The Yankees are known to be looking for center field help, and the club is considering options at the top of the free agent and trade markets. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi tweets that the Yankees and Mariners are among the teams interested in acquiring Bryan Reynolds from the Pirates, while on the free agent front, NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty reports that “Starling Marte is, at the very least, on the Yankees’ radar.”
This isn’t the first time that the Bronx Bombers have looked into Marte, as the Yankees had some talks with the Marlins about a potential swap back in July. Marte ended up being dealt to the A’s, while the Yankees instead augmented their outfield by acquiring Joey Gallo from the Rangers. As for Reynolds, New York joins the long list of teams who have reportedly asked about Pittsburgh’s All-Star center fielder in the last six months alone — the Astros, Guardians, Marlins, Brewers, and Braves have all been linked to Reynolds, and Seattle tried to deal for Reynolds prior to the trade deadline.
Aaron Hicks, of course, is ostensibly already the Yankees’ starting center fielder, so landing a proven everyday star like Marte or Reynolds would amount to a major sea change in the team’s outfield depth chart. However, Hicks has battled multiple injuries in recent years, including a wrist surgery in May that ended his 2021 season after 32 games. Hicks is expected to return to baseball activities in December and be ready for Spring Training, yet as GM Brian Cashman told reporters yesterday, “We just want to make sure we put the best team out there, so no guarantees right now for anybody….We just don’t have a pure center fielder at this point with the unknown of Aaron Hicks not playing for a while.”
If Hicks is healthy and Marte, Reynolds, or another notable starting outfielder was added, New York would suddenly be awash in outfield options. Aaron Judge obviously has right field locked down, Giancarlo Stanton would play every day as either the DH or in the corners, and the likes of Gallo, Miguel Andujar, Clint Frazier, and Estevan Florial are also on hand.
In the event of a Reynolds trade, it isn’t out of the question that any of those latter three names could be part of the very big trade package the Pirates would demand in any Reynolds deal. None would be headliners in that trade package, however, as Andujar, Frazier, and Florial have all seen their star prospect status dim over the last couple of years. Gallo or Hicks probably wouldn’t have much trade appeal for the rebuilding Pirates, though either veteran could potentially be flipped in another deal if the Yankees were looking to create room, even if New York would likely have to eat a good portion of the $41MM left on Hicks’ contract.
Should the Yankees balk at Pittsburgh’s asking price for Reynolds, signing Marte wouldn’t come with any prospect cost, even if he might require something in the neighborhood of a four-year, $80MM contract. This type of spending shouldn’t necessarily be beyond a Bombers team that ducked under the luxury tax line last season, even if the Yankees additionally gave out some big dollars to address their needs at shortstop, first base, or perhaps in the rotation.
Joe says...
Cue the Yankees don’t have the prospect capital to acquire anyone.
seamaholic 2
It’s not that they don’t have the capital, it’s that other teams interested in a stud like Reynolds will be able to offer more.
Joe says...
That equates to they don’t have the capital.
MurderersRow27
They have the capital to acquire basically anyone they wanted to though… it’s not a question as to if they have the capital or not, it’s a question of will Cashman part with the capital it would take, to acquire a specific player?
JoeBrady
They have the capital to acquire basically anyone they wanted to though…
==================================
That same thing could be said for every team. The NYY farm took a hit on the Taillon, Gallo, and Rizzo trades. It’s all a question of how deep he wants to go.
From a (non-RS) fans perspective, my question would be: Wasn’t the payroll cap dip kind of designed to now put the farm off-limits?
Joe says...
My comment was directed to the usual trolls who will always get on here and say the Yankees couldn’t get Elvis Andrus for their entire farm system even if they included Aaron Judge and paid his whole salary. Or the other trolls who always say what Yankees fans expect from trades.
For the record I think the cost of Reynolds will be understandably sky high and not worth pursuing.
Rsox
Actually the Yankees could probably have Andrus for a used rosin bag
JoeBrady
IRT the Yankee fans trade expectations, that came from the 2019 season, with spiked ball. Urshela, Tauchman, Frazier, Ford, and a few others had big seasons. No small amount of Yankee fans thought they could acquire anyone and everyone for those guys.
It’s kind of like with Mets22 and his expectation that the 2021 didn’t even need to be played out. That sort of sticks with you for a while.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Cash is a hugger not a spender though. So either way it’s a probably not something we will see.
Joe says...
I agree that Cashman hates to part with the top prospects Ducky, but they do have the prospects to get whomever they want. And hopefully Cash has seen he needs to pull the trigger sometimes after missing out on moving Andujar and Frazier when they had value. Though I can see his point that if they played up to their expectations, they would want to keep them as a part of the team.
Yankee Clipper
Yankees obviously have the capital. They’ve outbid teams for other players and have been unwilling to part with that same capital, ie, Castillo.
Ducky/Joe: Although I would love to have Reynolds, I don’t think they should part with the talent it would take to acquire him. We could fill that position and save the trade assets for another position of need. The only way we part with that many prospects is for a position that cannot be filled through FA, imho. For me, those would be catcher (although it won’t cost as much) and starting pitcher.
That is, of course, unless the price has dropped for Reynolds.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Ducky Buckin Fent- not so sure my friend. I definitely think the Yankees could sign your boy Marte for 3 or 4 years. It really depends on what kind of $ he is looking for. Thinking $12-15 annually, he seems worth it. Bryan Reynolds of Brentwood High School here in NY will cost a fortune. Probably Torres, Deivi, and probably my boy Abreu. So that is less likely to happen. Only way the Yankees will give up Schmidty, is maybe in a Olson or Castillo trade.
Big Poison
It would start with Dominguez. And Volpe. Plus more. Pirates are building for 2022…
Big Poison
Aren’t *
rememberthecoop
I guarantee you that Dominguez and Volpe are both off-limits.
rememberthecoop
Marte is the only true FA CF so that should drive his price up much higher than the 12 – 15 range. As the article says, I’m guessing 30 per year or more.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@coop. If those 2 players are off limits then the Pirates will surely field better offers from many other teams. Bryan Reynolds has HIGH value he will bring top tier prospects and not a quantity over quality type haul.
Ducky Buckin Fent
@coop.
@McGriff has the measure on this one.
BTV has a trade value of Dominguez at 25 mil. Volpe at 46.4 mil. Reynolds = 85 mil. Trade *starts* with *both* of them. & Yanks would need to add a bit more.
Now I think the Yanks have enough. But: it would absolutely gut our farm system. Which makes me conclude Cash just would not do it.
Joe says...
Ducky, one thing I do read into Cashman’s comments over the last couple of days is by saying they need a centerfielder, your boy Gardy probably won’t be back. Especially if they hang on to Hicks.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Oh, I know, Joe.
Helluva run. Good Yankee. & he squeezed every last bit out of his ability. He never gave a game, out, or even a pitch away. Ever. That alone endears him to me. Such a grinder. He’s pretty high up on my forever-cool-with-me list.
But, yeah. He gone. I got through Tanaka last winter. It’ll be harder. However, I will make it through GGBG this winter, too.
Joe says...
I gotta ask, what is GGBG?
Ducky Buckin Fent
A lot of things. But the most common is/was Good Game Brett Gardner (also Gold Glove, Grit & Grind, etc).
Joe says...
I honestly thought it was Good God Brett Gardner
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hey, that works too!
I’m sure we are both reliving a grounder to second base right now. Trust me. There are a few things about Gardy that I definitely will *not* miss, Joe. Not much of an arm either, for example.
I just have always appreciated how he goes about his day at work. My grandpere told me to watch how Roy White played the game. He held him up as an example of the “right way”. GGBG has always struck as pretty similar.
BLIN7Y
These are the Pirates we’re talking about. We don’t know what they will want for him. D. Garcia, Medina, Peraza, and Florial might be enough and they take Andujar as a throw in.
Just throwing that out there.

Then they don’t get Reynolds… Even those two as headliners shouldn’t excite pirates fans. The hope is Dominguez turns into a player like Reynolds when the pirates already have him
TheTrotsky
Dude lol… They aren’t taking spare parts for Reynolds bro.
Darryl Rose
I’m a Yankees fan and that isn’t happening. You don’t get an all star cost controlled center fielder for 5 pieces where only Peraza is likely to be an impactful player and even he may be just a utility middle infielder. Prospects are a huge gamble.
I speak the truth
Then the Yankees won’t be getting Reynolds.
JR513
2022 highly unlikely there building then they don’t have the pitchers. more like 2026 or 2027. Pirates can’t afford Reynolds he won’t be around if they even win it’s just a tactic.he will be a yankee or on another team soon.
Mendoza Line 215
JR-The Pirates had a three year run of contention, three years of decent teams, and three years of bad teams. It is time for even a small market team to get back to being decent..They need to turn it around this year and win at least 75 games, then to compete by 2024 for division titles.Reynolds will still be around during those years.
bucincharlotte
Both will need to be included along with more for Reynolds
bucincharlotte
The new Pirate GM has dominated all trades!
bucincharlotte
Pirates will take your top two prospects for Newman you need a SS!
CalcetinesBlancos
Definitely won’t land him with the usual laughable scrubs Yankees fans always mention. This isn’t Joey Gallo lol.
Yankee Clipper
It’s not Yankees fans that mention those ‘scrubs’ it’s the jealous Yankees-haters that do.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’ve only been posting here for a little over a year.
But all those “Frazier for Trout” takes absolutely never come from Yankee fans. No, it’s the other end of the spectrum that churns out those particular posts. With amazing volume & regularity.
& let’s face it. The basic homer template for any & all fan bases is:
We trade: crappy players.
We get: good players.
That is hardly something endemic to Yankee fans.
CalcetinesBlancos
No I agree. Yankees fans and Cubs fans are equally guilty of that stuff.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
For 4 years of control over Bryan Reynolds if I’m the Pirates Jasson Dominguez has to be included.
chopper2hopper
More like, cue Yankee fans “no way Reynolds is worth our top prospects.” I still remember the days of reading how great clint frazier was on these messageboards. He was the next trout to some on here, didn’t you hear?
SWH*1972*
Seem to recall Dominguez being the next Trout. Frazier was known for his tremendous bat speed
Ducky Buckin Fent
The national media dubbed Dominguez as “the next Mike Trout”, not the Yankees. All we did is sign him.
& I had pretty good seats when the Yanks were in town & Frazier *does* have amazing bat speed. My girlfriend – who is not even close to a baseball fan – could even see it.
Yankee Clipper
Chopper 2 hopper: You’re right, we ARE saying he’s not worth it. But, the operative word is different. Where you see he’s not worth our ‘top’ prospects, we say he’s not worth ‘all’ our prospects.
Big difference, but he’s not. Reynolds is incredible, outstanding, top-tier; and we backwater Yankees fans sincerely hope and pray Dominguez can one day be as good as Reynolds (or, of course, Frazier).
But he’s not worth blowing the * entire * farm system on…. See, you’re kind of right, in your own way.
Uruguay77
Are you HIGH?
Ducky Buckin Fent
Oh, gosh no.
I haven’t touched anything harder than bourbon since college. & that was mostly just my junior year.
User 1471943197
Brian Reynolds isnt going anywhere…these rumors are absurd
imissbaseball2020
As a Bucco’s fan. That’s a hard “NO” for any of them players. We are rebuilding (I know for like the millionth time) but those players won’t help us take the next step. We have seen this buy in bulk move and it doesn’t work.
Perksy
For Reynolds they’d prob have to give up one of the big SS in their system. Or Dominguez.
Rsox
Not or Dominguez. It would be one of the big SS prospects and Dominguez. The Yankees gave up four players for 2 seasons of Jameson Taillon last winter. Reynolds is coming off of a very good year and has four years of team control. It’s not out of the question to say the Yankees would also have to include some multiple combination of Gil/Schmidt/Garcia/Florial+Volpe/Peraza or Sweeney and Dominguez
bucsfan0004
The Pirates wouldn’t want any of those players that already have service time. They did very well with the return for Taillon. I really like Roansy Contreras.
I see the SS prospects the Yankees have as being totally expendable if/when they sign a FA SS to a mega-deal. Dominguez and a SS is a big ask for Reynolds but if the SS is blocked and Reynolds is exactly what the Yankees need to win now, why not do it?
MurderersRow27
I would 100% offer Peraza as a headliner in a potential Reynolds trade, and I would possibly consider Volpe as well (although I would say I’m definitely leaning towards no currently on that). He has 4 years of team control left via arbitration, is a 26 yr old, switch hitting, All-Star caliber player. He would be a HUGE upgrade to this roster. The Yankees have decent SS depth in the minors, even after considering Volpe and Peraza… and they’ve been rumored as leading the Roderick Arias (#1 international prospect, is a SS, and has the same overall prospect ranking; 55, that both Volpe and Peraza currently have (per MLB). Adding a talent such as Arias would make up for losing a talent such as Peraza.
Samuel
I read about the Twins 4 can’t miss SS’s in the minors for 4 years.
Last year they signed an aging, regressing at an accelerated rate Andrelton Simmons to play SS for them.
Darryl Rose
Exactly!!!
A guy tearing up A-AAA who is a can’t miss may never make it or become Tyler wade and just be destined as a utility guy who has no bat and a decent glove and is the 24 1/2 player on a roster.
Deivi Garcia was thought to be another Pedro Martinez. Now he can’t throw a strike and in a few years he may be selling vacuums door to door.
elmedius
I bet Chris Archer is available if the Bucs are willing to offer up Reynolds or Hayes plus a few prospects.
bucsfan0004
Chris Archer was a target previously when he had a contract that included many team options at a low price. Your snark isn’t even funny, just makes you sound uninformed
CalcetinesBlancos
Yeah those names mentioned are laughable.
Darryl Rose
Which names? Volpe? Perraza? Dominguez? Gil?
Florial is a stretch but the others are very highly regarded prospects.
stymeedone
Agree that the players mentioned are not anything a rebuilding team would want. Theres enough “fans” suggesting that Sanchez or Andujar have any type of value, without the writers here speculating that they do.
Darryl Rose
Why would a rebuilding team not want highly regarded prospects who vary from MLB ready to 2 years away?
Samuel
Because the Yankees “highly regarded prospects” seldom amount to anything for more than a year or so.
Want me to list a dozen-and-a-half from the past 5 years?
Right now the Yankees are fielding 2 starting position players from their farm system – Judge and Sanchez. I like Montgomery as a starter – they brought in all their others. They have a few bullpen guys – the back end guys they paid for in free agency.
Yankees farm system players are overpublicized and constantly underperform.
JR513
The pirates can’t afford Reynolds he will be elsewhere soon
Yankee Clipper
A lot of great takes in this thread. Except the two haters saying the top prospects aren’t worth anything. And again, it’s a non-Yankees fan inserting Sanchez into the trade proposal and saying Yankees fans are proposing it when we clearly aren’t.
RSox is dead-on right. Pirates would want Dominguez, Volpe, and a top pitcher just to start, imho. Peraza would likely be included as well and whomever else. It would completely gut our system and bring thats to a completely different level. I love Reynolds’ skills, but we can’t route our farm like that.
Bucsfan is correct and obviously intelligent because they would do that trade knowing they would take the Yankees to the bank. And I agree with you on Contreras; I think, if tallion stays healthy, it was a good trade and both teams made out well.
JerryBird
So is Pittsburgh stuck in an eternal cycle of trading young talent for younger prospects and never really trying to build a winning team? This has gone on for quite some time. You would think they’d take a shot at competing more sooner than later or is it just my imagination…
I feel bad for Pirates’ fans. Pittsburgh was once a very proud and successful franchise.
iverbure
Hence why they asked for Julio Rodriguez and plus from the Mariners. That translates to them basically saying they aren’t trading him
bucincharlotte
Agree they will only trade him for top prospects
Mendoza Line 215
The Pirates have not traded young players for prospects until the last couple of years. Before they traded good players on the verge of free agency, and received good young players in return. How do you think that they got Reynolds? Those trollers who thought that the Archer trade was representative are like all trollers- they do not know what they are talking about.
User 1471943197
Bingo Mendoza I couldn’t agree more with your post
CalcetinesBlancos
Imagine being a Pirates fan and seeing them trade Reynolds. 6 WAR in 2021. Not even arb eligible until 2023. I would literally find a new team to root for.
bucsfan0004
I’m all for them trading Reynolds. For a haul. Its going to take a long time to develop/acquire the pitching necessary to compete seriously anyway, so why not get players who will make an impact for when that time will be. You have to understand that because the owner is a cheapskate, Reynolds would never make it to Arb 2/3 or even his walk year. So trading two years of Reynolds production for 6 years of multiple prospects when Reynolds value is the highest makes the most sense.
JoeBrady
bucsfan000418 mins ago
I’m all for them trading Reynolds.
===================================
There could be other reasons for trading Reynolds.
First off, as you mention, you might get a haul for him.
Secondly. PT might be selling high. This is not like he was a top-10 draft pick and #15 prospect. SF certainly didn’t hold him in high esteem. It’s not impossible to see him revert to his 2020 stats.
Mendoza Line 215
Joe-His 2020 stats were only indicative of a pandemic year, and are only 40% of one at that.
Reynolds is a very very good player, and the high amount of interest in him by numerous GMs only bears that out.
The fact that he was not a high draft choice,or that the Giants traded him,has nothing to do with how good he is.He is another McCutcheon for the Pirates, and it behooves them to sign him to an extension.
Prospects are only that-prospects.They are meaningless until they prove themselves at the ML level, and then only if it lasts for several years.Even the best are never sure things,
Reynolds is as close to a sure thing as you will ever get.
Treehouse22
Not a chance the Pirates trade Reynolds until after June 18 because that’s Bryan Reynolds Bobblehead day at PNC. The Pirates would not spend that much money for nothing…15,000 plastic toys is quite an expenditure.
CalcetinesBlancos
I mean sure, everyone has a price where you can pry a star player away. But baseball is a business and you don’t want to permanently alienate a fanbase.
bucsfan0004
They alienated me when they traded Neil Walker for a bum pitcher to save money after a 98 win season. Other fans joined along the way over the next few years. The fan base is permanently alienated – they can’t even draw 18k on a weekend in the summer. But what am i going to do? Pick another team? I hate all the other sports, too.
I speak the truth
I’m a Pirates fan and I have no problem with them trading Walker for a starting pitcher. I was actually happy with the trade but I’m not an irrational yinzer (not saying you are). Neil had one maybe two solid, not great or even good, years after he left Pittsburgh. He was nowhere near worth the 15 million a year he wanted. Factoring in that they had Josh Harrison for second and the Pirates needed a starting pitcher, it was a trade worth making. Unfortunately Jon Neise was bad and because Neil’s a local boy everyone acts like it was terrible trade. It’s nothing like the Chris Archer deal.
bucsfan0004
@i speak
Actually, the trades you mentioned were very similar. Both Archer and Niese were low cost starters with a series of team options, and both were overpays. I’m not a yinzer either, but anyone knows that a substantial portion of fans are, so trading Walker was stupid both from a baseball and business sense. Those yinzers help sell out the stadium on a random Tuesday night vs Oakland, so why upset them? The correct baseball move was to let Walker play out his contract and walk, not trade him for an extra pitcher the Mets had laying around.
I speak the truth
I think you’re severely overvaluing Neil Walker if you say he’s an overpay for Jon Neise. Neil was basically done when he left Pittsburgh. Unfortunately Neise was done too. It was basically an even trade… no where close to the Archer atrocity.
Mendoza Line 215
Bucsfan-The Pirates were following their standard operating procedure in trading Walker. He had rejected a contract near to the three year contract amounts that he eventually received from the Mets and the Yankees. He missed 35% of the time for those three years.
Niece was the quintessential fourth starter with the Mets and that is what the Pirates needed to replace Charlie Morton, who was always injured.Niese just so happened to get injured quickly and basically was useless after that.
Hindsight is always 20-20.
The poster who you responded to actually lives up to his “pen” name.
bucsfan0004
Niese was the Mets 6th starter. They had 5 other starters slotted in and had no use for him.
Robertowannabe
Bingo. The trade was a second baseman with injury issues for a pitcher also with injury issues. Both had injuries again the year after the trade. There are many of us Pirates fans who were not upset that Neil was traded when he was.. They offered Neil a contract for less money that he wanted. He was going to leave as a FA. Obviously, the rest of the league was not offering anything any better than Jon Niese. Was better than losing him to FA for nothing at all.
Robertowannabe
Agree with you whole heartedly about the Walker/Niese trade. Jury still out on how truly bad the Archer trade was. He was the top pitcher on the market when the Bucs traded for him. That is why they paid what the paid to get him. Glasnow has been hurt more than not since joining the Rays. Meadows had the white hot start to 2019 and has been average to slightly above average since. Baz may still make the deal an overpay if he performs anywhere close to how he did in the minors when he he gets to the Bigs to stay.
Darryl Rose
Just still out on the archer trade? It was brutal!!!
Meadows has an .822 career OPS. In an off season he had 29 doubles and 23 home runs.
Baz looks terrific and Glasnow when healthy is a legitimate Cy Young contender.
Darryl Rose
After re reading your comment I guess I misinterpreted what you meant. In which case yes, time will still show us how truly bad it was.
Right now it’s unimaginably one sided but could get even worse over the years.
Robertowannabe
Thank you. A bit more of what Went into my thinking. Meadows built the ..822 OPS on the torrid start to 2019. Never said he was garbage but he is not a hall of farmer either. What you said about Glasnow is basically true. He has been great when healthy. You have left out the fact that he has not been healthy much at all. Baz looks great but has only pitched a handful of games above AA. I did say that if he can carry that to bigs it will make the trade look horrible. If Glasnow can regain health and keep it it and if Meadows can get some consistently to his game and be able to have solid numbers over the course of a season and not have 2 moths great play paired with 4 months of below average play then yes, it will be a brutal trade. Right now it is bad trade. Depending what the 3 players still playing (Archer of course is not) do in the next couple of years will determine if it is meh, bad, or one of the worst ever to be made. That is why I said that the jury is still out.
Darryl Rose
Hey man if that “logic” makes you feel better go for it. But all three could get hit by a bus and it’s still a brutal trade.
Glasnow and meadows are already 10.6 war and all three are young and talented.
Meadows doesn’t need to go to the hall of fame. If he contributes anything positive the gap just widens.
Baz was terrific in his brief MLB starts. His career is just starting.
You got sweet nothing from archer. He was 6-12 with a 4.92 era and now is back in Tampa.
I’m not sure why it’s so difficult to simply acknowledge what is obvious to the rest of us.
It was a brutal trade. That happens sometimes. GMs make decisions in the moment that looks logical and sometimes hindsight shows us it can be a career defining mistake.
Mendoza Line 215
Darryl-I agree with both Go and you.Posters on here have consistently overrated the three players traded. The problem is that the Pirates only got one player back, and he ended up being very bad.I was very surprised that the Rays paid him $6M this year,so he must have still been held in high esteem.Go is a Pirate fan,and he remembers the inconsistencies in Meadows and especially Glasgow before they were traded.I always questioned the inclusion of Baz even with his control problems as I think that the Rays got away with that one.But we were used to the trolls saying this trade was the worst one ever made a year after it was made. They evidently never heard of Frank Robinson and Babe Ruth. The problem is when you only get one player back and he is basically a zero then any return divided by zero is infinity.Just look at his next to last statement and he is basically agreeing with you in that it was a bad trade but we still must see how bad it was.
Jim Bibby
yeah, i totally agree. Bucs OF after the break in 2022 is gonna have Swaggerty, Mitchell, CSN, Fraizer, Bae, and O Cruz. Id rather get a couple premium SP prospects for 2023-2027+ window. No chance Bucs pay arb 3/arb 4 on BRey anyhow. Take the overpay if you can get it.
Treehouse22
Prospects…prospects…prospects…prospects………At some point, you have to consider filling out a big league lineup card with guys who have demonstrated that they can play. Bryan Reynolds can play and should be a player the Bucs FO builds around. They’ve got him for 3 more seasons and, I hope, a couple more after that, if they sign him to an extension. The Bucs will be thrilled if just two of those minor league outfielders can play at the big league level. It’s a near certainty that some of them will not pan out. I feel like Cruz will, but who knows. Reynolds is one that did pan out. If you’re building a team with prospects, keep the small number who pan out.
Mendoza Line 215
Budget- I am glad someone else gets this other than me and maybe a couple of other posters.I agree that they should build their team around Reynolds,Hayes, and Bednar. They have some complimentary players, and some of the minor league players should turn out well. They need these very good players to establish a team identity and be stars on that team.Hayes will never be a better hitter than his father but he has a chance to be a great fielder.
I would not trade Reynolds for anything but a team’s four best prospects, and that is with a team that has a very good system,Even the best prospects do not turn out to be very good more than 40-50% of the time. And half the pitchers don’t because of arm injuries.
Prospects are just that, prospects, until they prove themselves in the major leaguers.Pirate fans need to see consistency. And they should thank NH for getting such a fine player as Reynolds in trade.
Treehouse22
AMEN!
Treehouse22
Correction: The Bucs have Reynolds for 4 more seasons (thru 2025), plus, hopefully two more after that with an extension. I’m hoping the new CBA will encourage players to sign extensions of this type so they can make more money in their early years, instead of making most of it after they’ve started to decline.
Mendoza Line 215
Budget- Bingo again!

Ducky Buckin Fent
Haven’t been on the board for a couple days as I had some things to attend to way up north.
Going through a couple days of articles, I see there’s also some interest in Rizzo. Rizzo & Marte are my top free agent targets for the Yanks. I just can’t see Cashman parting with what it would take to land a guy like Reynolds.
But: we all know the man can sign a check with the best of ’em. Which leads to Marte. He sure checks a lot of boxes for this squad.
mlbnyyfan
Yankees need to stop dealing with Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh screwed the Yankees by sending Cole to Houston instead. The Pirates are dead to me. I don’t think Yankees will spend on Marte. All the reason keeping Greg Allen would of been a good thing

I can’t see any value in Andujar or Frazier. They have both played themselves into back up type players. Hicks is one of THE most overrated players in baseball. He has had plenty
of opportunities to establish himself, be it injuries or inability, he just hasn’t got anything to offer to a winning team. The Yankees would be better off with him on the bench, in the minors or dump him, eating his salary along the way.
Benjamin560
Bryan Reynolds would look great in Seattle. It’d kill two birds with one stone. We’d have our CF and our left handed hitter. What this article fails to mention is that the Mariners are also very much in this conversation. Here’s Jon Morosi’s quote from this morning.
“#Pirates All-Star CF Bryan Reynolds is drawing significant interest in the trade market, with the #Yankees and #Mariners among potential suitors, but the team feels no pressure to move him. He won’t be a free agent until after 2025, and an extension remains possible. @MLBNetwork”
Must’ve missed that one MLBTR huh?
Treehouse22
If the Pirates trade Reynolds, there goes their last 57 fans.
jvent
They always seem to go after the same players the Mets do , damn you Yankees
JimmyForum
If the Cardinals were smart, they would try trade Cinderella Bader to NY before he turns back into a pumpkin.

Fair trade: Schmidt, Dominguez, Frazier for Reynolds
Yankee fan trade proposal: Garcia, Frazier, Andujar, Voit for Reynolds + Kuhl
mlbnyyfan
@Metsin7. What are you drinking if you think that’s a fair trade. Let’s a make a deal Stanton for Lindor. One bad contract for another
Joe says...
Mets fan: They should just give us Reynolds because we’re the Mets.
billysbballz
Yanks are not trading Dominguez, it makes no sense to do so. Yes Reynolds is an all star and that is fair value but Yanks shouldn’t do that! No way should they even consider it especially when Marte is out there for money alone. Byron Buxton is also out there and they should see what his cost will be but if healthy he can be an all star talent.
Metsin777
Dominguez has done nothing and Schmidt is always hurt. Reynolds is arguably a top 2 Center fielder in the game and is controllable for the next 4 years. A lottery ticket (Dominguez) and an injury prone pitcher is enough to pay for one of the best CFs in the game
billysbballz
Yes it maybe but to say Dominguez has not done anything is ridiculous and bias. He’s still very young and only had half season in pro ball and had some ups and downs but didn’t look over matched. Bad take by a bias Mets fans.
Yankee Clipper
What would your GM propose?
Oooohhhh, that’s right, you don’t have one – they’ve all refused.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Damn, Clipper.

Dominguez, Schmidt and Frazier has a trade value of 31.8
Reynolds 85
If the Yankees added Montgomery 25 and Peraza then it would be closer but still not likely. Pirates probably have lots of guys they need to protect for rule 5 so they want quality or quantity.
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
NONE of those are ‘fair deals’ unless you’re the Yankees…. Pirates would be fleeced by far. Dominguez isn’t this all world prospect everyone wants him to be, he’s just the only prospect the Yankees actually have worth feeding to the media..
Joe says...
Dominguez isn’t even the Yankees number one prospect. But as a Pirates fan, you have enough problems so you do you.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yankee guys are a bit feisty this morning.
clrrogers
I’m sure teams are interested, but there’s no reason for the Pirates to trade Reynolds. He’s cheap and still has four years of control. He won’t be moved unless some team is desperate enough to make a ridiculous overpay.
stymeedone
He won’t be moved unless someone offers fair value! If you consider that an overpay, so be it.
Mario93
4-80 mill for Marte? Way overpay.
sidewinder11
Volpe, Waldichuk, Vasquez and a lower level prospect for Ketel Marte?
Rsox
Diamondbacks are looking for Outfielders and it sounds like Marte’s preference is to go back to 2B so not sure if it would be worth acquiring a player to play a position he doesn’t want to play
iverbure
The Yankees would actually be giving up too much value in that trade which is surprising.
towinagain
Yankees pursuing guys, makes others on their team expendable. Padres and Yankees match up as trade partners
Gwynning
How so? As in, whom for whom?
mlb1225
The Pirates wanted the Marlins top 3 prospects at the trade deadline. That was Max Meyer, Sixto Sanchez, and Edward Cabrera by FanGraphs (all are top 40 prospects) or Kahlil Watson, Cabrera, and Meyer (all are top 30 prospects). Any trade involving Reynolds better start by making the Chris Archer trade look like a square deal.
Rsox
No matter how hard you try that trade will never be “square”. The only solace Pirates fans can take away from that deal is that Archer did nothing in his return to Tampa
Fernando P
The only solace Pirates can take in that trade is the GM Neil Huntington is gone.
iverbure
Yeah Reynolds isn’t going anywhere. Those type of prospects aren’t getting traded these days and certainly not two of them.
mlb1225
The last time I can think of those kind of prospects being moved was for Chris Sale, a consistent top 5 Cy Young finisher. The Yankees haven’t traded a prospect in the consensus top 20-10 range since Jesus Montero.
piratesfan26
Right? It would have to be like the Archer deal for the Pirates to even consider it. Seattle and the Marlins both tried hard to get him and the Pirates didn’t budge. So there’s no way in hell the Yankees can pull that off since they have a weaker system than both of those clubs.
LordD99
I see. We’re at that point when players’ agents attach the New York Yankees to their clients to drive up prices and the media plays along.
stymeedone
Just watched the NYY drop a player and sign him back to save $500K, and at the trade deadline had to have the other teams pick up the contracts. Currently not a team driving up prices.
Darryl Rose
They saved a million. Texas has to pay his buy out.
acmeants
I hope the Pirates keep Reynolds. Bird in the hand…
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
hahahahaha….hahahahaaha cue the Yankees can trade these 3 no name prospects and get Reynolds cuz they’re the Yankees!!
To even MENTION Gallo, Andujar, or Hicks like the Pirates need some other teams washed up players on their roster is hysterical… they have enough of their own prospects with more lust than shine now.
whyhayzee
Isn’t Marte a cheater? 80 game suspension in his past? Interesting to be rewarded for that. I wonder if that’s happened before. (I know, I’m being a jerk.)
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yes.
He was suspended for PED use. So: pretty much served his punishment, hoss. But I do like all of you pure-as-fresh-snow fellas who repeatedly chastise any/everyone whom ever made a mistake.
Thankfully for Marte, most regular fellas have made mistakes themselves. Meaning: we are not so quick to judge. & when a guy has been punished we are free to move on.
Sadly, it appears the penance one must pay for being perfect is to live in a state of perpetual anger over the fact that the rest of us screw up sometimes. I coin this phenomenon “The Perfect Man’s Burden” & consider myself lucky to be able to avoid it, uh?
whyhayzee
Used to run with a guy who wound up in jail for his mistakes. Front page news, even national news. Have run with him since he got out and he’s trying to help others stay out. But it’s a brutal cost.
Marte’s transgression was small potatoes. He’s been punished. But he gets to go right back to what he was doing and make even more money?
Ducky Buckin Fent
I have been to county a time or two, myself. Brig as well. & not as a visitor. Was never any type of national news though. & being an officer…well, that never made my stays any easier, bro.
So what is your solution?
If he played in the NFL, he wouldn’t have been punished in the first place. I guess I just don’t understand/agree with all of this reluctance to allow someone who screwed up & accepted (& served!) his discipline to move on with his life.
What more do you want, man?
For real. Ya know?
whyhayzee
I guess my problem is more with my friend then. He has not been able to do much but deliver flowers, Chinese food, and drive people to the airport. He will never have an income unless he somehow completely reinvents himself. When he first came out he was hounded by the media and immediately lost a couple of jobs. Now it’s old news. They leave him alone. I’m much happier if people pay the price and are able to move on with their lives. So I guess it’s fine for Marte, certainly fine for you. I just wish it was fine for my friend.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Well now, it’s pretty hard to argue against that. & for me, I’ve no problem (& indeed encourage) second chances.
But, as a parent, I’ve a much different (& indeed straight tyrannical) viewpoint
around pedophiles. Hard to keep any kind of moral high ground around that for me.
Academics & intellectuals can discuss “situational ethics”. But for us regular fellas that = “working with what ya got”. I have commission only sales guys. Some of them have…checkered pasts. I would recommend your friend look into a gig like that?
whyhayzee
Appreciate the advice, he might do well at sales and maybe that’s his best direction. He’s got a special needs child so he’s pretty motivated to make a living. Agree on pedophiles, I used to deliver newspapers to a neighbor who became one later on. Kind of creeps me out now how friendly he was to me.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I get it though. Served with a couple guys that just can’t stay out of trouble (& jail & prison for that matter) since we got back. Breaks my heart a little bit.
I try to be enlightened or whatever. & generally speaking I do…well, ok for the most part. I hope. But that kind of stuff with kids gets me seeing red, man.
Generally speaking, my best sales guys are quite simply the hardest working of the lot. So effort is (still) rewarded in our field. Full commission sales is the industry standard for what we do. It’s not for everyone. But my guys do pretty well financially. Could be his ticket.
Fernando P
The only solace Pirates can take in that trade is the GM Neil Huntington is gone.
bobtillman
Yankee fans keep on believing they can get quality players for four members of the Rob Refsnyder Hall of Fame.
The Bucs need to keep Reynolds at least for another year. (1) We don’t know that 2021 wasn’t a mirage and (2) he’s their “guy”; ya, there’s some young talent but Reynolds is their center piece. If he comes out strong early, he’s worth more on July 31 than he is now.
rocky7
Hey Bob….why don’t you give up all the cute mentions of Rob Refsnyder, stop trolling the Yankees at every opportunity and come back down to earth.
In reality, none of us that comment really know what teams really value that are either looking to acquire or give up to make a trade happen….Talking about Reynolds as if he’s Babe himself isn’t going to justify either making a trade or not with Pittsburg. There have always been plenty of ballplayers who play well for small market teams that don’t ascend to the playoffs with any frequency or at all but when put on big pressure (media frenzy) stages like Boston, New York, LA, etc and just don’t produce at the same levels as when they played for a team like Pitt…..no disparage to Pirate fans here!
In the past, it always seemed that Pittsburg would always ask the Yankees for more that they would be willing to settle for from other clubs….I would rate the possibility of getting Reynolds at almost 0 just for that reason….Pittsburg will ask for the moon and the Yankees will probably say no.
User 1471943197
Hey rockyrockhead it’s PITTSBURGH not PITTSBURG
mike156
33 year-old center fielder? I know, Marte still looks good, but very few centerfields can sustain the athleticism needed to play the position in their mid thirties.
Joe says...
38 year old Brett Gardner handled it just fine (defensively that is), so it’s not a crazy thought.
JoeBrady
I absolutely cannot see Marte working out for anyone, with a 4-year contract.
Ronk325
Bryan Reynolds seems to be the new Whit Merrifield for trade rumors in the sense of being a good player on a rebuilding small market team who tons of teams want but isn’t really available
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@ronk. Royals really should trade Whit. I don’t see the Royals having the pitching to contend anytime soon. Whit has 2 cheap years of control and will be 33 years old entering the 2022. Get the best package now. I don’t think Whit will ever have higher value than right now.
Ronk325
If the Royals were going to trade Merrifield it would have happened 2 or 3 years ago when his value was through the roof. At this point they won’t get an offer they deem suitable and honestly they could be somewhat competitive in the AL Central next year considering how weak the competition is
JR513
He’s available pirates can’t help themselves
stretch123
Marte would be good but I think they Yankees would be better off getting Chris Taylor. That way they can use him in the infield if needed too or if Hicks comes back and is solid in CF. Would allow for Taylor to become a true UT player on a team that needs at least one, if not two higher contact hitters. With that being said, Yanks should also bring in Marcus Semien to play SS and resign Rizzo.
1B Rizzo
2B Torres
SS Semien
3B Lemehaieu
LF Taylor
CF Gallo
RF Judge
DH Stanton
Bench
OF Hicks
1B Voit
3B Urshela
OF Frazier/Andjuar
billysbballz
Reynolds isn’t going anywhere nor should any team give up there farm for him! Yes he’s a stud but let him prove so for a few years and than the bucs will deal him when he’s closer to free agency because they are the bucs! As far as the Yanks they are throwing themselves into trade talks saying look over here while negotiations for a different player is happening and nobody will see it coming.
Central Valley
If Reynolds was really available, I believe Farhan Zaidi would be all over him.
bucsfan0004
Uhhhh, didn’t Zaidi trade him in the first place?
CT Oriole
Its cute the writers still think Frazier or Andujar are prospects. Both 27 entering next year with sub .700 OPS’s.
Stop it. Just stop it.
Todd Kemmerer
Those names are close to bench type, and to even mention those names must be a different reynolds. Cause the Allstars, gold glove finalist and centerfielder who also is controlled to 25vi think. Also the trade starts with Jason Dominguez covo. Yankees missed out b4 with Cole from being stubborn with prospects. I don’t thinkbhe will bevtraded
Rc124
Why give up prospects. Their prospect pool is on the shallow side already. If free agents are to be had, pay the damn money. Go get Marte. Plain and simple.
Rc124
Pay the cash for CF & SS free agents maybe bullpen help like Iglesisas. Use some of the fairly shallow prospect pool to POSSIBLY trade for Olsen.
Giants74
Don’t the Yankees have like 200 outfielders? They always seem to occupy half the IL.
mlbnyyfan
Yankees need to either play or trade Florial. Stop jerking him around. I’m done with him being the AAA shuttle yoyo.
billysbballz
Ok thank you mr Florial for your concerns
Darryl Rose
If Florial wasn’t a strikeout machine they would be more inclined to play him.
piratesfan26
The Pirates aren’t trading Reynolds, I don’t know why teams keep asking about him. He’s likely signing an extension this offseason as they’ve hinted towards that numerous times and have said they intend to build around him and Hayes. So better sign Marte Yankees, who is still an excellent player.
piratesfan26
Also, what the hell makes people think the Yankees can even acquire Reynolds? Both the Marlins and Mariners pushed to acquire him, and they have better farm systems than the Yankees do. Literally zero chance this happens. All of the trades the Pirates made last offseason and season were guys who had only 1 year left on their current deals, not 4 like Reynolds currently does.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Well, I think they actually could.
Our MiLB system is ranked in the upper half. It would really hurt though. Volpe, Dominguez, Gil, & German works out as one example. & I think it aligns with Cherrington’s timeline.
But. Cash is just so value conscious these days that I just can not picture him surrounding that much. Which is realistically what it would cost.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“surrounding” = surrendering
66TheNumberOfTheBest
If Bryan Reynolds were a Yankee, would anyone take it seriously if the Pirates wanted to acquire him?
But, half of MLB is a minor league system for the other half, so…
User 1471943197
Forwhomjoshbelltrolled. What a freak
Doug Bell
4 yrs/80 million for Marte is both unlikely and irresponsible.
billysbballz
Here’s my take:
Trade Torres, Voit, Hicks and a big chunk of his contract, Domingo German, and former top prospect Devi Garcia for Matt Olsen.
Sign Chris Taylor to play ss
Trade Florial, and a few good prospects not named (Volpe, Dominguez, Perazaa, Schmidt) for Buxton to play cf.
Trade for defense first catcher preferably bats left handed
Sign Verlander
Now my lineup:
Taylor SS
Stanton DH
Olsen 1st
Judge Rf
DJ 2nd
Gallo LF
Urshala 3rd
Buxton CF
Catcher?
Starters:
Cole
Verlander
Monty
Severino
Taillon
Gil, Schmidt and Cortes battle for a spot
Joe says...
Here’s the problem with that. Forget about the talent going to the As. The money going to the As is the issue. Voit may be a piece going but it will be nearly all prospects in the deal. The only way to lower the prospect cost would be if Elvis comes along with Olsen. And that’s a big if.
Ducky Buckin Fent
What do you think about Josh Bell, Joe?
Career OPS of .816. Switch hitter with some power (career Slugging% of .468). He’s a top 10 defensive first baseman that can play a little corner outfield too. He is projected to make $10.0 mil in arbitration. BTV lists his trade value at 0.0. & the Nats look like they may be taking a step back. Even if not, I would think he’d be attainable & nowhere near the cost of Olsen.
I think he would be a pretty good solution for us at the cold corner. Can’t lie though. I got this idea from a posters screenname. About 10 min ago.
Joe says...
To me, if we can’t get Olsen, just sign Rizzo. I’d take him any day over Bell.
If I’m spending Hal’s money. I’m taking Elvis in the deal for Olsen to lower the prospect cost as much as possible. That still wouldn’t keep me from a starting SS. I’d have Elvis on the bench. Even if Elvis isn’t part of the deal, I’m making the trade for Olsen. I think if Gil or King is prat of the package, Jasson or Volpe wouldn’t have to go. Paraza probably would and I’d be ok with that.
billysbballz
Olsen will be a free agent in one year. I don’t think it will take that much if Glenyber Torres and Voit plus German and a prospect like Garcia is in deal
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah, I would prefer Olsen or Rizzo myself.
I was just a little surprised by what I found out about him at fangraphs & Savant, Joe. He’s a solid player who would fill an opening we have. I’m certainly not married to the concept though.
Andrus.
Man, I just don’t know. He is still a borderline top 5 SS with the glove. & he can swipe some bags yet. & after what Texas is covering, his AAV hit would be “only” $7 mil. So that’s to the good.
But.
Career OPS of .698. & last year, .614. Which is; Bad Stuff. Scoring runs was our problem last season. So I am fairly reticent about Elvis Andrus New York Yankees starting shortstop.
Mendoza Line 215
Ducky- I will answer your question.I thought that Bell played reasonably well in Pittsburgh but not as well as projected nor hoped.I thought that Cherington could have gotten more for him than he did in a trade.Bell has a good stretch at first base and his fielding has come around, but he has the poorest arm of any major leaguer that I have ever seen.He started as a right fielder in the minor leagues, but the knock on him is that he plays only first base or DH’s,and nothing else, and it is correct.
He had a streaky career in Pittsburgh. He tied Chipper Jones with 27 for most home runs as a rookie for a switch hitter, but then just hit 10 or 12 his next year. Then in 2019 through May he tied some of Willie Mays’ hitting records,,butwent downhill after. He took part in the home run derby at the AS game, and, with many, went downhill in the second half.
He is a big guy,and a decent base runner, and a good team player. The knock on him is that he is one dimensional, and not consistent.
Ducky Buckin Fent
See?
This is the best part (for me anyway) about MLBTR. I am a decidedly AL-centric fan. As such, most of what I know about Josh Bell I just learned over at FG & Savant. But it was really nothing more than numbers. I have only seen him play a handful of games.
Hey, I’m a Yankee fan, @Mendoza. So I am very used to streaky hitters. We have…man, *lots* of them.
So. Rubber meets the road question. If you had designs on winning a pennant, would you be good with Bell as your first baseman?
Mendoza Line 215
That is the reason why I only really comment on the Pirates and some on the Phillies since I live near Philadelphia.I know about both teams, but unless one lives or roots for a team it is very difficult to know a lot about a lot of teams. That is why smart young men like you ask questions.
I look at the glass half full, and since most pitchers are right handed, the short route to right field could play into a strength. No shift can affect that!
I would say “yes sir” to your question.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I get it.
I’m a lifelong Yankee fan. Grew up in the Bronx, but have been living in Minneapolis for 20+ years. Truthfully, I should really only comment on the Yanks & Twins as they are the two clubs I actually know about.
I have a goal to have at least one poster on every team in MLB that I have rapport with & has good insight into his team. I’m over halfway done at this point. Which I think is pretty damn cool.
I appreciate the “smart young man” thing. Although I feel like I am 1 for 3 on that. Meaning: well, the plumbing is correct anyway.
Thanks for circling back around.
That was what the numbers looked like to me. But there is no substitute for insight based on good old fashioned boots on the ground.
Mendoza Line 215
Ducky- You are certainly welcome. And you may be smarter and younger than you think.
Mickey777
I’m with you Joe. Take the bad Elvis contract and minimize the prospect loss to acquire Olsen.
I think Cashman is just doing his due diligence on Reynolds, the real target is Olsen. They need to free up some space on their 40 man roster ASAP, to protect some of their youngsters. If we include a couple of players from our 40 man roster, give them one of our shortstop prospects, a young but decent pitching prospect and take back the horrible Elvis contract that might be enough to get it done.
If we can’t get Olsen then I would go for Rizzo also. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cash and Billy Beane
complete the deal before the Rule 5 draft. The Reynold’s discussions are primarily to keep Beane from being too demanding in his demands.
Rsox
@Joe Says… The other problem with that deal is signing Chris Taylor to play SS. He is basically an Outfielder who can handle 2B. He is not an everyday option at SS (yet so many people on this site seem in love with the concept). It would actually probably be better for the Yankees if Andrus did come along with Olson in this scenario
JoeBrady
You won’t get Olsen for that. The As won’t want Voit or Hicks. Garcia has been way marked down. German is meh, and probably not someone most teams will have an interest. Torres still has value, And those players are no longer minimum wage players. If the As are rebuilding, I’m not sure they’d like any of them.
Darryl Rose
You basically want to package failures to get possibly the best all around first baseman in baseball.
jackjohnson52183
Joey Gallo Cannot Be Traded,Because Even At Times When He’s Not Hitting,He Gives It His All In The Outfield.
Poster formerly known as . . .
That looks like the longest title for a baseball article I’ve ever seen.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Creative solution. Maybe the Yankees can get Reynolds by offering to pay the entire Pirates payroll over the next 5 years? The Yankees would get a steal on that one.
Viveleempireevil
Whichever ranking you look at (e.g. mlb/farm base/BA) the Yankees farm system is ranked somewhere in the middle. Which means they may have to reboot with $$$. Think AJ Burnett and CC days all over again. So, the reboot could look something like: C Seager…Y Gomes…and a trade for Reynolds, Marte or Olson. If they can flip Joey Bats for a bag of balls and package up Florial, Frazier and German for…something…they’re on their way.
Buccrazy
Pirates need to keep Reynolds, Hayes, Bednar. There needs to be some kind of line in the sand IMO. If you keep making trades you’ll never be close. I think the Pirates are on the right track and should be around 500 in 23 and have a shot at playoffs in 24. Trading Reynolds would be a step back, pretty much no matter what you get.
Robertowannabe
Based on what the ask seems to be for Reynolds, he is not going anywhere any time soon. If Ben does trade him, I believe we all would be happy for the return. I still think that he intends to start adding to Hayes, Reynolds, and Bednar this winter. Not looking for expensive huge name adds but a couple of mid tier solid FA. Let’s hope that my gut feeling is right and not just those burritos that ate…..
Buccrazy
I don’t think they will add this winter. They are still fairly far away. They will have some new faces on the 40 man already and they had a lot of bubble guys who played good down the stretch. I think they are still evaluating for another year. I would expect some adding to start in 2023 if they can improve by 5-10 wins next year.
NobButting
Come on Yankees, let’s make this deal before the winter snow season starts at my ski resorts. We are always content on being everybody’s minor league team, as long as I get my new snow guns on time!
joew
Any trades for B-Rey will have to be very high.
Yankees might not have the capital to pull it off. Well they do, but capital Ben would be going for….
Some of the Yankees best prospects are at postions the pirates are pretty stacked at and the time frame we are looking, but longer time frame for higher ceiling isn’t the worst either.
my arm chair GM targets would be, not all of them, just targets. Though i wouldn’t mind all of them 🙂 Ben, from what i can tell; typically goes for quality over quantity like NH did.
Dominguez
Gil
Y. Gomez
and any other possible rotation pieces they can find.
Mendoza Line 215
Joew-If Cherington trades Reynolds it had better make the Archer deal return to Tampa Bay look minuscule in comparison or he will lose the 120 fans that he still has.
The only deal that NH got quantity over quality was the Cole deal and that was the best that he could get.as the Yankees would not give up both Frazier and Andujar.
I wish he would have gotten more players back in the Archer deal especially if he was giving up Baz which I doubt that he had to do.
The return for Cutch was pretty good though, wasn’t it?
JR513
Pirates will not be contenders in 3 years more like maybe 500 7 years maybe
joew
going back to 2008 there are plenty of quantity over quality…. cole though is the biggest stand out. On the upside looks like we dodged a bullet with the Frazir Andujar combo neither has played much outside of one season. At least the astro’s players mostly played… even if it wasn’t very good.
At the time the Jameson trade was quantity over quality at the time. Contreras seems to be making that look much better.
Mendoza Line 215
Joew-Yes,several of the early trades were quantity over quality, and they did not work out so well. The Taillon trade I think was good because it takes many minor leaguers to get one or two decent major league players, and Taillon was always hurt.I think that NH was afraid to keep Cole since he had had some injuries, and the Pirates thought that if he had a major one they would not get anything for him.He wanted out anyway. In Moran they got a decent player to fill a gap and a good young pitcher in Musgrove, plus two throw ins. Both Andujar and Frazier would have been worth the chance, but it just shows that even very good prospects often do not make strong consistent major league players. That is why a trade for Reynolds would be highly suspect unless they are absolutely overwhelmed. The Pirates need an identity and to build around good young players, and Reynolds,Hayes, and Bednar are them.
joew
Jameson ‘always’ injured .. while a fair observation, didn’t really kill his value. still pitched a bunch of games every year except 2019 and 2020 allowed him more recovery time. He also performed well in those games. the second tommy john though will always give people pause.
Mendoza Line 215
He was a very high draft choice the year after Cole but I think that they took him before Mike Trout! There are a bunch of other teams in that boat though. He was always a good pitcher, but other than 2018,he really did not produce much.I think that there was very little likelihood that he would have stayed in Pittsburgh as he always said that he would test the market, and they seemed to get good players from the Yankees.I believe that this upcoming year is his last before free agency so it behooves him to pitch well if he stays healthy and pitches most of the year.
JR513
Trade the Yankees Reynolds so he can play for a winner now because he won’t be with the pirates when there close to 500
joew
I would wait at least until the start of 22 to see how the prospects fair through spring. If it looks promising then hold off until the deadline at least.
Of course if someone comes in with Elite type prospects.. well then.. probably forget that plan 🙂
Mendoza Line 215
JR- Outside of a three year period we have not been any good for a very very long time.
But we still have the 1960 World Series to remember fondly.

Mendoza Line 215
No sir.I was 7 in 1960 and they started my love affair with baseball.
I followed the 1971 and 1979 teams very closely.
The Yankees have always been the cream of the crop historically. Not even close.
But I dislike posters who knock other teams, especially when said teams are down on their luck.To my estimation they are worse than trolls, and add nothing to the conversation. And they detract from the overall rating of the tea’m’s classy fans like you.
