Dec. 21: The A’s have formally announced Kotsay as their new manager. He signed a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth season, per the team.
Dec. 20: The Athletics are hiring Mark Kotsay as their next manager, reports Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (Twitter link). The news comes as little surprise, as Heyman had reported over the weekend that Oakland was zeroing in on Kotsay for the position.
It’ll be the first managerial stint for the 46-year-old, who spent the 2021 campaign as the A’s third base coach. While he’d only served in that capacity for one season, the longtime MLB outfielder has been on the Oakland staff for a while. Kotsay originally signed on as bench coach over the 2015-16 offseason. After two years in that capacity, he bounced to quality control coach for a few seasons before taking over third base coaching duties last winter.
Now, Kotsay’s in position to oversee a dugout for the first time. His taking over the managerial chair in Oakland this winter would’ve seemed completely improbable just a few months ago. Longtime A’s skipper Bob Melvin — generally regarded as one of the better managers around the league — remained under contract after the team exercised a 2022 option on his services in June. Yet Oakland brass eventually granted Melvin permission to explore opportunities elsewhere, and the three-time Manager of the Year fielded inquiries from the Padres. San Diego and Melvin finalized a three-year deal in early November, leaving Oakland on the hunt for a new dugout leader for the first time in over a decade.
Melvin’s departure was nothing short of shocking. Once the dust was settled, however, it became clear that Kotsay was as strong a candidate as anyone to succeed him. Not only has the latter spent the past six seasons taking on various roles in Oakland, he spent the 2014 campaign as a special assistant in the Padres’ front office and logged the following year as the Friars’ hitting coach.
That’s a wide array of experience, particularly considering Kotsay’s not that far removed from hanging up his spikes. The ninth overall pick in 1996 coming out of Cal State Fullerton, Kotsay made his big league debut with the Marlins a little more than a year after his draft day. He’d appear in the majors in each of the next sixteen seasons, continuing his playing career all the way through 2013.
Kotsay appeared with seven different organizations during his MLB career, including two separate stints in San Diego and four years (2004-07) with the A’s. That stretch included a .314/.370/.459 showing in his first year in the Bay Area that stands out as one of the better seasons of his career. Oakland’s current top two front office decision-makers — executive vice president Billy Beane and general manager David Forst — were already in key positions with the A’s during that time, so Kotsay’s original stint in the organization likely laid the foundation for the key post-playing roles he’d eventually assume.
While Kotsay has yet to manage at any level professionally, he’s long been viewed as a viable candidate. By 2015, he’d been mentioned as a possibility to lead the Padres’ clubhouse on an interim basis after the firing of Bud Black, although that role eventually went to Pat Murphy. By the 2019-20 offseason, he was garnering consideration from clubs to land a managerial role on a permanent basis. He reportedly sat down with each of the Giants, Pirates, Astros and Red Sox that winter but didn’t ultimately land a gig. Last year, he interviewed with the Tigers for the position that eventually went to A.J. Hinch, but he’ll now get his opportunity with the franchise he arguably knows as well as any.
Aside from Kotsay, the A’s reportedly considered bullpen coach Marcus Jensen and hitting coach Darren Bush as possible internal options. Oakland also looked into Rays’ bench coach Matt Quatraro, Red Sox’s bench coach Will Venable and Astros’ bench coach Joe Espada. With the A’s the last team of the offseason to finalize their managerial situation, each of that group will have to wait at least one more year in the pursuit of their own first managerial nods.
Kotsay’s first order of business figures to be nailing down the coaching staff, which he and the front office can embark upon during the lockout. Once the transactions freeze is lifted, the A’s appear to be in for a rather significant roster overhaul. The front office is always operating under a tight budget due to payroll restraints, and reports have suggested for months that the A’s could trade key players (i.e. Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas) in an effort to reduce costs. Indeed, reports suggested Melvin’s $4MM salary may have been part of the reason the A’s allowed him to head to San Diego in the first place, although it’s likely the organization’s affinity for their longtime skipper was also a factor.
The specific form the restructure takes won’t be known until there’s a new CBA in place. Yet it’s likely Kotsay and his staff will be tasked with leading a club that looks very different, both from last year’s 86-win squad and the roster as currently constructed. That could make for a tough challenge for a first-year skipper, but the front office clearly believes in Kotsay’s ability to lead the franchise through that transition.

Can he play center too?
Francys01
Congratulations to Kotsay for getting the job. We shall see how he performs as the new manager. The A’s always find ways to win like the Rays. I know that they might rebuild, but let’s see how they play with Kotsay as the manager.

Francys replied to my comment without engaging with it at all so that their comment would be at the top of the page in order to farm likes to feed his ego. If they are going to do so, at least engage with the comment you are replying to. Otherwise, just start your own thread,

Looks like someone is angry about getting ratioed by a person who isn’t always negative…
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
I just gave Francys a “like” because of what you said. I’m pretty sure I see you hopping up to the top of threads too. Guess what? There’s nothing wrong with it. Hypocrite.
claude raymond
Your name is “doesn’t like the cubs” which essentially indicates negativity is a constant withyou Baseball Fan..Chipper was answering my question. His answer, to me says, “I’ve responded and if you want to discuss my response, I’m game” but Francys response ignored chipper’s sentiment that with laureano suspended, who plays center field? Jokingly inferring Kotsay can play center. So, my guess is Chipper was hoping for some discussion regarding CF. Francy responded disregarding Chippers desire to discuss center field. Try to keep up Baseball Fan who is negative about the Cubs.
claude raymond
it’s pretty obvious that Chipper was expecting some discussion of “who’s gonna play center”. I don’t follow the A’s, so I can’t respond regarding his obvious allusion, tongue in cheek, about Kotsay playing center. It intended to discuss A’s center field issue without Marte. Are A’s fans this dim? I don’t think so but I’m having my doubts
bhambrave
Kotsay played CF when he was with the Braves, so Chipper’s question, while tongue in cheek, had that little extra level of relevance.

Props to you for caring that much to write a paragraph about it
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
Seriously, though? People do that all the time on this site. They make their statement at the top so they don’t have to scroll down or so more people see it. I have never seen a rule anywhere that says a reply has to be anything more than that. I know it technically says “reply” but it might as well say “this is the button you click if you want your comment as high as possible.” I post things at the top all the time and get replies that have nothing to do with what I said. I don’t whine about it. I understand why people do it. No one wants to scroll down through hundreds of comments to see a reply to there’s if they don’t have too. Who really cares anyway? This is the internet and it happens on thousands of sites. I wish I had the time to care about where people post their replies. If Francys wants to post at the top more power to him. There’s no rule that says if you get the top post people who reply are only allowed to talk about what you want them to talk about. Stop whining and realize everyone is allowed to talk about what they want and post it anywhere they want. Get over it.
The Baseball Fan
I agree, if anything, it’s the one who attacks a person for commenting at the top of a thread who has the “attention seeking behavior”
Please, Hammer. Don't hurt 'em.
If anything is “attention seeking behavior” it’s commenting at the top of the thread seconds after it was posted before you even have time to read the article. To be fair to CJIK he wasn’t the one who initially called out Francys. He did say it was “attention seeking behavior” though immediately after he himself practiced attention seeking behavior. A lot of people are always going to reply at the top of threads regardless if what the first comment is. People need to get over it. There are more important things in life to complain about. If someone can show me a rule that says you can’t do that I am all ears. Until then people should expect it to happen. I get CJIK was expecting someone to talk about his comment but Francys in no way impeded that. It’s not like Francys’ comment prevented someone from actually responding to CJIK. Anyone could and they still can. Please show me. Where is there a rule that says a reply has to be relevant to the initial comment?

Why are all your comments so shallow?
A'sfaninLondonUK
@ Yankee Clipper.
Normally enjoy your comments but your “cheap” shot is just that.
Examining the idea of cheapness:

There – sorted – that’s all rather cheap….
RobM
@YankeeClipper, I see some here think your comment about “he’s cheap” is a cheap shot, but it certainly is not. With the A’s, cost (as in low cost) is clearly part of their process. Doesn’t mean they don’t believe in Kotsay, but anyone calling you out for highlighting a truth are being a bit disingenuous with their comments.
A'sfaninLondonUK
@RobM
“With the A’s, cost (as in low cost) is clearly part of their process.”
To hear the above ad nauseum alongside the two fans “joke” and the knackered stadium saga on every A’s thread gets a tad dull, frankly. Are you trying to tell me that the A’s being on the frugal side is news to anyone other than undiscovered tribes* in the Amazon?
And all I was pointing out – alongside enjoying @yankeeclippers comments on other threads – there are different types of cheapness. I’m asking whether Yankees fans are as frustrated at their style of cheapness as A’s fans are of ours? I know the answer.
So apologies for not making that quite clear.

Waiting for the “A’s Finalize Coaching Staff” story in a few days. Good for Kotsay, hope he does well.

I think he will. The A’s, like the Rays, are good at identifying talent.

The A’s could also sign him to be a bench player. Player/Manager – haven seen those in a long times.

He’s 46, there’s a lot younger players who could probably do this feasibly. Rich Hill maybe.

i’m sure losing an all-star caliber outfielder to suspension and losing a top starting pitcher to injury had nothing to do with losing games
luca brasi
The A’s were taking on water long before Laureano and Bassett went down. Something wasn’t right. By the time the team went to Seattle even Marte Dialed his game back. He wasn’t going to risk injuring himself for that team when the A’s were going nowhere fast.

If the A’s get Quatraro for bench coach and Espada for 3B coach they will have done very well here. Kotsay was a longtime manager prospect – nice to see a few less ex-catchers dominating the scene these days with Farrell, Cora, Roberts and Martinez dominating the WS winners circle in recent years.
I still am not convinced they are going to be in sell-mode, especially if a salary floor is initiated in these deals. It might make sense for them to sign Chapman and Olson and go out onto the FA market and fill in the blanks (there arent too many, especially if you believe in Nick Allen).
The “tear down” seems to all fake news. Its a done deal to the media, but based off no actual comments from the front office, who have merely said they will listen to all trade offers, but pretty much all teams do this?
StudWinfield
I honestly don’t believe the MLBPA has the leverage to institute a floor. I don’t see it as something they would strike over.
stpbaseball
while that’s true, the owners included it in a counter, I believe. it’s certainly possible although perhaps not probable and I don’t think it’s a great idea personally
damon389
I think much of it hinges upon what happens w/Howard Terminal. If the A’s can get the final commitment from the Oakland City Council and the infrastructure costs are really and truly there, then I could see the A’s start acting like a MLB team and actually sign a few guys long-term while moving a few other pieces for young talent.
I get it. It’s Oakland and ANYTHING can happen. That said, the A’s have NEVER come remotely close to a new ballpark as they are now- and if they get the binding agreement from the OCC I think they’d be smart to start locking in a few guys to build a team around. The Matts would be a good place to start.
Otherwise, I see them tearing it all down knowing that they’re off to Vegas.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@A’s fan in UK – There’s no reason for Quatraro to leave the Rays to become the bench coach for the A’s. That would be a lateral move for him and would work against his chances of becoming a manager in the future as the A’s are going to be a worse club than the Rays for the foreseeable future. Plus I doubt the Rays would let him out of his contract for a lateral move unless significant compensation is involved. I don’t see Billy giving up prospects for a bench coach. Same goes for Espada. 3rd base coach would be a ‘demotion’ for him.
joebourgeois
Re: Espada and Quatraro: their current employers would have to give permission to interview for lateral moves, and they’re very unlikely to be interested anyway – especially Espada, who’s heir apparent to Dusty Baker.
Highest IQ
Should have had Matt Olson manage to save money.

Have to say, this is definitely the best option among those who were reported in contention for the job. Kotsay knows the city of Oakland and knows the challenges the team faces in the region. He knows how rabid the fans can be irregardless of record, so long as the plumbing holds and doesn’t wash them out.
In addition, he knows the system. He’s probably spent the last seven years or so studying our farm system top to bottom and knows who he has and where they are in their development… ie: he knows that Barrera is probably MLB Ready where Austin Beck is probably another decade away. It is an example, but it fits given how the team is going to dive face first into a partial tear down. Personally, I just hope Kotsay does what Melvin did when he first arrived… used his youth to their fullest and platoons when ever possible.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
I can’t believe some adults still use “irregardless” like its a word. Regardless or irrespective, but never irregardless.
A'sfaninLondonUK
@ Sid
Irregardless of some adults I can’t believe you bothered.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Sid Bream – That word annoys me too but some dictionaries have started to include it as a slang word. Unfortunately, it’s here to stay, irregardless of our feelings about it.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Lol, well done. It’s just more dumbing down of the language, next thing they will be adding mute point, could care less, for all intensive purposes, etc.

Brew’88
in all fairness, the intent of his use of the word was such that pseudoirregardless would have made more sense
LordD99
@Sid Bream, I agree, but somewhere in the last few years it has been deemed by all the major dictionaries as a word that meets the standards for definition. (Note my tortured sentence as a way of not acknowledging it as a word.)
Dictionaries now define irregardless because it meets their criteria for inclusion. It’s been used by millions of people for hundred of years with a specific meaning: “regardless”. That is how language evolves. It’s never a real word until it is.
Something similar, and actually much worse, has happened with the word nonplussed. A wonderful word that means someone is agitated or bewildered to the point of annoyance. Unfortunately, people misused it thinking it means “unfazed” mistaking the “non” as a prefix to “plussed,” when it isn’t, and frankly, who knows what a plussed person is. Sounds painful. Sadly, the alternative definition is the exact opposite of the intended meaning, so I really don’t know what someone means when they use nonplussed, leaving me, frankly, nonplussed. Wait, wut?
So what does all this mean? The lockout better end soon before MLBTR turns into daily grammar lessons!
Rsox
No surprise here. Was the obvious choice the moment Melvin left. The only other possibility would have been Ryan Christiansen who followed Melvin to San Diego.

On paper, this seems like a good hire. Low pressure (relatively speaking) hire.
For us A’s fans, the twenty year-old stadium drama appears to be nearing its close. The Environmental Impact Report released, with a recommendation to approve. It’s going to be up to the OCC but things are more tangible now then they ever were. Essentially, the project gets the final OK in early ’22 or they’re going to Vegas.
Let’s hope they get this over the line. Once Oakland and TB/MTL falls into place, MLB expands to 32 teams (Vegas and probably Nashville) with expansion teams announced by the end of ’22.
Datashark
Melvin was getting stale, A’s had to make changes as they should know their window is closed now and need some fixing – why pay melvin for it

Tough spot for Kotsay. The division is gonna be very challenging
Dorothy_Mantooth
At least Kotsay has a very competent POBO leading the front office in Billy Beane. If anyone knows how to trade players in their prime for up and coming stars, it’s Billy. We still don’t know how much they will tear it down this year but even if they trade all 5 players mentioned, Billy will make the necessary moves to field a competitive team for 2023. Kotsay knows this by being part of the organization so long. They’ll probably figure out how to win 75+ games in 2022 as well.
LordD99
…and so, Mark Kotsay will now become the manager the Mets will crave in a few years. This is not a knock on Buck, this is an acknowledgment of how Cohen will operate.

I knew Mark from CSU Fullerton days in the mid-90s. Even at that age he showed obvious managerial makeup. Really great dude, 100% baseball brain, baseball passion, tough assignment in Oak but he will push/inspire what remains of the As to overachieve. I’ll never forget Dayn Perry’s 2004 controversial Fox Sports article on how Kotsay was more valuable than Ichiro. Sadly the article is no longer on the web.
