Right-hander David Hess announced back in October that a cancerous germ cell tumor had been discovered in his chest, and he would be undergoing chemotherapy treatments to address the issue. Fortunately, Hess provided a great update on his condition yesterday on Twitter, saying that he had “been ’cured’ and cleared for all activity! There’s a spot that we’re watching but expect to clear in a few weeks. I can’t thank everyone enough for the prayers, support, and love through this. Time to get back to work and on a mound hopefully soon.”
A veteran of four MLB seasons, Hess joined the Rays on a minor league contract back in August and appeared in one Major League game for the team, while also twice being designated for assignment and then outrighted off the 40-man roster. Hess elected free agency after the season but rejoined the Rays on another minors deal in November. With this health scare now hopefully behind him, the 28-year-old Hess can now refocus on baseball and look to win a bullpen job in Spring Training.
More from the Rays…
- Reports just prior to the lockout indicated that the Rays were getting trade interest in both Kevin Kiermaier and Joey Wendle, and Wendle indeed ended up being swapped to the Marlins. As Kiermaier tells Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times, Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander took the step of calling the center fielder on the evening of December 1 to inform Kiermaier of this trade interest, even if Neander didn’t think a deal would be completed before the lockout began at midnight. Between the uncertainty of the lockout and the distinct possibility that he could still get traded, it’s “wild times right now,” Kiermaier said. Any number of teams might represent trade matches for Kiermaier as the defensive standout enters the final guaranteed year of his contact, and retaining Kiermaier might not be preferable for the Rays, given the $14.5MM still owed on that deal. Injury concerns are a factor in any Kiermaier trade discussion, and on that front, he told Topkin that he is recovered from his arthroscopic knee surgery from early November.
- Could a Kiermaier trade involve the Rays acquiring a right-handed bat? Topkin writes that Tampa’s “top post-lockout priority seems to be a right-handed hitter who can play first base, and not necessarily a proven big-leaguer.” Yandy Diaz currently sits as the right-handed hitting side of the first base platoon with Ji-Man Choi, though with Diaz also needed at third base, obtaining another first base-capable player would only add to the roster depth. Even if that player is lacking in experience, that hasn’t stopped the Rays in the past — Diaz himself had only 299 Major League plate appearances to his name when Tampa Bay acquired him from Cleveland in the 2018-19 offseason.

Very happy for David Hess! Wishing him nothing but continued health and success!
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Yeah. That’s good news on Hess. That’s the first news I’ve heard on him since the news broke he had cancer.
I can’t imagine the Rays would get very much for KK unless they add more to the deal. I’m sure teams could use him but how much would they really be willing to trade for an injury prone below average bat on a 1- year $14.5 million deal? He’s definitely an MLB starter but that contract looks like it has negative net value. Why would a team give up a good player just to be able to overpay KK for one year and then watch him leave via free agency?

Ok if it’s a salary-type dump, Phillies can send aa 1b/3b Madison Stokes and absorb all the $ for Keirmaier….Sign Schwarber……Time to go over the cap…

Kiermaier for Bohm
cpdpoet
Bohm for 1 yr of Kiermaier? Pretty much a non-starter. At least in my offering, it’s a start, they could throw in one of their inf/of’s on the top 30list..
Bohm is fixable and looking at b-ball ref.com projections for Kiermaier, pretty sure Haseley/Moniak/Vierling can produce at that level…Still would prefer KK though.
bucketbrew35
None of those three can remotely come close to producing what Kiermaier does defensively.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
You guys are drastically overestimating KK’s value. He is an injury prone sub-par hitter under contract for one more year at $14.5 million. Tampa wants to trade him because it’s a salary dump. They could use that money to get a better player. He would never get $14.5 million AAV on the market right now. How about Kermier plus a couple million dollars for absolutely nothing. Tampa might take that deal to save $12.5 million. Bohm?! Are you kidding me. I would never want any team I root for to pay KK $14.5 million for next year. Much less trade a good prospect on top of that and then watch him walk away in free agency next offseason.
If the Phillies were dumb enough to want KK that bad they would just wait one more year and then sign him. That way they could keep Bohm at the same time. Does anyone really think 1 season of KK is worth Bohm’s entire career? I know Bohm wasn’t good last season but talk about selling low on a very high draft pick/prospect. Jesus.
NoSaint
Agreed. If the acquiring team was to assume all of KK’s contract, they would be happy to take back a 30 yr old AA “prospect”.

Kiermaier for either Jesus Aguilar or Garrett Cooper probably makes more sense. Rays and Marlins could probably both throw in a minor leaguer or whatever else would be necessary to facilitate a trade

A couple of prospects for Evan White — expensive but also controlled and super-fixable for the Rays
AlienBob
A gold glove 25 year old first baseman for a overpaid CF with one year of control isn’t much of a deal. The M’s are certainly not giving up on White. Once he figures it out he will be the classic power bat. Unfortunately, he got rushed to MLB due to Covid.
I would not be surprised to see Padlo develop, too. These kids just need patience and at bats at the MLB level.
dabrewcrew
I wouldn’t say he was rushed to the big leagues because of COVID however he might have struggled as much as he did cause of the irregular season. He signed his extension in November 2019 before the collapse was even on the radar for MLB.
Rsox
While he said “a couple of prospects” for White, not Kiermaier i don’t see the M’s having any interest in Kiermaier. They have Kelenic, Lewis and Trammell, and even Haniger to handle CF. That kind of money would be much better spent elsewhere
tbfern
How about a gold glove 25 y/o first baseman who hasn’t figured it out yet for a 3x Gold Glove, 2x DPOY & 1 Platinum Glove Veteran who can fix your outfield NOW. Pretty easy to paint a narrative when it’s somebody you don’t want. I do agree he is overpaid when you factor in his health/weak bat, but it’s not like KK is a scrub & he’s a menace on the base paths. Give me White & another low ball prospect & we have a deal.

Kiermaier’s value is still limited. A $14.6M commitment for an injury-prone defender won’t bring back a low-cost impact bat. The Rays will either have to pay down part of the dollar commitment or attach a prospect to increase the return, neither of which is their preference. I’m not saying he has zero value, but that much money on a one-year deal will limit returns. The Rays will benefit though just by moving Kiermaier’s salary so they can direct that money elsewhere.
Joe says...
Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing a trade involving him and Voit. Not a one for one deal and it would likely involve a third team. But it would benefit the Rays and Yankees.

Kiermier for Hoskins straight up!
Phillies can then go and try to land Story or Bryant to play 3B and move Bohm to 1B or just keep Bohm at 3B and simply sign Rizzo to take over at 1B.
DarkSide830
the Rays wolnt get something at all for KK unless they kick in money – something that wolnt happen.
egrossen
Cubs get KK and Tyler Glasnow
Rays get Frank Schwindel (A Right handed batting 1B).
Glasnow at $6M to rehab all of 2022 is a waste for the Rays. Glasnow and KK gone saves them $20 M in 2022.
Cubs can then re-sign Rizzo (3 years $45 M) and hope Glasnow is healthy and decent for 2023. Then go all in for Tre Turner and another SP (Sean Manea?)
tbfern
I don’t think the Rays would do that deal. I would love to get Schwindel, but I think KK & Glasnow bring too much value to an Outfield & pitching needy club. B/c honestly even 1 year of Glasnow (in that final 2023 year) would give the Rays a chance to be competitive or allow him to raise his stock before the trade deadline and get EVEN MORE from another team. I think Schwindel and a couple of prospects would get it done though.
Rsox
Or the Rays could keep both and wait til Schwindel is DFA’d by the Cubs when the league figures him out and he can’t make the necessary adjustments. The Cubs could re-sign Rizzo with or without Schwindel as he would have no bearing on that decision

Alright Hess!! One of the most popular and wanted guys on here last year. Great news
