Second base stands out as the most glaring area of need in the White Sox lineup, yet the idea of moving Yoan Moncada back to the keystone doesn’t seem too likely, NBC Sports Chicago’s Vinnie Duber opines. Moncada began his career with regular second base duty in 2017-18, yet has played exclusively as a third baseman over the last three seasons, posting very solid defensive numbers along the way. Beyond just the improved glovework, the position change also seemed to spark Moncada towards better numbers at the plate. As White Sox GM Rick Hahn told Duber and other reporters last month, Moncada is “a pretty darn good third baseman. He’s comfortable there….I don’t know if you want to upset the apple cart of something that’s working.”
That said, Hahn also twice said “never say never” about the possibility of a Moncada position change. The logic would be that the White Sox could be able to address a third base vacancy more easily than their second base vacancy, as many of the winter’s top available second basemen are already off the market. Moncada also wouldn’t have to stay at second base forever, if the Sox acquired a third baseman on a relatively short-term deal. Hypothetically, Kyle Seager could be open to a one-year deal to join a contender, or a trade candidate like the Athletics’ Matt Chapman is under team control only through 2023.
More from around the AL Central…
- The Tigers had interest in Kevin Gausman before the right-hander signed with the Blue Jays, ESPN’s Jeff Passan writes. Detroit hadn’t previously been linked to Gausman, though given how aggressively the Tigers courted the pitching market, it isn’t surprising that they checked in on his services as part of their broad search for arms. That search has already resulted in one major pitching signing, as Detroit signed lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to a five-year, $77MM pact.
- Gabriel Arias is an intriguing prospect in the Guardians’ farm system, and ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 82nd-best minor leaguer in all of baseball. Since the Guardians have several other notable middle infield options both on the active roster and in the minors, Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes and Joe Noga wonder if Arias might be a viable trade chip, if the team ultimately prefers other players as their ideal shortstop/second baseman of the future. Traditionally, Cleveland has been more apt to keep its top prospects rather than move them in deals, and yet between both the middle infield depth and the Guardians’ more glaring need for outfield help, the situation could be right for the club to move a prospect of Arias’ caliber. The 21-year-old Arias has already been part of one major trade in his young career, as he was one of the six players sent by the Padres to Cleveland in the Mike Clevinger deal in August 2020.
PutPeteinthehall
I am not of the opinion that third base is easier to fill than second base. No way I’d move Moncada. White Sox gave away a great contact hitter in Madrigal. They must have another player in mind for second base.
PeteWard8
Third base is limited compared to second base or shortstop.
Moncada has to stay and hit .299 vs lefties like he did a couple years ago. And Moncada has been a disappointment to me.
He still isn’t worth half of Chris Sale and may never be.
That trade is a loss and its five years later.
ChiSox_Fan
Bryant can play 3B and RF.
ChiSox_Fan
Sox got Kopech, too, in Sale trade. He will be fine.
Sale was injured past year +.
PeteWard8
Kopech a head case his whole life.
He hasn’t done nothing either.
Chris Sale was thrown away for
reasons other than a rebuild.
The trade is a bust for sox
It’s five years later.
PutPeteinthehall
Sale was the head case. He didn’t like the uniforms and cut them up before the game. Between this and his costs (future) he was jettisoned from the team. Kopech played for the MLB minimum last year. What was Sale’s production vs salary last season? Nice someone mentioned Bryant who’s looking to be another way overpaid player. Division still should be there for Pale Hose. Why not fill the second base position with a decent player – not a 25m a year man – and save a little for the deadline. BTW Boras is going to end up costing Bryant a huge payday. The last minute deal will be less. He’s already missed the boat.
PeteWard8
Sale wanted to win. Sale wasn’t trouble. Sale was traded for having to be pulled off Kenny Williams who was feeding the players baloney. Sale also told Kenny to get out of the clubhouse and don’t come back. Also the starting pitcher calls the jersey and Sale said if you want to use those jersey’s then don’t pitch me.
IronBallsMcGinty
When the boss says it’s a promotional throwback jersey game you wear the jersey.
WtfMate
Pete, don’t you have a 670 the score host to argue with?! You sound like the idiots that call Dan Bernstein to suggest trades that will never happen.
Dogbone
Pete is correct about Kopech being a head case. I’d add, an immature head case. Boston knew what they were doing when the got rid of these two guys.
Moncada doesn’t bring it every day. Once or twice a week, he appears to want to compete. And he looks like he wants someone to bring him a winter coat at 3B, when in April and May the temps are less than 60.
Dogbone
And ‘eMate’, you sound like the morons that believe every excuse that Mully throws out every morning, to cover up the Chisox ineptitude’s.
Yoyosoxsox
moncada is 26 and is pretty damn good and kopech we are really just getting into the good part with him. I’m happy w the trade and would do it again in a heartbeat.
dsett75
Chicago has gotten alot more out of Moncada than Boston has in Sale….at least so far.
PeteWard8
Sale 100X the ballplayer Moncada is.
Sox should have kept him.
Thomas Walker
Pete The Clown, back again.
brandons-3
I don’t know, Sale lived up to the billing in 2017 and 2018 for the Red Sox, including a World Series trophy. I think both teams are happy with the trade and wouldn’t want a mulligan.
The extension for Sale is what dings the Red Sox, but shouldn’t be used when evaluating the original trade.
fermier
Chris Sale is a great player.. every 5-6 days! Moncada is there every day!
JeffreyChungus
I don’t know man, Sale’s 18.2 fWAR vs. Moncada’s 14.8 + Boston’s WS 2018 WS trophy tell a different story
clotty
And keep not winning? Because that’s what they were doing with him. He was an asset they traded for assets to start the rebuild. Smart move
JoeBrady
IMO, that is the worst possible outlook. As a RS fan, I like Sale, and even with the injury, I still like the contract.
But I think the WS will clearly wind up with more WAR. And that is not even the important part. The years of Sale’s original contract, 2017-2019, the WS had no chance of competing. They they averaged 67 wins. Now that they are in their window of contention, they will have Moncada & Kopech.
This is BB101..
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
I can see where Pete is coming from though. Players like Sale don’t come around all that often. That being said, they were never going to resign him. The White Sox maximized value no question with that trade. Took his team friendly contract, plus the value of Sale being one of the best to get a haul at the time. Consensus #1 prospect in Moncada, plus a highly touted pitching prospect in Kopech, one question mark prospect in Basabe, and a pitcher in Diaz who wasn’t much of anything to write home about. Seems like a wash to me so far. Both teams have gotten value out of that trade.
Dogbone
Sett, Boston got a World Series, did you forget?
jhomeslice
Sale pitched in a World Series for Boston, which they won. Moncada and Kopech won’t help the White Sox get to one, because their owner is too cheap to add the players they need to get to that level. Boston wins trade easily, World Series trumps all other comparisons.
ChiSox_Fan
Sox have 4th highest team salary in MLB baseball.
Cheap? Try again, idiot.
ChiSox_Fan
Jacka$$ !
Augusto Barojas
Adam Eaton was their opening day rightfielder, who they signed last winter instead of a real one because Reinsdorf is cheap. Their payroll was 55M less than the Astros, hence why the Sox looked like they did not belong on the same field in the playoffs.
BeeVeeTee
Adam Eaton was signed to platoon the outfield every few days to give guys a day off but injuries to Jimenez, Engle then to Robert had Eaton have to play everyday. Again, people have a short memory to what happened to the White Sox’s roster in the first few months of the season yet still won their division.
bucketbrew35
A 4 WAR player with positive defensive metrics is disappointing?
BeeVeeTee
It’s debatable to say Moncada has been a disappointment but he stepped up this year with both Jimenez and Robert out of the line up with timely hits to having high on base percentage with taking to drawing walks where batters around him got pitches to hit.
ChiSox_Fan
It’s gonna be Jean Segura or Tony Kemp.
ChiSoxCity
If that happens they might as well start printing “Detroit Tigers: 2022 AL Champs” t-shirts right now. There is no excuse for failing to address the glaring weaknesses of a contending team two years in a row. Especially when you give up your young starting 2B with now longterm plan to replace them.
dsett75
ChiSox City, What would you give up for Ketel Marte?? It’d have to be a lot to entice Arizona but he’d solve the 2B problem.
tigerfan4ever
@ChiSoxCity as great as it would be to us Tiger fans get realistic about those t shirts. Even with the additions of Rodriguez, Barnhart and Baez, they won’t overtake your Sox, the powerhouse teams in the East or the Astros.
dsett75
TigersFan, as a fellow Tigers fan I agree. I think we’re still about 6-7 games behind the Sox. And that’s assuming the BP will do as good as it did last season cuz it wasn’t bad at all, imho.
GarryHarris
The ChiSox need the whole team to collapse to fall that low. But if it did, it won’t be Tiger shirts. It could possibly be Royals if their MiLB pitchers pan out. Their position players are much farther along than the Tigers.
ChiSoxCity
Nah… the White Sox and Cubs front offices, in general have a knack for selective amnesia. Sox fans have seen this before. They get 3 or 4 good prospects on the roster, then sit around and wait for things to happen. Meanwhile, other teams are stacking the deck and fortifying their young rosters with elite players. That’s what a city with 2 big league teams in the #3 media market in the nation gets. Historically mediocre baseball.
Franco22
dsett75, Give them two error prone infielders, TA and Moncada. TA only played 120 games, Moncada hasn’t been a star at 2B or 3B. TA will want 200M year after next. Throw in a pitcher, that should do it.
detroitdave84
My Tigers might not overtake the CWS team this year, but they are no longer pushovers and every game will be meaningful & exciting. Carlos Correa is out there & he could play 2b but are you paying a 2b 300 million & 10 years? He turned down 275 million 10 years from Detroit. I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to turn that money down. I mean, 275 million!! If he doesn’t get $325 million, he blew it. If his ego is so desperate for 300 million, it doesn’t make sense. How is 25 million on top of 275 million going to change your life?
DarkSide830
it isnt gonna be Segura.
detroitdave84
The current free agent market has more players who can play 3b than 2b so I think the analysis is correct. With that said, they can always make a trade for a 2b the MLB level or a prospect who is ready.
Libpwnr
I bet old Al had interest in buying that winning Mega Millions ticket a few years ago, too. Golly-gee-shuckydarns that he chose not to. Life just isn’t fair, is it Ally=poo? ::(
CenterWingPolitics
With the Braves possibly losing Swanson next offseason, I wonder if they could do a Pache + a fringe arm like Touki, or someone for Arias
gson
At the Baseball Trade Values site, a deal for Arias would look like:
Braves get Gabriel Arias ($ 20.6 MM) and Oscar Mercado ($ 1.4 MM) = $ 22.0 MM
Guardians get William Contreras ($ 8.2 MM), Christian Pache ($ 7.5 MM), Brandon Shewmake ($ 4.9 MM and Kyle Wright ($ 0.5 MM) = $ 21.1 MM
Should the teams exchange medical records now?..
I didn’t think you’;d say yes, either..
Deleted_User
If both teams would say so then the trade is probably fair
Samuel
Cleveland has a fine defensive CF. He can hit some and has great speed. He’s better than Pache (who can’t hit). As for Contreras – Cleveland has their own version of a young C that will be up in 2022 in Bo Naylor. They have 4 guys in their system superior to Shewmake. Wright might interest them, but in Arias you’re talking about the key player they got in the Clevinger trade. He can play excellent SS as well as 2B and 3B, and he’s a pure hitter.
Mercado has been a bust so far, but if they’re going to give up Arias they’ll want something strong in return. The players you’re suggesting are no better than guys they have on their roster and in the high minors, and will just add to the 40 man roster problem they already have.. Arias is 21 years-old and has the potential to be a star. None of the players you’re suggesting from the Braves project as anything other than journeymen.
I’d suggest that if you want a SS from the Guardians look into Amad Roserio or Andrés Giménez, the 2 SS’s they got from the Mets.
gson
Having 70 AB’s at the ML level is surely an inadequate sampling to determine the offensive ability or inability of anyone.. Having an outfield that doesn’t permit any grass stains on balls hit in the air.. and a cannon arm to prevent runs from scoring on singles w/ a runner on second base is a good thing..
w/r to the return.. @ 6’4″ and 190, it’s likely SS Shewmake would be moved to 3B where his size, arm and reactions can be best utilized.. He’d be about about equal to anyone currently in the Guardians system if he is kept.. Otherwise, he has the kind of positive attitude and work ethic that EVERY TEAM IN MLB would find a home for.. win-win.. If this guy does work out, and there is no urgency, then one of Gimenez and Rosario could be used in a subsequent deal to a team looking for help at SS.
w/r to catching.. the adage that when you have enough pitching, go get more applies equally to catching.. Having Naylor and Lavastida along with Contreras would make the catching group a strength.. and that’s a good thing..
JoeBrady
I think some of the posters are a bit far afield in their analysis of Pache. He hit in AA at age 20, and in AAA at age 22. I think he will be a JBJ equivalent, and there is a lot of value in that. I doubt Atlanta would even trade him.
Cosmo2
Like whom, for example?
ChiSoxCity
No one ever thought “Quintana” was an ace, but please, go on with your bs narrative.
stevewpants
Who said anything about Quintana?
rocky7
Every Sox fan when the team was actively trying to trade him that’s who……every Sox fan constantly had ridiculous trade proposals regarding his “ACE” credentials!
rocky7
Ah, Chisoxcity…..we hope you’re being sarcastic when saying that…..every Sox fan raved that Quintana was really an ACE pitcher…..and was deserving of ridiculous returns in trade discussions!
ChiSoxCity
I don’t know any knowledgeable Sox fan who thought of Quintana as an ace caliber pitcher. Prior to his trade to the Cubs, I considered him a #2 or #3 on a good staff. Obviously the Cubs thought more of him, considering what they gave up to get him. But yeah, the Cubs got fleeced like they always do in trades. What else is new?
Sherm623
Always?
Rizzo. Good trade.
Hendricks. Good trade.
Arietta/Strop. Good trade.
And others. Think before you use words like never and always.
sufferforsnakes
Since the Tribe has Tyler Freeman, they should explore trading Arias for pitching.
ohiodevil 2
Or outfielders
Pezzicle
Freeman is a future 2B. Arias is a SS who can move to 3B if needed as he has a cannon for an arm.
They won’t overlap in any way.
sufferforsnakes
I still feel Freeman can play SS, and he’s a much better hitter.
OIC2021
Trade for ARIAS for multiple players…and outfielders
Since the Gs spent their whole 2021 draft on pitching. There’s no need for pitching
DarkSide830
cant live by one draft
AlienBob
I agree Cleveland should trade Arias. I have been advocating this for some time. The M’s could use him on their 26 man roster and both teams have enough prospects and MLB players to make a deal. Arias isn’t going to command the kind of return some are talking about, however. He isn’t even Cleveland’s top prospect. Consider what the M’s would get for Julio Rodriquez. You cannot have it both ways with MLB caliber talent and prospects that take the pressure off the 40 man roster.
I love his versatility in the infield. But he has yet to bat in MLB. He is going to be wasted in AAA this year. The longer Cleveland blocks his progress the less value he will have. If Seattle signs Trevor Story Cleveland can scratch one prospective trade partner. I have offered both outfielders and pitching, young and old. The Guardians need to decide what the want in return and the BTV isn’t it.
Yoyosoxsox
He is not there top prospect yet. He will be him or valera. He is good very good.
IronBallsMcGinty
I know Mark said “hypothetically” but I’d say no to Kyle Seager even on a one year deal. He’s not awful but I don’t think it’s a good fit.
detroitdave84
You mean all those homers & good defense for one year isn’t a good fit? It’s a fit, all day, every day, twice on Sunday.
Deleted_User
Preller just racking up the L’s with that trade
lavey
The wrong Gabriel Arias is linked in the story. It’s this one: baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=ari….
CalcetinesBlancos
Moncada likes playing 3B, so leave him there. It’s hilarious to hear Sox fans complain about him considering how many awful players we’ve had at the position. Also, 2B is such an easy position to fill. Figure it out Rick, although I’d rather they sign Suzuki and play Romy at 2B if they are crying poor.
Rsox
Jonathan Villar, Asdrubal Cabrera, Josh Harrison, or Donovan Solano all can be had on one year contracts. Brandon Burger or Romy Gonzalez represent the best in house options though Burger may be better suited for a corner spot
ChiSox_Fan
“Brandon” Burger?
You mean Jake Burger?
Rsox
Sorry. I got him confused with the Outfielder that used to play with the Royals
oscar gamble
Moncado struggled defensively at second and has been fine at third. No way the WS move him back to second.
ChiSoxCity
This is dumb. The White Sox are so close to a World Series Championship if they’d just bite the bullet and sign Story and Bryant. They might win two in a row with that roster. Then they can revert back to being cheap tightwads pretending to field competitive teams like they have for the last 80+ years.
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
That guarantees nothing but spending an absolute fortune. I don’t think they should stay pat by any means, but Story and Bryant!? You do know what team you’re talking about right? I’d eat my hat if they did that. Honestly though, I don’t think that’s utilizing their funds wisely since it is the miserly White Sox we’re talking about. They’re already pretty high in payroll for themselves historically. Maybe the best move is to play it out till the trade deadline for one of the areas of need? Story isn’t all that appealing in my opinion. Not for the money he will command. Sure he’s an upgrade, but who isn’t. I’d prefer they get a quality starter, and fill Right Field if they had to prioritize. Of course ideally they’ll have all of their needs addressed before they play ball. Time will tell.
OIC2021
They’re not close
Yoyosoxsox
We should have just kept madrigal.
Franco22
Sox need to shore up infield defense or go all out offensively. Moncada is error prone, TA stands flat footed and flips the ball to first and can’t turn a double play which goes unnoticed in the stats. Garcia is the only one that can hold his own at 2B,SS,3B. Considering TA is the least durable of MLB SS’s a one year deal for Kyle Seager might be needed for 3B. At least he could add some power to the lineup and help Jimenez by following him. Problem , Seager isn’t that great defensively but it isn’t that bad an idea. If Seattle wants and gets Story, then the Sox should trade for JP Crawford who can play 160 games and improve the infield defense. Give them TA, he’ll want over 200 M the year after next. JP’s contract is controlled for the next 3 years.
BeeVeeTee
Anyone who believes Moncada has been a big disappointment can debate it but tend to forget the importance he has at the plate. Moncada takes pitches where he draws walks to even having guys batting in front or behind get a good pitch to hit. Moncada was on of the top players with an on base percentage even though his average was below .300. Just imagine what can happen with Moncada having a full season with a healthy Jimenez and Robert batting around him!
People think its silly that I once brought up a potential trade involving the Yankees for Anderson possibly involving Torres along with another player and some prospects to solve the Yankees’ issues at short stop until Volpe is ready in three years when Anderson’s controllable contract is done. There has been rumblings about this while people on here think Anderson is the face of the White Sox which is wrong.
