The deadline for players issued qualifying offers to decide on whether or not to accept has now passed, with Brandon Belt of the Giants being the only one out of the group of 14 to accept and return to his previous team. That means the 13 players who turned down the $18.4MM offer are now attached to draft pick forfeiture, including Carlos Correa. Of course, a player of Correa’s skill level won’t see his market greatly affected by a detail like that. In fact, MLBTR recently placed the star shortstop at the top of this year’s list of free agents and projected that he would land a contract of $320MM over ten years, despite the qualifying offer.
Another thing that apparently won’t stand in his way is any lingering resentment out of the Yankee organization in regard to the 2017 Astros sign-stealing scandal. It has been speculated by some people that the Yankees may not want to make a high profile acquisition of Correa, given he was a member of that now-infamous team, which defeated the Yankees in the ALCS before going on to beat the Dodgers in the World Series. But the Yankees decision makers have made comments that seem to suggest it won’t be an issue for them.
When asked if the scandal would play a role in how the team views Correa, Boone said “No,” per Dan Martin of the New York Post, but did acknowledge that the players would have to feel the same way. “Anytime we’re involved in a free agent that’s of large significance and will attract a lot of years and dollars, we’re all gonna feel really good about it.” The article also relays a statement general manager Brian Cashman made last week, saying, “Things like [fan or player sentiment are] not part of that process.”
Hal Steinbrenner evidently feels similar, as Jeff Passan of ESPN relays a quote from the team’s managing partner. “I think most people have moved on from that,” he said. “I mean, I think it’s only healthy to move on from things like that instead of stewing on it year after year. But, you know, people have the opinion that they want to have about that particular player. But, in general, we’re going to look at every single option. It’s the same thing we do every year.”
That’s surely good news for Correa, as he and his representatives will want as many teams in the bidding as possible, especially historically big spenders such as the Yankees. The club is certainly a fit for a shortstop, since moving Gleyber Torres to second base in September. However, they may opt not to make a long commitment to Correa, or any of the other highly-touted free agent shortstops, on account of prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe. “No question that factors in because we do feel in Peraza and Volpe we do have two long-time impact big-league players,’’ said Boone. “We’re excited about those players and believe they are real. That factors into any decisions the organization and [Cashman] make.”
Volpe is generally regarded above Peraza by prospect evaluators, as he is ranked the 18th prospect in all of baseball by FanGraphs, 22nd by Baseball America and 15th by MLB Pipeline, whereas Pereza comes in 48th for FanGraphs and 58th for both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. However, Volpe has only climbed as far as High-A in the Yankees’ system, meaning he’s unlikely to be an option for the big league club in the short term. Peraza, on the other hand, played most of 2021 at Double-A and finished the season with eight games at Triple-A, making it at least feasible that the club decides to forego a big expenditure at the position, although it’s also possible that’s just posturing for negotiating purposes.
Elsewhere around the league, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times doesn’t see the Mariners as a fit for Correa, based on the contract length. He reports that it’s believed Correa is trying to get within range of Francisco Lindor’s $341MM ten-year extension or “at least an 8- to 9-year deal with an average of $30 million per season and an opt-out clause.” Divish opines that Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto may not want to sign a contract of quite that length, based on his personal experiences trying to work around contracts like that, citing the Albert Pujols contract from Dipoto’s time in Anaheim as well as the Robinson Cano contract that was already on the books when he came to Seattle.
Marcus Semien, however, could be a better fit for the Mariners. He’s almost exactly four years older than Correa – 31 and 27, respectively – meaning he won’t be able to demand a contract of quite the same length. MLBTR predicted he could garner a contract of $138MM over six years, an average annual value of $23MM. But Divish has a different framing on the situation, saying, “The thinking is that the Mariners might have to offer him a five-year, $140-$150 million contract to keep him from going to San Francisco or New York on a four-year deal.”
$150MM over five years would be $30MM per season and make Semien one of the highest-paid players in the game by average annual value, which would be an incredible feat considering that he had to settle for a one-year, $18MM contract with the Blue Jays when he was a free agent a year ago. Like Correa, he also turned down a qualifying offer this week and will now be tied to draft pick forfeiture.
bucsfan0004
So this article is putting Correa with the Yankees? Didn’t Correa say this week Jeter was overrated and shouldn’t have won any of his Gold Gloves or something to that effect? Yeah, Correa won’t be in NY.
C-Daddy
To be fair, his comments about Jeter’s Gold Gloves were pretty spot on.
FSF
To be even more fair, Jeter is a hands down HOF and Correa is a confirmed cheater.
DarkSide830
all of these things can be concurrently right
Orel Saxhiser
Correa can play for my team any day. As a Dodger fan, I thought the whole cheating thing was overblown. Other teams were also doing “stuff.”
bucketbrew35
Remember when the Yankees were accused of essentially the same thing? And there was apparent court sealed evidence that they fought tooth and nail to KEEP sealed? And then of course this site buried the lead on it as well.
nj.com/yankees/2020/06/judge-calls-out-yankees-mlb…
Yankees fans when Correa was an Astro: ‘F that cheating piece of S.’
Yankees fans if Correa signed a $300 million contract with them : ‘Deep down, I always knew he was born to wear pinstripes.’
bucketbrew35
I would also like to add that why I have a lot of respect for Jeter, his most famous defensive play was against a player who apparently didn’t know how to slide.
PinstripedPride
I don’t want Correa. He’s an arrogant cheating blowhard. That he had the gall to bash Jeter like that tells me one of two things: one, he’s not actually interested in becoming a Yankee because of course the fans would react negatively to those statements; or two, he’s got even more hubris than I realized and he thinks that despite it all, everyone will forgive him his transgressions and make him a rock star. Either way, screw him.
Sherm623
@bucket
Yankee fans? Or all fans? We root for the laundry, right?
Dumpster Divin Theo
He’s not wrong. Still a cheater
billysbballz
That’s completely inaccurate. Why not research before falsely making accusations?
deweybelongsinthehall
it was the cheating plus most of the team’s post cheating handling of the situation. Correa as I remember was better than others in handling it but the timing of his statement about Jeter suggests to me he’ll use the Yankees to up the offers of others. I just don’t think he wants to go to NY as otherwise he would have deflected the questions better. Just my take.
Mystery Team
@PinstripedPride come on man I’m a Yankee fan as well as you but let’s be real as much as I love Derek Jeter he didn’t really deserve his Gold Gloves. He made some amazing plays over the years and in some enormous spots for sure but he wasn’t a gold glover. He was the best team leader I will ever see in my lifetime and a great two hole hitter who came up huge in big time situations but his glove was average at best. With that said I don’t want Correa for the simple fact that he’s got that strange A-Rod personality. He’s most definitely an egotistical big mouth who will always have that cheating scandal attached to his name. I could see him standing a couple of inches from the mirror staring into his own eyes just like Alex. I’d rather have Semien to be honest he’s a gamer who plays every day and plays well. Plus he comes for less years and money than the top two names.
Benjamin560
Semien will be a Mariner by the end of the offseason. Yankees play on the East coast, not West, as Semien said he prefers to live.
ChiSox_Fan
Semien reuniting with the White Sox.
rocky7
bucketbrew…….No, wrong…..incorrect….the Yankees NEVER were accused of “essentially the same thing” nor in fairness were the Red Sox……the Astros own this scandal all by themselves….if you believe otherwise you are only kidding yourselves!
Pete'sView
Semien to the Giants—at any cost—if SF is smart.
BleedingBlue162232
@ Cey Hey
It’s not about just the fact he was one of the cheaters…that wouldn’t have been a big deal. It was the systematic way in which they cheated and that it was a collaboration of the entire organization. Add to that the most important factor, that none of the stars involved showed ANY remorse for their actions, and that is why Correa would not be welcomed by the majority of Dodgers fans — along with most other team’s fan bases.
I sure hope he doesn’t end up on the Dodgers, as karma will prevent that POS from ever winning a World Series. Yes, in my opinion, the Astros have still never won a World Series and it’s my understanding that none of the 2017 Astros wear their WS rings out in public, so it seems they don’t really think they did either, lol.
ashlandcab
I agree, save the $300 million and wait a year for Volpe, put $300 million into a centerfielder ,catcher and a #2 pitcher all those needs answered for the price of an arrogant punk, just like the rest of the Astros, then pull a trade for a 1st baseman or keep Rizzo, off season done !!!
AcedOut
Yeah, because we all know the Yankees are “clean”…
Uruguay77
Okay Daddy Yankee
Brad Scott
@C-Daddy: You’re kidding, right? Correa’s character and credibility quotients took a big hit with his misguided criticisms of Jeter. Citing the wildly inaccurate DRS to claim he’s the better SS and Jeter’s undeserving? Really? And confusing baseball with boxing by referring to “Golden Glove” awards? Yes, Correa’s an excellent SS, but if he and Jeter were contemporaries on the open market, there probably isn’t a team in MLB that wouldn’t prefer Jeter. And that’s no knock on Correa, it’s more of a statement about how special Jeter was.

Come on Jerry, go overpay and get Semien.
downsr30
Semien would be a great catch for the Cardinals. Semien, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Carlson. O’Neill would be tough to navigate through.
I’m not sold on Semien getting paid what they are saying here though. I’d put him at 5 years, $110m.
bigdaddyt
Ya that’s a solid lineup but you clearly didn’t watch him play this year. He’s 3rd in mvp voting, had one of the best offensive seasons a middle infielder has ever had while also winning a gold glove and providing a great example for the jays young core. He will get so much more than 110
padam
He also had one of the best hitting lineups surrounding him. That type of protection and a better hitting stadium is going to help out.
smuzqwpdmx
Semien had a better offensive season in 2019 than in 2021, in a great pitcher’s park with a mediocre lineup.
downsr30
He’s 31. Let’s say he gets a 5 year deal – it’s tough to justify paying a $30m AAV for a guy in his age 32-37 seasons. It’s different if you’re signing a guy to a 10-year deal and your getting his age 28-38 seasons.
SodoMojo90
No other team gives a rats ass about what he did for the Jays young core. Nobody will be taking that into account during contract negotiations. Maybe theyd like it for their own team but theyre not paying him for any of that crap.
Orel Saxhiser
The game is played by human beings. That stuff matters. Why the anger?
Benjamin560
I’d gladly pay 5 for $150M. We have $16M in commitments beyond 2022, which is basically a blank slate. Its time to shop til you drop!
PutPeteinthehall
Semien 5/125 minimum. O’Neill on his way to an 80 game suspension.
SodoMojo90
He’s already stated he’ll be signing with a team on the West Coast. So there’s no way he will be playing for the Cardinals.
apisani7
This guy is a fool for writing this article how he did. Yanks won’t sign Correa
Kemajic
Seager is the fit for the NYYs. LH bat needed, Move to 3B later in his career. Better hitter than Correa.
Orel Saxhiser
Seager would have to move to 3B almost immediately.
nyy42
why?
Orel Saxhiser
His defensive skills have been declining for a while. I watch every Dodger game and have observed this.
bucketbrew35
Add always injured that list as well. You are correct, he’ll fit right in.
rhymeoftheancientmariner
Better hitter that Correa? The guy hit 3rd in the lineup basically all season with a sub .220 average. Power was there but you can’t have that average in the middle of the lineup. They mine as well keep Gallo.
ryanmcleod
Seager hit .306 this season.
Ichi Pujols
Remember the other Seager, @rhyme. The good one. I don’t think the Yankees are looking too hard at Kyle.

It’s certainly interesting to hear cashman say fan and player perception doesn’t factor into the process. I’m sure it’s true for a lot of GM’s, but I feel like I would normally expect cliches about bringing in good character guys, team chemistry, fans’ opinions being important, etc. Just off to hear him be so dismissive of seemingly important parties in all this
PinstripedPride
I knew that from day one, and so do a lot of other fans. Correa is never donning the pinstripes

MLB needs max years on contracts
vincent k. mcmahon
What would you propose as the max year? I think what the NHL has going on would be an interesting comp.
smuzqwpdmx
The last thing MLB needs to do is force more player movement. The game is better when fans can remember who’s on their team.
I’d rather put an automatic unwaivable no trade clause on long contracts so teams can’t unceremoniously dump their declining star to save some money.
dshires4
As a Mariners fan, I couldn’t give a damn about the name on the back of the jersey. I want to see a World Series banner hanging out over right field. It’s been my frustration with how fans viewed Kyle Seager’s exit. I don’t root for the Mariners if and only if Seager is playing 3B.
oscar gamble
Why does MLB need a max year on contracts? To protect billionaires because they don’t have any experience in successfully running a business?
marinersblue96
This is really monopoly $, 5 year 150 million. That is a little crazy after the one year deal he signed with the Jays. Props to Semien for betting on himself.
rhymeoftheancientmariner
I think he’s finished top 3 in AL MVP voting twice. Hit 45 bombs last year and won a good glove at 2b. The Mariners aren’t as attractive a destination regardless of their up and coming young roster. They’ll have to overpay so 5/150 isn’t that crazy.
bigdaddyhacks
I’m probably a homer, but even with Correas good stat line* he’s a giant d bag and not seemed to well liked around the league by opposing dugouts. I know I know, he’s an “elite” SS, but it sure does seem that outside of Houston most don’t like this dude. My guess, he sits out till the break or the Astros or tigers pay him. He ain’t playing in NY those dude might beat his ass.
Randy Marsh
Good thing Gms don’t think like fans like you. Carlos Correa is the top player on the market who plays one of the most important positions in the field and has a cannon of an arm. If you really think “feelings” are going to stop him from making over 300 million you’re really delusional. Sit out til the break haha that’s funny
Orel Saxhiser
The notion that Correa is this terrible human being is ridiculous. Fantastic player, personable, and a bonafide leader. He is a treat to watch play baseball.
pc01
Don’t drink and post, my man.
Samuel
It’ s long shot, but don’t count the Nationals out.
If their medical staff believes that Correa’s past injuries will not affect his play going forward, they may well be interested in him as a cornerstone along with Soto. Rizzo fills in around stars. They have a young Catcher, a decent run producing 1B. A 3B. Then they can go after pitching.
Laugh all you want. There was no speculation about Max going to the Nationals until the day it was announced. Same with Corbin who was a lock to go to the Yankees.
DC is a large market. The 5 wealthiest counties in America surround the capital. Never underestimate Rizzo.
padam
So why trade Turner?
Orel Saxhiser
To perhaps replace him with a better shortstop?
kevnames42
Not planning on going for it all next year so get some MLB ready prospects in Ruiz and Gray then sign a star FA instead of extending Turner. That way you get the same production at short plus top prospects. Great deal for Rizzo because they weren’t going to win it all this year or next. Watch out for 2023
padam
Not sure I’d agree there’s one better on the open market than Turner.
nyy42
Turner is WAY better!
Orel Saxhiser
@Samuel, In no way do I think the Nats are in full tear-down mode. As you indicated, Rizzo is a shrewd executive. Though it would cost some money, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Nats signed one of the shortstops (Correa or Seager) and a hitter such as Castellanos for the middle of their lineup. Pitching would be a work in progress, but the offense would be lethal with guys like Bell and Ruiz on the lower end of the lineup. In any event, I think the Nats will be back in the post-season sooner than many people think.
CalcetinesBlancos
Correa is going to get a GM fired.
Nats ain't what they used to be
Why is Semien treated like a $30M player? The guy has had exactly 2 seasons with an above average OPS+. Sure 2021 and 2019 were great seasons but he is a one time all-star and that should have flashing warning lights all over it.
painterman360
Agreed. I’d peg him in the 16-20 mil per season for a 4 year contract. He bats mid .250ish and 31 yrs old
bucsfan0004
Oh yea, i’d rather have Correa and Seager…. players who are out for themselves and if their little toe hurts, they take a week off. Both of those players will find a way to give themselves a 6 week mid-summer vacation from whatever team that signs them. I’ll definitely take .280 with 25HRs over 110 games than Semien…
Forget about Semien, who is the first one to the ballpark and plays everyday, and complies 45HRs. When you hit 45HRs, you’re just compiling at that point. Not to mention all the extra time he takes to mentor younger players? Those who watch Blue Jays games know that Bichette was a bad SS, and Semien helped him on defense, a player playing Semien’s true position, to make him a better player. Who needs that? Definitely not worth the AAV of Carlos ‘Bang Bang’ Correa.
smuzqwpdmx
His two most recent real seasons were MVP-caliber. 2020 could’ve been too, he always starts slow and he was on fire by the end of the semi-season. If he were a little younger, there’d be no question about him being a $30M player.

Ducky Buckin Fent
Oh, Bob.
There you go again showing both poor verbal & math skills simultaneously. “Forever”, Bob?
There are actually teams that does apply to. Ray’s & Mariners come to mind. Let me help you with the math, Bobby Boy. It’s been 12 whole years. As it’s my Yanks, that’s actually incredibly notable. But in baseball terms is not very long. 22 other teams have “suffered” the exact same fate.
You’re the bees knees, bob.
A real hoot. If one is amused by Bitter Old Dudes.
Always fun, sunshine. Go back to your thread that gets you all “excited” about your team’s “future”. Me? I will get excited about another “ho-hum 95+ win season” in ’22. Man. I love being a Yankee fan. Especially seeing how jealous you lesser fans get over it.
🙂
Ducky Buckin Fent
Throwing the occasional bone to the greatest fan base in MLB is just good business, @Bob.
@MLBTR knows which side their bread is buttered on. Too bad nobody really cares about whatever scrubass team you root for, uh? Way of the world though, hoss. You guys have your little threads to talk about whatever “exciting prospects” you picked up at the deadline.
Meanwhile, the Big Boys are gearing up for – yet another – playoff season. Don’t be a hater, Bob. It is unbecoming.
BobGibsonFan
Greatest fan base? Wow… arent most of the yankee fan base dead by now? 27… 27… 27… has been a chant from quite a while ago. Do they still do that?
Thank goodness they expanded the playoffs, otherwise the Yankees would have been left out. When did they win their division last?

Jjfleury
I think signing Correa at over $20 million or most any FA at that level has a historical precedent of extreme risk.
For every successful $20 million plus player like Verlander, Kershaw, Sherzer ….
You have Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis, Robinson Cano, Francisco Lindor, and the list goes on.
It seems many players are better before the large contracts and then they change. Look at Joe Mauer’s stats before 2011 and after 2011.
If I am to risk this kind of money as a GM it would be on pitching only and I would aim to make up the wins with lower cost younger position players with upside.
Of all the short stop FA the safest bet in my opinion is Corey Seager and he likely will not stick at short and end up at either 2nd or 1st base as his career progresses.
No doubt Correa is an incredible talent, but I expect the contract he signs to bury some team with Miguel Cabrera style impact on Detroit.
zappaforprez
You just called Miggy a bad contract? It was one of the best contracts value-wise up until 2018 when his decline really started. It was also his third big contract, so what are you even saying?
dimelotitony
Not sure why people are all up in arms over the comment that Correa made first off he was asked in an interview by former player Carlos Baerga in a Spanish interview what he thought about Jeter winning 5 gold gloves he answered how in today’s society you should be doing answering the truth and that was that Jeter was never worthy of his 5 gold gloves he was statistically not only worst fielder during his era but of all positions from 2003-2014 Jeter cost the Yankees the most runs -152 up next was Fielder -95 & Hanley Ramirez -73 when he won his gold gloves he was -92 so Yes Correa’s comments were spot on even if most Yankee fans were not appreciated of Saint Jeter being blasted.
I’m a generational Yankees fan and wear my Yankees pride with honor but for those to be commenting here that Correa is a cheat and how dare he throw stones at Jeter all Correa did was be honest just that in today’s woke society if you don’t agree you want to rebel for those to say he is a cheat ummmm we do know that Jeter played with cheaters during his championship teams and never once outed anyone on that team nor saint Torre because it was about winning the championship and getting the fame that comes with it. Just like Boston fans still in denial stating Big Papi never did steriods that the mitchell report was false I’m still waiting on the defamation suit Big Papi was going to bring up against the guy that sold him the “spiked milkshake in D.R.’ if they still believe big papi never did anything then Joe Biden is the best President to ever live in this great country.
Now about Cashman & Hal another blow hards that are blowing up smoke to us Yankee fans stating they don’t care about his past that is nonsense it is all to just say they made a pitch to him but he decided to go elsewhere to satisfy the demands of the fans their real prize for Cashman is Trevor Story now that he can obtain him at a cheaper cost he will snatch him up but Correa is the kind of arrogant person you need with this businesslike Yankees team he is Reggie Jackson II someone that needs to get the Yankees back to being the most cockiest team ever which helped them be the Last Real Dynasty in all of Baseball.
casorgreener
TLDR, but I did notice you only put periods at the end of every paragraph and nowhere else.. That’s rather odd.

Mystery Team
What’s funny about the free agents SS this season is that Semien had the best year out of all of them and it’s not even close. His numbers over the last three seasons are better as well. I don’t care if Seager played a full year his numbers would not have been close to Semiens. How come no one is talking about Marcus Semien getting a $30 million a year contract? Honestly though I don’t see a $30 million a year player anywhere on the free agent lists right now including Seager and Correa. Neither one of them has numbers that warrant that type of money. Yes they have post season numbers but I attribute that to the teams they played on. In both cases did either one of them really have MVP caliber seasons helping to get their respective teams into the playoffs? The answer is no not even close. So why then are they commanding that type of money?
dimelotitony
The reason being is simple and that is age yes he has shown to actually be the most durable as well and able to play two positions without much fanfare but his age is what is going against him I wont be surprised if Tigers get him as a fallback to Correa now that they invested in E.Rodriguez I can see them offering Siemien a nice deal $140 million/5 years.
dougsolo1
It’s funny how people still don’t realize that you can’t take comments from GMs and owners during free agency at face value. They lie. They lie all the time! It’s strategy. If the Yanks decided that they wanted no part of Correa given his role in the cheating scandal, why would they reveal that to the press? By acting interested, they: (1) drive up his price for other teams, and, (2) put pressure on whoever their real SS target is by creating the perception of other options. Despite these obvious reasons to lie, writers and fans continue to believe these comments year after year!
I don’t care what Cashman or Boone or Steinbrenner say… Yanks are not interested in Correa. It’s not happening.
dimelotitony
I agree with you fully I dont think the Yankees are interested or ever were interested in Correa to begin with its either Story or Sieger I dont buy into Cashman either stating they are fine with waiting for their two young stars in Volpe & Peraza mind you Volpe has never played past A and Peraza just got a taste of double A and a few games at Triple A but the Yankees are heavily invested in winning now and not later with Cole, Stanton soon to be Judge, DJ all going to be two maybe three years older when they are finally called to the big stage. Also, when has Cashman actually given a top rookie a chance to compete or bring him up when it was the time? In Cashman’s history as GM that has been the knock on him he holds on to prospects so long they lose the luster why else this year have Gardner play every damn day yet they had Allen or Florial if you dont deem Florial high enough but shown enough in the majors wouldnt it have been beneficial to continue to have left him in the Majors playing to get some trade stock up? This is why I dont believe anything Cashman says it could be a ploy to drive the price down but I know that he is in his last year of GM and is going to await for a prospect a two down the road? Me thinks not……..I say he will get Story & Olson giving up Peraza,Green,Luke amongst others I wont be surprised a 6 for 2 deal
A-A-Ron
Technically a five year deal for Semien is his age 31-35 seasons. And the Mariners will always have to pay a surcharge to get anybody good to sign. I’d rather pay the tax right now than give up any critical parts of the farm, they will need the cheap labor to be a sustainable long term winner. I’ll hope for 5 years 120, but if he’ll sign for 140 tomorrow, let’s go. You now sign one of Ray, Gausman, or Stroman and all of a sudden, you have a playoff team.
Toms Changeup
Correa and Seager are both decent players or star caliber players I guess I should say, but I believe any team signing either will be sick of the contracts after 4 or 5 years. Personally I would rather have Semien for 5 years and if he regresses in two or three years there isn’t 30 mil a year being spent on a 3 mil player for years to come.
Kevin28786
You are correct, but some of these teams simply never learn.
HBan22
I’d be surprised at this point if the Mariners didn’t end up with Semien. They seem to be targeting him pretty strongly, and Semien likes the west coast. He also may like the idea of being one of the veteran leaders of a young up and coming team that should be competitive as of next year.
philliesfan215
I think fans of any team that employed Pettitte, Giambi, ARod, and Clemens should think carefully before throwing around the word cheating.

I’m a Braves fan with no dog in the fight, but I think Semien is great fit for Seattle. That dude is a winner and the M’s are on the rise.
Toms Changeup
I could also see the dodgers making an offer to him after losing Taylor and Seager. Even more so if he’s willing to slide to second or play third some

Jeter was one of the worst fielding shortstops in history. At his best, he was like Bogaerts; a solid glove and arm, with limited range. In his prime, his bat and leadership skills made up for a mediocre glove. But at the end, it was painful to watch. His career DRS was -162.
Just for fun, go to FG, look at career hitters, choose fielding, and sort. Jeter has -162. The second highest is Fielder with -100.

Wow, wrong agin Mr Red Sox Yankee hater…..ever get tired of being constantly wrong?
Throughout his career at SS, Jeter range to his left (towards 2nd for your understanding) was always limited, but his range to his right, evidenced by his now many times copied jump throws from deep in the hole threw many a hitter out and objectively were excellent….how many titles did they win with him at SS…want to take a guess?
Frankly the only thing painful are your cryptic negative comments regarding the Yankees…..denigrating a first ballot HOF player like Jeter is old Yankee hating….get over it!

Everyone knows Jeter didn’t deserve his gold gloves except Yankee fans. Metrics don’t lie.
pvlangos
Even many Yankees fans know he did not deserve the Gold Gloves.

Yankees should stay away from injury prone players like Correa

Carlos always did a bang up job in Houston, did a number on garbage pitches, really cleaned up out there. He took some might Hefty swing, and created a buzz, wire to wire.

“Make what you will of defensive metrics, which can of course be spotty on a year-to-year basis …”
You’re too kind. Defensive metrics can be spotty. Enough said.
And the three-year sample caveat is fallacious too. Let’s look at one example, and let’s use a sample spanning 2018-2021 since 2020 was a truncated season.
Jose Iglesias:
Statcast Outs Above Average +17 (12th rank of 41 shortstops);
Statcast Runs Prevented +13 (11th rank);
Defensive Runs Saved -18 (15th rank of 19 qualified shortstops per Fangraphs posting of the Fielding Bible metric);
UZR/150, 6th rank;
Def, 9th rank.
Boy, talk about range — this guy’s all over the place.
Kidding aside, batting and pitching are, generally speaking, amenable to quantification; but the act of fielding a baseball, with its multitude of potentially impactful variables, defies accurate quantification. The effort is noble, but the results are dubious. You can’t take them at face value. You have to do your own research and compare — and even then you’re appraising varying and often conflicting data, so you can’t be too sanguine about your conclusions.
Or, best of all, if you see that particular fielder doing his job often enough in real time, trust your eyes. If you’re attentive enough, your perceptions are not inferior to those of a BIS guy watching tape of plays on a computer screen, which is where DRS data comes from.
Don’t let “authorities” snow you with the patented “you just don’t understand” gambit. If the metrics look fuzzy, you do understaned.

Damned editing window. “understand” not “understaned.”

Even the good ‘ol eyeball test is better than some defensive stats, I’ll agree.
The things I saw Iglesias do defensively over his career for every team he played for was nothing short of otherworldly. If defensive metrics don’t have him light years above everyone else at that position in his prime(save Simmons), they are suspect for sure.

Correa was spotted at lunch AND dinner with Hinch in Houston. He then followed Baddoo and Candelario on social media last night. He’s a Tiger. Count it. I’d put my left noot on it.
Orel Saxhiser
@zappaforprez, I think you’re right. What does your right noot say about Corey Seager?
zappaforprez
Sure seems the Yankees want that lefty bat, no? Especially after the Jeter comments, it seems there’s barely a chance they go for Correa. I’d say NYY get Seager, but no clue about Story/Semien. Could see either with the Angels.

It was breakfast and lunch (aka brunch), not lunch and dinner

Congrats, you responded to the most insignificant part of the post.

If it was the least significant point, why did you lead with it?

Correa was spotted in Houston, dining with AJ Hinch. Fyi

Semien is going home to the Bay Area
— to the Giants. All this Mariner chatter is noise.
