Corey Seager’s 10-year, $325MM deal with the Rangers prior to the MLB lockout shocked baseball — both because it was the Rangers winning the bidding and because Texas had already signed Marcus Semien for a surprising seven years and $175MM. As one would expect with any bidding war that reaches a decade and more than $300MM, Texas had some competition as they sought to lure Seager to Arlington. However, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports this morning that a perhaps-unexpected suitor was one of the primary competitors in that Seager market: the Blue Jays.
The Dodgers also had strong interest in re-signing Seager, per Passan, though that much was largely known to this point. Toronto’s involvement in the process, however, is a newer revelation. The Jays were known to be attempting to re-sign Semien, but Seager’s contract was in an entirely different financial stratosphere. Ultimately, Toronto simply wasn’t willing to match Texas’ 10-year, $325MM terms, but Passan suggests that the team was “very much” in on Seager prior to his deal with Texas.
That’s of some anecdotal note and makes for a fine “what-if” moment for Jays fans down the line, but it’s also informative of the team’s current mindset and simultaneously instructive of how the Jays will be able to operate post-transaction freeze. The Blue Jays have just shy of $97MM committed to the septet of George Springer, Kevin Gausman, Hyun Jin Ryu, Jose Berrios, Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Yimi Garcia. Add in a steep arbitration class headlined by burgeoning star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and the Jays have another $31MM or so in projected payroll, according to MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz.
That brings the Jays to nearly $128MM in 2022 projections — plus another nine pre-arbitration salaries (generally in the vicinity of the league minimum). For a team that opened the 2021 season with about $135MM in guaranteed salary and has previously pushed payroll to $163MM, it’s not really a shock to see that there’s more room in the 2022 budget. However, signing Seager would’ve been about far more than 2022 dollars.
For Toronto, signing Seager would’ve meant had four sizable, fully guaranteed contracts on the books as far out into the future as 2026, when Springer, Gausman and Berrios are all still under contract. (Berrios is signed through 2028, though his contract contains an opt-out after that ’26 campaign.) Any Seager signing would’ve figured to include a salary north of $30MM being added onto that 2026 ledger, meaning the Jays were essentially comfortable with the idea of committing $93MM or more to four players in 2026 — about a half-decade in advance.
With Toronto also surely keen on extending both Guerrero and Bo Bichette at some point, any serious level of interest in Seager is all the more notable. The 2026 season is the first would-be free-agent year for both Guerrero and Bichette, so throwing a Seager contract onto the pile indicates a willingness to spend well above nine figures on 2026 payroll if there’s to be any hope of realistically extending either young star.
It’s all an exercise in hindsight, to an extent, as Seager is of course set to spend the next decade as a Ranger. But the Jays’ apparent willingness to jump into the Seager market also provides some useful context when looking at how they’ll operate once transactions resume under a new collective bargaining agreement.
Perhaps Toronto simply viewed Seager as an exception and was comfortable spending that type of money singularly on Seager and Seager alone. However, the market has several high-end free agents who remain unsigned and will be in position to command sizable long-term deals. Carlos Correa could well land a deal in the same range as Seager commanded. Trevor Story figures to be eyeing a nine-figure commitment, perhaps over a shorter term that caps off around that same 2026 point the Jays’ current commitments come to an end. The Jays have already been tied to star NPB outfielder Seiya Suzuki, and the outfield market also includes higher-profile names like Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber.
Toronto certainly isn’t under any obligation to tack another nine-figure deal onto the books, but the mere fact that they were a player of any real note in the Seager bidding shows that they can’t be squarely ruled out from doing so. Another major free-agent expenditure would make for enormous major payrolls down the road when Guerrero and Bichette are in their final couple years of arbitration (and/or into the free-agent portions of theoretical extensions), but the Jays are committed to winning right now. Even with three long-term deals on the books and a pair of high-profile young stars they’ll hope to extend, we shouldn’t assume Toronto will shy away from another major long-term deal.
justacubsfan
How much of this is legitimate vs drumming up the fanbase (let’s say in the event they don’t sign any other big contracts)? Don’t get me wrong, I am sure the Blue Jays discussed things, but I doubt they were significant players considering infield is not really their biggest need right now.
MagRupe
I imagine they would have wanted him to move to 3rd base which is an area of need (somewhat). And for $300million+ (and no Texas) I assume he would have done it.
seamaholic 2
Seager has said repeatedly he does not want to move off SS. If the Blue Jays were telling him he’d have to move to come to Toronto, they’d have to beat the Rangers offer by a huge margin to even have a chance.
Best Screenname Ever
They would have to pay him a lot more anyway because of the huge tax difference.
TalkSomeSense
9.16% tax difference on half his salary ,not a massive amount that you seem to think.
Best Screenname Ever
Well, first of all that’s $15MM. over the contract. Perhaps not much to you big spenders, but a lot of money to real people like Seager and the rest of us. But it’s way more than that anyway. On the first $10MM of salary alone, it’s over $2MM a year due to the low marginal thresholds in Canada, the higher marginal rates (Texas has no state income tax at all), and the lack of deductibility. The differential will lower on amounts over $10MM a year, but still exist. I would estimate the difference at about $40MM+ over the life of the contract.
And that’s income tax alone. Consumption taxes in Canada are absurd.
TalkSomeSense
You totally neglected the part that players on pay taxes on the games they play in Toronto- ” consumption taxes? ” Yea Ok – Not like a player making 30m a year is going to worry about paying 15-20 k extra in GST while actually in TO.
Actually the highest rates kick in at 220k vs 660k so basically if a player makes a tad over league min they will be taxed at the highest rate in both countries.
Seriously guy you have no idea what you are talking about.
Best Screenname Ever
You read exactly like someone who knows everything that he’s Googled in the last 5 minutes. We read Canadians on here all the time, who google the marginal tax rate and think that Canada isn’t the tax sinkhole that it is, because the federal marginal tax rates are a similar percentage. But you don’t seem to understand how marginal tax rates even work. They’re applied to the income over the marginal threshold, not the whole amount as you appear to think..
In Texas, there is no state tax. That means that the highest marginal tax rate is the fed 37% In Canada, the highest marginal rate includes state (provincial) tax everywhere and goes up to 54%. That of course is a difference of 17%, not the 9% you appear to have picked out of your shorts.
You’ve acknowledged now that there is a difference in when the marginal rates apply and that they apply much lower in Canada, although you’ve pretended the Canada currency is the same as US, which we know it’s not.
You haven’t addressed at all the difference in taxables. In Canada, the governments fleece every cent twice. Even your mortgage interest payments are taxed as income. As are your municipal tax payments, If your government gave better charitable donation deductions, maybe there wouldn’t be the huge difference in charitable donations that there is. Maybe Canadians would start reaching into their own pockets.
The reason there is no estate tax in Canada is that what’s left in an estate has already been taxed to the hilt. After the high income taxes, people have to pay municipal taxes in after tax dollars, and then pay 15% sales tax on virtually everything they buy. You may not think that ballplayers mind getting fleeced for more tax every time they buy something, but they do. Before David Wells came to the Sox, he wrote a book for which he got fined by MLB because it talked about how much he hated Canada – the taxes, the fans, everything. One of the things he talks about is how players hate being gouged by the government every time you buy anything. I respect him for saying the truth and paying the fine, rather than trying to pretend that players like Canada.
You”re right that American players resident in the US need only pay income tax on the percentage of games they play in Canada, but that’s 50% of a large difference. It’s certainly not the only reason that none of the American players on the Blue Jays live in Canada, but it’s one of them. If they lived there they’d be in for the full tax soak.
Dustyslambchops23
Why do you care about this so much?
TalkSomeSense
You just prove your ignorance thinking that Canada is one big province with the same marginal tax rate across each province. What is 13.16 + 33? That is Ontario. You seem to think that the marginal rates have a huge impact on athletes making 30m a year. Seriously give up. The fact the highest tax rates are applied at 220 k in Canada and 630k in the US do you think the tax on 400k really makes that much difference to a guy making 32.5m ?
Stop trying to dig yourself out of the ignorance hole .
You obviously think you know more then you actually do- give it a rest .
If the extent of your knowledge is a book by David Wells written 25 years ago you truly are clueless.

I just went and calculated the difference between the Cdn and US take on the marginal tax rates . ( With the Cdn top bracket kicking in at 220 k vs in the US it is 630k. )
Considering that the TAX is only paid in those regions for half the games.
Want to know what the difference is? A whopping 31k per annum. ( Add that to my original number ) Plus allow for GST of 69k per year = an additional 100k in tax. Over and above my original calculations based on 9.16 % /2 .
Now 100k might seem like a lot to the avg Joe but to a guy making 32.5m per year? Serously- this is what you are basing your argument on? What a joke.
If you need any help with the math let me know.
Do some real research next time rather then assumptions .

My sister in law lived in buda in 2011 outside austin. I live i the SF Bay Area, my mortgage was double hers but thanks to prop 13 her property taxes on the same size house was 4x mine. I love Texas but the property taxes are nuts.
Altuves Buzzer
This point is so inaccurately father by MLB fans
Canadian tax rates are comparable to California and New York for starters
But the players income is taxed, literally based on where they play, for instance the Jays have spring training in Florida, so from the point that the salary starts taking in preseason all of that time is taxed at Florida’s income tax rate, one of the lowest frankly anywhere, then when the Jays play in Boston the player salary is taxed in Massachusetts when they play in Minnesota tax based on Minnesota, they’re only tax the Canadian tax rates for their home games.
Many players don’t buy homes in Toronto, instead buying homes in Florida, based on the area and now the jays have a world class spring training facility, so that’s another huge thing to think of, players are getting furnished condos in the downtown core where (the rent thru the team so no real estate fees for selling a hole of their traded) they get to walk to work, aren’t hassled, and especially for players of a non-white background they are very welcomed. Hate to sound like a homer but really tired of hearing that point thrown out in simplicity as though it’s gospel.
TalkSomeSense
Altuve
I actually laid out the difference in taxes but only a few who are obtuse , ignorant and/or dogmatic still think otherwise. Even for a non tax state because of the lower federal rate at the top rate ( which 98% of a 32.5m AAV contract is ) means there is less then a 5% difference.
Allowing for 100k per year additional for GST on spending the player does in Canada plus the difference in level the top rates kick in – 1 m over the 10 yrs of the contract. Leaves us with the Jays needing to pay 325mx 5% + 1m = 17.25m more to have the same take home pay or 1.725m a year as the Rangers gave Seager.
This doesn’t factor in the higher property taxes in Texas, or none monetary issues .
AvidAstrosFan
That’s ludicrous your property taxes aren’t going to be higher than your mortgage unless someone gave you a house. I’m a Texas resident and this is one of the best cost of living states in the country. Your home prices compared to most of the country is economical.

Bichette is terrible at SS. He wont play there much longer if he doesn’t improve
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
I’d hardly say terrible. He has had a positive DRS every year. He has been better than Seager anyways.
Astros2017&22Champs
Im no hater of analytics. DRS. UZR. Useful stats that paint a picture. But im also old school. 24 errors is slam dunk pathetic.
deweybelongsinthehall
Let me ask a question:. Based on age, production, health history and ability to play the field, would more prefer Seager or Bogaerts? I’m wondering what the Seager long term affect will be.
Astros2017&22Champs
Bogaerts has been playing on a team friendly contract. Both are hit first players. Seager is probably more talented but always hurt
Astros2017&22Champs
Fangraphs had bichette pegged at 2 DRS this year. His UZR was -5.2. 24 errors. Hes a terrible defender man
TheBoatmen
Those were just the ones counted as errors. He through a lot where Vladdy was having to wildly jump. A lot of his throws were airmailed. Bo has the arm, just no control. I can’t see that improving at 3B though.
Joeypower
I take bichette over seager any day!
bigdaddyt
First full year playing position in MLB, first and second half Bo on defence was night and day. He started off the season looking absolutely lost but ended looking like a confident player every play and media stopped talking about moving him to 2nd long term. Lots of that had to do with development of Vlad at 1st being able to make plays he couldn’t earlier but Bo deserves just as much of not more credit for his development at SS
Dustyslambchops23
Agreed it was night and day
jimmertee
Agreed Astros. Bichette can look like a defensive star one moment and a dog on the next play, especially when the pressure is greatest. His max effort throws to first won’t last long either.
He belongs at 2nd base and will eventually be moved there as he ages and his violent swing takes a toll on injuries.
Wait for it.
bucsfan0004
Bichette was greatly improved at SS compared to how bad he was at the beginning of the year. He turned into a pretty good SS. When you quote some stat you don’t understand, realize that it is a cumulative stat for the whole year. Of course a player is going to have more errors when they play 160 games.
rocky7

@astros2017
We get it. Bichette sucks at defense
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
I didn’t realize the Jays payroll was so low relative to the rest of the league. I know it’s high by their standards but that is a good team for the money they spend. They are smart to really try and go all in while Bichette and Vlad are still cheap. It might hurt later if they have to let those guys walk but now is a definite window for them. The Jays were too good a team to miss the playoffs last year. I think their roster is better than the Yankees or Red Sox. Adding Correa would be a good move. Maybe Bichette can move to 3rd for him. How is Bo’s defense? He would have to play second fiddle to Correa, right?
dsett75
Hammer, they just had a big debate about Bichette’s defense right before your comment. The gist of it was that he was super bad early in the season, but improved as the season went on. And no, it doesn’t compare to Correa. They say Bichette will have to move to 2B, not 3B, because of his arm strength and 24 errors on throwing mostly.
motor
I’ll agree with this as that’s certainly been the case with this front office in the past(and maybe even to a certain extent this year). I’m still hopeful that Atkins will pull the trigger on rounding out this squad this offseason though.
The Gausman deal doesn’t necessarily prove they’re ready to spend imo. They needed multiple arms regardless this off-season so they were always going to have to pay (especially with their current roster construction) for at least one quality arm
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Does this mean the Yankees who everyone predicted would land Corey Seager didn’t even make a competitive bid? George Steinbrenner would be ashamed of his son.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@FredMcGriff for the HOF-He definitely would be, since Seager was so needed. George never passed on needs regardless of the price. It definitely got him in to trouble sometimes though. Lol
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@yankee. I figured this was the one free agent the Yankees would get. Correa doesn’t seem like a fit since he’d probably be booed 24/7 because of the whole cheating scandal. Gleyber to 2nd then a platoon of DJLM and Gio Urshela at 3rd looks like Voit at 1st barring a trade or free agent signing.
sfes
George Steinbrenner is rolling in his grave. No way he would have let Seager and Scherzer/Verlander get away. And Scherzer to the Mets no doubt!
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@FredMcGriff for the HOF- without a doubt, Seager would have fit to a tee with the Yankees. I don’t want Correa here. Trevor Story makes some sense for a 5 year deal, maybe at $23 million annually. DJ supposedly will play everyday at different positions. I feel like Rizzo will be re-signed for 2 years. If no Rizzo keep an eye on Kyle Schwarbar. His power at Yankee Stadium would be sick.
casorgreener
“Boost” should be Boo
sfes
Not all of them are saying it but enough to sound ridiculous. They sure hated A-Rod, Johnny Damon and Roger Clemens. If they sign him, soon as he hits his first homer they’ll be spewing that “true Yankee” crap
Rsox
If the Yankees weren’t willing to spend on Seager they arent going to be willing to spend on Correa. Yankees are either going to sign Simmons or role with Urshela/Jose Peraza until either Volpe or Oswaldo Peraza are ready during the season
ChrisEnvy76
They don’t boo Aroldis Chapman and his pulling a gun on his girlfriend and shooting it in his house a bunch of times, but cheating on hitting a baseball is where they draw the line?
Perksy
They could still swoop in sign Verlander. Technically still a free agent.

Kyle Seager fits the Jay’s needs more than Corey Seager does.
to4
Yes it’s is ! Assuming Biggio moves to 2B, his natural position, The Jays need a 3B. They can also use an OF that can handle the field and DH Teoscar or at least, make him the primary DH and rotate all of Lourdes Jr., Vlad Jr., Springer, Teoscar, the new OF’er and even Bryant if he’s ultimately signed by the Jays !
Rsox
They have Grichuck who can play RF while Hernandez DH’s. Kyle Seager or Mike Moustakas would be the best bets for 3B as they solve both the positional need and the need for another lefty hitter.
WillDS
You clearly don’t understand this team at all. Infield and a lefty bat is exactly what the team needs on the position player side.
BuJoBi
Have to agree. Committing 96 million to 4 players when we need to re-sign vlad and bo would have to much money.
Although seager solves a huge problem for the jays that seems to be forgotten by some. We desperately need a LH bat in the middle of the lineup. Just placing Dickerson in the lineup last season made us more dynamic. Instead of using cash to buy players we should be using our stock of prospects to fill voids on the team since we have a strong group of young core players on the team already. Save some money for keeping what we have

If you leave the Dodgers, there’s like a 70% chance your next team will be the Blue Jays, Marlins, or Rangers. For whatever reason, many recent former Dodgers end up on these teams.
LordD99
At least they didn’t pay a 10/342.
The Blue Jays need to build in salary growth for their young players, but there’s no excuse for them not to be planning for a payroll up toward the luxury tax threshold, and selectively beyond.
neo
The Jays were in on this free agent now happening retroactively due to the speed of the market.
In other news, the Jays are interested in more free agents past and present. Probably future FA too. They would like to sign Vlad Guerrero the Third if he can get around to being born and then age eligible to sign a contract.
TheBoatmen
@neo I guess you haven’t seen Vladi Miguel his 15 year old brother. Has a sweet left handed swing.
dsett75
Seriously!! Did Vlad Guerrero name all his kids after himself like George Foreman did??
clrrogers
Not sure why anyone would refer to the Blue Jays a a “perhaps-unexpected suitor” for Seager. They have money to spend and a need for a left-handed bat whose capable of playing 3B. Seager checks both of those boxes and would have been a perfect fit for them. Not to mention the numerous articles in Toronto media discussing the team’s interest in him. This shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
seamaholic 2
And that would have been a huge mistake. Bo Bichette is already a better player than Corey Seager if you include availablity as a skill (4.9 fWAR vs 3.7 last year), and possibly even if you don’t, since Seager’s going to have to leave short soon (he’s already only borderline passable defensively and declining, while Bo’s getting better). Rangers are going to massively regret that deal with Seager. Not so much Semien, who has a shorter contract and will be fine while he’s in Texas (although it probably won’t lead to the team doing anything special). But Seager, man. That has ball-and-chain written all over it. The fact that the Dodgers went and got Trea Turner mid-season to play the same position this year and going forward tells you all you need to know. The Dodgers rarely get one of these wrong. Seager already gets hurt basically every year, and that’s only getting worse as he hits his 30’s.
amk1920
Seager is a far more proven player than Semien and 4 years younger. But sure, the 30 year old with 2 good seasons will be a better sign than Seager because his deal was for 3 less seasons.
Mystery Team
@amk1920 no he’s not go look for yourself. Semien is the better player. Seager’s numbers are okay for a guy making about $15 million a year but that contract is beyond horrible. I 100% agree with the ball and chain comparison. Texas will regret that deal.
Brew’88
Seager missed a lot of games so any WAR comparison is flawed. Defensively Bichette is a liability 24 errors. Offensively it’s close.
LordD99
Availability? We don’t really have anywhere enough data on Bichette heath wise. He was highly available in 2021, but missed nearly 2/3rds of games in the shortened 2020 season. Seager has had injury issues, but the two main ones (TJS and a broken hand after being hit by a pitch) are not indicative of future injuries.
I’m more comfortable with Seager’s bat being high end moving forward than Bichette’s. Both should eventually move off SS although more than playable there now.
The Blue Jays would be better with both Bichette and Seager on the team. They can afford both. Not saying they had to sign Seager but it wouldn’t be a huge mistake to add that level of talent.
sfes
It’s nuts considering the last time they signed a deal like this they had to dump it on the Yankees (A-Rod)
niched
I mostly agree but wouldn’t say the Dodgers rarely gave out bad contracts. Under previous regimes I know, but Kevin Brown, Andre Ethier, Jason Schmidt and Matt Kemp come to mind. And that trade for Carl Crawford, ouch. Also, as great as Mookie Betts is, that contract is insane, a major risk as a future albatross. But I agree with you that the Dodgers are a lot smarter over the past several years.

As long as Toronto stays away from Story. he has the same vibe as Tulo did….Overrated. Signing Story to a long term deal or any big bucks deal would be a mistake for Toronto.

IMO, Tulo carried the TO team. They won his first 13 starts with the Jays, and maybe 32-10 overall with the Jays. If I am not mistaken, didn’t he set some sort of consecutive errorless game streak with you guys?

Altuves Buzzer
People have to remember just how bad José Reyes was in 2015, the fact that he was suspended in 2016, and the Jays would’ve had to ride out the rest of his contract.
In retrospect, they gave up nothing, for a veteran shortstop who absolutely carried them into the playoffs breaking their streak.
And if you had the joy of going to any of the games down the stretch or in the playoffs that year the building shook with the tulo chant.
Problem was he got old fast…..which I can’t help but wonder how similar years 4-10 of Seaver’s deal will look to tulo in his 30’s

I bummed to read this. Seager to the Jays as a 3B (or possibly SS and pushing Bichette to 2B) was atop my offseason wishlist for the Jays.

Best Screenname Ever
The Blue Jays are owned by a puny (by USA standards) telecom called ‘Rogers’. It’s market cap wouldn’t make it to a C-List company in America but in Canada they think it’s the biggest company ever. Part of it of course is there’s not much in the way of private business in Canada at all, so they wildly exaggerate the significance of any private business they see. And because there isn’t much in the way of private business there isn’t much in the way of business knowledge. In Canada, they don’t have much private wealth because of the hjgh tax rates, so a company like Rogers has to be publicly-held. It’s owned partly by the founder’s family, but a lot by institutional investors. In Canada the big institutional investors are public employee pension funds and banks. So a lot of the Blue Jays fans think the company can just take the money from some pension fund and spend it on player salaries as though it was the owner’s own money.
So expect in the offseason to read Canadians complaining about why this minor company they think is a giant isn’t spending money that’s not its own on player salaries. Comes with the territory here and you take it with a grain of salt.
That’s not to say all Canadians of course, but usually when you read about how ‘rich’ they think the Blue Jays owners are and how they’re refusing to spend like the big wheels they’re not, you can understand the source.

this is really funny… A wall street investor… By the way you can make money on Canadian Telecoms , Telus, Rogers, Bell Canada. Try making money on AT&T or Verizon… You can also make money on Canadian banks, BMO and TD that have really expanded into the U.S. If you want to invest in pipelines try Enbridge (Canadian) , Oil and gas try Canadian Natural Resources.

1. Your description of the ownership structure is wrong. The family trust owes 97% of Class A shares.
2. The market cap of Rogers is 23 Billion. So, no. It’s not apple. But it is still significant. Canadian Shoplify is worth 187 Billion. RBC is 145 Billion.
3. It may not be big by US standards but by BASEBALL standards, they are one of the richest owners in the sport. Hal Steinbrenner is only worth 3 Billion

One of my early lessons is that you can make money anywhere. When I first started working in Manhattan, I grabbed a couple of hot dogs behind GCT. I watched the hot dog vendor, and the dude could not be selling any faster. Two dogs and a coke to 100 people easily.

Hate to burst your bubble Finkle but having 300b in assets under control is not the same as Net Worth.
The Net worth of the combined Dodgers owners is less then the Net Worth of the Rogers family.

You have to have a passion for winning Championships at the top to take that approach. That requires the honchos to care about winning more than the money.
You’re asking a business entity to act like George used to. Ed is not a sports guy, he’s a businessman.
tigerfan1968
forget this insanely rich ownership… Rogers is a public corp and I am a shareholder. I do not want them throwing away money. Springer should be a good lesson to all. An excellent player but players want teams to take all the injury risk… Guaranteed contracts for a decade, opt outs if they are not happy, no trade clauses. The NFL does not operate this way.
Rsox
It really doesn’t matter who the “richer” owner is. Each team spends how they choose and each team is subject to the same luxury tax penalties as everyone else. Also it doesn’t matter who spends more when the only one of the top 10 teams payroll went to the World Series and lost to the team with the 11th highest payroll
MagRupe
You’re a class B shareholder. You have zero say.
BSHH
That’s interesting news – especially for Story, whose term and AAV should turn out to be more palatable for Toronto indeed and whose injury concerns with regard to his arm would be alleviated if he played 2B. But if I were the Blue Jays GM, I would try to pry something from the Mets for taking the Cano contract and sign Bryant, who should be easier available – yet similarly productive – than Correa or Story.
Gruß,
BSHH
DonOsbourne
Can you expound on the idea of acquiring Cano? On the surface it doesn’t make much sense, but maybe you have a more nuanced plan.
GarryHarris
I think he means something the Mariners did when the Mets acquired Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano from the Mariners.
For example: TOR gets JD Davis, Tyler Megill and Cano while NYM get Cavan Biggio, Randal Grichuk and Trent Thornton.
The Mets are dumping off Davis and Cano but taking Grichuk to offset salary.
iverbure
Cano would just get released. He has such negative value that it doesn’t make sense for the Mets to attach assets just to get rid of him and that’s it he doesn’t have a no trade clause.
Rsox
And immediately after that trade the Blue Jays would be looking for a new GM
GarryHarris
Again, it’s not anything I think is fair, it’s just an example with names off the top of my head.
sfes
Cano is yours. I’d drive him to LaGuardia personally
Ma4170
If Cano is planning on sneaking PEDs again for one last go round, the Mets better hold on to him… might get a 2020 type year followed by a lifetime suspension

Vlad 2.0 will be a Halo when he becomes a FA. Book it!!!!
kodion
So …when that happens, your guys will be paying for his declining years?
User 2079935927
Kodian-At 26 years of age he will be declining??? Seriously?
smuzqwpdmx
Think he’s going to sign a one year contract when he hits free agency? The only way that happens is if he’s coming off a terrible/injured platform year. Otherwise, his next team will have him into his mid 30s. Whether he declines at 30 or at 35, well, that depends on his weight.

Talk- The ONLY way. Vlad stays in Toronto is they replace the artificial turf with real grass. OR they build a new stadium( which they talked about some time ago) and it has grass. I read about 3 years ago they asked a University to do a study and come up with a hybrid of turf. So this up coming year is supposed to be the year they were supposed to put in whatever the University came up with.

Ask any player that’s played on it. It’s like running on concrete. Bad for the knees.
User 2079935927
Believing he would be the future shortstop, the Angels gave BaldoQuin $8million. The sum so far exceeded the team’s $2.38 million International bonus pool for the 2014 class that the Angels were subject to a 100% overage tax that it increased the cost of the signing of signing Baldoquin to roughly $ 14million.
The move also barred the Angels from signing an international player for more than $300.000 during the 2015 and 2016 signing periods, knocking them out of contention for Guerrero Jr’s services.
Fixed it for you Duffy.
Dustyslambchops23
Just because Angels couldn’t sign him doesn’t mean they would have been able to.

Most of what you have posted is not true. Turf today is much different then Turf 20-30 yrs ago. The Difference on the knees for Vlad from Grass to Modern Day Turf is miniscule.
Seriously my friend it’s time for you to call it a day- you are not making yourself look like an intelligent human being.
User 2079935927
Talk, No I’ve never set foot on any playing surface other than natural grass. I’m basing on what I’ve read. MLB players hated playing on Astro Turf.
#1 During the summer the playing surface gets very hot (Unlike natural grass), In those cookie cutter stadiums that the Phillies and Reds used to play in it would get 130 degrees on the playing surface,
#2 Like I said before, It’s hard on the players knees. The players reference to as playing on a parking lot.
It took it’s toll on Vlad Sr. knees for one playing all those years in Montreal.
I remember numerous times watching Vlad make a play in RF and after throwing the ball back to the Infield , It would take him a minute or two to get up off his knees because of the pain.
Ask any player that played in the 70’s and 80’s, The time where the was quite few ballparks with Astro turf. They HATED it. Some players wouldn’t sign with a team that had it in their home ball park.. It’s not “Wisdom” it’s fact.

Jays – Gallen+ Marte plus one of Carrol or Thomas as potential replacements for Gurriel Jr or Teo if we lose them in 2 years.

Dustyslambchops23

Those deals don’t exist in baseball because every gm is a Ivy League guy who smartly don’t take risks like that.
The Mets will be the only team trying to pull off some attention seeking stupid deal. It’s interesting teams that have owners who listen to the fans or manage the team like fans are near or won’t be successful in the future. See Vancouver Canucks or New York mets in future.
Jaysfan1981
We would have signed the wrong Seager.
Kyle on a 1 year high AAV is all the Jays need at 3B to start the year.
He still has it on the defense side, and if he poops the bed with the bat, Groshans or Monero can be given a shot part way through the year
As encouraging as it is to hear the Jays were in on Corey I’m personally happy he’s with Texas at that price point.
So here’s the Christmas wish list.
FA adds
Seagar for 3B.
Suzuki for RF.
Kikuchi for the 5th spot.
K. Jansen for the 8th inning
Adding those 4 players allows us to deal members off our current roster in trades.
Gurriel JR/ Teo / Grichuk from our OF surplus
Kirk / Jansen / Mcguire from the C surplus
Pearson can also be used as a trade chip plus any other RP that teams may want to add
Groshans and Moreno should be off limits unless the absolute best of the best become available in trade. Im talking Buelher or Beiber for SP , not any OAK SP. They aren’t the top of tier
Even Moreno and Groshans for Jram wouldn’t be ideal. Although I would do Gurriel/Kirk/Pearson plus any 2 prospects not named Groshans and Moreno. Orelvis Martinez is said to be an Adrian Beltre clone.
On the LHH front. Except for Seagar (kyle) there isn’t much to offer in FA
Philly fans, tired of Harper yet? What’s it gonna take to get him off your hands?
Gurriel/Kirk/Martinez?
tstats
So many things are wrong with this.
Jansen would close
Harper ain’t movin
Jaysfan1981
That’s so many things?
Why is Jansen automatically the closer?
Why isn’t Harper moving?
Please do share, im interested to hear you expand on your take
tstats
Harper is an MVP candidate year and and year out on a contract that is less expensive on a yearly basis than one would think.
Jansen is the auto closer because of his own priorities. If he signs with the Jays there is agreement that he is closing. The man is making a borderline HOF case and needs those counting stats.
Pearson has less trade value than you think. As do your extra out fielders not named Teoscar.
Your LHH bat should come in the name of Jason Kipnis. Teach him third in spring training and he is a veteran presence.
Orel Saxhiser
Why would you sign one of the best closers in the game and not let him close? Do you really think a guy with 350 career saves would be interested in that? He is coming off a great season.
Why would Phillies fans be tired of Bryce Harper, who turned 29 in October and just won his second MVP award? Do you think other teams are sitting around trying to come up with ways to help the Jays? Also, the Phillies are trying to win, not rebuild.
Why would you want 34-year-old Kyle Seager on a high AAV? Even in a 35-HR season, his OPS+ was 100 while his 161 strikeouts were far and away his career-high.
Rsox
Because Jansen is not likely to sign somewhere where he isnt the Closer. And as rough as it is to watch Kenley sometimes, i don’t think there is a parallel universe out there where Jordan Romano gets the ball in the 9th over Kenley Jansen.
As for Harper, the 10 years remaining on his contract and the full no-trade clause would make tough to move
TalkSomeSense
Jaysfan
That is a wish unfortunately the Jays do not have an unlimited budget. By most accounts they have another 25-30m to spend in total.
( Unless it is someone they really like as another core piece )
I would do the Suzuki and K. Jansen signing then trade for K.Marte ( use Biggio +) . I’m ok with Espinal at 3rd for a year we do not need 6x 30 hr hitters. Then talk to Oakland about the cost of one of their 2 guys with a year left.
User 2079935927

Jaysfan1981
Thanks all for your opinions and I appreciate the explanation I requested.
We don’t really agree, but that’s ok. Im not trying to force my opinion on anyone and I’m not trying to change anyone’s minds either
I feel Jansen is starting his decline, that is why the Dodgers aren’t knocking down his door to re sign
I feel loyalty is worth alot, Romano hasn’t done anything to lose his job and bringing in a player who may be starting his decline is the exact reason I’d offer him a contract with him full knowing it’s an 8th inning role with the option to close if Romano can’t hold his job. Competition is a good thing.
I see no reason why Harper can’t be moved. Is it likely? Probably not. But let’s face it the Phillies aren’t good. The future also doesn’t look super bright for them in terms of payroll and prospects
Why not Trade Harper and get Groshans and Moreno for yourself. You’d probably get a nice return for Wheeler as well.
The kids you have playing are still young enough to go through a “retool” aimed at contention 2 or 3 years from now.
Miss the playoffs for the next 2-3 years and Harper/Wheeler plus all the kids (kingery bohm etc) have lost alot of their value. That puts you further behind the 8ball
Not going to stress about what random people on an internet site think about me or say. Youre all entitled to your opinions.
Although the old saying, opinions are like arseholes. Everyone has one and everyone’s stinks
Samuel
@ Jaysfan1981;
Let’s start with why would the Phillies trade Harper. To tell their fans that they’re going into another rebuild after the fans waited 6 years and wound up with nothing?
Why do they need Groshans? They have 2 quality SS prospects in Maton and Stubbs.
What do they do with Moreno when they have Realmuto?
And none of the players you’re proposing they take in trade have proven that they can play at the major league level.
As for the Phillies “not being good”…..
They finished 2nd in their division in 2021 with an injured SS playing, an Ace that had a poor season, a starting pitcher injured, and a crummy bullpen blowing games. Harper won the NL MVP. Wheeler finished 2nd in the Cy Young voting. Their owner is well heeled and committed to spending money for the right players. He wants to win now.
When you propose trades between teams, you first must consider that they have adult owners and skilled / proven FO people. They have their baseball ops department (major and minor leagues) in a position, and are not going to suddenly abandon it unless there is a good reason to. If that team punts the next 3 seasons fielding unproven players – most of whom will wash out – Philadelphia baseball fans will be up in arms…not to mention the TV contract they signed whose buyers will find a bunch of scrubs are what they’ll be selling to advertisers.
JohhnyBets67
@Sammy
Your beloved Phillies are not very good.
I know you love Girardi and Dombrowski. And you picked them to win the division but the Atlanta braves won the World Series without Mike Soroka and Ronald Acuna. That’s just crap about Didi.
They aren’t going to rebuild. They have talent. I’m pretty sure Harper has a NTC anyway. But they have a bloated payroll and a roster filled with holes. The Mets have spent their way into having a better club. I’m sure you won’t admit that—but they do for next year anyway.( The Phillies could too if they wanted to spend recklessly)
The organization has been really bad at developing talent within. If they go to a 14 team playoff the Phils have a chance to make that. Otherwise—see ya later.
Samuel
@ johnnie;
Yes, I like the Phillies and 7-8 other teams as well.
I was right about Didi – I had gout a 18 months ago. One cannot balance or walk properly. It doesn’t suddenly go away – it takes about a year to get the high uric acid levels back to normal. As for the Phillies at SS – along with Didi they have 2 solid prospects that are ML ready.
As for the extended playoffs – it changes everything as to how teams are constructed and what FO’s do in the offseason. The Rays have been on top of the future of team construction – with the Brewers, Astros, Giants, and Dodgers not far behind. Long-term contracts given out to multiple players are dangerous. Appears the Yankees FO / Ownership has finally realized that. (Were the Phillies to give Story 5-plus years it would be concerning.) I give Cohen this – while he flubbed on the Lindor contract he seems to have learned a lesson. The contracts he just gave out were a max of 4 years. That’s about right. As for the Phillies – unless they have extended injuries again, they’ll be in the playoffs in 2022. How they do preparing for them is what every non-rebuilding MLB team is now looking to do.
Samuel

except, to offer him what the rangers did, the blue jays would have had to offer him around 50 million more (texas has no state income tax, canada taxes are huge).
to beat it, likely would have had to go 10/400 and that’s just not happening at all (that’s trout money, and seager isn’t trout).
TalkSomeSense
Players are taxed in the state or province the games are played so only half of Seagar’s contract would have been at Ontario’s rate.
The difference between a Non tax state and Ontario is 13.16% x 162.5 million = 21.4m
Canada’s top federal rate is – 33% vs US ( 37% ) so in effect you can take 4% off the above number leaving us with 9.16% x 162.5m = 14.88m. Not 50m not 400m .
A contract of 10x 345 would be identical.
Still glad the Jay’s didn’t do it.
rememberthecoop
Two points Steve: have to add on another 15MM or so to luxury tax to cover minor league /medical. Also, I’m sure that Correa won’t be looking to be in Seager’s neighborhood – he will be looking to top Lindor’s 10-year commitment. I expect him to sign for at least 10 years, 342MM. Meanwhile, I think Seager is the better offensive performer and bats lefty to boot. Is Correa’s defense that much better that a team would pay him more? I don’t get it. But someone will.
Brew’88
What metrics are you focusing on to suggest Seager is a better bat than Correa? BA? They look very close to me.
Orel Saxhiser
I’m a Dodger fan who loved what Seager contributed to the team. But, though it won’t happen, I would consider Correa to be an upgrade if the Dodgers were to sign him. I’ve been a fan of both players since they arrived in MLB and prefer Correa. Stats are similar but it’s not just about stats. If I’m going to sign a shortstop to a long-term contract, I want to feel confident he will continue playing that position for several more years. Watching Seager play every day, it’s doubtful that will happen with him.
jimmertee
Fake news.
Toronto Blue Jays would never pay $325 m for Seager or anyone else. Shapiro wouldn’t do it and I hear that he is not allowed to do that by the board of directors. Rogers is still a public company and focused on the bottom line.
MagRupe
It’s a public company but the class A shares are owned by the Rogers family trust. They only person who would have to approve it is Edward Rogers. And he would (I imagine).

Jimmertree last year called Matz a number 47 starter and a dfa candidate. Ray didn’t know where the ball was going and Semien was a spare part.

Spare Tire Dixon
How about the Blue Jays trading for Josh Hader? The Brewers have Devin Williams waiting in the wings and badly need offense. Maybe Milwaukee would part with Hader for one of Toronto’s bats (Gurriel? Biggio?). The Jays could sign a corner OF without breaking the bank.
Samuel
@ Spare Tire Dixon;
The Brewers are into sustainable contention.
If the Brewers trade Hader they’d want at least 2 solid upper level prospects as well as a 3rd they can develop, and at least 5 years of control for each…..maybe they’ll throw in a secondary player from their roster to complete the trade.
The Brewers already have infielders better than them.
“The Jays could sign a corner OF without breaking the bank.”
So can the Brewers.
Spare Tire Dixon
Another option — Send Biggio and Kirk to Cubs for Contreras.
TalkSomeSense
Why? With Danny J inhouse and Moreno knocking on the door.
Plus 1 year of Contreras is a huge overpay for the Jays. One of them yes but not both.
dman07
I think the intention was real but not for a 10 year deal. I think if they landed C. Seager, Grichuk would have got dealt.
TalkSomeSense
I just read elsewhere that the Jays were in on Semien for 6 yrs at the same AAV as the Rangers but they went the extra year. I would say the Jays went 8 yrs on Seager
dman07
I heard that too but 7 years for Semien is too risky given his age. Seager for 8-10 will be out of range of what Shapiro/front office wants to do. I’m curious to see if they end up putting Biggio at 3rd and sign someone to play 2B or do they sign a 3B. I don’t see them moving Bo off of SS. Media keeps brining that up the last couple of offseasons…
HBan22
I think the Jays definitely made the right move in resisting giving out one of those mega deals to Semien or Seager. Their farm system is loaded with good infield prospects, and they’ll have to start paying up soon for Vlad, Bo, Teoscar, etc. Seager and Semien are great players, but in my opinion nowhere near worth what they got from Texas. My max offer to Seager would have been 8/250 and Semien 5/140. And even those deals could have turned out to be albatrosses.
shouldacouldawoulda
I would like to see the Jays go after the D’Backs and get Marte and Madison Baumgartner, Marte for 2nd base and MadBaum the next big pitching addition for top 5. Would Groshans, Grichuk, and Pearson make it happen? Will D’Backs be finally looking to dump salary for rebuild (MadBaum has 2 years at +20 mill left plus an option). They get new infielder with promise to replace Marte, and potential future starter in Pearson and Grichuk for the outfield, where they have a need. For Jays, Biggio becomes 4th outfielder, super sub, and Espinal the main 3rd option. Winners across the board, ney or yeh?
Dustyslambchops23
That’s not even close
And no rebuilding team is taking Grichuk and his salary unless jays send cash and or a much better prospect
TalkSomeSense
Actually MadBaum’s contract is a lot more underwater then Grich, I would not do that trade from the Jays side and I doubt the Dbacks weight down Marte’s value by packaging him with Madbaum.
Orel Saxhiser
@houldacouldawoulda, That’s an interesting idea. Since Bumgarner is owed $60MM total for his remaining three years (including the option), yours is a proposal where the Jays can unload Grichuk’s final two years and $20MM-plus. A problem is that Marte’s remaining three years are so darned affordable at @26.4MM. Even though Bumgarner makes a ton, it kinda seems like the Dbacks should get another decent prospect or two and
a pocketful of cash. Close to a “yeh” for me though not quite.
TalkSomeSense
This trade in effect becomes 40m+ Groshans+ Pearson for Marte. As much as I’d like to see Marte on the Jays that is an overpay.
Orel Saxhiser
@TalkSomeSense, If you factor in how little Marte makes, it’s much less of an overpay.
TalkSomeSense
Yes but The 40m negates a large chunk of Marte’s value when factored in with the surplus value of Pearson and Groshans. That 40m has a steep opportunity cost.
Orel Saxhiser
It would depend on whether the Jays think Bumgarner has anything left. From Arizona’s standpoint, the question is whether to get a better prospect haul for Marte alone or a lesser one by ridding themselves of Bumgarner in the same deal. Since the Jays would be dumping Grichuk’s contract, it makes sense if (big if) the Jays think Bumgarner can help them. Personally, I would pass on him, but it only takes one team to say “yes” to such a thing.
TalkSomeSense
40m+ Marte’s salary of 26m = 66m. Groshans and Pearson have a surplus value of at least 35m so if Bom and Grichuk are a wash in value the question is , is Marte worth 100m over 3 yrs.
If Bom could pitch to a 4.00 era/Fip in the ALE and be a solid #4 , stay healthy for 3 yrs. I would pull the trigger. I don’t think he is that guy though.

@ Cey Hey;
Off topic, but……
Friedman and his Dodgers are having a great off-season. I’ll explain. They are getting back to where they should be – away from the extended long-term contracts.
Furthermore, if the expanded playoffs come to pass – and they should – the Dodgers will be positioned properly.
Will explain another time if you read this.
Orel Saxhiser
@ Samuel, I agree completely. Over at CBS Sports, the writer gave the Dodgers a “D” for their pre-lockout off-season. I think that’s ridiculous. For 2022, the team needs a boost in the rotation and an additional corner outfield. There’s plenty of time for Friedman to pull something off either before opening day or at the trade deadline. In fact, the probability of expanded playoffs gives them more time to get something done than usual.
The 2022 team will be fine. Then it’s back to having a manageable payroll with the next wave of kids (Miller, Cartaya, Vargas, Pages, et al) hopefully ready to contribute. Cartaya is said to be exploding with the bat, and may soon be considered the game’s best prospect in that regard.
Busy season for me and, apparently, you as well. Wife’s knee surgery next week (a re-do of last year’s failed knee replacement), lots of writing to finish, and the usual year-end stuff. Have a happy holiday season if our paths don’t cross. We’ll talk beisbol soon enough.
Orel Saxhiser
Jeesh, after writing that, I learned that my wife’s December 20 surgery has been postponed until at least January 18 due to a COVID case uptick at the hospital.
TalkSomeSense
Shame, I wish her all the best. I was a year waiting on Pit Tumor surgery finally had it 4 weeks ago so I know what that’s like.
JoeBrady
Best wishes on the surgery.
Orel Saxhiser
TalkSomeSense, Thanks for the best wishes. We are learning the art of being patient.
Something else just happened: I was an intense college basketball fan for more than half a century but decided just this year to cut back. I attended Seton Hall and graduated from Rutgers. Anyhow, I turned on the Seton Hall-Texas game. On the call is none other than Dodgers play-by-play guy Joe Davis. The guy is always so well-prepared. When he does Big East hoops, you tend to think he covers both teams on a regular basis. Seton Hall up on #7 Texas. Rutgers leading #1 Purdue at the half. I guess I need to get back into the swing.
Orel Saxhiser
Joe Brady, thanks. I’m in the on-deck circle for that, though my doctor said I can maybe wait another four years.
Robertowannabe
@ Cey Hey Good luck on your wife’s surgery. That has happened to a lot of people. Hope that your wife’s surgery is minor and that the delay is not a crucial thing for her.
BlueJ’sAllDay
I’m not sure why no one in the media or all the intelligent people here for that matter haven’t considered one important thing: maybe the blue jays have already approached both Vlad and Bo about long term extensions and both are willing to wait it out till free agency. That’s one drawback of drafting sons of former mlb players – they are already financially set from their dads and have no problem waiting out the market to free agency. This leaves the jays in a position of uncertainty and when you’re in the midst of the most loaded free agent class in history and also the big players not fully engaged in the market because of luxury tax concerns, then you have to consider names like Freeman, Seager and Correa. The Jays have money to spend and if Bo and Vlad aren’t willing to sign up for the 5-7 year window then go ahead and grab these elite talents while you have the opportunity. Years like this with this calibre of players never happens so why not just go for it.
BlueJ’sAllDay
And to simplify that point even more: if Bo isn’t willing to sign a fair long term extension, then why not sign Correa and Bo moves to 2nd. Correa’s defence would be a game changer for the Jays. Also if Vlad isn’t willing to sign a fair long term extension, then sign Freeman and get that true left handed threat they really need. Vlad and Freeman can split 1B / DH. Then trade them both in their second or last years of arbitration and get a huge haul for the future. They could then compete for them on the open market like everyone else if that’s what they both are looking for, which I feel is the case for both. I don’t believe either will sign long term before free agency. Too much risk for the Jays that they both walk and you get next to nothing. Either sign the extension or start looking at plan B

BlueJ’s,
What’s the word on the Blue Jays building a new ballpark? Did Covid put it on the back burner for now.?
Dustyslambchops23
So you’d rather give 30 year olds 30 million dollars a year instead of 24 year olds?
There is zero chance any of that happens, it just doesn’t make sense because both Vlad and Bo will get expensive through arb. You’ll end up paying close to 100 million a year for 2 Shortstops and 2 first basemen

I love reading stuff like a player is signed as far out as 2028 and I’m over here thinking if the world survives 2022 first!

Losing Semien and Ray is going to hur Toronto next year. They need to save money and get the 3 kids signed long term. Once they get that figured out they should be able to build up around them.
HBan22
They lost Ray and Semien, but they signed Gausman and have a ton of good infield prospects (Groshans, Martinez, Jimenez, etc) who will be ready anywhere from next season to 2023. They also have several utility infield types with decent upside (Biggio, Espinal, Smith, Lopez) who can hold down the fort until the youngsters are ready. In my opinion, the Jays need to add one more starter and one more decent bat, but they are in very good shape already for 2022 and especially beyond.

Did Rogers shy from actually committing big dollars to the club? You monopolize cable, internet, and phone in Canada with Bell; you’d think you’d be able to get him
Robertowannabe
I’d say about 3/4 of the league had an interest in Seager at the start of the FA season. Most dropped out as the price of course rose. In the end, just a handful of teams in the league can compete with these contract numbers for the top players. Makes for some good early conversations but no one is ever shocked by who signs these caliber of players.
Samuel
“3/4 of the league had an interest in Seager …”
Seriously
LOL
I doubt that even 1/3’rd of MLB teams had interest in him, knowing the bucks he was looking for long before the 2021 season ended.
The contract he got from Texas is going to look awful within 5 years.
Robertowannabe
Interested enough to ask how much anyway the bottom 1/4 would not bother. the middle 1/2 would at least ask to get a gauge on the market at a minimum and see what all he was asking for. Many would drop out then but in talking to different players agents they can get a better read on the market to see who then to seriously target. One never knows if on of the top asks for a player is not necessarily just the most money. Might be something else like geographical for personal reasons and might accept less to get to a preferred city. Not many players would fit this but some would. You would not know till you ask.
I do agree that this contract will eventually hurt the Rangers. Most of these contracts do hurt the signing team. .
Samuel
@ gozurman1;
Time is money. FO’s only have so much.
It was well known that Seager was insisting on playing SS at the beginning of his new contract. Let’s start with 2 points….
1. How many teams like their SS’s and either have them under control or under a contract already:
Braves, White Sox, Royals, Dodgers (why they got Trea Turner), Marlins, Brewers, Met, Padres, Giants, Rays.
10 teams.
2. How many teams are either in a rebuild or knew that Seager was out of their price range:
DBacks, Orioles, Reds, Guardians, Rockies, A’s, Pirates.
7 teams.
–
So that leaves 13 possible teams “interested”, and I’m being quite charitable as I doubt the Cubs, Astros (they wouldn’t give Correa more than 5 years, why would they give that to Seager?), Twins, Mariners, and Cardinals, had any intention of giving a long term contract to a SS at this time. They might be interested in a 3-4 year contract…maybe.
–
If Seager’s agents had come down in their asking price the word would spread throughout MLB FO’s like wildfire. It never did. In the end I believe Seager had only a few realistic suiters (I know the Tigers – looking for a SS – wouldn’t go as high as he wanted…put the Yankees in that category as well as others). Fact is that he signed with a desperate owner, a desperate current FO head, and a baseball ops department that have been below ordinary in their team construction over the past 4-5 years. That’s what the agents look for.
It’s a contract that within 5 years ties the player and the team to something they would both be happy to get away from. Like many bad contracts, who knows if someone will bite.

man i’m surprised no jays fans in here mentioned kris bryant. multi positional utility. good club house guy. fits the jays to a T.
sign him tomorrow.
Spare Tire Dixon
Call Arizona about Ketel Marte. That dude would be great for 2B/OF.
Spare Tire Dixon
I think the Diamondbacks have pieces that could help put Toronto over the top.
Propose a trade of Lourdes Gurriel, Alejandro Kirk, + other prospects to ARIZONA for 2B K.Marte and OF D.Peralta
Gurriel has more controllable years for Arizona to rebuild with and acquiring him would not signal a complete teardown in AZ. Alejandro Kirk is expendable. Other TOR prospects would likely be required.
Marte and Peralta are both in their walk years, I believe. AZ seems unlikely to retain either. Peralta gives TOR a LH bat and Marte is the prize thanks to his versatility all over the IF/OF. Ketel leading off allows Springer to hit in the heart of the order too.
1. Marte, 2B (S)
2. Bichette, SS (L)
3. Springer, CF (R)
4. Guerrero, 1B (R)
5. Peralta, LF/DH (L)
6. Hernandez, DH/LF (R)
7. Biggio, 3B (L)
8. Grichuk, RF (R)
9. Jansen, C (R)
TalkSomeSense
Marte has 3 yrs left if I’m not mistaken, Gurriel JR has 2 . I would prefer Espinal at 3B then Biggio.
Biggio could be included in the package but I would LOVE having Marte . 2b and coverage for Springer in the event he has injuries.
Russelmysanchez21
Regardless of hitting lefty… peralta is a massive downgrade offensively from gurriel jr. also, he likely hits bottom 3 in jays order. No thanks on peralta, he makes jays worse not better unless replacing grichuk
JackStrawb
What a ludicrous signing. 10/$325m for a player who peaked early, as long ago as 2016-2017? This is like signing Javy Baez to 10/325 following his 2018-2019 seasons—only significantly worse.
Pro rate 2020, and Seager isn’t even a 3 WAR player since the start of 2018. Beyond bizarre. Why would you figure this is the best way to spend 1/3 of a billion dollars? Why? How?
