It’s been apparent since the Braves acquired and extended first baseman Matt Olson that Freddie Freeman is likely headed elsewhere in free agency, but Freeman made that all but official this afternoon when he thanked Braves fans and bid them and the organization farewell on Instagram this afternoon.
“…Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” wrote Freeman. “It has been a blast to have you cheer for me and I hope I was able to bring smiles to a lot of your homes over the years. I gave everything I had day in and day out and I hope you guys saw that as well. Although our time has come to an end, I look forward to seeing and playing in front of you all again. When that time comes, I hope you remember all the wonderful memories we made together. I love you Braves Country! Champions Forever!”
It’s not clear whether Freeman’s message is a portent for an agreement with a new team or simply an acknowledgement that the first chapter of his storied career has drawn to a close. Several possible landing spots for the 2020 NL MVP have dried up in the past few days, as the Braves not only essentially replaced him with Olson, but the Yankees struck up a deal to bring Anthony Rizzo back to the Bronx.
Reports recently have suggested that Freeman remains of interest to the Dodgers, Red Sox, Rays and Padres, although each destination comes with its own reasons for some degree of skepticism. Freeman has reportedly sought a six-year deal that would carry him through his age-37 season, and the Dodgers tend to prefer higher annual salaries and shorter terms than that six-year target. To that end, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote this week that L.A. is “believed” to have offered a four-year deal to Freeman that includes a sizable annual value.
Looking to Freeman’s other reported suitors, the Padres have spent more than a year trying to move Eric Hosmer, who still has four years and $59MM remaining on his contract. As explored more in depth here at MLBTR yesterday, it’s difficult to see that deal coming together without several other pieces falling into place first.
The Red Sox have been comfortable exceeding the luxury tax in the past, but they opted not to do so and have at pair of interesting young first base/designated hitter types already in Bobby Dalbec and prospect Tristan Casas. It’s doubtful that either would stand in the way of Boston signing a player of Freeman’s caliber, but the luxury tax concerns present a more feasible roadblock. Still, SNY’s Andy Martino tweeted this morning that the Yankees believe their archrivals’ interest in Freeman is sincere.
As for the Rays, their interest is said to be real but also comes with the most obvious hurdles of the bunch. Tampa Bay’s payroll is perennially among the lowest in the sport, and while the long-term books are exceptionally clean (as noted when first examining their reported offer), a free agent of Freeman’s caliber heading to Tampa is entirely without precedent. It was a surprise several years ago to see the Rays reel in Charlie Morton on a $30MM guarantee that spanned two seasons; Freeman could command an annual salary in that range over a longer term. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweeted this morning that Tampa Bay has remained “aggressive” in its surprising pursuit of Freeman, but an actual deal between the two parties would still register as one of the largest free-agent surprises ever.
The lack of obvious suitors for a massive five- or six-year commitment and the recent decisions by the Braves and Yankees to move on has created a sense among some executives in the game that Freeman’s camp overplayed its hand, Jim Bowden of The Athletic tweets. That’ll be determined by Freeman’s ultimate contract, of course, but his path to the massive contract that once appeared to be a given looks a bit less clear now than it did when the Yankees and Braves were still in the market for his services.
TradeAcuna
Freeman said his farewell. Does that mean there is not even a tiny tiny tiny bit of chance he rejoins the Braves?
Cmon there is still a better chance he rejoins the Braves than the Mets winning the division this year.

All this happened because Freeman’s wife convinced him to wait it out because she wants to start a clothing/jewelry line in Los Angeles. Freddie said he would decide within “24 hours” and the Braves gave him 6 days. Camp had started and they needed a first baseman so they went after Olson. If Freddie hadn’t listened to his wife he would be a Brave right now on a $140 million contract. That’s where he wanted to be. Things aren’t going well in the Freeman household right now. They are probably going to get a divorce over this.

That theory is getting old. Of course his wife has some insight into the decision…I would hope anyone making a huge career change like that would consult and consider their spouses thoughts on where you will raise your family and send your kids to school. But her ONLINE business has been a thing for years and the Freeman’s already own and live in a home in SoCal for 4-5 months out of the year. Would she like a store in Beverly Hills? Of course. But if she wanted to, she would have and could have done it already. Also, her posting a picture of her and the other wives at dodger stadium means nothing. She posted one from trust at the same time and if you look at her stories she posts these and other pics from stadiums all over MLB almost daily.
Steve Nebraska
She wants to run and manage her business every day in a luxurious and expensive retail space in Beverly Hills just like all of her LA friends with exorbitantly wealthy husbands do. It’s important to her. I can’t blame her. It sounds fun and she would probably do very well there. She’s tired of working from home and being “Freddie Freeman’s wife” when she wants to be seen as Chelsea Freeman. I totally understand why she feels that way. That was made clear to Freddie and he cares about her very much which is why he had such a tough time making the decision. He told the Braves “24 hours” and she kept telling him to hold off for more money/years because she would have rather gone to LA.

Not a chance. They have Olson who is 5 years younger and will put up better numbers on the back end of his contract than Freeman age 35-38 years. He had a 5 year 150 offer and got greedy. Carlos Correa had 10 years 275 million offer and got greedy. Both will not get better offers now. Carlos’s ego & Boras’s late to the game representation, has his only option Houston. Houston might go 5 years 150 but he left 125 million on the table he now has to get lucky to make 60 million on the next contract so ultimately he loses 60 to 70 million.
ThonolansGhost
Freeman got a 5 year offer for 140 million dollar offer from the Braves and turned it down. Then he got a 6 year offer for 162 million from the Dodgers and accepted it. Freeman knew what he was doing.
But you might be right about Correa.

I mean the man has to have enough information at this time to make a decision right? Every day that goes by just eliminates one more team from which to negotiate with. I’m also not buying SD and Boston. Seems too well timed when he was negotiating with LA and NY! Boston isn’t going to block Casas and SD can’t trade Hosmer. Make a choice Freddie. You know you don’t want to go to Tampa. Stop it already!!!
mrshyguy99
It could be a money thing . Dodgers like shorter deals and freeman wants 6 years .
bluesteele
Agreed, but seems short sighted to me. Take the four years and the cash with an opt out for your own benefit and become a FA again with more money available. He’ll for sure net more with the LA deal. (Not including taxes of course)
BlueSkies_LA
Which is why Mookie only got 12 years from the Dodgers. Any other team would have given him a longer contract.

Would love for Casas to be everything he’s mentioned to be but so was a certain outfielder last year who was then so overmatched that it was sad to watch. If Boston were to make a bold move and everything hit, the team would find a way to make it work.

Professional athletes are liable for taxes depending on where they play, so all 16 cities or so they play in for a given year (don’t worry, they all have accountants). So yes, where your team is based matters, but not nearly as much as you might think. It’s not really a factor.
bluesteele
It’s still Tampa. Too many flaws from a team, ownership and consistency standpoint if I truly wanted to end my career somewhere.
Bob Horner's revenge
If a player is looking for money in any of their first 5 or so requirements, the taxes will absolutely be a factor. At the minimum 50% of their salary is taxed by their home team. The Dodgers also play another 18-24 games per year visiting San Diego and San Francisco. 100 games at 13+ % tax on $30 million is nearly $2 million dollars in taxes. No way that doesn’t matter to anyone with common sense.
bluesteele
Taxes are real, but what about endorsements? You think he can’t make that up in LA vs freakin’ Tampa Bay. You go to Tampa and you leave your marketing value behind.
MLB-1971
California is not 12.3! It is 13.3 percent state income tax….71 cents per gal state gas tax….highest in the nation x 2.
It is all irrelevant if you are making $300 million….that is still in the top 100th of 1 percent earner.
It boils down to where he wants to live.
Seamaholic is wrong! If player x works in CA he pays CA tax. He does not file taxes in 16 different states. Lmao
justdadamaja
Seamaholic is actually correct.
And that actually goes all year long. Not just during the season. If the player establishes residence in a state that has no/small income tax, and there are payments before/after the season, they are taxed based on their primary residence. Its the reason why someone from Middle America ( Brandon Nimmo ) has a Florida residence.
He’ll get taxed NY rates for every time he is paid to play in NY ( whether he plays or not )
He’ll get taxed FL rates for every time he is paid to play in FL ( whether he plays or not )
If there are bonuses or other payments, its based on his primary residence.
ukpadre
I don’t think that is correct. He’ll get taxed based on his place of residence and where his main place of business is. If you got taxed every time you worked in a different location, then every time you took a business trip you’d have to file taxes with that state. He doesn’t get paid to play in NY by the Rays, he gets paid in Florida to carry out his work in NY.

“Some executives in the game” equals maybe two executives who wanted to get him cheap and are frustrated he won’t sign (i.e. Dodgers). He’ll get his money. Someone will realize he’s still out there and make a one-time exception to their payroll because he’s Freddie freakin’ Freeman. Angels. Rangers. Rockies. Brewers. Don’t worry about him getting his.
NoRegretzkys
Certainly seems like a lot of his suitors have moved on. Less competition in the market will bring his price down a bit. Doesn’t take an executive in the game to figure that out. He will still get paid, but I’ll be surprised if he gets the 6/180 that was rumoured pre-lockout.

The Red Sox have a TON of money coming off the books next year. The luxury tax hit for this year alone is a non issue.
Bob_Laublaw
The Red Sox are starting to make more sense. Bogaerts has an opt out. J.D. is gone soon and do they want to extend Devers as a DH, will Devers accept dh money? The core is shaky and Freeman is a perennial MVP candidate.
Appalachian_Outlaw
The Red Sox make a ton of sense to me. I know there are those saying don’t block the prospects, but couldn’t they sign Freeman and flip one of them for a good SP? Oakland has pitching available.
I also don’t see where the luxury tax matters. Boston would only be paying it for a year.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I don’t think he’s going to Boston. Bloom is just upping the price for other teams. Bloom has not signed one big free agent in his career here in Boston.
We also have Triatan Casas at the waiting, so if we sign Freeman, someone’s getting traded.
deweybelongsinthehall
pwn, Bloom to date has done his job well. He signed on knowing his first order was to fix the farm and payroll during a pandemic. He did that and the time got to the AL championship series. Let’s now see what he does the next two seasons. As for Casas, it’s a nice problem to have. Duran last year was clearly not ready and the art of being a successful GM is balancing today with tomorrow.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
@deweybelongsinthehall I never said he didn’t do his job well. I simply said he hasn’t spent big. Signing Freeman is unlike Bloom’s style. Not saying that’s a bad thing, just pointing out that I don’t think we are getting Freeman.

Anyone who would give freeman a 6 year deal is crazy … I’m not happy Yankees re-signed rizzo as he’s done… stick a fork in him… the winners… the Braves … why? They got Olson who is a lot younger, signed him to a long term deal at less than freeman wanted… and somehow I missed the hype… the players Atlanta gave up are highly ranked but their stats are nothing special
RunDMC
I doubt AA would have given up that many prospects if he didn’t think he had a shot at getting an extension. Considering Olson’s agent (BB Abbott) is Chipper/McCann’s former agent and Olson is from ATL – from the same high school as Francoeur (Parkview), not including the fact that Olson just closed on a house a few months ago (before a trade was ever mentioned) as an offseason home — they had a pretty good shot he’d be interested in a good offer.
bravesnation nc
Freddie should have taken the 5/27AAV the Braves we’re offering. His reps where trying to get other teams involved “Big Markets” to force the Braves hand at 6 yrs it blew up on them. A higher annual salary of 4/ 128 32AAV if that’s what it ends up being is a Steep price to pay for what he had in ATL. No saying because I’m a “homer” but he was the clear Leader of the clubhouse and face of the organization. On say the Dodgers he is another star piece. Most players don’t even have the opportunity to be in the position he was.
mike156
He’s going to be signed, and he’s going to get paid. Probably not as much or as long as his ask was, but it’s going to be very substantial. He’s the type of player you want on your team. The only remaining question is which of the remaining possible suitors have enough interest to attract.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I’d wager Freeman will get his ask and Correa will get more than Seager.
deweybelongsinthehall
Not so sure on either count. Seager grabbed the money when no one knew early and I don’t see another 10 year deal. Freeman without the Braves bidding is now reminding me of JDM years ago. He still has a couple of markets more than JD really did but if he waits much longer, who knows? I’m thinking three or four years at a higher AAV or perhaps the five to save face with opt outs.
tampa86
Rays have reportedly offered 6/140. Sounds about in line with what similar caliber 1B have gotten AAV wise. I imagine if we sign him then a couple of trades are in order; some combination of Meadows, Choi, Diaz, etc. is likely gone, but an IF of Franco, Lowe, Freeman, and Walls/Diaz is likely the best in the league. Rays going to roll to another 100+ win season even without Freeman.
deweybelongsinthehall
Seeing is believing on the Rays’ signing anyone to that kind of deal.
Shuda22
Just sign already
olereb
Yes, he is going to sign, but he will not be signing where he wants to go, that’s what greed will do for you.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Greed? Dude, c’mon, seriously? This will surely be his last shot at a big free agent deal, and he deserves to get every penny he can. He’s been nothing but a consummate professional.
olereb
Yes greed, Atlanta was home to him, you can’t tell me he wanted to go somewhere else. The Braves offered him a fair deal, he thought he could get more, didn’t matter that the Braves would be limited to what else they could do by paying him. It did not matter AA is handcuffed with payroll restraints by our owners. He played the game and lost, only thing I hate is it cost us 4 minor leaguers and it also remains to be seen what they become. I like Freddie and will always be a fan, but Chipper was not about how much money he could get. Chipper wanted to be a Brave for life and retired a Brave
Appalachian_Outlaw
This is not at all a knock on Chipper, so please don’t take it as such.
I put Chipper’s salary of 15m in an inflation calculator and adjusted it for today, and the value I was given was a shade under 19.9m yearly. Now, Chipper was fantastic, but he didn’t post as many games yearly as Freddie either. There’s also more money in the game now.
So did Freddie maybe try to squeeze a little more? Yeah, sure. Fresh off a World Series, why not? I don’t think it makes him greedy. It’s apples to oranges, but I know I don’t start a negotiation with a low ask.
I still maintain the Braves should have just paid him. This should have been done last off-season, but it’s water under the bridge now. I just don’t understand how wanting to be compensated for your talents equates to greed.
deweybelongsinthehall
Who knows what Freeman really wants? Betts said the right things before he was dealt to up his price. For all we know he has wanted to go home the whole time, meaning Southern CA.
Cosmo2
Odd definition of greed. The ability to receive more and taking it doesn’t equate to greed.
olereb
Comparing Freddy to Chipper, Chipper was happy where he was at and I believe Freddy was also. My question to you is how much money does a person need. It’s ok to try and get what you feel your worth, but the Braves offered him 140 million for 5 years, he wanted more. If my memory serves me correct at the end of his career Chipper played on a year to year contract, and if you want to hear my opinion Chipper could have played another year or so, maybe not to his standards but adequately. I like Freddy, but my opinion of him has changed drastically. I remember him standing on the podium with his hands resembling a prayer and I thought the Braves were trying to lowball him. He was offered good money, he would be adequately compensated. He wanted more, more money and more years on that contract. It didn’t matter if in the final year of his contract that we would be paying him 30 million to dh. How much money does he need to live. When Freddy comes back to Atlanta I hope I’m there because I will be the one booing, and please don’t compare Freddy to Chipper, Chipper was a winner and the ultimate team player. Freddy is all about the money.
Cosmo2
I don’t think anybody needs even half that money but it is what it is. The rich are never satisfied. Give me 1/25th of Harper’s annual salary and I’m easily set and content for life. But it’s just not how rich folks think.
NashvilleJeff
@ olereb Imo, booing FF when he returns to play vs Atlanta would be a childish and classless reaction. He and his agents seem to have misjudged the market and AA’s resolve to hold the line against FF’s contract ask for a 6th year, but imo that doesn’t make Freddie worthy of your negative opinion of him. Why take contact negotiations between the billionaire owners and their multi millionaire players so personally? Freddie was one helluva team player for the Braves. He posted up every day no matter how he felt. Even played 3B to accommodate the Braves acquisition of Matt Adams. Wanting more than an organization wants to pay is a standard in all sports. Happens to most of us in our jobs as well. Congratulations to anyone who doesn’t want more money from their employer. Would you be angry at a co-worker who changed jobs to earn a better salary? Hope I’m not near you at a game when you start booing FF. I hate seeing someone like you embarrass yourself. It’s cringeworthy to watch an adult act like a fool.

Sooo tired too of everyone saying Roberts is some great manager too. I won’t even mention Snitkers job performance. It’s easy to say Roberts inherited an all-star team etc. That’s very much true but be also has to manage the egos of that superstar team. You know everyone wants ALL the playing time. Then you have to push the right buttons at the right time.
Not saying he’s the genius people make him out to be but he’s also not bad.
deweybelongsinthehall
In today’s world, most managers have the lineup set for them. They’re main non game jobs are communicating and babysitting.
differentbears
Dave Roberts inherited Don Mattingly’s team, one that never really seemed like it could get over the hump (and also appeared to have team culture issues). All Roberts did was win three pennants and a World Series in his first five years, and deserved to have won two.
Roberts might not be the best in-game manager, but Mattingly’s postseason style was to ride Kershaw until he’s done, then bring in someone who will allow every inherited runner to score. Roberts is better than Mattingly in both strategy and clubhouse management.
BlueSkies_LA
Roberts’ in-game management is exactly what the FO wants it to be.
Appalachian_Outlaw
@BlueSkies- I 100% believe that. If it wasn’t, he’d have been fired after the playoffs for the handling of that staff. The fact he wasn’t leads me to agree with you.
BlueSkies_LA
To hear some say it, he’d was supposed to be fired any one of ten different times. Instead he gets contract extensions, and still we hear about how he isn’t managing according to the FO’s game plan. Any day now Roberts will get yet another contract extension and we’ll hear more of the same nonsense about how bad he is at his job.
dimelotitony
Angels will be my best bet now to land Freeman they have to try and give Mike Trout a chance and a lineup with Mike Trout, Freddie Freeman, Justin Upton, Anthony Rendon and Shohei Ohtani could give them a shot in the AL West especially with Oakland selling off and Seattle was great last year but can they repeat that performance? Detroit looks like its going in the right direction. Texas went all out so interesting to see how they do. If Angels can pick up two serviceable pitchers as well to help out it makes all the sense in the world.
xalz
Seattle can definitely repeat last year’s success and build upon it. The Mariners have a great farm system and quite a pipeline of talent that has percolated.
SupremeZeus
In this instance, “Last & Final Offer” was not a bluff by the Braves. Flags fly forever and organizations that achieve sustained success don’t do nostalgia.
jjdunckley
Freddie has every right to pick and choose as he wishes but honestly, I believe he bluffed himself out of Atlanta. If he was seriously entertaining other offers, he would have signed right after they let him know they traded for Olson. It feels like Freddie was trying to leverage other teams interest into a guaranteed 6th or 7th year and AA decided he couldn’t waste anymore time waiting or he ends up with Rizzo instead of Olson. I feel bad for everyone involved because I really don’t believe this is what Freddie wanted

JJ DUNCKLEY said it better than my post. Whole situation blew up in his agents face. Market didn’t shake out like they wanted. I know he was shocked when they gave Olson that extension.
Appalachian_Outlaw
That depends specifically on the deal he was seeking. If he wants 200m, and he ends up at 180m, I wouldn’t say it blew up in his agent’s face. It only is a failure if his deal comes in less than the Braves offered, and I don’t believe it will.
jjdunckley
I think AA was pry offering option years, maybe a 6th and 7th and Freddie wanted him to be afraid of the Dodgers and their money. AA stood his ground and Freddie did too. Knowing Olson could go fast and not wanting Freddie to gain the leverage “now it me or Rizzo of trade for Wil Myers” AA pulled the trigger using Shea L as the centerpiece. At that point they still coulda done Olson At DH and Freddie at 1st but Freddie still held firm and so his money was extended to Olson with extra years
padam
Phillies should pounce on this, Dodgers are the most logical choice, and the Red Sox could be the dark horse that comes into play. I’d suspect Freeman would choose the Dodgers, but he needs to act soon in case the Sox switch gears and dump their cash on Correa and Phillies on Bryant.

I kind of think don’t sleep on the Giants. Farhan has filled out the rotation and still has money to spend. Offensively they still need to address the loss of Posey from the lineup and Belt could slot in as the DH, which could maybe keep him healthy.
bravesnation nc
Don’t blame AA and the organization on this one. Snit was pissed and hurt, everyone in that locker room was devastated. This is on his agents and him. I remember a interview Chipper gave a long time ago when he was asked about being on another team. He flat out said he knew he was leaving money on the table by staying in Atl. He was the face of the franchise and admits he made a lot of money in doing so. Freeman will most likely get less yrs for around the same amount minus a few mil. I was at the division and World Series in ATL last year and I’m telling you, No amount of money can replace the support and admiration that city had for #5. He will not get that anywhere else.
BraveLil'Toaster
I too was at the NLDS. Too broke for WS lol.
You’re correct though. He’s just an aging commodity to everyone else. Potentially a few helpful years to help someone win a championship & then expected to fall off a cliff by many.
I know he’s going to be 40 & raking like the BA version of Nelson Cruz as long as he feels like playing that long. That swing won’t break and he could have easily slid over to DH in year 6 if it was that big of a deal.
I honestly think he wouldn’t mind a shorter/higher AAV deal when pushed. Makes his money in time to retire promptly & spend time w/ his family.
Braveslifer
…and playing 155-160 games per season is brutal on a 6’ 5” body.
olereb
I agree with you 100 percent. Chipper was not about the money, he was happy where he was at and made a good living at it. Chipper will always be a Brave, Freddy will not
48-team MLB
Chipper and Freddie have one ring each. Olson has a realistic shot to get two with this core.
BraveLil'Toaster
Trust me i’m pretty bitter about him not staying.
But I think he might always be a Brave & Dansby had a good point about #5.
Dale Murphy, Andruw Jones, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, & Tom Glavine, Rafael Furcal, Javy Lopez, Brian McCann, Evan Gattis, Jason Heyward, Andrelton Simmons, & Jeff Francoeur all left & I still love em.
Hell even Byrdie’s weird self lol.
Many more i’m missing too i’m sure. The point remains. It’s a business and not always a romance novel. Chipper was special for a reason.
And he saved Freddie on the 4 wheeler that one time… Lol
48-team MLB
I’M GOING TO THROW A FORKBALL HERE. Freeman signs with one of Cincinnati/Oakland by the end of the day.
BraveLil'Toaster
I pondered the Oakland thing out of pure irony w/ them being a Cali team.
It just makes zero sense for them being the money ball team & just trading away a cheaper version of Freddie.
They’re gutting that team with no real chance of winning in the next couple years so Freddie doesn’t really do much but cost them a lot while losing.
48-team MLB
LOL it was a joke…but they actually would have to trade away half of their roster in order to afford him.
BraveLil'Toaster
For sure. But just imagine a world where Freddie turns down ATL & his only suitor was OAK. That’s the stuff of nightmares.
He HAS to do better than that lol.
thickiedon
Could it be Astros? Let Correa go and trade Yuli and his team friendly contract.
Paclypse71
The Braves have practically completed their offseason moves and Freddie still hasn’t made a decision…
JimmyForum
He would make so much sense in Milwaukee.
OldSaltUSNR
Interesting banter going on in there.
1) All clubs want Freeman. NO club has been identified that really wants him, that has identified him as a key piece of their winning club. As the author said, every remaining suitor has issues, pro and con. Finding a club that truly wants him for SIX years enough to pay him, is Freddie’s main problem. He doesn’t push any club over the top, to offset a 6 year contract risk.
2) The Dodgers are simply acquiring talent. They have so much talent on that team, that adding Freeman won’t make a break their next playoff run. On the other hand, in a weakening market for Freddie’s services, it’s a great opportunity for a $flush$ club like the Dodgers to snipe Freeman on a contract good-to-them.
3) Folks here stating that the Padres have no chance in this lottery are embarrassingly ignorant, ignoring recent club history, the Padres GM’s way of doing business, and the new controlling owner’s willingness to spend. Hosmer is NOT the major issue. His salary is a sunk, underwater investment. Whether or not the club chooses to part with future talent to rid themselves of Hosmer’s contract, or simply pay the luxury tax, MAKES NOT ONE BIT OF DIFFERENCE in their pursuit of Freeman. It’s simply “fit” versus “need”. If the Padres determine that Freeman fills a certain role better than other options, they’ll pay him, and sign him, period. However, Preller DOES have options. Pumping up the price that the Dodgers pay is a FAR secondary priority. Ensuring that NO competing club (there are 29 of those, by the way) snipes Freeman on the cheap, when he could have affordably pushed the Padres into the playoffs, is.
4) The Pads need a bat, and they need to backfill Tatis’ offense for 3 months. I seriously “believe” (yeah, folks, that’s my judgment call, could be wrong) that losing Tatis, and other clubs dropping out of the sweepstakes makes Freeman to SD more likely, not less. SD like the Dodgers generally have avoided long term contracts, not religiously, but generally. I think Preller would rather pay a higher AAV than pay for six years, and he’s going to be loath to sign Freeman to a six year deal with Hosmer’s history in the background (plus, the Pads immediate financial crunch argues for a backend loaded deal anyways). If Freddie were 27 or 29 years old? No problem. However, signing a guy who’s statistically past his prime to a six year deal. I think that’s not just a problem for the Dodgers and Pads, but EVERY club.
As a Padres fan with an admitted bias, I’m not too hot on Freeman either way. In 2022, yeah, he adds some serious potential pop. Long term, he’s likely a 3 year benefit, and 3 year liability. If the deal is losing Hassell, Abrams, or Campu to push Hosmer off the roster, AND pay Freddie for the next six long years, I’m sorry, but that’s a hard pass.
I highly doubt Preller would do it, either. Neither Hosmer or Freddie’s long term $$ are the issue. It’s really about Freddie’s potential contributions over the entire life of the contract he seeks. If the running is for a four year deal, I think the Padres are in the thick of the running on Freeman, IF the AAV is maybe $30M.
Yanks2
Another greedy past-his-prime player. Let the Angels sign him to a 10 year deal like they seem to with aging veterans that wind up contributing nothing to the team. Like Rendon, Wilson, Pujols, Upton for example
ammiel
All offseason i’ve believed the Giants will make a splash to replace the bat of Posey, despite the reports they do not want to spend in 9 digit sums on one player, this could be an exception. Sign Freddy please…Farhan.
Murphy NFLD
It’s either he goes to the Dodgers for something like 100-120 over 4 or he takes a big 1 year deal with a contender and go again next year maybe a 4 yr deal with an opt out after 1 yr
RaysFanTL
PLEASE SIGN WITH THE RAYS! Doubt it will ever happen, but if we trade KK and offload his salary I think Freddie might be a possibility?

richaw44
Braves’ fan here. I’ll miss Freddie. He was a great player, teammate and human. But the whole money thing is crazy to me in relation to players who have already made more than fans could imagine. Players shouldn’t play for peanuts, but how much more money do they need? Will 10-30 million as part of a guaranteed 150 million dollar contract really matter? Will that extra really make you happy; more happy than playing where you are loved, honored and wanted? Freddie had plenty of $$ on the table, if he wanted to stay. He wasn’t being disrespected. Just the organization could not see going higher for longer. I’m not saying he was greedy, but maybe I’m questioning his values – extra $$ vs. happiness. Chipper took less than he could have gotten elsewhere to be a lifelong Brave. I thought Freddie was in the same mold. Surprised. I truly hope he is happy wherever he ends up.
Appalachian_Outlaw
This is my take: it’s not how much Freddie needs, can spend, or whatever. I don’t know that it is for many athletes. I think it’s about realizing you have a skill that can not only take care of your children for life, but your children’s children.
OldSaltUSNR
That, plus it’s not just about the player. There’s a entire “business” surrounding him, and people he has worked with for years are depending on him for their slice of the pie. Of course, there are expectations among his peers to consider, too. There are tremendous pressure on a high level ballplayer to get the most lucrative deal he can.
I kind of lean to the view that he didn’t reject Atlanta as much as he wanted to come home, which is a pretty natural thing. Again, it’s not just “him” wanting to return to home and his extended family, but getting his wife and children there, too.
It’s tough to feel sorry for a multi-millionaire ballplayer, but he’s just a “guy”, too, with both the normal pressures of life and those that the game put on him.
citizen
True. I think Freddie asked for about 30-35 mil/ average annual value. liberty set the payroll at x dollars. GM said sign Freddie and go with what the braves have or not sign Freddie and spread the free agency dollars on other players? Look at the braves signings after the Olson trade.
Braveslifer
It appears the “re-sign Freddie at $30M” is the money offer, but the 5 years was the sticking point.
BlueSkies_LA
I don’t know why we hear this kind of comment so often, when it represents how exactly nobody behaves. I’m sure you don’t go into job recruitments telling your prospective employer, “please don’t pay me that much. I can live and feel loved, honored and wanted for less.”
TheUnknown285
I’m starting to wonder if this is going to be a “sign a big, one-year contract and try again next season” thing.
OldSaltUSNR
For a guy in his late 20’s, that might be the right thing to do. For a ballplayer over 30, he’s got to cut the best deal he can now, because at age 35+, the # of years and $$$ are going to drop like a stone. Plus, he could injure himself this year, and his career could be over.
I highly doubt that he’d take a 1 year deal, unless it was insane $$$. Maybe a 2-year, high AAV, with a 1 year mutual option/buy out.
DiehardFriarsFan
Get errrrrrr done! Hosmer can be moved to DH allowing Freeman to man 1B. Or vice versa.
Cosmo2
Hosmer makes an awful DH. Why force him into the lineup. Just sign Freeman and who cares about Hosmer the light-hitting DH?
bravesnation nc
That crap penned was weak. If you want to be on the West Coast cool, got it. But sitting there and waiting it out like this? This is the agents trying to drum up competition and secure a massive deal for what is most likely the last big payday. 27AAV over 5yrs is a massive payday. Agents got the Market wrong and he will get less than 6 yrs because there no longer any leverage. He will be just another star on another team. Dude gave up more than money, he gave up being the face of a franchise and clear cut leader of a team. When Braves jumped on Olson then less than 24 hours blew the doors off with that extension it became “Real”
toycannon
Mariners need to sign him and move Ty France to 2B.
ATLchop
That theory is getting old. Of course his wife has some insight into the decision…I would hope anyone making a huge career change like that would consult and consider their spouses thoughts on where you will raise your family and send your kids to school. But her ONLINE business has been a thing for years and the Freeman’s already own and live in a home in SoCal for 4-5 months out of the year. Would she like a store in Beverly Hills? Of course. But if she really wanted to, she would have and could have done it already. Also, her posting a picture of her and the other wives at dodger stadium means nothing. She posted one from truist at the same time and if you look at her stories she posts these and other pics from stadiums all over MLB almost daily.
bravesfan0618
All I know is it’s been the longest 48 hours for anyone to make up there mind. At least that’s what we were told.

When you say “This is where I want to be” are offered 5/140 28AAV with some possible flexibility and don’t take it, that is talking out of both sides of your mouth. Of course none of us are in these discussions and have the full story. However, it’s playing out horribly. Teams allegedly in on the guy pivot and go in a cheaper direction. It became real when the Braves pounced on Olson and extended him out 8 years. They tried to play other clubs against the Braves by leaking that a decision would be made soon and that multiple offers were on the table. When the Braves dropped out they lost they’re leverage and the multiple teams weren’t willing to go down the “Pujols” contract road. Now even more leverage is gone. Dodgers or any other team don’t have to go 6/180. The current climate is the best deals available and the sad thing is it NEVER had to be that way. When talking out of both sides of your mouth loses it leverage your choices become limited. That is the perception many in Braves country has witnessed Pre/Post Lockout.
OldSaltUSNR
I agree. It’s pretty clear to everyone, including Freeman’s people, that he should have either taken the 5 year Atlanta deal, or if he was really motivated to (for example) return to the West Coast, the first good 5 year deal that was close to, or exceeded the Atlanta offer.
What *** really *** messed up Freeman was the 3 month lockout. The market moving at lightspeed does not favor him, at all. Teams can’t wait to make moves, and he can’t afford to wait. If he had been able to negotiate in December and January, I think it’d have been a different story.
Fred McGriff
It’s really sad about Freddie not being a Brave anymore, however it is of his own doing. I have nothing but respect for Freddie, but if he loved the Braves and the club, 5/`135 was plenty, if he was still good enough at the end of 5, he would have got the 6th. From what Joe Public knows FF made it about the money.
bravesnation nc
I’m looking forward to seeing what Olson can do really I am. But this whole situation with #5 is a mess. Takes 2 to negotiate and I have to say they way AA has worked to construct a team is top notch. I said it earlier I was there at the Divisional and World Series and seen first hand the gratitude for Freddie and how everyone followed his lead. Tell me on what other team do you see that? Dude and his agents gave up more than can be quantified in dollars and cents. Straight up Legacy Status! Pedro Martinez told him in the playoffs “This is where you need to be” a HOF telling him it’s your Team.
tmcca
He is either going to play for Dodgers or Red Sox. Dodgers would like to sign him probably 5 years; Red Sox probably around the same. I just can’t see the Rays. I feel more the Red Sox will. The Yankees pulled out and got Rizzo and speculation was the Sox where aggressive trying to add Freeman what that means we will see.
tmcca
I think Red Sox will swoop him; Yankees think so as well is why they grabbed Rizzo.
tmcca
I heard Dodgers offered 4/120; Red Sox 5/135; Rays ?? This was this morning. Both very close contracts. Dodgers he be making 30ml per at 4yrs; Sox 27ml for 5. At that he probably takes dodgers. Unless sox give an option or buyout.
tmcca
I can see the Red Sox signing Correa and using Freeman as bait basically. Correa is more needed
bravesnation nc
I was wrong and he got 6 162. 27 per if not front loaded. Time will tell but odds are not great for the life of the contract. Only thing now is to kick their a*s during the season and AGAIN in the postseason.
jmi1950
Bloom should call Freidman and trade for AJ Pollack. 2yrs/ 20MM. Solves Sox need for a R/bat to play RF LAD get a couple of prospects and sal relief. Freidman was talking about maintaining a long term plan of prospects.
OldSaltUSNR
Well, Freeman is a Dodgers. Surprise, surprise (not really).
