201 arbitration eligible players have reached agreements with their teams on a 2022 salary, most of which occurred just prior to Tuesday’s filing deadline.
According to Jake Seiner of The Associated Press, 31 arbitration eligible players remain unsigned and are on track for hearings. Due to the lockout, the hearings are expected to take place during the season if agreements are not reached. The full list of unsigned players, which includes Aaron Judge, Willson Contreras, and Dansby Swanson, can be found in our tracker. Judge, having submitted a $21MM figure against the Yankees’ $17MM submission, represents the largest gap at $4MM.
All the other gaps are less than $2MM, and the smallest is the $200K separating Lucas Giolito and the White Sox. Yesterday, Giolito told reporters that the sides were only $50K apart prior to filing, which the righty described as “very unfortunate, disheartening.”
The Braves have five of the 31 cases, with Swanson, Adam Duvall, Luke Jackson, Max Fried, and Austin Riley. Six of the 31 players were traded this offseason: Jesse Winker, Adam Frazier, Gary Sanchez, Chris Bassitt, and Jacob Stallings.
A look at the number of hearings by year in the last decade:
- 2021: 8
- 2020: 12
- 2019: 10
- 2018: 22
2017: 15 - 2016: 4
- 2015: 14
- 2014: 3
- 2013: 0
- 2012: 7
Multiyear deals are always an option, and we record those in our extension tracker.
JD Davis looks off. Maybe $2.76m?
On the Arbitration Tracker, you guys put Craig Biggio instead of Cavan Biggio.
Better check Vlad Guererro Jr & Bo Bichette while we’re at it. Meanwhile, the Jays seemed to have done very well signing sons of major leaguers. Maybe it’s just that easy?
Shh.. it’s a secret. To get better production at 2B this year, Craig is going to wear Cavan’s uniform and play in his place.
Thanks, all set on both.
As always, we await developments.
You should find a new gag. Complaining about how MLBTR publishes breaking news articles ain’t it.
Seriously lads, the Indians aren’t a thing anymore. Say it with me now GUARDIANS.
No
…should have been the Spiders
Eww.
Nope. I’ll always call them the Indians. And bring back Chief Wahoo
Yeah I will always call the Cubs the White Stockings and the Reds the Red Legs. And the Yankees the Hihglanders. And the Dodgers the Robins.
Yanks and Rays trying to field a full football squad with their Arb lists! Can’t recall ever seeing more than their 14…
Small-market teams. Yankees, Rays, Pirates, etc, all suffering to make ends meet.
Hahaha! That was almost a beer-out-the-nose moment, cheers Clip!
Yessir.
File & trial in the Bronx now. Just love the idea of Judge’s arb hearing occuring during the season. Starring – of course – Randy “Lavine” (that’s for “Dylan”).
Ah…lawyers, man.
They always leave me with that fresh, clean feeling. Ya know?
@Yankee Clipper- lol. All of a sudden I’m not even worth $20 million a year? Maybe I’ll sign with my hometown Giants next season, at least they’ll probably pay me for the next 6 to 7 years. Smh
But only one Yankee and No Ray is going to arbitration hearings as of now.
A.J. Preller’s undefeated in Arb hearings… 0 for 0 career!
Hey MLBTR, the Arb tracker doesn’t scroll horizontally on the iPhone, so you can’t see beyond the first 3 columns. Turning the phone sideways sort of helps, but then much of the content is blocked by ads.
Same on Android. And still no option to upvote or mute. I’m waiting on the app update before I pay for my subscription, just fyi to the higher-ups on MLBTR!
It’s true, the infrastructure of our arb tracker was built over a decade ago and it’s not mobile-friendly. It’s on the roadmap for 2022.
Any chance of you changing Indians to Guardians?
Why does that bother you so much? It’s a simple mistake and easy to do.
No
It’s also a simple fix. Houston isn’t listed as the Colt 45s… because that’s not their name anymore.
I wish it was a simple fix, but it’s not. The guy who built the thing 12 years ago hasn’t replied to any emails in years. We don’t have a person on staff that can get into his code and figure that out. We intend to rebuild this thing from scratch.
Thanks for your attention on the matter, Tim. I’m excited for a sweet app update… but I’m not quite holding my breath yet! Aloha
Just leave it. Be unique.
These players get paid an enormous amount of money. I see both sides from the owners and the players perspectives on the issues. That being said, game changing relievers like Hader are being severely hosed in comparison to everyday players. I would say Hader specifically has been absolutely financially abused as he’s been world class for what seems like forever.
World-Class Field Goal Kickers get financially abused too when compared with other positions. Sorry, but Closers and Kickers just aren’t as valuable as Shortstops and Quarterbacks. And they don’t deserve to be paid like they are.
Since the vast majority of these deals were agreed to before the deadline to exchange figures (“avoiding arbitration”), would it not make sense to have the MLBTR tracker just display the cases scheduled for arbitration? It makes for a much easier read to track 30 players instead of 200.
The settled amount is ultimately what the clubs & players agree to AFTER exchanged figures … or the ruling by the arbitrator.
Instead, what is listed is essentially every 3rd-5th year MLB player (or whatever that range is) that did not agree to a extension. Quite a cumbersome list!
In the post, I linked directly to the 31 players. You can do that too if you filtered Signed to No.

Quite surprised JR hasn’t decided to DFA Gioloto over the 50K yet.
Giolito has a personality that reminds me so much of SpongeBob, who once got fired over a nickel.
And just when he looked like he was shedding his image of being a cheap owner with that almost $200 mill payroll, the real JR comes forward. Just can’t part with that 50K for his ace.
LOL at Giolito’s comment. Give me a break.
3 straight top 12 cy for giolito. Buy out one year of free agency at like 35 mil and let a buyout carry his demands.
The new CBA will make this more common now. Next year it will be 40. Now that it’s $700K PLUS….Money will be tighter and players will be younger. Years in the league will be shorter. The Minor Leagues will improve to have players earning $30K-$75K.
Judge isn’t worth close to $21 million!
While he likely won’t get that thru Arb, what do you mean he’s not worth $21 million. Even as a 2/3 part time player he would be worth that on the open market.
@Bjoe- I’m not? Thanks.
Charley Finley was right; arbitration is a completely idiotic system. Ditch it. Make ’em ALL Free Agents, EVERY year.
Hey Tim, think that would increase traffic during the off-season???? WHO SIGNS VLADDY for this year ONLY??? Soto? The Trout-ster? Jake?
Not surprised to see how many cases are going to arbitration considering the big disconnect between players and owners right now.
Braves are a file and trial team, right? Typically don’t negotiate. They just accept the faith of the ruling, good or bad. I do think after a World Series win and considering these guys were key contributors last year, they should just pay them … but whatever. So long as emotions don’t get too mixed up during the debates, it’s fine
They should at least split the difference with Riley and Fried. Do they really want to go to arbitration over $250K?
