The Mets’ deal with incoming manager Buck Showalter was announced as a three-year contract, but while it was reported to be the most lucrative managerial deal in club history, terms weren’t reported at the time. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets some specifics now, however, reporting that Showalter will be guaranteed $11.75MM in total over the next three years in Queens. He’ll be paid $3.5MM this season before earning $3.75MM in 2023 and $4MM in 2024. The signing falls closely in line with the three-year, $12MM deal that Bob Melvin secured when joining the Padres as their new skipper earlier this winter.
A few more notes on the Mets as fans continue to await meaningful updates in CBA talks…
- The Mets haven’t been afraid to jump into the deep end of the free-agent market this winter, but despite some recent speculation about the possibility of Clayton Kershaw as a fit, SNY’s Andy Martino writes that the Mets didn’t have any contact with Kershaw’s camp prior to the lockout. As fun as it would be for Mets fans to dream on a rotation spearheaded by Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Kershaw, most expect Kershaw to either remain with the Dodgers or head to the Rangers, whose stadium is a short drive from Kershaw’s home. The Mets were linked to free agent Yusei Kikuchi prior to the lockout, while Jeff McNeil and Dominic Smith — either of whom could conceivably be part of a deal to bring in some rotation depth — saw their names pop up on the rumor mill last month. Beyond Scherzer and deGrom, the Mets currently project to lean on Taijuan Walker, Carlos Carrasco and some combination of Tylor Megill and David Peterson at the back of the rotation.
- Matthew Roberson of the New York Daily News looks at the shortstop situation for both New York clubs, noting that Francisco Lindor’s presence at shortstop and a growing number of upper-level infield prospects could point to an eventual trade for the Mets. Ronny Mauricio is still just 20 years of age but has already reached Double-A, while 22-year-olds Mark Vientos (Triple-A) and Brett Baty (Double-A) will impact the third base situation in the not-too-distant future. There is, of course, room for the entire group to contribute to the Mets simultaneously, depending on position changes and injuries. That said, the presence of three well regarded left-side infield prospects gives the front office plenty of firepower to make deals at some point down the road if newly minted GM Billy Eppler finds a deal to his liking. Both Baty and Mauricio ranked among Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects last week, while Vientos landed on a list of 15 more who “just missed.” There’s no indication that the Mets have seriously entertained moving any of Mauricio, Baty or Vientos just yet, but their names will surely be popular as teams talk with the Mets post-lockout and again at the July trade deadline.

I’ll go with ‘soft’ if we’re talking about pretzels. Though you can’t really go wrong with either.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Lol. Thumbs up to that. I eat both. You gotta keep the freezer stocked with Super Pretzels and the pantry stocked with Snyder’s. I like to eat sandwiches on pretzel bread, too
rct
haha, hell yeah. Super Pretzels and Snyder’s. Bonus points if you have the plastic barrel of big hard sourdough pretzels.
deweybelongsinthehall
Not sure if many remember Charles Chips. They came delivered by an d milkman type truck on big metal cylinder containers. Every so often my parents would pretzels to the potato chip order. That was a treat because those were so fresh!
inkstainedscribe
They returned to the market here in NC a few years ago. Still in metal cans, but not delivered. I haven’t seen any in more than a year, so it could have been a temporary promotion, or supply chain problems (metal shortages) could have set them back. Great chips.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
I’ve never heard of Charles chips. I bought a box of those big Snyder’s hard sourdough pretzels a few months ago. They didn’t come in a barrel though. They were in a cellophane bag inside a cardboard box. They tasted good but they were all crushed up. I know some Snyder’s pretzels come crushed up but these weren’t supposed to be. The picture on the front showed all of them whole. I think there was only one whole uncrushed pretzel in the entire box so I never bought them again. They should start putting them in barrels again so that doesn’t happen. I was very disappointed. I was so excited to get full size sourdough pretzels and all I got was a bag of crumbs with one full pretzel in it.

There’s a fabulous buffet out in Lancaster County, PA, called Shady Maple. In the same complex is the food store that has an entire aisle of pretzels. I have come out of there with quite the variety of pretzels to perform extensive taste testing. It’s an unending job but someone has to do it. Crunch crunch.

Charles Chips were the stuff! Sooooo good.

We used to get weekly DELIVERIES of those chips. It was rumored for awhile that my brother only had half an arm because we never saw it from the elbow down after the lid opened.

Snyder’s itself actually had some pretty good chips in crazy flavors. It was years ago so they might not make them anymore. They had a knockoff of the Utz Crab Chip which they called “Chesapeake Bay Crab flavor.” They had a Baby Back Ribs flavor. My favorite by far were the Steak and Onion flavor. I’ve never been able to find them again or even another company that makes steak and onion flavored chips. I like how the entire top thread of this article just accidentally became about pretzels and chips. It wasn’t even intentional but we haven’t mentioned baseball one time. I tried some new chips the other day called Lay’s Layers. They were pretty good. They reminded me of Bugels if you’re into those.

Hard to believe some college football coaches make more than twice as much as any MLB manager.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Not really, college coaches work a ton more hours and are responsible for recruiting their players. Apples and oranges.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Do they really work that many more hours? I would have thought it was the other way around since they play 90% fewer games. I guess the money has to go somewhere though since the players aren’t getting paid.
bravesfan88
They are constantly recruiting all year long, and if your college’s coach isn’t recruiting, he’s getting surpassed by someone else’s that is.
It’s like Nick Saban said, “If you’re wasting time thinking about the present and the past, you’re already two steps behind.”
As a college coach, you’re constantly considering what is next for your team and your program.
RunDMC
Recruiting takes up a lot of time and energy and though you have your assistants do a lot of the relationship-building on the recruiting trail, top coaches still need to give facetime to secure 4-5 star guys and now that the transfer portal is an annual thing, recruiting is a non-stop grab for guys while top schools (Bama, UGA, etc.) go through constant lineup recreation because of the draft/transfers/graduation/etc. Add in the power of boosters/donors to the program and you have a lot more noise than what pros have to deal with…not to mention, you know, school and dealing with the maturation of kids rather than expecting someone to do their job. College coaches are perhaps the only teachers paid close to what they’re worth.
LongTimeFan1
I’ll put my money on MLB managers who have a 24/7, 365 job which huge expectations on them in a sport and league watched nationally and around the world with big money at stake..
This not to diminish college coaches.. They work very hard. There’s plenty pressure on them too especially when part of big time programs, or big time local expectations.
Furthermore, all baseball managers, are managers of people. Many players are young and in the spotlight. Some are far from home. There’s no such thing as a 23 year old baseball player who wasn’t once 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16. Some of these players are called up in what would be their college years.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
What exactly do boosters do? Every time I hear about boosters I only hear of them paying recruits to join their alma mater. Isn’t that supposed to be against the rules? Or do they donate to the facility or something? I know the boosters at USC and Pony Express were paying players like Reggie Bush to join the team. I don’t really ever hear of much direct involvement they have other than stuff like that.
deweybelongsinthehall
Ok State’s main booster was responsible years ago for their new stadium.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
What? Baseball managers are certainly not 24/7/365 jobs. I guess it could be argued that they are 24/7/200 in the sense that when they are traveling they are working, but it’s not like off days or 3AM require strategical decisions to be made. And there are only 26 players with about 10 assistant coaches.
College football teams often have 75 or 80 players, and there are all day meetings and practices to attend, film study, recruiting, and just generally being the face of a program. Get real, your take is awful.
DogDays2
Since when is amount paid a direct result from how hard one works?
njbirdsfan
At least MLB managers are paid by a privately owned team, as opposed to the taxpayer who’s forced to pay for used car salesmen oops coaches whether they care about the sport or not.
deweybelongsinthehall
Agree. I’ve always wanted colleges to be taxed like big business since most operate like it.
rct
Colleges don’t have to pay their athletes, so there’s more money available to throw at coaches.
gcg27
They can get paid multiple ways now.. wake up.. or have u been sleeping this past year? Some getting paid millions now
rct
I love when people are condescending but don’t have any idea what they’re talking about. Have I been sleeping? No. Colleges still cannot pay their athletes. Athletes can make money off endorsements and such but the colleges still cannot pay them directly. Which is my point. They only have to pay coaches, so they can spend more on them.
njbirdsfan
My personal favorite is “oh they get paid” in tuition and room and board. Assuming the athlete even wants that compensation (and let’s be honest, there are plenty only there to prepare for the draft) it’s only pennies compared to the billions raked in by college sports. But no one in this country really carea if their “pay” is essentially $1 an hour (if that)
JoeBrady
I was really hoping my kid would get an athletic scholarship. For some reason, it seems like you are saying that the $260,000 is meaningless. I’d be retired right now if they gave me the $260k back.
deweybelongsinthehall
Sorry but I disagree. Why not call them professionals since that’s what they are? Athletes on campus will eventually cause a split like what is destroying this country. They’ve always been treated in many ways like royalty but the difference between the halves and have nots get much worse now that some will be getting paid. There also will likely be a divide amongst the team’s with football skilled positions likely getting more income opportunities than others.
deweybelongsinthehall
And how many others like you Joe are there? Too many to count.
JoeBrady
Once the players win the right to get paid, the whole thing ends. Almost no teams makes money, except FB and basketball. And the money earned in those sports goes to support all other sports, probably all money-losers.
Some of these colleges might have 1,000 students playing sports. At some point, I think the have-nots revert to a club-team concept, while the big sports teams go to a semi-pro type setup.
Some kids will make out well, but my guess is that a lot will be worse off.
JoeBrady

Actually, I was hoping she’d spend the entire summer practicing 3-pointers, show up in the best shape of her life, and hope to get the last seat on the bench. Some of her accomplishments gave me memories to last a lifetime, but one more bragging point would’ve been fun.
For some reason, kids think they should run their own lives, instead of validating their parents’ lives. J/K, but it was a great ride while it lasted.

Well they own the team so they really aren’t spoiled. The players need them. They don’t need the players.
gbs42
Kinda difficult to have a team without players.

My spoiled comment was meant towards the athletes whose egos match the size of Barry Bonds’ head. Amazing difference between the Clark Gillies (RIP) and Aaron Rodgers of the world (sorry to take it out of baseball but those too just came to my mind).
Cosmo2
Always gonna be plenty of people willing to play baseball for a living. How many billionaires are there out there that are willing to deal with this mess?
gbs42
At least 30, and more want in the club.
Cosmo2
I dunno. I don’t think too many of them are lining up to buy MLB clubs. Why? So they can get called greedy for actually wanting a return on the investment? I think you’ll run out of billionaires a lot faster than you will people willing to play.
gbs42
And the players get called greedy because they want to get back some of the share of the pie they had 15 years ago.
How many billionaires can’t withstand the emotional torment of being called greedy? I’m sure they’ve experienced that plenty of times.
My overall point is, both sides need each other, and trying to put the blame fully on either side is wrong.
jim stem
But the owners would still be multimillionaires without a team. What would players as part of the working class?
gbs42
jim stem, sorry, but I don’t understand your point.
“What if…” makes an entertaining Marvel comic book and Disney+ series, but in our world, MLB exists, so it’s irrelevant what the players would do without baseball.
Cosmo2
And what I’m saying is that you can always find players, but there are only so many billionaires willing to invest in an industry that frowns upon their seeking of profit. It’s not about being called names, it’s about the incentive to invest in an industry that fights owners for wanting profits. In what other industry to workers have control to demand a percentage of revenue? It’s a thankless environment for an owner, extremely rewarding for a player. You could slash salaries by 90 percent and you’d still have thousands lining up to be players. You’ll run out of owners VERY quickly. Players can be replaced. The owners? Not so easy. This is what you’re not getting.
gbs42
I actually do get what you’re saying. There are a limited number of people who can afford an MLB team, but there are lots of people who can play baseball.
If that’s the case, why haven’t owners replaced the players? Why not bring in players willing to play for 1/10th of current major leaguers, whether they’re minor leaguers, independent league players, foreign players, beer leaguers, whatever?
Probably because the best players on earth have special talent that drive the demand for their skills, and fans want to see the best of the best. Otherwise, minor league, college, and high school games would have higher attendance.
And who is trying to fight owners for wanting profits? it’s a see-saw battle for the percentage of the profits, not anyone saying the owners shouldn’t make a profit.
And how is it thankless for an owner who is mostly faceless so he doesn’t take the brunt of fan displeasure while enjoying incredible franchise value increases? The players have their salaries broadcast, and fans see these numbers and think the players should be thankful they don’t have to have “real” jobs. No one knows what owners really make. If they did, imagine how much ire they’d get from fans.
In what other industry do workers demand a percentage of revenue? The NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. Comparing sports to other industries is a red herring. The players are the product. Their not auto workers, plumbers, or lawyers who perform a service and/or provide a product for owners to sell. it’s apples and oranges.
What I don’t get is why you think the owners have it so bad. If that was the case, they’d all be selling their teams and getting out of the business of baseball.
And I’m not saying the players have it bad. I’m saying the percentage of revenues has shifted strongly toward owners in the last ~15 years, so I understand why the players want to reverse that trend.
Deleted Userr
Really tough to see Kershaw signing with anyone other than the Dodgers. And they can’t afford to let him walk after not extending the QO anyway. I do wish that people would stop saying “Player X will sign with Team Y because he’s from there/went to college there” but that will likely never happen.

Actually, the Deleo bros are from Jersey. The way I understand it, they all met and made a name for themselves in San Diego, so the band’s birthplace is San Diego. As you probably figured, I’m a big fan lol. They were an amazing live act. No BS, They just played what you wanted to hear and it sounded great every time.
SalaryCapMyth
That’s what fans hope for when they don’t want to pay for another teams players in actual talent. Your plan won’t work because the five starters they primarily used last season are all within arb 2 so that plan won’t work unless you are interested in one of their less heralded starters.
Noel1982
Don’t do that bc Mets fans will act like jd davis and or dom smith are the type of guys Oakland would want for one or more their pitchers or position players
BartoloHRball
JD as a DH and/or Smith at 1B if they move Olson. JD can rake, but he has notable limitations in the field. JD’s defense has improved a bit, but he still isn’t an everyday 3B…but he’s a solid DH. As for Smith, he has an above avg glove and he can hit for average. He doesn’t have a ton of power, but I think with consistent time he can be a starter.
If the A’s trade w. the Mets, I’d expect McNeil to be the centerpiece and/or Maurico…depending on if they are going for a SP and/or Chapman. JD and Smith would be secondary guys w. some upside.
Monkey’s Uncle
“The Mets haven’t been afraid to jump into the deep end…”

I suggested Clayton Kershaw as a player-manager in this thread: mlbtraderumors.com/2021/12/mets-interview-clayton-…
Dump Showalter and bring in Kershaw as a player-manager. Result in a 162-0 season and a championship.

I think overpaying a manager is always a mistake, but Cohen seems to have an ungodly amount of money, so no big deal really. I love Showalter too.

“Concentration and dedication are intangibles and the deciding factors between who won and who lost”. – Tom Seaver
“Tom Seaver was the driving force behind the players, always pushing the team to be better than they were, never letting them settle.” – HOF outfielder and Mets’ broadcaster Ralph Kiner
so, can Buck get his new team to a level of concentration and dedication that equals wins, and can Max, who was renowned for his leadership on the Nats be what Tom was? No and No = the Mets are a .500 team, yes and yes and the Mets are a ??? team, will be interesting to see.
gbs42
Talent and health are big factors, too.
dlw0906
For once the Mets have enough money to buy FAs and not spend prospect capital. It would be short-sighted to trade any of those three prospects.
angt222
All 3 can have a major role in the future especially if the universal DH is official.
Bill M
It depends on the Mets situation at the trade deadline, assuming there’ll be a trade deadline. If they can get a player that can put them over the top, then I can see one of those prospects going. Unfortunately Lindor’s insane contract is blocking all 3 of them from being promoted
Cosmo2
They’re not blocked, some folks are just gonna have to change positions. Luckily, SS is generally the easiest position to do that from. They’re fine.
jim stem
Who is Lindor blocking? Mauricio, like many other players, can shift position now to 2b. Everything I’ve read states his defensive tool set probably will not position him at short anyway.
Jdt8312
They Mets aren’t trading any of those guys. It’s a slow news day, and they have to write about something here. So they over-analyze the Mets today. Steve Cohen has talked about building a strong farm system, while using the free agent market to win now. If he does anything, he’s going to spend more, and let those guys in the minors develop in their own time.
bigbatflip
I’m always surprised how little managers make. Backups and roleplayers often make more than the manager. The market is what the market is though, I guess.
Rsox
Kershaw is not going to leave L.A. for the Mets. The Yankees maybe, but not the Mets
angt222
I think Kershaw retires before joining the Mets. That’s not dissing the Mets but I think his legacy is already set if he can’t extend it in LA or return home to TEX.
BartoloHRball
lol…why would Kershaw go to the Yankees INSTEAD of the Mets? The Mets are the team in NYC now. The Mets also have the easier path in the NL East, as TB + TOR + BOS >> ATL + PHI + MIA. I actually think MIA will surprise people and hover around .500 and possibly finish ahead of PHI, but as a whole…the AL East will be tougher over the next 1-3 seasons.
angt222
Mets still need to add one more SP and at least 2 RPs with one being a LHP. I’m not too concerned with having to trade Dom, McNeil or Davis, as we know, injuries happen and it might be wise to retain that depth.
VonPurpleHayes
I agree with the SP, but I think their bullpen is underrated by virtue of being extremely overworked last year. Their starters were not going deep in the second half. So my point is, if they improve their rotation, their bullpen will get better.
Bill M
True but they still need a lefty in the pen.
jim stem
I’m hoping for a lights out situation lefty and Trevor Rosenthal.
What I’d really like is to see a deal with the Royals for Merrifield and a bullpen arm. McNeil, Davis and a young arm going to the Royals.
Jdt8312
The Mets need bullpen help. We don’t really need a starting pitcher. But we’ve lost Loup, and Familia isn’t signed at the moment. They released Gsellman. Besides Diaz, Lugo, and May, who else is a lock for the bullpen? We have enough starters to fill the rotation, and one extra. The biggest need is the bullpen right now.
HalosHeavenJJ
Kershaw is an interesting case. He’s already rich and a Hall of Famer. We are now left to guess what his goals in baseball are and whether his primary motivation is money, another ring, or being home.
I do think the Angels could make an interesting fall between option. If the Dodgers don’t make him feel loved, he could slide here and play alongside Trout and Ohtani.
He’d stay in the same Phoenix area for Spring Training and have several road trips to Texas. The team isn’t as good as the Dodgers but is better than the Rangers.
Outside shot it happens, but I’m throwing it out there in case it does.
