The Marlins have shown interest in the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. There isn’t any indication that a deal was close prior to the lockout, and it remains to be seen if Arizona would be even open to moving Marte at all.
As Rosenthal plainly puts it, the D’backs “would need a monster package to move Marte.” The former All-Star is entering his age-29 season and is controlled through the next three seasons — an $8MM salary in 2022, and then club options for both 2023 and 204 that would pay Marte a total of $22MM if both options were exercised.
Marte broke out with a huge 2019 season that saw him finish fourth in NL MVP voting. After a disappointing 2020 campaign, Marte rebounded to hit .318/.377/.532 with 14 home runs last season, though he was limited to only 90 games due to a pair of hamstring injuries. In both 2019 and 2021, Marte has enjoyed large BABIPs and wOBA totals that have outpaced his xwOBA, so there is some question about just how sustainable his elite production is, plus his speed and baserunning skills have been in decline. Still, Marte makes a lot of hard contact and rarely strikes out, and it is possible he could use a change of scenery given the Diamondbacks’ dismal results over the last two seasons.
Between Marte’s age, ability, and his very reasonable contract, Rosenthal points out that the D’backs would want more for Marte than they received in either the Paul Goldschmidt or Zack Greinke trades. To put it in perspective, Arizona received two MLB-ready younger players (Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly), one notable prospect (Andrew Young, who has since made his big league debut) and a Competitive Balance Round draft pick from the Cardinals for Goldschmidt back in the 2018-19 offseason. For dealing Greinke to the Astros at the 2019 trade deadline, the D’Backs got four prospects in return.
Miami could be a team well-suited to meet the Diamondbacks’ high asking price, given how the Marlins have been open to trading from their surplus of starting pitchers. The Fish have lots of young pitching depth in the minors and even some names from their current big league staff could be available, with Elieser Hernandez and Pablo Lopez considered to be available. (Sandy Alcantara can be safely removed from the list of trade candidates considering his recent five-year extension.)
The Marlins would presumably deploy Marte in center field, with Jesus Sanchez and the newly-acquired Avisail Garcia flanking Marte in the corners. However, defensive metrics are mixed at best (-8 Outs Above Average and -12 Defensive Runs Saved, but a +2.3 UZR/150) on Marte’s glovework as an outfielder, and while his numbers as a second baseman are similarly unspectacular, Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen indicated that Arizona would likely keep Marte as something close to a full-time second baseman in 2022. Playing the infield could help keep Marte healthier, but the Marlins might also view Marte’s outfield defense as improvable if he is focused on playing only center field, whereas the D’Backs moved Marte around between center, second base, and shortstop.
In other trade talks between the two sides, Rosenthal writes that the Marlins also checked on Kelly’s availability. Presumably, Kelly is no longer on Miami’s radar now that the Marlins have acquired Jacob Stallings to fill their catching vacancy.
LordD99
They just signed Melancon. I don’t think they’re moving Marte.
RunDMC
If he has another AS season-start…they could easily flip him and his contract to a more competitive team and there’s always a sprint for bullpen help, especially established closers.
ATL could afford that package for Marte with 3 years of control.
stymeedone
@runDMC
Who cares whether the team he is traded to is “competitive”? You want to trade with the team with the best prospects and Miami has plenty! If you wait until midseason, the teams with the deep farms may not be the teams looking to add.
RunDMC
That response was for Melancon, who you would try and flip for the best possible return – not Marte, who you would only trade for an overpay.
DonOsbourne
Ya, I wouldn’t read too far into that signing. I’m sure they had some cash to spend and a short term commitment on a reliable yet affordable player that can be traded at the deadline made too much sense.
bbatardo
I’d be highly surprised if Melancon finishes his deal with the Dbacks. Wouldn’t be surprised if he got moved at the deadline if he’s doing well.
RunDMC
Agreed. He has a business/home in the AZ area – seems more like a convenient fit (done right before the CBA lockout, no less) than anything. If he really wanted to be there he’d have some kind of language regarding even a partial NTC (even if sacrificing some in dollars).
rocky7
Does Melancon put them over the top….don’t think so…probably just shoring up a short bullpen with an option that gives them the ability to flip him at the trading deadline when they have no hope of the playoffs.
sidewinder11
Miami’s top pitching prospects (Cabrera, Sixto, Meyer) would have to be on the table to bring in Ketel Marte. Maybe Bleday too. I’d see if NYY is willing to part with someone like Anthony Volpe for him instead.
Ronk325
No chance the Yankees would give up Volpe for Marte and honestly I don’t see them being in on him at all. Marte is going to be a full time 2B sooner rather than later and the Yankees have an abundance of options there
JohhnyBets67
Maybe Dominguez. Salary savings are important to them but no shot it’s Volpe. Not sure I’d want a package around Dominguez if I were AZ anyhow.
rivera42
Hell yes I’d give up Volpe(plus more) for Marte. Hanging on to Dominguez though.
Ronk325
Why would you want the Yankees to trade a blue chip prospect for a 2B? That would makes no sense whatsoever
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
you realize he plays 2b 3b rf lf cf at a high clip right? Volpe is trash lol I wouldn’t give up Marte to bank on Volpe
myaccount2
Volpe is far from trash.
Ronk325
Way to show how clueless you are Spend. Marte has only ever played CF, 2B, and SS in the big leagues and has only shown the ability to competently play 2B. Volpe is also a borderline top 10 prospect. Marte is a very good player and would fetch a strong return but he’s not a guy the Yankees should be after
Rsox
He has played 3 games in his career at 3B and has never played LF or RF and he doesn’t play CF at a “high clip” as the article even states. Even the D’backs recognize that and are moving him back to 2B
Yankee Clipper
Volpe is just as, if not more, valuable than Dominguez. He plays better defense at a more premium position and has a better bat – currently.
I think the Yankees will be very hesitant to part with either, understandably. Certainly not for Marte, whose offensively sound, but lacking on defense.
If they’re going to part with high-level prospects it’s going to be for Olson or Chapman.
Rsox
Agreed. Trading for Marte would be superfluous with LeMahieu and Torres already on the roster. The Yankees need a SS not another 2B. There are too many options available in free agency at varying price range and skill sets to trade premium prospects for a player who is not an actual fit for the team
rocky7
No way the Yankees are trading Volpe…even for Marte…..
JohhnyBets67
Dominguez is a lesser prospect than Volpe is today. Dominguez is riding his signing hype. He hasn’t produced anything as a professional thus far. He also plays a non premium defensive position.
2001morecowbell2001
Umm Dominguez “hasn’t produced anything as a professional thus far” because he is 18 goddamn years old. I can’t even…
Yankee Clipper
Johnny: You’re right, Dominguez’ first and only professional season was not the MVP year many wanted, but he has five-tool player potential. He’s way too young to make any judgment call on his production, or lack thereof. If he’s still performing this way at 21, you could very well have a point.
I saw him play. He’s constantly adjusting, working on mechanics, consistency. He’s not simply trying to achieve the best numbers he can now; rather, he’s trying to maximize his training/adjustments to prepare for the future.
JohhnyBets67
This is in comparison to Volpe, Ace.
No need to get blown out of proportion. Volpe is a better prospect today. That’s the opinion of many more qualified than I
❤️ MuteButton
I can’t think of too many teams that wouldn’t be interested in him, so…
The Baseball Fan
Marlins want to contend while still keeping their young pitching in tact. They do not want to burn through their farm system but still hope to get big names. They must find a happy medium, I think a JJ Bleday and Jesus Sanchez gets it done for Marte. As for the Diamondbacks, they are wanting to contend in a few years so this deal would probably be appealing to them too.
Mjm117
More like Eliezer, Braxton and Burdick get it done.
ludafish
I love me some Burdick… I rather trade Bleday at this point. But there is no way AZ doesn’t ask for one of Sixto, Cabrera, Meyer or Rogers for Marte.
If some magical insanity happened and they could give up Eliesier, Garret, Neidert and maybe Eder I would be up for it. If Eder recovers from TJ well he is going to be legit. I would throw in Luzardo happily as well but his stock dropped.
Since minor leaguers are just lottery tickets I imagine the Marlins 100% trade Eliesier, Burdick and Garret for Marte. It’s just not enough. I’m also that person that doesn’t want Meyer going anywhere. Unless maybe it’s Meyer for Marte straight up (or a throw in like a Jerar or something).
Long story short is I see us lining up well with Arizona on a Ketel deal, I just hate to see what we give up and can Ketel play a whole season in CF and provide the offense needed?
frankpr21
This is how bad is Jeter and Co. when it come to trades. Stanton, nothing to show for. Yelich nothing to show for. Yes they probably will do another stupid trade.. It will be crazy. to give more than Braxton, Eliezer for Marte. He is not a legit centerfielder and his average is higher because where he plays. Marlins have already gave away some good talent away for a not hit, good defense catcher and a utility player in Wendel .who by the way is already a Berti copy. The way these marlins executive give away talent is just horrendously crazy. Last year they had Duval, Marte and couple of good relievers and end up 20 games away. These 3 new acquisitions do not make this Team better than the 2021 edition. I thing it was a very foolish trade with Tampa. Giving away Mizner for Wendel. . Mizner is going to be a monsters.. Anyway they will be better off signing Rosario for left field at least he can hit and make and impression on the lineup. No Duval, no Starling, they are not better. The saddest part of all this, the wasting of so much pitching talent.. right now they are not better than the Braves or Mets. They can compete with Phillies and Nats, so not good enough. They are fooling themselves it they thing they are better than Mets and Braves.
ludafish
Misner is 24 and still hasn’t put together more than 3 weeks of good play. He won’t be ready for the majors till he is 26. He will probably have a good year or two and that’s it. Wendle can play so many positions and at an above average level. The team has soured on Misner and loves Burdick. They also won’t give up on Bleday. I’m ok with getting rid of Misner.
If ARI would take Garret and Eliesier for Marte I would do it in a heartbeat. But they will want more. They will want Meyer at least. If we could give them Garret, Eliesier and Neidert again I would do it ASAP.
If they give up such a good package it would definitely be for a true CF and maybe not Marte.
The trade for Stallings was great. A back of the rotation starter coming off of several minor league seasons with an ERA over 5 and two fringe prospects with some potential. Now we have a gold glove leader behind the plate to work with our insanely talented pitching staff.
The Marlins are definitely better and still haven’t given up any true pieces that they love. And again if they can get Marte for Eliesier, Garret, Neidert and some other mid fringe prospect I would do a backflip of joy. But Arizona will want way more. Way way way more.
Talking about who they had last year… Starling missed a bunch of time and came back with no power and as a leadoff hitter. Duvall is a 3 true outcome player who can go weeks with doing nothing. An OF of J Sanchez, BDLC, and Asvail Garcia is already a massive improvement from last year. If they can find a true CF even better. I would love to add one more veteran bat and bullpen arm. Otherwise they have a team ready to make noise. They have seven starters with TOR stuff to try for five spots (maybe six) and then 2-3 guys with mid rotation stuff waiting. And now they have a boss catcher to throw to (unlike last season with Alfaro and his 30 passed balls and bad framing and not knowing how to call a game) .
Sorry to break it to you that Ng and Jeter made this team MUCH better than last season.
highheat
Is that Elieser Hernandez, Braxton Garrett, Nick Neidert, and a fringe prospect that you’re suggesting as a package for Marte? Just trying to be sure that I’m following, because that’s: a 40 FV (with 3 years of control left), a 40 FV, a 40+ FV, and another fringe prospect for 3 years of Marte. And all of the listed players are already on the 40-man. I’m sorry, but that’s a laughably bad offer.
One year of Goldschmidt brought in: Weaver (50 FV with 5 years of control), Kelly (50 FV with 6 years of control), Young (40 FV and not on the 40-man), and a Competitive Balance Pick. I know they were already listed in the article, but I included the quality and the context of the prospects because Weaver and Kelly had already graduated from top 100 eligibility by the time of the trade. If I’m not mistaken, Goldschmidt was also older and making more than Marte would be this season while only playing 1B.
Any team that wants to try to “buy low” on him coming off of an injury shortened season is likely going to have to pay a large price anyway and more than likely will have to overpay, because Marte doesn’t have to be traded (almost all of his offensive peripherals were comparable to 2019, so the production was still there in spite of everything).
A deal likely starts at two top 100 prospects including one near the 25 range, and possibly even 3 if a top 25 isn’t included (especially if theres no desire to subtract from the MLB roster). Cost controlled players in their prime, capable of fielding CF/MIF, and capable of hitting for both contact and power are not exactly common.
iverbure
Ummm Marlins have plenty to show for Stanton. Not having to pay that contract is a addition by subtraction.
How come you didn’t bring up Ozuna?
hyraxwithaflamethrower
D’backs should be targeting guys at least a year away from the majors, maybe 2-3 years with ridiculous upside. If they’re going to go headlong into a rebuild, he’s easily their best trade chip. As for whether they’ll deal him, they have zero reason not to. He will be an FA long before they’re ready to contend. My guess is they were waiting on where Semien and Baez signed and were then going to field offers from the teams that missed out on them but didn’t have time to get something done. They could also be waiting to see if there are any penalties for tanking in the new CBA.
Spare Tire Dixon
Braves should throw down Pache, Langeliers, Muller/Davidson to get Marte.
RunDMC
Absolutely no Langeliers. They have Carson Kelly, who I’d think they’d ride or die with right now, maybe Contreras would be a better fit, allowing both to mature possibly with the DH. (Having 2 free-swinging offensive catchers would be a secret weapon with the DH).
Would be interesting to see Touki back to AZ (after we acquired basically for 9M of salary relief). He needs a change of scenery. Wouldn’t sub for Muller/Davidson.
frankpr21
Ha, ha, they are not as dummy as the Marlins a team that give away talent and nothing to show for. Stanton, nothing to show for. Yelich nothing a mean zip to show for, they just release Brinson and Duval he just won the WS in Atlanta. Jeter and Co are bad traders. Bad to the core.
stymeedone
You know you already said this.
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Frank why would they have gotten anything for Stanton? He’s a negative asset. They did well on the Ozuna trade.
PadreFan19
They’d have to give up their whole farm to get Ketel.
1fifth2fifthRed5thBlue5th
Not really,
Marlins clearly feel ready to complete. Marte is under team control for 3 years 30 mill and the Marlins would have the option to QO him for a 4th year or get draft pick at end of the first round, if thats still a thing.
Offer up Khalil Watson, JJ Bleday, Nick Neidert.
ludafish
I know it’s very early and many times that early hype amounts to nothing … But Whatson was considered the steal of the draft. I imagine the Marlins want to see what he can do in the next two years in the minors before shipping him off so fast.
hiflew
So? The point of MLB is not to have a great farm; it is to use your farm to build a great MLB team. Whether it through promotion or using prospects as currency in deals. THAT is what people forget. Farms are just a means to and end, not the end.
ludafish
I’m all about trading farm pieces. I am ok with letting go of Misner since the team likes Burdick. But Khalil was the steal of the draft and scouts thing he has potential to be an all star caliber big league for years. So my point is not him. Right now Burdick and Whatson are my untouchable position players. I really don’t want to see Meyer go but as days go on I see it. I rather see if a team would take Luzardo and Neidert instead of Meyer. But that’s me. We still have plenty of minor league talent very close to MLB ready to make moves.
I’m ok with trading anyone for the right thing . But to revisit the Meyer For Marsh trade I say no. I want proven players. Meyer will be legit. Just you watch
iverbure
Hiflew hasn’t watched mlb recently. In the last decade teams with the number one farm include Astros, Cubs, braves, rays, Redsox and dodgers. There’s a direct correlation between having the number one farm and winning or going to the World Series a short time afterwards.
seamaholic 2
Now THAT’S a good fit and that deal needs to happen. It will hurt for Miami but they need to give up some pitching depth for a dude that good. If they can bring in Ketel they’re a serious playoff contender.
LebronHatesAsians
Might as well make the push for a player like this that really doesn’t have any holes in his game. Can’t keep all your chips so gotta cash them in for something. This would be a pretty good something.
Metsin777
I wouldn’t be surprised if i see that miami marlins copy and paster in the comments. Whenever a fa gets signed I scroll all the way to the bottom of the mlbtr post to find it. Its never failed me yet
stretch123
I’d offer Meyer and Jesus Sanchez or Bleday and see if they bite. Wouldn’t give up more than that for Marte tbh.
frankpr21
Ha, ha, they are not as dummy as the Marlins a team that give talent away. See previous bad trades, Stanton, nothing to show for. Yelich nothing a mean zip to show for, they just release Brinson and Duval he just won the WS in Atlanta. Jeter and Co are bad traders. Bad to the core.

Do you mean Pablo Lopez?

I assume so.

Toronto would be able to do so. Kirk is a C with high upside as well as is Moreno, They also got Pearson, Groshans, Jimenez and plenty of more appealing options for a team that is in a rebuild mode !
I’ll say Kirk, Pearson, Groshans, Palacios, Martinez, Smith and Hernández for Marte and Bumgarner should do the trick !
Richard Head
I think that’s way too much to give up. If they take on the MadBum contract they wouldn’t have to give up as much either.
TennVol
That’s up there for dumbest trade proposals I have seen. Hernandez by himself is better than Marte. Comparable defense and Hernandez is better offensive. Shown with 2 silver slugger awards the last 2 years.
frankpr21
Agree. 100%
highheat
Not saying Hernandez is a bad player, but the only rate stats on his FG page in which he was superior to Marte last season were: ISO (by .012), Barrel% (which only factors batted ball events; so not impacted negatively by Ks), EV (by 0.7 MPH), and xSLG (which suggests Hernandez may have been a little unlucky in the power department and Marte may have been a little lucky).
Both players had the exact same BABIP, but Marte’s contact/plate discipline numbers were so much better than Hernandez’s that Marte put up better overall offensive production. That includes OPS, OPS+, wRC+, wOBA, and xwOBA.
If we’re talking baserunning, Hernandez supplied more BSR but most of that value came from not hitting into double plays. If we’re talking defense, Hernandez was better by essentially every defensive metric but almost all of Hernandez’s positive value came from his arm. We’re also comparing CF (a harder position to play) to RF; “Natural Outfielder Better Defender Than Convert” isn’t exactly breaking news.
The biggest caveat in all this is that Marte played in ~50 less games than Hernandez due to injuries (which is why we’re using rate stats). There’s the argument that Hernandez has durability in his favor so any projections for Marte should be tempered with that expectation, which is a very valid argument.
However, the Steamer projections (which I don’t know if they are pre-’21 or not; I apologize) have Marte as more than twice as valuable in slightly less play time.
Add that to the fact that Marte is a year younger, also plays IF, has cost certainty at a team friendly rate, and finished top 5 in MVP voting in his last full season (ironically the first season he had played CF in 4 years); I think every team would choose Marte between the two, including the Blue Jays.
Sorry for the wall of text, but saying that Hernandez is better than Marte is blasphemy and I will not sit idly by lol. I do agree with the sentiment that that package is outlandish (although I’d be happy if the DBacks found a team dumb enough to give that much up).
Richard Head

A trade for Marte and a Schwarber signing makes their lineup legit with a deep pitching staff behind them. Me thinks the Marlins are going to make a push to try and take the NL East.
StupendousYappi
The Marlins should have never been allowed into the league. The expansion into Miami has been a massive failure that cost tax payers millions of dollars. Would be nice if they just cut their losses and retracted the Marlins or sent them to Mexico City.
Habeto
And yet, they’ve won TWO World Series.
scottaz
I have an interest in having someone hand me a million dollars in cash! Does anybody think I will get it? Same answer to Miami wanting Marte.
To all the Yankee fans here offering a bag of peanuts, i.e. Volpe, Rodriguez, Bleday, Burdick, Sixto, Meyer, Cabrera AND Rogers for Marte…same answer.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Apparently, any old Marte will do for the Marlins.
Rsox
The thing is, the Marlins are heavy in OF prospects. 8 of their top 30 prospects are Outfielders and it doesn’t include graduated prospects Sanchez/Harrison/De La Cruz or Victor Victor Mesa. Trading for Marte to play the OF, which he doesn’t like doing is silly unless you trade Chisholm or Rojas to clear 2B (Chisholm would play SS if Rojas were traded)
ludafish
The team seems to think (or thought when acquired) Jazz was the SS of the future. He still could be, but he was either second in errors or tied in errors with Baez. He definitely needs work. He can make some amazing plays and then he boots the simplest ball.
In a perfect world I would love Jazz/Marte up the middle. But right now that isn’t for the best. I would love to get Ketel and let him focus on CF but I imagine AZ would want Meyer and Bleday to start and who knows what else. I wouldn’t do that… I would just keep trying to get Burdick ready. He has the tools and makeup to be a quality CF. I’m not saying he’s going to be a top 5 guy but the team will be happy to have him.
scottaz
Jazz is long gone and Dbacks are very happy with what they got in return—Zack Gallon. And Geraldo Perdomo is the SS of the (very near) future.
frankpr21
Agree.. Keep the talent go out and get Rosario. Let De La Cruz and Berti and Bleday compete.. Do not waste talent expecting a difference maker on Marte. The real Marte end up with the Mets. they are not better than the Mets or Braves right now.. Adding someone like Kyle Schwarzer that is a difference maker. They want to compete with Braves and Mets then be real, get a real difference maker. .
scottaz
As Rosenthal plainly puts it, the D’backs “would need a monster package to move Marte.”
What would a “monster package” look like?
1. The Yankees don’t have anything resembling a monster package to offer. They’re out.
2. Marlins: their closer, 2 of their top 8 starting pitchers, their 3b and a couple of prospects. If you were the Marlins GM would you do that trade? I wouldn’t. But that’s the Dbacks definition of a monster package.
3. For any other team: if you don’t have major league or near major league ready players at all 3 of those positions (closer, starting pitchers and 3b), then you are just like the Yankees, you don’t have the ingredients for a “monster package” as defined by the Dbacks.
Mjm117
“But that’s the Dbacks definition of a monster package “

I’m thinking John Holmes, and Vlad the Implaer as a “monster package” for Ketel.
ChiSoxCity
Still nothing on the White Sox.
Seems the organization thinks the team is better than it actually is (93 wins in the worst division in baseball).
If they don’t improve the roster (2B, RF, SP) this offseason, the Madrigal trade will officially be an unmitigated disaster.
Detroit will close the gap next season and the window will officially close. Expect a sell off in 2023, and crickets at “G-Rate” field. smh
dazedatnoon
What would White Sox part with……?
Vaughn, Kopech, and Crochet are likely the starting points for discussion but would a package with Kelley headlining work instead?
Kelley, Burger, Rodriguez, and Thompson
ChiSoxCity
Kopech and Crochet are elite starting pitchers once they matured physically. There’s no way you trade that for a 2B. Vaughn is an elite 1B/LF, and possibly their starting RF. You can’t keep trading away top guys for pieces that don’t fit. SPEND THE DAMN MONEY.
ChiSoxCity
FWIW, I would offer some combination of Kimbrel, Sheets, Collins, Bummer and their top 3 prospects for Martel. If that doesn’t get it done, move on. There are FA infielders who can get you a WS championship left on the table, but you have to be willing to spend the money. YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, JERRY.
scottaz
MLBTR made it clear that they would be running articles like this Marlins/Marte trash article, because their stock and trade is in legitimate rumors, trade speculation and free agent musings. They can’t do any of that right now during the lock out. So don’t get all hyped up about anything you read here right now. Just take it as rehash of never-were old headlines in order to have something to tantalize MLBTR junkies. This Marte thing will never happen. Calm down.
Appalachian_Outlaw
No worries, I am calm. Whenever I see the term “monster package” in exchange for a guy who’s only had one year worthy of such I just chuckle. I’d offer you a good AAA SP and that’s it. You want it, great… and if not? ::shrug::
scottaz
Appalachia. I think that’s the right attitude regarding the information in this article … shrug.
frankpr21
I hope so for the sake of the Marlins fans. But Jeter and Co have proven to give away talent for nothing in return. Exhibit 1, Statnton,, Yelich, etc.
MetsFan22
Marlins have no shot of doing anything this year. Don’t give up prospctecs to rush…
ludafish
You always say this. They absolutely have a shot. It’s just not a sure thing or close to one. But if four of Alcantara, Lopez, Rogers, Sanchez, Cabrera, Luzardo or Meyer stick around most of the year and can throw 150 decent innings, they get their bullpen in line (there are some good arms there) and the offense does just enough they could win a wild card. Then would you want to face their starters in the playoffs?
Trust me I’m a massive Marlins fan and I wouldn’t bet on these things happening. There’s a 20% chance at something like that at best. But to say it’s hopeless and can’t happen is ridiculous. They have the possibility to throw out the most talented five man in the game. It’s just a matter of keeping them in the field. And if they add one more decent bat and reliable pen arm then they could really get somewhere. The 22 Marlins are going to be a lot better than the 21 team at least (although it’s not that hard to do)
frankpr21
Like your thinking.. Keep the talent wait some more if necessary. But I thing they can be very good if they go out and get someone like Schwarzer or Rosario and let De La Cruz, and JJ Bleday compete for centerfield.
MarlinsFanBase
If MLB expands the playoffs to 7 teams per league, the Marlins have a shot.
And as @ludafish said – another bat and a reliable reliever gets them to be much better. They lost a ton of games just by the bullpen last year – blown leads in the last couple of innings.
MetsFan22
I agree with expanded playoffs. Marlins aren’t a bad team. If they do end of in 3rd or 4th they could be the best 4th place team in baseball.
MetsFan22
Marlins have a shot but it would be hard. It’s cheaper if marlins wait one more year for marte
mrperkins
I wouldn’t call Andrew Young an actual “notable” prospect from the Goldschmidt deal. 26rd pick that was always old for his competition going to be 28 next year. More like AA/AAA filler.

Yankees don’t seem to make trades unless the other team is paying the entirety of the contract of the player going to the Yankees so i doubt even if they were willing to part with the prospects the D’backs say “no” because Hazen isn’t dumb enough to pay Marte to play in New York
GETBUCKETS
Yea I bet they are and almost every other club in baseball.
NostraThomas
As much as here in New York it’s a favorite pastime to dump on Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner, this is not the time. The lockout means that maybe we can address the deficiency in scouting and development, coaching and accountability.
Ketel is a nice player. He’s not really an answer, and since we were kicking the tires last year on him, it’s become a referendum on the NYY farm system? That doesn’t seem fair.
I get it. There have been guys that didn’t pan out for whatever reason. Name me a club where they all do. As disappointed as we in Yankee land were in CF this year, I can’t break my neck to hope to trade for someone that isn’t good at it defensively. His appeal is cost control, not upside.
If that’s a direction Miami wants to go, I can understand. AZ has not really been competitive in a bit, and that’s not changing anytime soon. So, load up the farm and hope for better days. Miami has a wealth of pitching talent with, until recently, not much offense or great defense. Can they make a run? Sure, why not? Is he the missing piece? Eh…
