9:10 pm: Jon Heyman of the MLB Network tweeted this afternoon that the Mets seemed to be prioritizing Max Scherzer and Gausman above Ray at the top of the market, which could align with concerns about forfeiting a top 15 pick by signing a qualified free agent. Heyman notes that the Mets remain interested in Stroman, among others.
1:23 pm: Billy Eppler has only formally been the Mets’ general manager a bit more than a week, but he’s jumped right into the mix and is working to bolster the team’s starting staff. Eppler said in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM this week that he’s “engaged in a ton of starting pitching right now” (Twitter link, with audio).
A spotlight was shined on the Mets’ interest in the rotation market this week when owner Steve Cohen voiced frustration with Steven Matz’s representatives after the lefty spurned his former Mets club to sign a four-year deal with the Cardinals. The Mets also attended Justin Verlander’s showcase earlier this offseason, though he has since re-signed with the Astros.
Starting pitching is an obvious need for the Mets, who’ve already watched Noah Syndergaard reject their qualifying offer for a slightly larger guarantee with the Angels. The Mets also don’t know whether free agent Marcus Stroman will return, and they’ve already announced that Carlos Carrasco underwent surgery to remove bone fragments from his pitching elbow. The current timeline has Carrasco returning early in Spring Training, but that issue, combined with David Peterson’s late-July foot surgery and the forearm issue that ended Jacob deGrom’s season in early July, only serves to further muddy the outlook.
The Mets are reportedly loath to sign a free agent who’d require them to surrender a draft pick, as doing so would mean forfeiting their second-highest pick — in this instance, the No. 14 overall selection in the draft. New York also has the No. 11 pick as compensation for not signing top pick Kumar Rocker in the 2021 draft. That might take Robbie Ray off the table, but he’s the lone remaining free agent starting pitcher tied to draft compensation. (The New York Post’s Mike Puma argued this week that even that steep penalty shouldn’t necessarily dissuade the Mets from pursuing Ray.) The remainder of free agents, including Stroman, Kevin Gausman, Jon Gray and Carlos Rodon, among others, can be signed absent of draft-pick considerations.
The trade market, of course, presents myriad other opportunities. One interesting note raised by Eppler — speaking more generally and not specifically with regard to the rotation — was the Mets’ ability and openness to take on a bad contract as a means of effectively purchasing a prospect from another club. Eppler was the Angels’ general manager when they traded 2019 first-round pick Will Wilson to the Giants in order to shed the remainder of Zack Cozart’s contract while dealing with payroll limitations from his prior ownership. Now, Eppler suggests he could be on the opposite side of such a transaction.
“There are avenues to go grab contracts elsewhere and tie prospects to them,” said Eppler. “Some teams are still doing that — most teams are not — but I think the openness and willingness to be able to say, ’We’re going to spend a lot on this player, the contract might be a touch underwater, but we’re going to get this prospect back.’ Exploring those, and trying to push those through a little more — there’s an openness to do that here.”
There are various permutations of that arrangement. The Wilson/Cozart deal, in its simplest form, came down to the Giants effectively purchasing a prospect from the Eppler’s Angels. However, it’s also fairly common for teams to take on an underwater contract when acquiring a more desirable player, providing some salary relief in exchange for surrendering less in terms of prospect capital.
For instance, if the Mets were to make a strong push for one of the Athletics’ available starters (e.g. Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, Chris Bassitt), offering to take on the remaining $8.25MM owed to outfielder Stephen Piscotty could persuade the A’s to settle for a lesser return. To be clear, that’s just one example — and there’s no indication the A’s are open to that specific scenario. But, that type of arrangement is another in which Eppler could leverage the Mets’ financial might in trade talks.
Whichever route the Mets ultimately take, some kind of upgrade seems inevitable. Their current rotation projects to include deGrom, Carrasco, Taijuan Walker, Tylor Megill and Peterson. It’s not at all a poor quintet if all are healthy, but for a big-market club with postseason aspirations, an additional veteran (or two) to add some dependable innings behind deGrom is a logical pursuit.
RunDMC
No wonder all this SP has signed so early. Mets were engaging with them and they considered the alternative. Scare tactics.
VonPurpleHayes
We joke, but I expect the Mets to sign at least 2 big name frontend starters. I’m not sure if that’s enough to make them a playoff team, but they will certainly spend like mad.
allweatherfan
I’m not so sure “front end” starters will be willing to sign there. So much negative press from the front office.
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
Mets may be engaged in a ton of starting pitching talks, but are any of these talks with free agent pitchers?
meckert
The front office trope is overstated and worn out. Players usually go where the fattest contact is, bottom line.
JOHNSmith2778
Especially on multi year deals where the AAV difference adds up. The one exception could be syndergaard who was looking for the best one year opportunity to better himself for a contract next year. Other than that money talks.
bucketbrew35
The Angels did a ton of research on Syndergaard and apparently put together one heck of a presentation. Even with his ties to the Mets, I don’t blame him for taking the Angels deal. They clearly wanted him to succeed and were invested in doing so.
VonPurpleHayes
This is just gossip. Players have a variety of reasons for choosing where to play, but it usually comes down to money. Plenty of players will choose the Mets this season.
Buckner
OK, feel free to sharpen your spears. I know I’ll get blasted, but I don’t care.
Send Cano, and $8 million to the Angels. That’s a net $32 million for two years at 2nd base, plus Seattle is chipping in $5 million. 2b is a position the Angels could use. Take back the last year of Justin Upton at $23 million to play OF.
Would be great if there were minor league players attached, but just these two names alone cleans up a lot of baggage on both sides.
OK. Fire when ready.

“Eppler: Mets “Engaged In A Ton Of Starting Pitching Talks”
–
I’m old enough to remember when Cohen’s Mets were involved with a ton of talks with FO people to staff the POBO position.
Maybe these publicity hogs ought to STFU and get something done.
Astros Hot Takes
I read these things, and I am SO glad to have Luhnow then Click as my gm – whenever they are talking, they go right to the heart of the matter, no bs, no puffery, no over-promise; then, they execute.
Man, listening to Correa, McCullers, Maldonado, it’s like I’m in a master’s seminar of baseball science.
Obviously, I’m not as up-to-speed on all the other teams, but I feel deeply that the Astros are the smartest team in MLB. And THAT is why they win.
PS – smart ALSO means sometimes employing a lesser raw talent, than a greater, when the lesser talent has the greater baseball makeup.
Samuel
@ Astros Hot Takes;
You touched a nerve. I always – and still do – love to watch smart ballplayers and smart teams play on the field. It’s why I watch MLB.
Analytics in FO’s started a revolution which I resisted – because too many poor FO’s didn’t understand how to mix what they were seeing in statistics with how fundamental / winning baseball is played. For me that changed maybe 6-7 years ago.
I completely agree with your comments about baseball makeup – and would add Baseball IQ. A coaching staff can tell a player where to stand on D, what to look for when running the bases, and how to set up the opposing pitchers and hitters. But the players still have to do the work making split-second decisions.
A tip on Maldonado that stayed with me – he played for the Royals one year when Salvy was hurt. In one game one of their TV broadcasters mentioned that while Salvy was a great all-around Catcher, Maldonado was “much more prepared each game”. Catcher is the most important position in MLB – and the Astros understand that. A Catcher strong in handling pitchers and calling games – along with solid D – makes a team.
As for smart FO’s – yes, I’d put the Astros up there with the Rays, Brewers, Dodgers, and Giants. They all have track records for taking so-so players onto their teams and making them productive players that impact games, Their teams outperform the players individual abilities. The Guardians are up there as well with their pitching, but they’ve only had limited success this far with position players.
JackStrawb
@Buckner Seattle’s 8m is baked into the 48m the Mets owe Cano.
If the Angels gets Cano + 8m and send back Upton the Angels are still paying 2/9m for a 39 yo of whom there’s no reason to believe he can play in the majors. 51 PA in foreign leagues in 2020-21, no xbh. It would be a 9m bet for no reason. They’d be much better off trying to pick up Ha-Seong Kim from the Padres for next to nothing.
DJ-VJ
Agreed. A week ago all these buffoons claimed no one would sign with the Mets. Also, when free agents see the Mets are improving with guys they already signed, they are more likely to sign with them.
labial
Players know that the Mets can’t keep them healthy. There is a huge negative cost of joining the Mets / significant probability of a debilitating arm injury. Players know this
dugmet
Labial, Your opinion is backed up by nothing.
JackStrawb
@labial Sadly true. Alderson is notorious for playing players into the ground. Take Nimmo—despite his fragility the Mets tried to play him in 98% of their games in 2021 any time he had a healthy stretch.
They also destroyed Taijuan Walker’s next FA contract by sending Walker and his dead, dead arm out for 7.13 ERA in the second half. They did something similar with Megill.
Alderson did the Wilpons bidding with David Wright, pushing him to play even when his spinal stenosis was worsening, all in order to squeeze out some ticket sales. How Alderson is looked at with other than complete loathing is a mystery. He’s the dysfunctional billionaire’s shill of choice in MLB.
RunDMC
They will have some big signings, but I can’t imagine many high-end SPs signing with a team without a manager at the time of the signing. Sure, most of these big signings won’t happen until after CBA talks (as predicted) which will buy them some time to find a skipper, but not knowing who you’ll be pitching for and having some terrible run support. Make matters stickier – they’ve retaining pitching coach Jeremy Hefner – and what if the new manager doesn’t agree with that young pitching coach, which could make finding an established manager more difficult.
JackStrawb
@VonPurpleHayes The Mets to date have given no indication they understand the need for 2 starting pitchers, let alone the 4 they actually need. Better put, they seem oblivious to their need for another 120 starts in 2022.
They’re also babbling, unbelievably, about pursuing Bryant and Baez—less than one win upgrades at 3B and 2B, for in excess of one hundred million dollars each.
Enjoy thinking about it, but the reality that the same front office is still here that burned Walker, that thought Peterson was a #4 when his only good results above A ball were 10 lucky starts in 2020 (4.52 FIP), that went into the season with very little chance of getting even half their starts from decent or better MLB starters.
It’s a 77 win team that lost at least 12 wins to FA and their payroll is already at $183m. They won’t be contending, even at $250m. It won’t be close, and it sure won’t be pretty.
phenomenalajs
I don’t see them signing both, but I could see them re-signing Baez to solidify a potent double-play combination with Lindor if they can stay on field together. That would be attractive for ground ball pitchers, especially if they want to keep Stroman. As for the examples in the article, Montas, Irvin, and Manaea are the A’s three best ground ball pitchers. If the Mets are serious about grabbing one of them and don’t see McNeil in their long-term plans, I could see the Mets offering him and Megill for one of those three and Piscotty. Then again, I see Baez is engaged in contract talks with the Tigers, so that could have an effect on which way they go.
DJ-VJ
JackStrawb…First, with the FA signings they just made, they are likely not going after Bryant…and perhaps Baez. More importantly, why the heck would they sign 4 starters? Is Tajuan and Carrasco gonna pitch out of the bullpen?
bkbk
There are 4 big names (Gausman, Ray, Sherzer and Stro). Thats a tall order. I do see a major Mets overpay coming.
stymeedone
As listed above, there are really only Stroman, Scherzer Gausman, Rodon, and Gray as name starters remaining, without compensation. To think that any team is going to sign more than one is unlikely.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Scherzer is on record as preferring to pitch on the West Coast, so I don’t think the Mets will be in contention for him.
Gausman is a strong possibility if he doesn’t return to the Giants. The NL East isn’t a cakewalk for SP, but it beats pitching against the NL West’s Dodgers and Padres. Plus, no more road starts in hitter friendly Colorado or Arizona.
Mets will probably go bargain basement hunting, as well. Would not hurt to have a Kim or Velasquez in reserve as a long man or insurance at AAA. I also like Tyler Anderson in that category. He was pretty good for a lousy Pirates team last year before being dealt to Seattle.
sykboy
what makes you unsure if they signed 2 top-end SPs that would not make them a playoff team? just hypothetically speaking let’s say they get Gausman/Stroman. now your team is:
deGrom
Gausman
Stroman
Carrasco
Walker
Megill/Peterson
Nimmo LF
Marte CF
Lindor SS
Alonso 1B
Escobar 3B
Canha RF
McNeil/Cano 2B

if they can stay healthy that will be a playoff team next season for sure. you have to believe if they’re spending all this money they’ll spread some of it around for the BP as well. just curious what your thought process is.

Because taking on a bad contract worked so well in that Cano deal.
(Note: if you cannot sense my dripping sarcasm, my perspective is that the Cano deal sucked for the Mets.)
Now, do they acquire Castillo by taking Suarez? Or acquire Sonny Gray by taking Moose? Not a good plan! Just sign Stroman and Jon Gray and build your farm.
Mario93
Literally wrote the same thing pretty much without seeing your post.
Mario93
Agree wholeheartedly… Get a couple of starters like you mentioned and call it a day, get some bargain signs to fill out the roster, hope you catch lighting in a bottle and call it a day. And focus on the farm. My same exact thoughts.
LongTimeFan1
@MannyBeingMVP
Suspension aisde, Cano had bad first half in year one with the Mets which included playing with hand injury.
He’s put up good numbers since….second half 2019 and Covid shortened 2020.
Overall as a Met – …275/.321/.463/.784 in 156 games, 605 PA’s, 561 AB’s.
23 homers., 37 2B
DJ-VJ
Agreed. Cano hit pretty well overall. Unless they can miracuously move him, he’s putting in significant playing time.
JackStrawb
@MannyBeingMVP It’s not much of an option, really. As soon as they start taking on bad contracts payroll, currently at $183 million, jumps to $205, $225, $245 million just to get three decent players to add to their current 65-win roster.
It’s not the Mets year. It just isn’t. Cohen could run a $350m payroll. The Dodgers did it one year. But he isn’t going to. Surely fans know that.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
I like Jon Gray a lot. Would be interesting to see what he could do when not making 15-17 starts each year at Coors. Also would no longer have to face the Dodgers, Padres and Giants on a regular basis as well as several road starts each year in hitter friendly Coors and Arizona.
JMHO, but I think Coors really effs with a pitcher’s head. Citi Field would be way more conducive for Gray to reach the potential his first round draft status predicted.
Mario93
I’m keeping pick 14 if I’m the Mets. Start adding more talent to that farm, not sure where that farm stands as of now, but those two picks, 11-14, should definitely help. And the draft overall.
I think Marcus Stroman is their guy if they want a pitcher. Stroman and maybe Jon Gray from the Rockies. Cohen wants to win, so maybe they bring back Baez as well…
I don’t know. If I’m the Mets I’d focus on bringing in a couple starters… and Maybe adding some lower cost guys like Freddy Galvis help out at 3rd and 2nd every once in awhile. I think the outfield could use some help as well not sure .. There’s always bargains to be had, they just have to look and locate the guys.
Don’t think this is the offseason where Cohen should spend a boatload again, bringing back Stroman would be a good enough “big money” signing imo. They need a year to see where this roster truly stands.. nows not the time to rush imo. They need a year to get organized imo.
Bill M
I think you’re on track. Although getting all 3 of Stroman, Gray, & Baez doesn’t sound realistic. If you’re the Mets & you score one of those guys, you have to consider that huge. Getting 2 of them would be unbelievable.
JackStrawb
@Mario93 Signing Stroman is worse than pointless, sadly. The Mets aren’t contending for at least 2, probably 3 years. Not with a 65 win roster returning, the #22 farm system with little in the upper levels, and payroll already at $183m.
The worst thing they can do is pretend to contend, sending payroll to $250 million by signing a couple of guys who’ll be on their way out of the game by the time the Mets *might* be relevant.
Hamstringing the 2025 roster because Cohen’s ego won’t let him admit last offseason sent the club into a spiral and that it’s out of contention next year, will postpone the next good Mets team by a couple of years, perhaps by several years.
andremets
Just stop. You have no idea what you are talking about? 2025? Really? This ain’t the Marlins.
waterdog311
Maybe Cohen should just purchase proctor and gamble to make sure he has and endless lifetime supply of tissues for moments when he doesn’t get his way…no wonder everyone kept saying “thanks, but no thanks”.

Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Stroman is no better than a #3 or #4 starter. But every team needs one of those, and though I wouldn’t expect him to duplicate his 2021 numbers, he’s decent enough and I would want him back.

Unless we are talking Bieber and maybe Max S, what front-line pitchers are we talking about? Gausman and Ray? Nothing spells disaster like signing two guys after their contract years.

I feel Gausman’s breakout is for real. Ray I’m not sold on. He has always struggled with control. This season very well might be an anomaly.
TradeAcuna
He maybe has 1 or 2 good years left until he turns to another Arrieta.
Metsin777
Carrasco is not a major league pitcher anymore. Peterson has one good start then one really bad start every other game. I think Megill has a lot of potential. Walker is more stretched out now so I think he will do better over a long season this time around. Ray, Rodon, Gausmen, and Stroman I wouldn’t give any contracts to. They are all mediocre pitchers who had career years during their contract years. Id like the Mets to take a chance on Jon Gray or trade for a guy like Patrick Corbin/Bumgardner with their teams taking on salary. A trade for Wade Miley from the Cubs or Sonny Gray works as well
getright11
No chance Mets have anything on the farm to get Miley or Gray
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Wouldn’t take much to get Miley. he’s like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates: You never know what you’re gonna get.
Sonny Gray proved he can’t pitch in New York when he was with the Yankees. Of course, pitching home games at Citi Field instead of Yankee Stadium should help.
If the Mets do trade for Gray, they will probably have to take on Suarez’s bad contract.

First time in a while i haven’t seen the headline “Mets GM fired…”

They can replace Thor’s two innings pretty easily. DeGrom had 92 and Carrasco had 53. That can hopefully be increased. Bring back a Stroman and get another solid 150+ innings guy and call it a day. The bullpen needs some work, too. On the lineup side, Conforto did nothing last year. McNeil will return to his normal .300+ level, McCann and Lindor will improve as they adjust to their new league.
This team could sneak into the postseason but won’t get very far.

As a Angels fan. I’m grateful for what Eppler did for the Angels. So I’m not going to bash him. His hands were tied to a certain degree.
But Mariners and Met’s fans can talk about all they want how management is going to make BIG moves. The thing they have to realize first regarding FA’s, Does the player want to come your team. And If they do, They might have to pay more than other teams for their services.
As far Mets go the front office and ownership goes it seems a bit chaotic.
Mariners are more stable and have game plan. I’m sure it’s a great place to play..

They actually seemed to want Matz but didn’t have the wit to set the market, instead waiting to see what the Cardinals offered then hoping he’d fall in their lap afterwards.
In the relief over Matz not signing with the Mets, fans failed to notice what a miserable sign this is. Never mind Cohen whinging over whatever imaginary slight is on the plate of the guy who set a record for fines paid for insider trading, he seemed to have no idea how to negotiate with the player.
Speaking of which, they had no idea Syndergaard was headed elsewhere, and the same transpired with Loup, who was surely worth the 2/15m plus a team option for 7m with 2m buyout, The Mets had no idea he was leaving, and didn’t value him anywhere close to what they paid Trevor May last offseason even though May never came close to Loup’s 2020-21.
Is Cohen’s ego really so fragile he doesn’t understand the Mets are going to have to overpay for a while to get good players?

I was told by this site that the “add a bad contract to a good player to get a lesser package” thing almost never happens.
I hate the complete lack of logic in all these “The A’s are rebuilding because twitter talking heads say so” narratives and “stories”. Beane isn’t doing a 5 year rebuild, if anything he will try to rebuild while winning, so if he was going to trade Olson, it would be for a package of players who gets the A’s contending now, not later.
That said, the only fair call trade pieces the A’s have are Manaea and Bassitt. I could see the Rays giving up Brujan as a headliner for either one. Do the Mets have anything like that?

Weather’s pretty similar to the Bronx and the Yankees don’t seem to have had much trouble over the years attracting players.

Playing for the Yankees vs Mets is no comparison. Yankees win every year.

Stroman believes Mets don’t want him and are prioritizing other pitchers over him.

Sherzer’s old and expensive but too effective still to be a Met. Johnny Cuetto has ‘Met’ written all over him. Chance at Kershaw in a couple of years.

Stroman just said on Twitter the Mets don’t want him
Best Screenname Ever
Lot of teams don’t want Stroman. His tantrum exit from Toronto was a PR disaster for him and he’s not helped himself by getting involved in stupid disputes about his trainer and anything that catches his eye on Twitter.

I know Trout has been lobbying for Sherzer. But seriously his nick name is “The Bulldog” and he didn’t pitch in the post season? They say it was a tired arm. Something is Wong in Flushing!!

Scherzer in a Mets uni seems weird. Hope it happens. They could use his intensity and playoff experience.

Not sure why Met fans are all aglow over adding Marte, Escobar and Canha. Marte will probably be OK for two years, but unless you have a Kenny Lofton like physique, you ain’t playing CF in the majors at 36 or 37-years-old.
Escobar and Canha can fall off a cliff at a moment’s notice. The only good thing about signing those two is that neither cost a whole lot of money. But you just know they are gonna stink up the joint.

Mets are on fire with the quality bat signings. slight overpay on Marte but he’s been on their radar for years and his athleticism leads me to believe he’ll play like Granderson did in his mid-30s.
can’t say for sure if Scherzer would ever want to come to the Mets, but if there’s a price you have to bet Steve’s willing to pay it. I’d go hard after him, and then Gausman/Stroman. potentially Gray if one of those guys falls through. not sure what’s up with Stroman but i’d be happy to have him back he’s durable and a gamer.
