Former major league reliever Pedro Feliciano passed away last night, according to Eduardo Pérez of ESPN. He was 45 years old. The Mets, with whom Feliciano spent his entire major league career, released the following statement:
“The Mets are so saddened to hear of the loss to their family today. Pedro Feliciano will be remembered as a beloved member of the Mets organization for his impact as a great teammate as well as his reputation as one of the most competitive, durable and reliable relievers during his time in Queens. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Feliciano family. Rest in peace, Pedro.”
Feliciano appeared in parts of nine big league seasons from 2002-13. He led the major leagues in pitching appearances each season between 2008-10, serving as a situational option who was particularly effective against same-handed hitters. Over 383 2/3 career innings, he pitched to a 3.33 ERA, including four separate seasons of sub-3.40 ball. Feliciano also spent time in the Dodgers, Reds, Yankees and Cardinals organizations and pitched for a season in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
MLBTR joins countless others around the game in sending our condolences to Feliciano’s family, friends and loved ones.
RIP Pedro
Thoughts and prayers.
Rip Pedro terrific and durable during your time in Queens,
So sad to hear this. He was a workhorse and good at what he did. Twitter had that he was jet-skiing with his family the day before he passed. So young. Glad he could live life to the fullest right before. You don’t know when your time is up. I wonder if any other pitcher ever retired having pitched 100 less innings than appearances? The ultimate situational pitcher.
RIP, Pedro. May his memory be a blessing.
Thank you for the memories.
You were a bright spot in the darkness during those years .
Rest in Peace
Wow. So sad. A great LOOGY
RIP
Great teammate and friend always in a good move ,really fun to be around him
R.I.P PEDRO
This made me very sad to hear earlier today. RIP to a Mets legend and fellow Boricua.
For a few years he was as tough as any reliever out there, and though he got used as a LOOGY (Left-handed One Out GuY) I always had the sense that he could be pretty tough on righties as well. RIP Pedro and condolences to his family.
I loved to watch him pitch. So reliable. Had a no-nonsense approach. They just called him in time after time and he usually got the job done. There aren’t many like him around anymore
Sad
Wow. That is sudden and heartbreaking.
Goodnight sweet prince
What happened?
Just googled it. He died in his sleep and that’s all the details that were released. Glad he passed peacefully, albeit way too soon.
A good, dependable reliever during a time when good dependable Met relief pitchers were few and far between.
Sad to hear the news. RIP
wow 45 way to young to go out my condolences and best wishes to him and all of his loved ones.
caught this via TCDB first. I was still fairly young when he was at his best, but I cant forget the name or the consistency it represented. RIP Pedro.
RIP Perpetual Pedro who was a very overused but effective Mets LOOGY until the Yankees signed him and his arm fell off. Brian Cashman wasn’t amused but Mets were paid back with Dellin Betances. LOL
He has more Appearances in Mets Games than Tom Seaver.
RIP
Perhaps the last of the real workhorse relievers. RIP, Pedro.
RIP Pedro, you gave it all for the Mets
45 YO former pro athlete and unclear circumstances around his death. Hope it’s not something even more sad. Too young, RIP
Well he died in his sleep, he had a small hole in the exterior of his heart, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called left ventricular noncompaction caused by the failure of myocardial development from birth, and he wore a heart monitor while pitching in 2013 spring training.
I don’t think his actions had anything to do with his death.
Very good pitcher. Condolences to his family and Mets nation.
Way too young.
Rest in paradise
Wow. I had forgotten about his rare genetic condition. So young.
Sad day for us, but a much sadder day for his family and all those who knew him. RIP. It was a pleasure to watch you pitch for us all those years.
As solid a reliver as they come. Plus he stuck it to cross town Yankees a bit for 2 years. RIP you were never forgotten.
Life is short enough, 45 is way too short.
R.I.P Mr Pedro Feliciano.
This is very sad. Bless his soul, and condolences to his family and friends.
Shocking and heartbreaking. RIP.
Anyone whose been through a sudden, unexpected loss of a young loved one knows what they’re feeling. I have, and do. Condolences to his loved ones. One day, and one step at a time.
no highlighted name to check stats?
Sandy Alderson has done little to address this situation and assist in the time of need.
