies offered the NTC in lieu of more years/AAV. Like, they didn’t agree to terms with Bryant on a contract with the exact same years and dollar figures and then say “Oh! But you also have to have a no-trade clause or no deal!” So Bryant could have gotten more money (although it’s not clear how much more) if he didn’t get a NTC.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Do you think there’s any chance the cubs keep adding? Trade for Manaea or Montas? Maybe reunite with Soler or Castellanos?
