As of last night, the Collective Bargaining Agreement between MLB and the MLBPA has expired and the league is officially in a lockout, meaning that no transactions will be permitted until a new CBA is ratified. This outcome had been widely anticipated throughout the industry, which is why there has been such a frenzy of deals in recent weeks, as many teams and players tried to cram in some of their offseason business before the lockout arrived.
One such deal that was reported a couple weeks ago was the Astros agreeing to re-sign Justin Verlander to a $50MM guarantee over two years, with an opt-out after 2022. However, Jon Heyman of MLB Network notes that the deal has not yet been announced and doesn’t seem to be official. Furthermore, the official MLB page for Houston’s 40-man roster doesn’t list Verlander’s name, nor does the signing appear on Verlander’s transaction tracker.
At this point, it’s unclear why the deal was not officially inked before the CBA expired and there’s no reason to suspect that it’s in any sort of jeopardy. However, it is at least noteworthy that it will apparently remain in a state of limbo as long as the lockout continues.
Verlander’s last full season was 2019, where he threw 223 innings, racking up 300 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.58, winning the AL Cy Young that year. However, Tommy John surgery put a halt to his 2020 after throwing just 6 innings and caused him to miss the 2021 season entirely. Shortly after the end of the season, the 38-year-old held a showcase to demonstrate that he was back to full strength and seemed to have succeeded in that regard, garnering robust interest in his services. About a week later, the reports of the deal with Houston emerged.
Maybe because he’s coming off major injury and needed to take a physical before midnight and that probably didnt happen yet. Just speculating…
He’s been in their building since surgery so they should know physically where he is.
He had weeks to take his physical since the agreement, what are you talking about?
Bottom line is he’s free to see what the new CBA is like. Should a team that hadn’t shown serious interest have the room and desire, they can sign him. Similarly, the Astros can reassess. it won’t look good if they do but they already are despised throughout most of the league anyway…
Also his teammates don’t want him there, so that could be a big reason.
what? where did you read that. I’m 99% sure teammates love Verlander. he’s a HOF type of guy
394sd is just jumping on that the players nixed JV throwing out a World Series first pitch. SMH
Physical check didn’t go as hoped?
Or the Astros may wish to delay the final ink because they don’t know what could happen physically before spring training. Supposedly no one can negotiate with him between now and then so they won’t lose out on the deal.
I doubt that is the case, Verlander could have just signed elsewhere if he thought the Astros were delaying the contract for those purposes. With the money being thrown around the last week, I’m sure he would’ve thrown his hat back in the ring.
Sure, I doubt that’s the scenario as well. Just a hypothetical. My real gut tells me it’s nothing to worry about
Hmmmm I smell Angels
Maybe he got wind of “Dead arm Max” getting 130m before he signed….
The only one who announced it was his brother, right? Maybe we should ask his brother again!
Certainly interesting. But much ado about nothing I believe
Completely agree
Dead arm is nothing to be concerned about. Very normal for pitchers to get it. Generally it’s something you in spring training not so much at the end of the season but still very normal. Doesn’t mean there’s any injury. Mad Max has a rubber arm. Reminds me a lot of Nolan Ryan.
Thx Dr Kid3⚾️
Dodgers should not have needed him to close out a game. He should have had his normal rotation. He’s 37 not 23 so Dodgers were idiots with him. He was 7-0 down the stretch and they needed to take care of him regardless.
Manager Dave Roberts misused used Max scherzer instead of closing game 5 he could have started game 7 Dodgers could have won the world series
Dave Roberts blunder
That’s pretty strange, but it’s probably an issue with scheduling physicals. I doubt it’s anything about gettin g cold feet about the contract.
I understand the love for JV, especially being a Tiger’s fan. But, if you’re handing out this kind of money, why not offer a similar deal DET-Baez made for Story? Is JV, 39 year old recovering TJ, more pivotal than Story?
Trevor Story isnt a future hall of fame pitcher. Mlb is literally an arms race. Look at what gerrit cole got. Max scherzer 130 million at 37. These guys are like unicorns.
True. I think it’s the TJ recovery that would concern me; more than Story’s abilities to match Correa’s production.
There sure seem to be a lot of unicorns and GOATs these days.
I’m not sold on Trevor story. Good player, of course. Statistically his offense and defense trended in the wrong direction this past year. The biggest reason is because his home/road splits are drastic
Rockies players struggle on the road, especially in the first series of the road trip due to the change in elevation. Coors field is arguably the most hitter friendly park but there are other overly hitter friendly parks around the league, the difference is the drastic change in elevation every time you leave your home park. I would rather have Story at Baez money than Correa at Lindor money, 10 times out of 10.
Story can’t pitch and has arm troubles. Tigers offered him a deal that had required games played and injury protections. Incentive laden so Story said no. Astros should have given the money to Robbie Ray.
Dave, do you have a link for this incentive-laden proposal?
Astros should have signed Ray as well, not instead of.
That would’ve put them way over the luxury tax threshold and they would not have had money to address the shortstop or centerfield situations.
The link to Story’s incentive laden offer from the Tigers is at DetroitDavegibberish.com
Sounds like there’s a secret deal with the Detroit tigers. Stay tuned
Tuned to what? Your imagination?

Gotem
He saw Scherzer sign with the Mets and decided he wants to knock Scherzer off the back page and sign with the Yankees… just a joke, yankees are fast asleep…ZZZZzzzz
Cashman nothing but thrilled over the lockout because it gives him an excuse to not negotiate with free agents.
George steinbrenner would of destroyed this free agency. He would rather die than let the mets get scherzer. Im perplexed at the yankees inactivity.
Hal doesn’t want to spend that type of cash for some reason. He just isn’t the same as daddy. Fans crucify Cash which is warranted but he’s not the one making the calls over $$$$
Spot-on correct.
I am surprised (a little) by how many fans call their GMs ‘cheap’. The GMs don’t create the budget or fund the piggy bank. And you guys aren’t nearly as bad as RS fans. If Bloom or Cashman are given $230M budgets, they are spending exactly $230M.
*would’ve
Jerry Seinfeld must be friends with Cohen and said get Scherzer and the Mets go to the playoffs!
Verlander had pen to paper and then caught a case of Scherzer-envy.
Verlander not showing up to a single game the last 2 years to support his team and then backing out of an agreement last second would be something you’d see on a reality show about real housewives.
Kate told JV no…….
Interesting turn of events …..
truly is perhaps “much ado about nothing” but this seems to leave areas open …….
Lord forbid …. what if there is an arm injury during the lockout??? What if there is some type off accident or event that calls JV’s health into question???
So interesting that over two weeks that agreement wasn’t finalized. Most agreements were signed within a day or two.
All good points. However, a counterpoint would be: he has made like $250MM+ over his career, he’ll be just fine.
JV getting 50 million guaranteed after not pitching in 2 years is nuts anyway! Love JV so good for him!
True.
True.
True.
I’m just saying that an injury over these few weeks / months could cause the Astros to back out.
Or seeing Max’s contact could cause second thoughts if JV continues to progress.
JV has a handshake agreement with the owner. Both of them have more money they know what to do with. Relax. Unless one of the parties gets hit by a bus, no one is backing out.
JV not in a Astros uniform next year maybe he decided he’s going to Hollywood
Yankees looming in this
Yankees have other issues. Stanton’s contract and Judge’s new contract to be…..
Someone “dropped the ball.”
He couldn’t get away from motor boating his wife to go in and get a physical.
I don’t blame him. You seen her?
Motor Boating?
I’ve heard “Welding”…
I’ve got an URGENT update.
People are saying that antivaxxer “Typhoid Tony” Rizzo called JV and clued him in on the controversial allegations of an Astros cheating scandal.. They deny all wrongdoing.
On advice of Tony as counsel, JV is making no move until he sees the evidence. All of it!
That was one of the single dumbest things I’ve read on this site, congrats.
UPDATE Urgent message from channel 7 newscaster
Ron Burgundy ((( CANNONBALL )))
I believe that it hasn’t been announced so that the Astros would have an open roster spot in case of a last minute opportunity before the lockout. I believe he will officially be announced when the lockout is lifted.
That makes total sense. Bravo, Thom, for solving that for the rest of us.
It’s probably just some minor details that need ironing out. My best guess is that both sides agreed to finish it after the labor stoppage.
Maybe just a small thing to iron out another 50 million and 2 more years
Now that everyone in the baseball world has nothing but time in their hands, a reporter should interview Verlander and ask him exactly what is up with this. Why not?
I wonder if seeing Max Scherzer get 42 mil per year now makes him question signing for “just” 25
Could it be that they’re protecting a rule 5 player with that roster spot And will make a transaction later?
Maybe he not sure yet
