The Marlins have outrighted outfielder Magneuris Sierra, relays Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (Twitter link). That suggests he’s already cleared waivers. As a player who has spent parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues, the 25-year-old Sierra will have the right to elect minor league free agency in the coming days.
The move could bring an end to Sierra’s four-season tenure in the organization. Originally a Cardinals’ prospect, he was traded to Miami alongside Sandy Alcantara, Zac Gallen and Daniel Castano as part of the December 2017 Marcell Ozuna deal. Sierra, who had briefly debuted with St. Louis the season before, was viewed as a potential everyday center fielder based on the strength of his speed, defense and bat-to-ball skills.
The left-handed hitting Sierra appeared in the majors in each of the past four seasons with Miami but never hit enough to live up to that everyday billing. He has yet to hit a home run in 540 MLB plate appearances, posting a .240/.287/.278 mark altogether. Sierra’s baserunning and defense have been strong as expected, but that lack of productivity at the plate eventually squeezed him out of a crowded if unsettled outfield mix. Miami still has Lewis Brinson, Brian Miller, Bryan De La Cruz and Monte Harrison as center field-capable players on the 40-man roster.

Perfect candidate to join the Guardians or Pirates.

He’d be a perfect fit for the Mets organization.
MarlinsFanBase
He runs the bases too well and actually knows how to play defense. That’s not a Mets kinda player.

I love when Marlins fans think they have any right to talk trash, especially Marlins Fan Base, when they haven’t won anything in years. I get a Braves fan, a Nats fan or possibly even a Phillies fan but the Marlins have no right clowning the Mets lmao

I, for one never mock the Mets. Mets fans, with their ridiculous hyperbole and blindness to the merits of other teams are fair game

So fish essentially traded Marcell, a wife beater, for Alcantara and Jazz (via Zac), worked out ok. When you add in the salary and 2021 production for Stanton and Yelich, and it seems like fish went right direction. But they need to sign three or four potent bats this off-season to have a chance to be in mix next year.
amk1920
They won the Ozuna trade by a mile and Stanton as well for unloading most of his contract
bighiggy
Cards qualified ozuna and got a draft pick for him leaving. Names Alec Burleson. Kids pretty good. Not Alcantara Chisholm good, but could end up closer than you think

What is the relevance of the phrase “a wife beater” to the conversation?

Hard to believe Mags was just dropped from the roster. Even harder to believe he cleared waivers. With speed and defense at such a premium in baseball, he would be a good guy for pinch-running and late-inning defensive replacement. Wouldn’t he be a nice complimentary piece to any team signing Schwarber? Yes, Marlins won the Ozuna trade. Had Marcell re-signed with the Cardinals and kept his hands to himself, it may have been closer but as it stands today, the Red Birds got beat.

Sierra can’t hit at the MLB level, and pinch runners/defensive replacements generally aren’t worth a roster spot.
stretch123
He can’t hit… that’s why. High speed guys are usually available for trade at the deadline once teams know whether they are in the hunt for October or not.

He was doing quite well at the start of the shortened 2020 season. We were above .500.with him and when he got hurt we started losing. Could be a coincidence but you never know. For a couple weeks he showed he belonged. He wasn’t a superstar or anything but he was valuable. Coming back from that injury he was used so sparingly that it’s very hard to judge him. I imagine he finds a job with someone as a good 4th OFer.

Yeah, when Sierra and Berti got injured in 2020, it weakened our bench because it took away our two main pinch runners and late inning replacements.
Sierra is a good get for a team’s bench. And at 25, I’m not sure if I would’ve given up so fast.
Odd that the Marlins have let go of Harold Ramirez and now Sierra, but are holding onto the older and less effective Brinson. Sheesh!
Deadguy
Always thought he’d be a great leadoff hitter, but his on base skill never fully materialized.
MarlinsFanBase
He’s essentially the modern day Endy Chavez. Good for the bench and roster, but not a starting player.

Hopefully the Marlins are moving on from Brinson and Alfaro too, otherwise this doesn’t make sense.
Hopefully we add a couple of bats and two legit late inning relievers (one being a closer).
Chemo850
The problem with that is where do you add those bats? They have a lot of solid position players, but the issue is that none are superstars. The only two positions that I would say there is an obvious glaring hole is center field and catcher and there aren’t any premium guys in free agency for either position. The alternative is to replace some of the “solid” guys like Rojas or Brian Anderson. And I’m not sure that adding a 30 million dollar shortstop is the right answer when the one you have is above average as it is. They really should have signed Realmuto somehow when he was a free agent. In all honesty, I wouldnt sign any of the big free agents if I were them. A number of guys like Sanchez, Diaz, De la Cruz need more at bats so they can properly assess what they have. And next years class might better match up with their needs.

I’ve been rooting for Mags since he came up. Sadly he just can’t get on base enough. The Marlins still have a versatile defender with blazing speed who is just short of what’s needed at the plate: Jon Berti. And he has a little pop too. Only room for one
Cosmo2
Another guy who proves that speed on the base paths is useless if you can’t hit.
