Eduardo Rodriguez has until November 17 to decide whether or not to accept the $18.4MM qualifying offer extended to him by the Red Sox, but seems to be garnering a decent amount of attention from other clubs in the meantime. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that the Blue Jays, Angels and Tigers are interested in the lefty, who turns 29 in April.
The free agency of Rodriguez is an interesting case, as there’s a disconnect between his surface results and underlying numbers. In 2021, he had a strikeout rate of 27.4%, walk rate of 7.0% and groundball rate of 43.2%, all of those numbers being better than league average. Despite all of that, his ERA was a lofty 4.74. However, there seems to be quite a bit of bad luck in there, as his BABIP of .363 was much higher than his previous seasons, and all the advanced metrics seemed to think he deserved an ERA closer to the 3.50 range. MLBTR recently predicted that teams would see past that ERA, with Rodriguez getting a contract in the range of five years, $70MM, and this early interest seems to suggest that may be the case. Since extending that one-year qualifying offer, it has been revealed that the Red Sox added a multi-year offer to the table, and the interest of the Angels had been previously reported as well.
The fact that the Blue Jays are interested is hardly surprising, given their rotation situation. Fellow lefties Robbie Ray and Steven Matz have both entered free agency, leaving Toronto with a top-heavy rotation of Jose Berrios, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Alek Manoah, with two spots available for options such as Ross Stripling, Nate Pearson, Thomas Hatch and Anthony Kay. They are also very familiar with Rodriguez by virtue of his pitching for their division rivals over the entirety of his career thus far. The Blue Jays figure to consider all options to bolster their pitching staff, and have already been connected to the Justin Verlander showcase as well as making a strong offer to Andrew Heaney in the early days of this offseason.
As for the Tigers, they are looking to jump out of their rebuild and into contention for 2022. After an awful April in 2021 where they went 8-19, the club went 69-66 the rest of the way, which perhaps suggests they were a better club than their 77-85 record would indicate. It could be a very busy offseason for the Tigers, as Morosi also says they’re open to adding a shortstop and an outfielder. Their current rotation primarily consists of young and still-developing hurlers like Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning. They’ve likely lost Spencer Turnbull for 2021 due to Tommy John surgery and perhaps lost Matthew Boyd to flexor tendon surgery, creating the need for a veteran contributor like Rodriguez. Like the Blue Jays, they have also been frequently mentioned in rumors so far, being represented at the aforementioned Verlander showcase, as well as showing interest in Anthony DeSclafani and Jon Gray.
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
When it comes to combination of age, stuff, and upside, E-rod is the most intriguing FA pitcher this offseason. He’s the guy I think could be signing to be a 2-3 and wind up becoming a legit number 1 in a year or 2.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
What’s the record for largest contract ever given to a pitcher coming off a season with an ERA over 4.73? Whatever it is I’m thinking E-Rod is going to more than triple it. I’ve seen pending free agents post an ERA around 5 while pitching over 200 innings and still have to accept 1 year deals around the league minimum.
JOHNSmith2778
Samardzija was the first I looked up. 4.96 era on 32 starts over 200 IP in 2015 and he got 90m. So I don’t think Rodriguez is getting 270m.
Jaa1968
And he sucked.
JOHNSmith2778
That’s a bit of a stretch. He was almost exactly the same before and after. ERA 4.09 before 4.24 after, ERA+ was 96 then 97. He was an average player with a great agent.
carllafong
He’s 64-39 with three seasons of an ERA of 3.8 playing in Fenway as a lefty! That is better than average in this day and age. I’m not arguing he’s Cy Young, or suddenly going to be elite, but I guarantee you pitching in Anaheim or Oakland, or for the Dodgers in parks that are more pitching friendly he’s certainly a 3.50 pitcher who has the ability to be very good in the playoffs. The last two years are hard to judge with the short Covid season, and how that even impacted him this year.
case
Well, he pitches in a hitter’s park, in a league with DH’s, and in a division with many of the top offenses in baseball. Even with the bad luck… the same performance in the NL central probably nets him an ERA around 3.4.
mlb1225
The big thing that killed Rodriguez was his batting average on balls in play. Sat around .300 from his rookie season up through last year, then spiked to .363 in 2021. But he still posted career bests in FIP, xFIP, SIERA, K%, and BB% while staying relatively the same in exit velo and hard hit rate.
Jack Marshall

JoeBrady
Games aren’t won on peripherals.
==============================
But predictions on future performance are based on peripherals. The biggest mistake, by far, that I see teams make is looking at last year’s stats and thinking that is the way they will perform going forward.
mlb1225
I think it’s safe to say that his 2021 was an outlier. He didn’t do anything different in 2021 that he didn’t do in years prior. Heck, he did a lot of things better in 2021 than years prior. Why would all of a sudden he got from a mid-3 ERA pitcher to a mid-4 ERA pitcher even though nothing else but some bad luck?
carllafong
A lot of people see him as being similar to Wheeler in that a change of scenery is what he needs to go to that next level. Remember he’s a lefty in Fenway and pitching in the east with all those hitter’s parks– Toronto, Tampa, Camden Yards, Yankee Stadium. Move him to Anaheim for 81, and then add in all the games he’ll play in Oakland and Dodger Stadium and his ERA is suddenly a 3.40 guy and a cheap option.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
@JOHNSmith2778: I just saw what you were talking about with Smardzija. I had no idea he had an ERA of about 5 when the Giants gave him that contract. What were the Giants thinking? I know he was a relatively high draft pick and he had spurts of good starts but all in all he was never that great of a pitcher. I can’t figured out why he was so highly regarded and paid? Sometimes I wonder if teams were over compensating him because they were afraid he might go play football or something. Wasn’t he drafted in the 1st round to be a wide receiver in the NFL? I wonder if he would have been a better football player. I know Jeff Francoeur turned down a full boat scholarship to be the starting quarterback at Auburn. I wonder how he would have turned out as well. Obviously Kyler Murray made the right choice by going to the NFL but I also wonder how he would have turned out if he had signed with the A’s. That guy is an incredible athlete.
jopeness
he was a hybrid WR/TE at Notre Dame. He probably would have been a solid NFL player, but, the salary comparison is far a part(not to mention the health).
luckyh
He could be #2 this year and 5 next. He’s like a box of chocolates.
carllafong
That’s true with a lot of these guys. Keuchel won a Cy Young and what is he now?
all in the suit that you wear
I agree. Watching ERod, he always seems like a roll of the dice.
Fever Pitch Guy
ERod has been a model of consistency when he’s healthy.
In 2015, 2018 and 2019 he had a nearly identical ERA (3.81-3.85) and WHIP (1.3).
Same 1.3 WHIP in 2017 with a slightly higher 4.19 ERA
Same 1.3 WHIP in 2016, but with career-worst HR & BB ratios
They keep trying to shove the “peripherals” down our throat, but that is not the reason why so many believe he will revert back to his 2019 effectiveness.
It’s pretty obvious his 5.52 ERA over the first half of this year had everything to do with his continued recovery from Covid after not pitching for 18 months. All you need to do is look at his 3.71 second half ERA to see that he wasn’t fully recovered early in the season.
Am I the only one that remembers ERod was supposed to be the Opening Day starter this year, but was instead shelved for DAS (Dead Arm Syndrome) until the second week of April?
If ERod remains in the AL East next year, either with the Sox or the Jays, I fully expect him to have his usual sub-3.90 ERA. As long as he’s healthy, which seems to be the case, there’s no reason to think otherwise..
all in the suit that you wear
Maybe I remember the times ERod has driven me nuts more than his good outings, but when I think of ERod, I think of a high pitch count and hoping he can get through 5 innings. Looks like he averages less than 6 innings per start in most years. I could be wrong about ERod, but I am not going to worry too much if the Red Sox don’t sign him.
Jack Marshall
I agree. High pitch counts, out in 5, lots of run support that covered his flaws.
Jack Marshall
he wasn’t any star in 2019. He just was the starter who got the most run support. He’s #3 at best. Whatever he’ll cost, the Sox can do better for that money.
all in the suit that you wear
Who is better than ERod that the Sox could target? I guess if no one better is available, they may resign him. I could see the Sox possibility giving Verlander a two year deal if there wasn’t a draft pick attached to him. I don’t think the Sox want to lose the no. 41 pick that is a do-over for not signing Jud Fabian. I thought that was good gamble as long as they get the do-over.
Jack Marshall
Both Whitlock and Houck may be better. Use the money for some solid bullpen additions.
KD17
FPG – The numbers you suggest are good for a #5 SP. Also, you can easily be misled by the way things shook out in 2021. Dating back 6 years E-Rod has been a model of inconsistency on a monthly basis. He has hot streaks and cold streaks and they typically offset so 3 good months and 3 bad months. This pattern is undeniable if you check his stats.
2021 shows the same inconsistency because his April numbers and August and September numbers are his 3 good months and May, June and July are his 3 bad months. This is NORMAL for E-Rod and his illness may have exaggerated it a bit because his April was a high adrenal month trying to prove something then fatigue set in because he didn’t properly take time off as recommended. This caused May, June and July to be slightly worse than expected. By August he was starting to get his second wind and that triggered one of his hot streaks. Notice that during his hot streak he consistently had one out of three or so bad games just like the previous 5 years. His 2021 pattern maps to his normal pattern and is a very good indicator of his future.
His future is more inconsistency with every other game being good just like the last six years. If he stays in Boston the BABIP info won’t change because Devers will still be at 3B. The more ground balls he induces the worse the BABIP situation will be so people can claim he’s better than he’s pitching but that’s not fair because it’s a given that Devers will be at 3B despite not being qualified to play there. That sad thing is that EVERY pitcher on the Red Sox must deal with the Devers issue. The ground ball pitchers are the ones that pay the biggest price.
In Boston, he’s had the numbers of a #5 SP and if you want to blame Devers for his lack of success I can’t disagree. Given a good defensive team his ERA could some day touch 3.50 but he’ll still be the inconsistent starter with every other game being good and bad. He is what he is and there are no indications after a six year pattern that he’s going to change.
Please, please please somebody sign him other than the Red Sox. The draft pick and the wasted money that might go to him would be better spent on consistent quality players.
all in the suit that you wear
Also, maybe Seabold can contribute later next year.
all in the suit that you wear
Very interesting, KD. I think I am leaning the way you are.
carllafong
Sure, all #5s have a 19-6 season pitching in Fenway as a lefty.
Bruin1012
FPG
I agree with your comments here and Eddie will be missed. It will be interesting to see how he does with Detroit. Eddie was a far better pitcher then most give him credit for. I watched all his games this year and I truly believe that he was struggling on the first half of the season with his conditioning also a few games in the 2nd half. I remember watching games and when he would come out with that 88-88 mph four seamer he would get rocked but when he was popping that 94-95 four seamer and had the changeup working he was easily a number 2. I think he will be healthy this year and he will pitch very well for the Tigers.
One things for sure I guess Bloom knew what he was doing when he attached the QO.
GASoxFan
He *probably* ought to take the QO…
Earning-wise, if you think he’s good for 5/70, the question becomes could he lock up 4/52 starting on his age 30 season, unencumbered by another QO???
I think odds are yes. He should bet on himself and take that QO, and/or work out a longer deal with Boston.
He was off a year, then returned and got stronger as the season went on. I’d think he could put together an equal or better platform season for a FA run next season.
bkbk
LMAO, if 5 teams are trying to offer him a long term deal I think he’d probably be better off playing the market Mr. GAsoxfax.
Jack Marshall
Great. Hope he does. The Sox can use the draft pick.
Jack Marshall
Well, he didn’t. Good. The Sox won’t sign him. Some other sucker will offer more. I hope he signs with the Yankees…
KD17
GASoxFan – For that money plus a million or two you could have Verlander. That should be a no brainer. For less than he wants you could have Rodon a better pitcher. There are so many better FAs for the money it’s crazy to invest in a guy so incredibly inconsistent.
Bloom needs to only make big deals with elite players. E-Rod is far from elite. Go get Story to play third and move Devers to DH. That’s quality money for a quality player. It’s fine that Bloom does insignificant deals for insignificant money because mistakes hurt less but his E-ROD QO is the biggest mistake he’s made so far BUT he could come out smelling like a rose if E-Rod takes a deal with some other team.
All Red Sox fans should be rooting for E-Rod to take a deal elsewhere so they get the pick and can use the money more effectively.
From E-Rod’s perspective, he should take the QO because it’s by far the biggest over-pay of any QO in the 2021 off season. It’s double his worth or more.
bradthebluefish
He’s been intriguing for too long. E-Rod is a streaky starting pitcher. Has been. Always will be.
carllafong
But if you look at the cost of good starting pitching 5-70 is a bargain. If I’m the Angels I’m all over him. And he has a chance of having a CY Young caliber year– it’s within the realm of possibility.
KD17
carliagong – You are right he’s perfect for the Angels!! He gets hurt, he’s inconsistent and everything about him suggests he should do better than he does!!!
Great call except for the Cy Young part. That sounded more like the kid on Angels in the Outfield saying “It could happen!”. Honestly, the probability of it happening is very, very low. What is likely is he’ll pitch a decent game every other game and finish with a 3.80 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. That is highly likely based on his 6 year trend.
carllafong
Well my friend I don’t actually expect him to win a Cy Young, but I’ll take him as my number 4. If the Angels sign or trade for a true 1 and 2 Ohtani would be their three and Eduardo becomes #4– good enough. And right now they don’t have pitchers dominating every other game– I’m in my own hell with this team
butch779988
No it’s not…
Jack Marshall
Yeah. Good luck with that. Meanwhile, I think the Sox will be happy to see him go. As will I.
carllafong
Come on. guy, you Red Sox fans are never happy. The guy has pitched well for you and had 19-6 season. Be careful what you ask for– you might just get it. He’s not an ace, but he’s a solid pitcher pitching in a tough park for lefties 81 times a year as well as Camden Yards, Yankee Stadium, Tampa, Toronto– they’re all launching pads.
Jack Marshall
You’re not paying attention. His 19-6 record was an illusion: look at his run support. he’s never been a stopper, he’s often out of gamed early with high pitch counts. He has a better reputation than his results warrant. The team can replace him and be better for it.
carllafong
I understand what you’re saying, but nobody thinks he’s an ace, or even a #2. He’d most likely be the Angels’ #4. They want Verlander and Ray, and they want a third affordable arm– could be Eduardo, and if it is he slots in behind Ohtani at 4. You’re telling me he wouldn’t do well there? I understand he’s inconsistent, but in the right park I think you can take a half a run off his ERA and he becomes a good value.
tpaine69
Tough being a lefty in Fenway.
User 4245925809
Bill Lee, Bruce Hurst, Rodriquez himself, Jon Lester, Chris Sale say different. Some just allowed themselves to get psyched out by the wall and were intimidated by it. Jon Tudor and Bob Ojeda come to mind right away.
deweybelongsinthehall
John,
Tudor didn’t seem intimidated. I just the team gave up on him too soon. That said, they got Easier who hit and was traded for Baylor. I loved Tudor as a Cardinal but do you think Boston gets to the WS in 86 without Baylor?
deweybelongsinthehall
My spelling errors;
think the team gave up too soon and then Mike Easler.
Salvi
Tudor was traded due to numbers. Clemens, Hurst, Boyd, Nipper. He was odd man out.
User 4245925809
Nipper reeked. Never liked the guy as a HaSox pitcher, Just another swingman at best type, who should have never been anything to count on.. Like another guy who came up thru the system named Chuck Rainey at the time.
Nipper, when he got that start during the ’86WS had the highest ERA (at the time) for any starter in history to start a game and his numbers backed it up.
whyhayzee
I think the Red Sox traded Tudor because they felt they had enough lefties (3 at the time). Getting Easler was a decent move and getting Baylor was a game changer. Like having an extra manager. Trading Ojeda made less sense but they thought they were getting a stud in Schiraldi. He was the number one guy at Texas, ahead of Clemens and Swindell. But he was a one trick pony. He had a nice run before everyone figured him out.
jmi1950
Old Fenway vs. New Fenway. Once they built the new press box the wind blowing out to left was cut down. Sure fly balls to left are still cheap homers but crushed hits that would be out anywhere are singles. Jim Rice on balance was hurt by the wall.
downeysoft42
Yeah I’m probably wrong, but I don’t feel like fenway is as hitter friendly as it’s made out to be. Sox fan. But, stantons lasers in the playoffs for example are taken away. A lot of liners for homers and turned into singles or doubles, a lot of home runs in right field and right center are 2nd deck at Yankee and lazy fly balls at fenway. It sure isn’t a pitchers park, but it’s just an odd ballpark. Could hit a 310 foot homer around the pile and have a 115mph liner off the monster for a single in the same night. Add in a 415 foot shot to right center and your 1/3 with a home run when you have 3 at most parks.
User 4245925809
Won’t be another Rico petrocelli made by fenway, will there jm1950.
jmi1950
I remember Freddie Patek – 5’4′ 150lbs – hitting 3 wind aided pop fly hrs one night. Petrocelli had the strongest hands/wrists for a man his size. He met Buddy Rich when he was young. Rich gave him a set of drum sticks that Petro worked with every day.

Erod is not fully confident on the mound in spite of his ability. I think he would be a star in the right environment or flounder mightily in the wrong environment. His only real bad stretch of pitching was the first half of this year and that came off of a missed season with COVID complications.
Jack Marshall
That’s just not true. He was inconsistent all year, and has been his whole career.

KD17
dennyd – I like the monthly numbers but go do every year he’s been in the majors and you’ll see a similar pattern. The hot at the end and beginning isn’t unusual. Mid year he often suffers badly.
That’s what makes E-Rod E-Rod. He’s a model of inconsistency.
30 Parks
… it’s a confidence thing – agreed. Rodriguez has yet to hit his stride, but he’s figuring it out.
KD17
30 Parks – So will he figure it out before Devers figures out fielding? Will he figure it out while Bloom and Cora are still associated with the Red Sox?
I say no. Six straight years with nearly identical numbers is not a figuring it out trend or pattern. Just like Devers isn’t figuring out how to field since he’s led the league in errors every year since he got promoted to the Red Sox.
It’s fine to hope but there are not facts to support either hope.

Eovaldi-Sale-Stroman-Matz and Houck or Whirlock!! Let E-rod go
Rsox
Not a fan of Stroman and his attitude wreaks of David Price, probably a bad fit for Boston. Matz is interesting providing that last season wasn’t an outlier. Houck and Pivetta will be in the mix as will Connor Seabold (though he needs an out pitch badly). Whirlock sounds intriguing, does he have any powers?
TROYP815
Agreed. I would prefer to see them go after Matz as opposed to Stroman.
KD17
TROYP815 and RSox = I say go elite or go home. For the type of money being talked about with respect to E-Rod the inconsistent I think adding a couple of million and landing an elite pitcher makes more sense. Give them a contract that spans Sale’s so you have then re-up Eovaldi for the remaining years to match and you have a great big three to go with Houck and Pivetta or Whitlock.

Not sure why this guy would warrant a whole MLBTR article about his free agency. His career has been mediocre at best. Amazing be even got a QA and that anyone would consider paying this guy that kind of money.
Redsoxx_62
Maybe try reading the article before leaving stupid comments
jakethesnizake
Of course the Red Sox fan comes to his defense first. You guys won’t miss him and his mediocrity.
Mystery Team
He’s better than mediocre much better. First off he pitches in a division full of killers. The bats on the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Rays are no joke. Secondly he’s had some fluky injuries and other medical issues happen to him that posed massive speed bumps in his career. I’d take him right now I could see him going on a nice stretch of seasons from this point on. He’s another year removed from his horrible 2020. He’s gonna be an under the radar great signing for some team.
jakethesnizake
No he’s not. He’s the epitome of mediocre.
He’s been in the league for six years and thrown over 140 IP once.
Maybe things change in lowly, no pressure Detroit. Could be perfect for him to finally become above average (ie no longer mediocre).
Jack Marshall
E-Rod is a lefty B version of Clay Buchholtz. You can’t depend on him ,and never know which version will show up. The metrics get silly when they start telling us that a pitcher who looked lousy really was great. I watched all his starts. He loses composure. Yeah, he has all the tools, but we’ve been gearing that for years. Maybe he’ll put it all together, but the Sox shouldn’t pay.crazy money to find out.
Jaa1968
Exactly., Sox needs to let him go and use the money to get some pitching.
.
StudWinfield
3/45 seems pretty attainable for ERod so I don’t think he takes the QO. Once a non-star pitcher hits 30 he should be taking all the guaranteed $’s he can.
I see ERod, Matz and Gray all the same. 3/4 on a good team. 3-4 yr deals. I hope Yanks grab one.
KD17
StudWinfield – As long as you have desperate GMs E-Rod has a chance to be signed for something more than his 6 years justifies.
EJesus98
I think him and the Cardinals should work something out. Rodriguez’s ERA was made incredibly worse by the poor defense (specifically infield) in Boston. St. Louis on the other hand has gold glovers covering their field. Plus St. Louis could use another good starter if they want to legitimately compete in the playoffs. Just a thought, not a perfect partnership but I’d argue a satisfactory one
tstats
This is a really good point
KD17
tstats and EJesus98 – Nobody has more pitching that St. Louis except maybe TB or the Dodgers. It’s true as long as Devers plays and E-Rod focuses on improving his GB% there will be problems. St. Louis, however, isn’t a place to send pitchers it’s a place to get pitchers. They have so many talented young arms it would be great if Boston could send hitting to them to get arms.
Their starting pitching suffered due to injuries. Flaherty is a stud, Wainwright is old but a work horse with good results, Reyes should be in their starting staff in 2022, Mikolas is a solid fourth starter and Dakota Hudson is a fine #5 SP. They still have Gallegos and Hicks to finish games. They are loaded with pitching but need to produce more runs.from their young outfielders.
What I like about your suggestion is that the pitching coaches in St. Louis are outstanding and might be able to help E-Rod become more consistent BUT their pitching scouts are also excellent so I doubt they have any interest in E-Rod because he is mediocre and inconsistent.
StL Busker
Having just come off of a season where they captured 5 Gold Gloves, it should have been 6, but MLB is tired of giving Yadier Molina a Gold Glove every year, solely because he is the best defensive catcher in the game, Mlb looked around and said wait a minute, we can’t give ANY TEAM 6 Gold gloves just because they deserve it, so they went to the Lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, and said look, we can’t help you draw more than 5,ooo fans a night, but what we can do is take away a very deserving Gold Glove from The Best Catcher in the game, and give it to you, and that catcher that you have that no one has ever heard of. SMH
Shortstop? St.Louis has 3, that can be everyday material on any other team, which one do you want? The GG producing shortstop that will give you 30 Homer’s per season, but a .260 BA, or would you prefer a Gold Glover that makes league minimum, and hS team control for the next 6 years. Your choice, you tell us.after all we have 5 more shortstops in AAA * AA, all with a little POP with the bat, and each GG material. St. Louis is loaded with Shortstops, and each with their own unique approach to the game, but each are definitely GG material.all we want in return is a decent #3 or #4 starter that we can count on to give us 180- 200 innings for the next couple of seasons. Now, problem solved, next question please….oops the phone is ringing, brb.
