On November 22, Seiya Suzuki was posted by the Hiroshima Carp of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, freeing him up to negotiate with all 30 MLB teams for 30 days. However, it was reported that the recent implementation of a lockout that has led to a transaction freeze has also frozen Suzuki’s 30-day clock. That means that, at the conclusion of the lockout, he will still have around 20 days to work out a deal with an MLB team. At that point, there’s a decent chance of Suzuki winding up in the AL East, according to a report from Sean McAdam of Boston Sports Journal. “One major league source reports the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox have been the most aggressive in pursuit of Suzuki,” McAdam writes.
The fact that Suzuki is garnering interest is not surprising, given his talents. Suzuki came in 20th on MLBTR’s list of Top 50 Free Agents and was predicted to get a contract of $55MM over five years. The 27-year-old seems capable of stepping right into the middle of an MLB lineup, while also providing solid right field defence. Over nine seasons in the NPB, he has hit .315/.414/.570, with that production only growing over time.
The Red Sox make for a fairly logical landing spot, especially when considering the recent trade of Hunter Renfroe. Suzuki could potentially fill the right field vacancy left by Renfroe, with Verdugo manning left field and center field covered by some combination of Jarren Duran, Enrique Hernandez or Jackie Bradley Jr., who was part of the return in the Renfroe deal. That trade seemed to be about adding defence by subtracting offence, but the addition of Suzuki could be a way of replacing that lost offence. Kyle Schwarber, who was acquired by the Red Sox last year and would be a logical Renfroe replacement for 2022, is reportedly looking for a three-year, $60MM deal, meaning Suzuki could potentially be about half as costly on an annual basis, if MLBTR’s prediction is correct.
The fit with the Yankees is a bit less smooth, given that they have a number of outfield options already on hand. On paper, the outfield consists of Joey Gallo in left, Aaron Hicks in center and Aaron Judge in right, with designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton available for the occasional appearance on the grass and prospect Estevan Florial on hand as depth. However, they may be reluctant to rely on Hicks as an everyday option, given that he’s now 32 years old and has dealt with injury setbacks in recent years, including only playing 32 games in 2021. Although he did play 54 of the team’s 60 games in the shortened 2020 season, his last significant action over a full season was 137 games in 2018. Judge, Gallo and Suzuki all have seen limited action in center field, making it at least possible for the club to have all three across the outfield at times. However, none of them are really considered an everyday option at the position, making it something of an awkward arrangement over a full season.
Similar to the Yankees, the Blue Jays also seem to have their outfield accounted for on paper, with George Springer, Teoscar Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Randal Grichuk all pencilled in. However, it was recently reported that the Jays had discussions with the Brewers about a trade centered around Grichuk and Bradley Jr., before the latter was traded to the Red Sox last week. It would appear the club is open to moving on from Grichuk and coming up with a different outfield arrangement. The Blue Jays had a potent offence in 2021 but have since lost Marcus Semien to the Rangers, perhaps motivating them to look to Suzuki as a way to replace Semien’s bat. That would still leave them with a weakened infield, however, as the departure of Semien leaves the club with Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal pencilled into second and third base.

Suzuki: 4yrs/$56mm and Freeman: 6yrs/$210mm ($32mm AAV w/ $3mm bonus/season) get it done Cashman
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
Do the Yankees need another corner OF? They need a CF. Also, holy hell you’re paying Freeman Seager’s AAV.
YanksFan22
If this were to happen, Gallo probably takes over at CF since he has the most experience there out of any player not named Aaron Hicks.
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
Judge was the choice over Gallo last season when Gardner left the game. But you don’t want either of them as your starting CF
YanksFan22
I honestly don’t want Judge in center. I’m fine with Gallo there, mostly because his defense isn’t as good as Judge’s in right field and Gallo has experience in that position.
slider32
Cashman might be looking to sign Suzuki, and trade Gallo to the Phillies or Braves where they need a DH or gold glove caliper LF player. Yanks could get Didi to be a short term SS replacement, or get prospects and Pache to play Cf from the Braves.
VonPurpleHayes
Didi is worse than the Yankees current SS. I know Yankee fans remember Didi fondly, but this trade makes no sense.
CluHaywood
Doubt you are getting Pache back for Gallo.
MALÖRT'dMyPants
I’m sorry, wut? Gallo’s defense is not as good as Judge in RF? He is the back-to-back Gold Glove winner for RF. Your post makes zero sense, amigo.
deweybelongsinthehall
No one is taking Gallo. Yes he provides good to great corner defense but his all or nothing approach at the plate doesn’t play up to his salary.
justinkm19
I would like the Rangers to take Gallo back for Kiner-Falefa

Derek Jeter was a terrible defensive shortstop but won the GG 5 times so that award doesn’t mean much.. .”Most significant defensive metrics shows us that Derek Jeter was perhaps one of the worst shortstops of his generation.”
DRS tells you how many runs better or worse that player has been relative to the average player at his position. The example they give is that a +5 DRS at third base would mean the fielder is five runs better than the average third baseman. For Jeter’s sake, he was 152 runs worse than the average shortstop — far worse than the second-worst shortstop in that time frame (’02-’14), Hanley Ramirez, who registered -73 DRS.
elitesportsny.com/2017/05/13/remember-derek-jeter-…
A-Rod should have played shortstop.
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Did a Yankees fan just suggest that the Yanks could get Pache in a trade for 1 season of Joey Gallo? Gallo was terrible last season and Pache is a top prospect controlled for 6 more years. I was wondering why people on this site always complained about Yankees fans trade suggestions. Now I’m seeing it happen in real time. Why in the world would anyone think one season of Gallo is worth Pache in a trade? It makes sense for the Braves to acquire Gallo but not in exchange for any of the teams top 10 prospects. Certainly not the #1 prospect like Pache. The Braves could probably get a lot more than one season of an outfielder coming off a bad year for their #1 prospect. I don’t think anyone would trade a top prospect for Gallo right now. What is this guy thinking? I don’t keep up with everything in baseball but even I know that is crazy.
Joe says...
Though I see you made the jump from singular fan to multiple fans all in one post. Good job.
butch779988
At their peaks, Nomar was better than Jeter. Not close.
deweybelongsinthehall
Do saberstats take into consideration those playing around him? In Jester’s case, playing for part of his career with Canoe and Tex on one side allowed him to cheat towards third. On the other side of the coin is a player’s smarts. Where he shined along with people like Pedroia and many others is with their head and heart.
deweybelongsinthehall
Multiple batting titles but Jeter never sulked. I have pics from the 07/01/04 game where Nomar cemented his leaving Boston by refusing to play. He later apologized and admitted he was wrong. I had a perfect seat for that Jeter catch in the stands that is so famous…except it was empty as I already had left.

Why bud on Freeman? All you’re doing is upping the cost on future players. Who really thinks he’s not re-signing with Atlanta? This is not a Job Lester – Red Sox type situation. Freeman is simply the best home grown Brave since Chipper and is not going anywhere.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Dewey – Unless Freeman budges on his 6th year and/or his $30M/yr. request, I don’t believe Atlanta will re-sign him. Since they are a publicly owned franchise, they follow different rules when it comes to adding players/costs to the team. I know Freeman is the heart and soul of the Braves, but he’s not the heart and soul of the share price. I can see Atlanta drawing a line in the sand (5/$140M or 6/$150M) and if he won’t accept that, they will move on. That’s why you see the stories of AA checking in on Rizzo and Matt Olson. He needs to have Plans B, C and D ready in case the board decides not to pay Freeman what he is asking for. It would be a travesty to see him leave but you can’t argue with the success of the Braves or AA since he’s arrived. I hope they end up meeting in the middle and Freddie remains a Brave for life but it’s far from guaranteed that it will happen.
Traffickers
the Red Sox are the only of these teams with any sort of RF need…. 90% chance he signs west coast and this is complete BS
JeffreyChungus
Freeman’s AAV would be $35M, not $32M. AAV is calculated by guaranteed money over the life of the contract. Not sure what a $3 mil bonus per season even means if you’re just adding it to your proposed $32M AAV
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@creacher- pass on Suzuki, maybe the Yankees can sign Freeman for 5 years, but not for 6 years. If Freeman wants that he is better going elsewhere.
billysbballz
Where does Suzuki play???? Unless they are dealing Gallo or Gallo is moving to first where are you fitting Suzuki and Gallo? Neither one is a cf!

Suzuki, if acquired, would have to be the starting CF. Gallo / Judge are not starting CF. Or, I could see Cashman comprising a trade with Gallo & some others for a true CF. There are a few options, some good, some not so much.

VonPurpleHayes
Phillies currently have 1 starting OF and 1 quality backup. So they need a CF and LF, not to mention backups.
ericl
Suzuki to the Jays makes little sense. The Jays are already a right-handed heavy hitting team. They need to add a lefty bat to that group. Suzuki doesn’t fit that description.
Dustyslambchops23
I think the jays need to get more lefty handed is overstated. It would be nice to have a middle of the order lefty bat to break up springer bo Vlad teo, but getting a lesser player just because he bats left and he’ll end up batter 7-9th really isn’t going to make a difference.
Plus Jays hit really well against RHP, surprisingly they weren’t great against LHP, especially LH starters
Landing Suzuki for just money will allow them to move Teo or Lourdes for a 2b or Starting pitching

This list doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. He’s not needed in TOR. NYY need a CF, and he is not that. Cleveland would fit, I am looking at SF. I just don’t see any major bidding war.

Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Rsox- Nah pass, Gallo or Hicks can play centerfield. They’ll be fine. Suzuki is no need. The Yankees need more lefty contact hitters.

whyhayzee
I don’t completely understand why really good centerfielders have become such unicorns. It seems like 4/5 of the non first basemen infielders play shortstop, but that 4/5 of the outfielders play the corner outfields? And then the ones who are really, really good at CF can’t hit much at all. Strange.
seamaholic 2
Because baseball has evolved to where all the position players have to be mashers. The standard you have to meet in order to be a glove first anything (except catcher) are so incredibly high that almost no one’s good enough. So teams would rather have a big hitter who can handle himself OK in center than a weak hitter who’s a great fielder.
One of the things I hate about modern baseball. There are some great fielders out there, but many fewer than there used to be because everyone’s got to be a great hitter first.
Yankee Clipper
Sounds like you’re describing devolution instead of evolution in baseball.
NewYorkSoxFan
His swing fits perfectly in Fenway. This would make the Renfroe deal make a lot more sense.
seamaholic 2
Yup. Even if it’s not Suzuki, there are so many really good corner outfielders (at least from the hitting perspective) available that the Sox probably figured they could pick up one of them no problem.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Suzuki in Fenway would be an excellent fit. He has the speed/glove/arm to man the huge RF in Boston and he is a line drive hitter with power, so he’d tattoo the LF Monster with his bat. With 81 home games at Fenway, he’d most likely hit 40-50 doubles every season.
There’s always a risk signing stars from the Asian leagues as you don’t know for sure how their skills will translate in the majors but for $11M-$15M per year, it certainly seems worth the risk. If Boston really wants him, offer him a 5/$70M deal ($14M per season) with a pre-approved counter offer of 5/$75M should he balk at their first proposal. Don’t mess around with a $10-$11M per year offer and hope that’s good enough to win his services. Go out and get him; leave no doubts. By all accounts, this guy is the best offensive prospect to come out of Japan in years if not decades. The Sox can’t afford to allow another AL East team to swoop in and outbid them. With the exception of Jarren Duran, Boston does not have any OF prospects ready to join the team anytime soon, so Suzuki makes all the sense in the world for them. Get it done Chaim! (Once this silly lockout is over of course). Hopefully Suzuki doesn’t get scared off by the labor issues and decide to withdraw his name from consideration. That’s really the only thing that should (or could) prevent Boston from signing him. Fingers crossed that he’s patient enough to wait this silliness out.
pasha2k
Chaim needs to buckle up n play with the big guys. He can not allow the big guys to muscle him outta scoring on Suzuki. Chaim has yet to show me he can play with them cuz if Cashman wants him Chaim has no chance.
Inside Out
Since the source is obviously his agent, I take the info with a big dose of skepticism
Austinmac
Can teams talk with him now even if they can’t sign the final agreement? I would think they can since he is not on a roster.
Salvi
Officially? No. But calling his agent to see if he could eat 60 million sushi in 5 years isn’t.
seamaholic 2
Yes they can actually. He’s not a member of the MLBPA. They just can’t sign him to a major league contract (and thereby make him a member of the union). Teams can also talk all they want to minor league players, and sign them to minor league contracts. Same principle.
smuzqwpdmx
Then the lockout works nicely for him. He gets more time to negotiate a better contract than he was supposed to.
Joe says...
He can’t sign now. And remember, no free agents are on a roster.
padresfan111323
Are they allowed to sign him during the lockout because he’s technically not an MLB player?
Salvi
He would become a ‘Scab’ and the Union wouldn’t allow it, when the CBA is settled.
Salvi
He would become a ‘Scab’ and the Union wouldn’t allow it, when the CBA is settled.
Fever Pitch Guy
denny – Posting the exact same thing twice doesn’t make your comment any less wrong. A scab is when you cross a picket line, when you decide to play while the players are on strike. This is a lockout, not a strike. Big difference.
DarkSide830
no, because he’s been posted and that’s a CBA thing.
seamaholic 2
The posting system is not part of the CBA. It’s a separate agreement.
Dorothy_Mantooth
No they cannot talk with Suzuki or his agent about a major league deal. Regardless of his current status (IFA), no team can sign or negotiate a major league contract during the lockout. Teams can sign free agents to minor league contracts but they cannot even promise that player an invite to Spring Training in the contract. It has to be a pure, minor league only deal. So no team can sign Suzuki to a Major League deal right now and they are technically not even allowed to speak to the player or his agent right now about a major league contract. This is why they have postponed the 30 day window to agree to a contract with him because they can’t negotiate right now.
Once the new CBA has been signed, they pick up where they left off (I think there is around 22 days left in the 30 day window to work out a deal). The longer this lockout goes, the likelier it is that Suzuki withdraws his name from consideration as he’ll want to ensure his income for next season and know that he’s going to play.
GASoxFan
I just wonder as a work around… they can’t promise a ST invite… but can they sign a guy to a straight MiLB deal, with a player opt out if they aren’t added to a 26 man roster by a certain date?
That takes the form of a negative, it’s not promising anything.
So, could you sign Suzuki to a 60m minor league pact, and put in there the player opt out if he’s not added to a 26 man roster within the 45th day of the season for example.
Theres no limits on peak milb salary….
oldredgunslinger
Apparently, the Rangers are hot and heavy after Suzuki also.
KD17
As always this seems like much ado about nothing for Red Sox fans. They don’t have the money to sign him because Bloom spent so much on Wacha and JBJ. $73M payroll reduction since he gave away Mookie and Price and Pedroia and Panda dropped off the books and what does Boston have to show for it? Lots and lots of inexpensive mediocre players.
How many guys costing over $12M a year has Bloom signed in his career? ZERO!!!.
Suzuki’s price tag puts Boston over the luxury tax first threshold!! That’s not supposed to happen under Bloom so forget about Suzuki and thank Bloom for Wacha and JBJ instead!! Still can’t see what people see in this guy!! All I see are mistakes!!!!
cito's mustache
Boston’s $19M from the 1st luxury tax tier (according to Roster Resource) so Suzuki wouldn’t put them over. (provided it doesn’t change in the next CBA)
There’s also no guaranteed salary to any outfielders beyond ’22 on the roster, so Suzuki would seem to be a nice fit for the Sox.
seamaholic 2
As a fan of a different team in need of a corner OF, I’d be very happy if the Sox cast their lot with this guy. That will just free up the Schwarbers and Confortos and Bryants of the world for less wealthy teams. So go get him Chaim.
JoeBrady
KD spent all last season claiming the Red Sox were over the cap because they traded for Robles $2M salary. I tried to explain that, since they traded for him 2/3rds of the way thru the season, he remaining salary was only $667k, and pointed out articles to him showing that MN picked up $500k of the remaining $667k, so the real cost to the RS was only $167k.
KD17
cito mustache – Your numbers might be wrong. Do the math yourself and don’t forget to include all the guys who make under $1M because they are controlled by the Red Sox. The latest spotrac numbers total
Payroll Type Total
Competitive Balance Tax Threshold $210,000,000
Total AAV/Payroll $186,050,000
Estimated Player Benefits $16,000,000
Estimated Minor League Contracts $2,250,000
Proj. Comp. Balance Payroll $204,300,000
Comp. Balance Tax Space $5,700,000
After Bloom decimated the outfield it would be nice to acquire talent in hopes of replacing some of the talent wasted by Bloom. 2023 has many more dollars available so if the owners are willing to take a luxury tax hit in 2022 then it’s possible. Bloom clearly hasn’t figured out how to lessen payroll without taking a huge hit in talent level so it’s probably for the team if he doesn’t attempt payroll clearing since he’s so incredibly bad at it.
cito's mustache
Take it up with RosterResource because they’re not my numbers lol.

Cashman might be looking to sign Suzuki, and trade Gallo to the Phillies or Braves where they need a DH or gold glove caliper LF player. Yanks could get Didi to be a short term SS replacement, or get prospects and Pache or Waters to play Cf from the Braves.
Yankee Clipper
I understand where you’re coming from but Didi was one of the few players worse at SS than Torres last year. They need to get a real SS and stop acting like the A’s. It’s impressed us all that they can act like they aren’t super wealthy. But they are the wealthiest team in MLB, by over one billion dollars. Get a real SS and act like you own the number one team in North American sports history.
seamaholic 2
That seems like an awful lot of moving parts when they could just sign a SS, and trade a prospect (or Torres) for a CF.
PinstripedPride
Honestly what I would do is sign Suzuki to that predicted five year deal and then trade Gallo to a team who needs corner outfield help, like the Padres or Braves. Suzuki is now your starting left fielder.
Then I would trade what it takes to get Kiermeier from the Rays– take on the injured Glasnow in a Tampa-style salary dump if needed. Now the Yankees have not only a true centerfielder, but one of the best defenses in the game.
After that, trade for Olson and either pay up for a SS free agent or trade for IKF from the Rangers.
Fred McGriff
@PinstripedPride
Why would the Braves take on Gallo? That is not happening.
slider32
He is a hyper-charged Joc Pederson, and all NL teams need a good DH, he is also a better outfielder for the same price.
Joe says...
The Yankees might make one major trade but no way they gut the farm for multiple trades on that level. They will also most likely need to involve a third team in any deal with Tampa.
PinstripedPride
@Joe I don’t think so on Kiermeier. He’s getting too expensive for Tampa’s liking and he’s also not a real “star” in the sense of all-around performance. Salary dump would ease the prospect payout.
As for IKF, he is also not going to cost a bundle. Definitely not a “farm-gutting”.
The only trade that will hurt and require a major package of prospects is the hypothetical Olson one.
All of this is doable for the Yankees– if they want to
Joe says...
Kiermaier is controlled for two years and was a 3.4 WAR player last year. I don’t think he’s going to be cheap. Especially for the Rays to deal him to the Yankees even in a three team trade.
Ma4170
Kiermaier is not good… never plays a full season, offense is mediocre at best, and defensive value is overstated as always in WAR… any team would do well to steer clear of him
Zonedeads
Kiermaier can play defense and that’s it! The rays would have to eat the whole contract or attach a prospect to get someone to bite. No one wants him
slider32
Nobody should trade with the Rays, they will lose!
seamaholic 2
So true. Strangely enough, the one team to beat the Rays in a trade the last few years was the Rockies, who got German Marquez and Jake McGee for Corey Dickerson.
Yankee Clipper
Does anyone else find it shameful that we are confined to coming up with IKF-level trades to fill SS in the most talented SS class in recent FA history?
Or that we have to figure out which LFer will play CF for us? Goodness, exactly how far are we willing to go to prove we are just another team? It’s almost like we are embarrassed to be the most valuable franchise.
Joe says...
I couldn’t agree more Clipper. Sucks that Semien got away. Hoping for Story. I just can’t make myself want Correa though if by some miracle this Christmas Hal is visited by the ghost of George and decides to act like the owner of the Yankees, I will get on board with Correa.
FWIW I don’t think Texas is really going to trade IKF.
Yankee Clipper
“Ghost of George “ lol… I wish, man.
I agree with you completely on IKF. They know what they have with him as a very valuable utility guy and they obviously haven’t hampered themselves by restricting funds/spending.
Meanwhile, Hal’s enjoying his Christmas gifts from the other owners for supporting them more than winning with his own team….
slider32
Volpe and Peraza caused the Yanks to change course, fans should be happy they are not over spending for a SS this year. It just means they like their prospects.
reflect
Since this guy isn’t already in the league and thus not in the union, the freeze technically doesn’t prohibit a deal with him, no?
Salvi
How would he sign without a CBA? Would he make up his own rules. Does he get travel per diem, union representation in a grievence? Does he have to adhere to the 1200 page CBA agreement? He would be one scab playing with 800 union members. Not happening.
Joe says...
Difference in a lock out and a strike is the owners do the lock out. That means they aren’t signing major league contracts. In order for a “scab” to exist, there must be a strike.

The Red Sox are positioning themselves well to bolster their lineup and improve the overall defense shift Enrique Hernandez to 2nd Base and make a play for Suzuki, while also giving Duran an opportunity to platoon or earn a starting role in the OF. JBJ can start, or come off the bench in late game situations. It will be interesting to see if Schwarber will price himself out of Boston, or become a mainstay for the next several seasons. I doubt there is a 3-year $60M market for his services…Dalbec will mature with additional at bats.

I suspect that if the sox sign Suzuki they won’t be resigning Schwarber unless JD Martinez is traded. I do think that trading Renfroe is a prelude to signing Suzuki.
Old York
Yankees have been penny pinchers lately so I doubt they pursue him.
Yankee Clipper
“ Yankees have been penny pinchers lately”….Lately? I get your point but it’s the same roster payroll as 2005! The only semi-splurges came in 2009 & 2014, and none after the implementation of the progressive tax penalty. They’re weak.
Old York
Fair enough. With that said, their roster is chock full of 3-outcome players and that is not going to win you a championship.
Redwolves3
Seiya Suzuki … guess Zaidi hasn’t heard of this player!
acell10
The Red Sox have been linked to Suzuki for quite a while now so this isn’t totally surprising. I suspect that trading Renfroe before the CBA expired might have been prelude to this type of signing. He would fit in well with the red sox needs.
rocky7
That of course is presuming that teams that might be “in” aside from the Sox, decide not to re-enter bedding on him once the strike is over and teams are allowed to negotiate and actually sign players……every day the strike goes on, puts any kind of pre strike “handshake” deal Bloom thought he had much more questionable…..if this guy has the credentials that we”ve read, I don’t doubt he will have multiple bidders for his services so if the Sox are counting on numbers pre-strike, they probably will be quite surprised on what those numbers have risen too now that teams have had the chance to think about how Suzuki might fit in their outfield.
acell10
It’s not presuming that at all. Chances are they know what he’s asking for and are prepared to re enter the bidding process regardless.

How about to Minor League contract then upgrade to MLB after Lockout is over,
seamaholic 2
No major league quality free agent would agree to this. Minor league contracts are non-guaranteed. What happens if he blows up his knee in spring training?
MALÖRT'dMyPants
Fascinating. All three teams are from the AL East. No East Coast bias here at all. My guess is Suzuki doesn’t end up on any of those teams.
CluHaywood
I’d like to see the White Sox in on Suzuki. At least kick the tires. Do SOMETHING. They have 2 glaring areas of opportunity, and haven’t managed to seriously address or even inquire about filling them.
azcrook
He goes to the Giants………West Coast…..already have Japanese speaking staff members…AND the Giants have the payroll space available without handcuffing their long term payroll objectives
AlienBob
He is going to the Mariners, The M’s have his idol Ichiro Suzuki who appeared in Japan for the retirement ceremony of Japanese star Daisuke Matsuzaka Friday, They are also the closest franchise to Japan. No way he flies 15 hours to Tokyo from New York or Boston.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Interesting comment, given that you mentioned Matsuzaka. It’s my understanding that Daisuke stayed on the East Coast when he was with the Red Sox rather than make the commute to Japan to sleep there after his outings.
jaysfansince1977
Alienbob, that same old and tired narrative was used a few off seasons ago about Ryu, and how he would never sign in Toronto because it was farther from Korea than a west coast team.
kingbum
Boston should just get the proven commodity….sign Schwarber move Verdugo to right….re sign Jose Iglesias….easy peasy forget Suzuki or Freeman
sox4ever
Yankees don’t need another corner outfielder
JoeBrady
Good to see that several of the posters noted that the NYY and TOR likely aren’t competitors for Suzuki. Looks like a good fit for the WS, but I think they are already up to $194M. You can never tell when the ‘mystery’ will jump in, but I feel good about the RS on this one.
ClevelandSteelEngines
After reading this report, I don’t know much but it seems like the only legit candidate for Suzuki in the AL EAST appears to be Boston. Yankees and Jays failed to clear the necessary hurdles before the CBA expiration. The report that the Jays also wanted to get Bradley seems to suggest there was a race between them and the BoSox to open their RF spot. But until they figure that out, they are behind.
As much as I’d like Suzuki’s bat on the Sox, I’m left wondering: aren’t there pressing holes to fill in the bullpen? Using most of the money left under the ceiling to sign Suzuki seems odd. Maybe not, Bloom could have something or someone in mind. I guess I can say that I will be about as amazed as watching a magic show. I know that I will be surprised but I don’t know how I will be surprised.
CF78
That’s the thing… No one knows what the ceiling is now. It’ll more than likely rise, as that’s something that the players union wants for obvious reasons.
kylegocougs
Offense or offence?
CF78
It’s offense….idk what the heck offence is.
Yankee Clipper
“Offence” is old English and also used widely in Europe still (long live the queen?). Anyhow, it’s offense for any US person.
Unless you want to talk about football (meaning soccer) and say, “Manchester United’s football offence sucks” then I guess it’s okay, ya know, in context.
Poster formerly known as . . .
“Offence” is the British spelling. “Offense” is the American spelling. It’s the same word. If you cross the border into Canada, you’ll encounter “offence,” not “offense.” Elizabeth II is the Canadian monarch and they like their British spelling.

The Yankees would be well served if Hicks finally moved on to a career in the PGA.
A Blue Jay from Cuba
We don’t need Suzuki ,what we need is lefty hitters like Conforto , Schwarber
RobM
Adding Suzuki wouldn’t be difficult for the Yankees at all if their plan is to shift Hicks into the Gardner/4th OFer role. Gallo can handle center with Hicks as his backup. Suzuki takes over in LF. Or, they could simply trade Gallo. Teams have contacted them for a trade.
Yankee Clipper
Very true. In fact, cleaning up their roster in about 3 – 4 moves, including Suzuki, is only prohibited by their own self-imposed restrictions.

The Redsox will sign Correa at 6 or 7 years with a 35-40 mill AAV & Suzuki. That is the smart moves with Bogey opting out after 2022 & Marcelo Mayer being 18 years old. Suzuki definitely fits Boston & he’ll be loving that he chose us for those 4 or 5 years too with our cash & farm coming started in 21 & will continue every year for 22, 23 & 24 with studs!
Casas, Yorke, Jordan or Alex B, Bobby D already here, Arroyo…Whitlock, Houck, other arms comin…gonna be fun for Suzuki & he will murder Funway with his hit charts.
Yankee Clipper
I don’t see Correa taking six or seven years. I believe he will get at least eight, likely ten. I don’t see anyone paying 40MM AAV for that long (10 years).
AL34
No way Correa comes to the Red Sox, Bloom was brought in to bring payroll down. Baeggarts is as good as gone as well after the season. We are the Tampa Bst Red Sox.
whyhayzee
Tampa Bst Red Sox?
I think the Red Sox best them.
Tampa Bested by Red Sox.

Sorry People but I have no confidence in Bloom picking up Seiya Suzuki . He always comes up a day late and dollar short. With the lockout, this was the time to offer Wacha a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training not 7 million which he did not deserve. He does this players like Martin Perez and Garrett Richards. Those two were awful.
whyhayzee
And yet they had a shot at the World Series.
AL34
Would you have traded a guy Renfroe who hit 31 home runs this year for Jackie Bradley JR. Who hit 161 and two maybe prospects one sho did not play in 2020? I would not have

Team way overachieved and yet if he had picked up two decent relief pitchers at the trade deadline we might have been in the World Series.
JoeBrady
Okay, so the team way over-achieved and you dislike all their off-season moves. So how many wins are you predicting this year?
AL34
With an injured Sale, No EROD, a loss of 31 home runs and a 161 hitter in his place, maybe 83 wins
KD17
whyhayzee – Seriously? They had no shot at the World Series. They didn’t even belong in the playoffs with their talent level. Thank goodness JD, Bogey and Devers along with Eovaldi and Houck carried them far beyond where they deserved to go based on talent.
JoeBrady
He does this players like Martin Perez and Garrett Richards. Those two were awful.
=============================
That’s only because you don’t understand the statistics. Richards was 7-8 and had an ERA+ of 97. Perez was 7-8 with an ERA+ of exactly 100. That makes those two guys almost exactly league-average.
Tomdocmac
KD17: Matter the subject you always circle back to Bloom. DD is gone. Move on!
KD17
Torndocmac – How better to see what a crap job Bloom is doing than comparing him to the gold standard who should have never been fired!!!
I will move on when I decide to move. Not sure why you feel you can tell others how to think and behave but apparently you do. Next time make a baseball comment that provides insights into the discussion rather than commentary on life advice for others.
Fever Pitch Guy
KD – I remember many year ago the Red Sox had a player named Move On. He was a big guy, had incredible power, lefthanded batter, played first base, wore #42 and once got into a fight with Mike Gator Greenwell.
Those were the days!

What is wrong with defence, offence? It is how they are spelled in the rest of the English speaking world.
You are critical of the author for using an alternate spelling then you use TBH … too funny.

“Embarrassing” is spelled with two R’s … in both the U.S. and the U.K.

Really want the halos to grab this kid.Let Adell and Marsh platoon and mature at the big league level.Suzuki works pitchers and that’s contagious with young kids and major props from the vets because they know your using your head because of pitch counts today.
Spare Tire Dixon
Oakland has a LOT of pieces that would help the Yankees. Matt Olson (1B), Ramon Laureano (CF), Manaea/Bassitt/Montas (SP), Sean Murphy (C) would all fill some significant holes.
Would they give up Jasson Dominguez to fill multiple areas of need at once??
