Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Can we finally admit that since players don’t want to be paid based on revenue, MLB revenue is irrelevant when it comes to how much players “should” be paid? Thanks. I think we finally had a breakthrough today.
Weasel 2
What? Geez the owners are slime. They collude they lie and they create rules to cap salaries.
Players careers last 3 years on average.
Just what percentage of revenue do you think they take right now?
We Americans have just bought the tripe that the ultra wealth 30 owners have been selling us.
Why? Because we envy the players the salaries they earn.
Let me know an owner goes bankrupt from baseball related losses.
The only real threat to the game is their own greed. Bernie Madoff almost destroyed the Mets. Not because he conspires with the players but because an owners greed led them invest huge amounts of money into the Ponzi scheme.
In general sports teams owners are amongst the worst people on the world. Not all but so many.

They are free to get a different job if they feel they aren’t treated right .. there are thousands who will gladly play in their spot for pennies on their dollar

scab lover!
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
That wasn’t the point, Weasel. People frequently bring up revenue when stating their opinions on what they think players “should” be paid. The players don’t want to be paid based on revenue so revenue is irrelevant.
Vizionaire
i don’t know where you get that info but if the owners are willing to open up books the way other u.s. pro sports, of course the players want their total salary as a portion of the league revenue!
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
The owners will open the books like other sports when the players agree to be paid based on revenue just like the athletes in other sports do. Until the players agree to be like the players in other sports and take revenue based income, the books are really none of their business. NBA players get paid based on revenue. NHL players get paid based on revenue. NFL players get paid based on revenue. That’s why they get to see the books. MLB players refuse to be paid based on revenue and that’s why the books are none of their business. As long as they continue that ridiculous stance the books will never be open. I am all for the players being paid based on revenue so the books will be public. It’s the players that are against it.
Vizionaire
currently mlb players are being paid appx. 30-38% of the mlb revenue. nfl, nba and nhl counterparts are getting around 50% or more. yeah, there is no chance mlb owners are opening books any time soon!
Jean Matrac
“The owners will open the books like other sports when the players agree to be paid based on revenue…”
This is patently false. The owners have always refused to open the books, because they know it will mean having to pay the players more than they have been.
bkbk
This is not accurate. The players CANNOT be paid on revenue unless the owners open the books. The way you worded it makes it seem like a players choice, but its more because the owners have shown to be misleading and actively dishonest.

I didn’t realize that after Miguel Cabrera, there is no 3000 hit guy on the forseeable horizon.
drewnats33
It’s not readily foreseeable, but with a long-term deal and the DH, Freddie has a chance. He has 1,700 entering his age 32 season
truthlemonade
As mentioned in the chat, I think that Jose Altuve is more likely. Altuve is slightly younger, has 73 more hits, a higher career BA, and a stronger track record for racking up hits.
People often point to Fred McGriff as a player whose stats suffered because of the 1994-95 strike. The pandemic and probably work stoppage in 2022 will affect many current players.
drewnats33
Machado might have a shot. He has 1,425 at 28.
truthlemonade
Sure, but Machado isn’t even halfway there. He turns 30 in July.
Rsox
Robinson Cano is 376 hits away. If not for both his suspensions he would probably be ahead of Cabrera right now.
After that the most likely player i can see making a run is Jose Altuve (1223 away).
truthlemonade
Before the 2014 season, a person on the Yankees’ message board was predicting Cano would finish with 2500 hits. Another poster wrote that was impossibly high.
I commented that 2500 was easily within his reach, and that Cano would practically waltz to 3000 hits. I convinced people, because duh.
I had no idea that Cano would be hit with 2 suspensions and a pandemic shortened season. Still, he has 2624 hits with 2 more years left on his contract. If he averages 138 hits in his age 39 and 40 seasons, he would be 100 hits shy of 3000. He would probably come back for his age 41 season, and some team would probably give him a contract.
angt222
If he fell short, I think he’d stay short of 3,000 hits. No one would care that he reached the milestone since he got caught using PEDS so I don’t think a team would give him the chance to try.
truthlemonade
There is a slight possibility that teams will be interested in Cano for 2024 for baseball reasons, not to give him an opportunity to reach 3000 hits.
FSF
And if not for the steroids, he might not have gotten 1,000 hits..
gbs42
O’Neill for Gallo? Yankees fan asking that question, I assume.
DonOsbourne
Seriously. How about we throw in Flaherty for Aaron Hicks?
DarkSide830
Gorman for Andujar?
gbs42
DarkSide, only if you’ll let the Cardinals add Jordan Walker and Matthew Liberatore.

The question from “baseball” was a great one. Tony Franco doesn’t hide from the hard hitting questions!
