A few weeks after naming Mark Kotsay manager, the A’s announced their 2022 coaching staff this afternoon. As previously reported, former Tigers and Angels skipper Brad Ausmus steps in as Kotsay’s bench coach. Meanwhile, last season’s hitting coach — Darren Bush — transitions to third base/run prevention coach. Third base coach had belonged to Kotsay before he was promoted to succeed Bob Melvin in the manager’s office.
Replacing Bush as the top hitting instructor is Tommy Everidge, who’s been promoted from the same role at Triple-A Las Vegas. It’ll be the first big league coaching job for the 38-year-old, who briefly appeared in the big leagues with the A’s back in 2009. He spent the bulk of the last decade coaching his way up the Oakland system.
Pairing with Everidge is Chris Cron, who’ll join the staff as assistant hitting coach. The father of Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron, Chris Cron logged some big league time in the early 1990’s and joins the A’s after a long run working with prospects in the Diamondbacks system. Previous assistant hitting coach Eric Martins will slide over to first base coach, with Mike Aldrete vacating that post to serve as quality control coach.
The pitching instruction tandem will remain in place. Pitching coach Scott Emerson is back for his fifth full season in the role. Marcus Jensen, who (along with Bush) drew some consideration in the A’s managerial search this winter, returns to last season’s position as bullpen coach.
So is a third-base/run-prevention coach higher on the food chain than the hitting coach? Asking for a friend. Ok, it’s Steve Cohen.
What is a quality control coach on a baseball team?
It’s a smart move, so after the fire sale all they’ll need is some players to coach. Ahahahaha!
Yes but below the glove fitting instructor and grass length coordinator.
Hmmmm. Chris Cron, Mike Aldrete, Tommy Everidge. Seems the A’s are stockpiling 1B options as coaches in case they do deal Olson…
Maybe Everidge can finally teach not chasing low outside sliders.
Shouldn’t the pitching coach also double as the run prevention coach? That’s what I thought pitchers were supposed to be doing, preventing runs.
i would presume they work with the pitching and fielding coach to coordinate shifts for certain pitchers.
Confused as to why Scott Emerson was retained.
Maybe he’s a good coach?
He’s not. Jesus Luzardo comes to mind.
I know ERA isn’t the best stat, but the A’s as a team finished fifth in the AL in ERA.
They play in a pitcher’s park.
Ok so they play in a pitchers park. So now you then must give Bush more credit.. You dont like ERA so lets look at what counts. Emerson has been the pitching coach 4 seasons .They made the playoffs 3 times. Since then they have the 5th most wins in that time.. 7th in ERA. Thats good.
Give Darren Bush credit, for WHAT?! The funny thing about baseball is that people forget about defense because they don’t play fantasy baseball with defensive statistics. Can you name any pitcher Scott Emerson has developed, made better or any reclamation project? By that same logic part of the pitching coach duties include keeping the pitchers healthy. The A’s best pitching prospects in the last 10 years can’t stay on the mound due to health issues and/or performance – AJ Puk, Luzardo, Manaea, Wendleken, Jeffries and those that aren’t prospects trend in the wrong direction Treinen, Blackburn, Trivino, et al.
Im not here to argue with you..Puk Luzardo Jeffries all had TJ before they were in the Majors. Manaea Montas Irvin made every start. Bassitt might of if not for the liner. Treinen Diekman Hendriks best seasons of there career. Bassitt turned into All Star, Montas Cy Young votes. Manaea solid..Trivino has been good. Petit throwing 86 good. 5th in wins and 7th ERA speaks for its self. When they rebuild and struggle this year, IM sure you will blame him. 27th payroll.
were they inexpensive?
better than your team wasting money on people for name recognition…
Darren Bush‘s removal from the hitting coach position was long overdue.
Poor Kevin Cron not getting a shout out as Chris Cron’s son like his older brother lol
In my opinion, hiring Tommy Everidge as the new hitting coach is an indication that the A’s are going to keep Matt Chapman for the time being. Everidge Worked with Chapman in the A’s minor-league system. A rehabilitated Chapman with a hot bath will be more valuable to the A’s as a trade chip in July at the trade deadline than he is right now.
He needs a hot bath! I assume you meant bat, but good mistake!
Not sure the Coliseum’s plumbing system allows that!
I have been sleeping with the fishes since 1946. If anybody needs a hot bath, it’s me!
Anthony what about the other coaches that were named? Either someone edited out the rest or you didn’t see there were other coaches named here?
