1:47pm: The White Sox are also showing “strong” interest in Verlander, tweets USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. They’re planning an “aggressive” offseason, per Nightengale, and hoping to kick things off with a successful courtship of Verlander. Of course, the South Siders’ spring facility is in Arizona, which isn’t ideal based on Verlander’s reported preferences, but that certainly doesn’t rule them out of the bidding entirely.
12:58pm: Verlander has both multi-year and one-year offers in hand, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link), adding that the right-hander could make a final decision as soon as this week.
11:47am: The Braves are also among the teams with interest in Verlander, tweets David O’Brien of The Athletic. Atlanta would align well with Verlander’s reported preference for an East Coast club with Spring Training in Florida, and their status as reigning World Series champions obviously helps when pursuing any older veteran prioritizing a contender. Of course, all those players inked sizable one-year deals, whereas Verlander may be seeking multiple guaranteed seasons.
The Braves had had few qualms about signing short-term veterans of this nature under under president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos — evidenced by recent short-term pickups of Cole Hamels, Charlie Morton and Josh Donaldson.
10:46am: Justin Verlander has until 5pm ET today to accept or reject a one-year, $18.4MM qualifying offer (as do all other free agents who received a QO), but the widespread expectation is that he’ll reject and fully explore his options. That’s due in part to Astros owner Jim Crane saying last month that Verlander will be looking for a “contract of some length” in free agency, but it’s also due to what’s reported to be strong early interest in the future Hall of Famer.
Verlander held a showcase for teams earlier this month — a step that would seem unlikely were he simply planning to accept the Astros’ QO — and his reps at ISE Baseball have had the past 10 days to gauge interest from other clubs. Ken Rosenthal suggested on MLB Network this morning (video link) that early indications are Verlander would prefer to sign with a club that holds Spring Training in Florida, which meshes with Joel Sherman of the New York Post reporting that several interested teams believe Verlander prefers to play with an East Coast club.
Notably, Sherman adds that both the Red Sox and Blue Jays — each of whom hold Spring Training in Florida — made “aggressive” offers to another high-upside, short-term pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery: Noah Syndergaard. Peter Gammons tweeted yesterday that Syndergaard had multiple offers at or near the $21MM price point for which he agreed to join the Angels, including one approaching $25MM in value. It’s not expressly clear that the Jays or Red Sox offered $21MM+ for Syndergaard, but it’s notable that both teams were aggressive on a fellow Tommy John reclamation play.
Verlander has drawn interest from both Toronto and Boston, per Sherman, who adds that the Yankees seem fairly serious with their interest in the 39-year-old. Verlander, somewhat notably, held his recent showcase at Cressey Sports Performance — the Florida-based training facility operated by Yankees director of player health and performance Eric Cressey. Corey Kluber did the same last offseason before ultimately agreeing to a deal with the Yankees. As noted at the time of the showcase, the location of Verlander’s audition alone doesn’t tip the scale in the Yankees’ favor, but it shouldn’t be completely overlooked, either.
Geographical preference notwithstanding, the best offer is likely to win the bidding for Verlander at the end of the day. It’s unlikely he’d leave an extra year or tens of millions of dollars on the table to spurn a West Coast team to sign in New York, Boston or Toronto. Factors like geography, Spring Training locale and familiarity with teammates (e.g. Gerrit Cole in the Bronx, George Springer in Toronto) are often, albeit not always, more tiebreakers when weighing comparable offers.
Tigers fans, of course, undoubtedly would love to see a reunion in Detroit and are surely heartened to see Verlander’s preference for Florida-based Spring Training outfits. However, Rosenthal also suggests that the Tigers may not be “in as heavily” as other interested clubs.

I’m not ready for verlander to be a yankee.
Judge Judy
The homers allowed would be astronomical.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Judge Judy- not really a problem for me if there all solo shots. Verlander is an absolute beast. He’s already throwing 97 miles per hour after reconstruction surgery. Smh
dm0007
Spot on
Judge Judy
IF.
YS is the only stadium he has more homers than games pitched, more than 10 games played.
39 yr old righties who rely on fastballs pitching at yankees stadium will be fun to watch.
SportsFan0000
Not any more than Scherzer(former Detroit teammate) or Gerrit Cole (who Verlander beat for the Cy Young Award when they were teammates in Houston).
The Mets "Missed WAR"
I’d love to see him in Atlanta. I could see a 2-year $40M contract. I know he’s old but he’s had plenty of rest the past 2 seasons. His stuff looked great in his showcase. I think he was already hitting 97mph on the radar. It’s likely to go up another few mph. I would love to see some team just go all in and sign both Verlander and Scherzer.
RunDMC
In the FA Game, I picked LAD sign both Scherzer/Verlander, but I didn’t know about the FL preference, smh.
Benjamin101677
Atlanta can’t do anything with attempting to sign him until they figure out about Freeman. Also if they resign Freeman they may not have the money available to sign him and get a left fielder
802Ghost
Sure they can. I think payroll goes to $160-165m this year, which gives enough space for Verlander & Freeman, as well as other needs.
I think you’ll see Duvall and Pache and possibly Waters for OF until Acuna returns. I think Rosario played himself out of budget, and Soler will prob get a higher contract than makes sense. Between those two, I’d prefer Atlanta to keep Soler.
MLB needs to determine what they’re going to do with Ozuna, he’s a big factor in this decision (along with DH in NL) – between Ozuna and getting rid of Will Smith, Atlanta would save $29m.
There’s no reason for MLB to take this long.
iverbure
What’s the most innings someone has pitched post TJ age 38 or older? Does anyone know?
5toolMVP
i would think Tommy John himself leads that list by A LOT.
roughly 1800+ IP post TJ, and 1000+ IP age 38 or older.
ChiSox_Fan
Verlander wants to pitch for a winner.
Likely the White Sox.
Sox may need to move their spring training to Florida.
Dumpster Divin Theo
White Sox dodged a bullet not bringing in this diva. Unless your goal is to publicly embarass and humiliate Detroit media
Ducky Buckin Fent
It appears, @jamie, that you & I have takes that are diametrically opposed.

Dam straight, Jamie. Besides, he wants to pitch for a winner.
Steve7seven
He’s going back to Houston. 1yr 25m
BravesNomad
Atlanta also has a ST complex in Fla, and I believe his wife would enjoy all of the acting possibilities that go along with being in ATL. Could be a nice fit on a 2yr deal.
802Ghost
I don’t think Atlanta is going to get in on him, at the price point. I’d love to see him in Atlanta, but I just think it’ll be to much for them.
lemonlyman
Acting opportunities in ATL more than NY? C’mon now.
802Ghost
Off-peachtree shows are fire.
JeffreyChungus
If there was a team in Nashville he and Kate would be in like 3 Hallmark movies every year. Smh Manfred you’re missing a golden opportunity to expand
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Don’t forget about the Don Glover show “Atlanta.” That’s filmed in Georgia as well. The Walking Dead is filmed in Georgia. I’m sure they would love to have Kate as a zombie. A lot of production companies left California to get then tax breaks. The entire city of Lakewood has basically become a studio at this point. Making movies in Hollywood has become so cliche and played out now. No one cares about that place anymore.
dodger1958
Hollywood is still and will always be extremely important in the entertainment industry. Your hateful (and inaccurate) posts are tiresome. Virtually every major studio is located in CA.
tpaine69
Off peach tree? Is that like Buford Dr?
Redstitch108* 2
Yep. So what does Kate want? I would think she would prefer Los Angeles unless she plans to hang up the Hollywood stuff.
prov356
1958 – Hateful? Who said anything hateful?
jopeness
Atlanta was a underrated show. glad they got picked up for two more seasons.
802Ghost
are you talking to yourself?
BravesNomad
For movies and TV heck yes there. Kate isn’t a broadway actor. The opportunities for her would be huge in ATL. Off the top of my head- the walking dead, vampire diaries, teen wolf, fast and furious movies (parts) were all filmed in GA.Tyler Perry productions is also based in Ga. Plus she mentioned one time in an interview how much she enjoyed ATL when the Upton brothers were here. If JV would consider something like 2/ 35-40 total then why not give it a shot.
carllafong
Verlander has a home in Beverly Hills!
Redstitch108* 2
Kate’s not an “actor” at all. She might be an “actress” however. I go by what the Screen Actor’s Guild goes by btw.
RunDMC
ATL has been called the New Hollywood for quite some time due to 40% tax incentives — just look for the “Made in GA” peach logo at the end of whatever you watch. Most of the Marvel films were filmed at studios (including Tyler Perry’s new studio lot) in ATL, among many other things. NYC productions always have something going on, but the budgets are substantially different with the bigger budgets going to incentive-laden places like ATL that can allow them greater savings to expand their budgets. Unless Upton is wanting to get on Broadway or on an episode of Law & Order, she’s better in ATL.
RunDMC
A lot of acting coaches in ATL.
madmanTX
Yeah, on the Real Housewives.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Kate Upton is an actress now? Since when?

Check her IMDB bio.

She’s been like in one really bad Caneron Diaz movie. That qualifies her as an actress? Then so is Paris Hilton.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Paris Hilton is a spoiled Little brat And just lays there in her movie. Worst movie of its genre I’ve ever seen.
hockiechick
I thought Hollywood was boycotting Georgia.
BravesNomad
Some actors in Hollywood maybe, but that hasn’t stopped the current 58 movies and tv shows from being filmed in the Atlanta area.
Benjamin101677
If you re-sign Freeman; that will be about 30 million which will up payroll; Acuna gets more expensive this year plus still need to sign a outfielder so Justin probably too expensive
redsox for_life
Stroman and Matzs please Boston
HBan22
Please no to both of them. I don’t believe either one will be worth the contracts they get. Give me Anthony DeSclafani and Rich Hill instead. Same production as that duo for a fraction of the price.
Redstitch108* 2
Angels will sign Stroman. You heard it here first.
jimdevinmoriah
RedSox14
Tigers or Boston bound!
hyraxwithaflamethrower
He has limited years left. Even if the Tigers spend big this offseason, the White Sox are still the division favorites. Not sure Verlander would want to wait another year before true contention.
Mario93
Seems the Jays are always bidding with the Yankees, or at least trying to raise the price for the Yankees on guys they sign. Lol. Atkins is a troll.. they were in it with DJ last year, Yankees went 6 years with him to secure his services. Now they’re trolling the Yankees with Verlander. Lol. Go get em’ Atkins .. lol
mrmackey
Lol
Assdribble_Cabrera
@mrmackey who do you think you are, misterlol?
ctguy
Wishful thinking. The Yankees simply outbid the Jays. A lot of players may nit want to play in Canada anyway.
downsr30
Verlander in Atlanta makes a ton of sense in my opinion. Closest to home for him, contender and they need pitching. Plus, Atlanta likes short-term deals.
carllafong
What about his house in Beverly Hills? Does that work for him with the Angels?
Redstitch108* 2
BH is a tough commute to Anaheim. Even though only about 35 miles, it can take 2 hours or more. The traffic in LA is HORRIBLE.
prov356
Well, maybe he and Kate can stay with the Trouts in Newport coast until their house sells in Beverly Hills. That should take all of about 72 hours.

Well, vets want to win. So that rules out the Mets. Probably Dodgers. If he was smart he would go to the Jays
JonCor
As a Jays fan, I’m all for them bringing in Verlander. But if you think free agents are looking at the Dodgers as a place where they’re not a potential WS contender, you’re crazy.
MetsFan22

@mets22, if he wants to win, that rules out the Mets too
pburns65
with john Henry now trying to buy the penguins there is zero chance chaim is going to be allowed to spend any serious money. knew there was something up when they let Eduardo walk
kingken67
Why would you think a totally separate business decision would impact how the Sox are run? They aren’t pulling money away from the Sox to buy the Penguins. That’s not how things work at that level. The needs of the Sox and the budget they work with are totally separate from any other entity under the Fenway Sports Group.
JonCor
I assume many people, the OP included, think it’s just one guy with billions of dollars that says “I’m going to spend X amount on sports teams”, as opposed to a complex holding company.
Furthermore, I always think it’s hilarious when someone says something like “I knew there was something up when they let PLAYER A walk” … as if there isn’t a boatload of other teams vying for his services and as if there is just a bottomless pit of money. Especially to say something like that on November 17th in an offseason that will likely have a work stoppage and a very contentious and risky CBA negotiation. Like, come on … get a clue on how things work.
GASoxFan
I’d see both sides. The 900m capital to buy the penguins comes from somewhere, and it’s not like they’re issuing stock, or taking on piles of new partners.
So the question becomes, where does the money come from? Earnings from Liverpool and the red sox? Roush hasn’t won anything much in many years, so you know they aren’t kicking in a lot.
Maybe Henry wouldn’t let money flow to the sox to support elevated spending anways. But when you need additional cash flow to buy/pay off a new team, you can be sure Pittsburgh isnt paying for itself up front
JoeBrady
Probably bank loans. I remember, when Henry bought the Liverpool team. The haters came out in droves to suggest the RS were going to become a small market team. That was two WSCs ago.
Guys like Henry buy teams to grow the product, not to squeeze them dry.
802Ghost
Come on. Think.
Business A doesn’t have an outcome on business B when you’re at this level.
JoeBrady
It’s an absolutely silly concept. Tech companies buy other up-and-coming tech companies every day. They don’t shut down their own company to do so.
DarkSide830
I’d like him in Philly, especially if they can move Gibson in conjunction and get a cheap stopgap for the #5 spot.
VonPurpleHayes
Interesting. I’d rather count on a bounceback year from Nola and sign a cheaper #4-5 type while focusing on bolstering the outfield. Still, if Verlander signs in Philly, I wouldn’t complain.
carllafong
Moreno is the wealthiest man in the state of Arizona. a $220MM payroll would constitute using 0.2% of his net worth. In other words– .50 cents to you or me. If I was 73 and worth $4B I’d buy Verlander and Robbie Ray and a shortstop and not blink… and I think that’s where Moreno is… except for the shortstop!
JonCor
Your math is very confusing in this post.
vtadave
A quick Google search says his net worth is $3.6 billion. $220M/$3.6B = 6.1%.
He’d have to be worth in the range of $100 billion for your math to work.
DarkSide830
id still be fine with rolling with a more conservative approach in the field with Stott replacing Didi, bringing back Galvis and Odubel, and hoping for a Bohm rebound while maybe trying to save more payroll for deadline upgrades. granted, Verlander’s ask is starting to look quite high. Part of me just wants to see him in a Phillies unform though.
TennVol
Predict Jays for 2/40m with an opt out at end of year.
Dustyslambchops23
I have roger Clemons vibes on this, hopefully better performances around him
TennVol
Or, really push the envelope with 3/50m with 2 opt outs.
iverbure
Yeah 3 year deals for 38 year olds have probably historically worked well.
Bigtimeyankeefan
Kate is actually a Yankee fan who has lived in ny and loves ny. The Yankees are the favorite for verlander.
giantsphan12
Yankees are the favorite b/c yiu said so? I think he’d look pretty good in Orange and Black on the west side of the continent myself.
Joe says...
I also think Eric Cressey would have some influence as well. Hopefully it would work out better than the last time Cashman listened to Cressey when they signed Kluber.
tigerdoc616
No, not really, though that is the narrative the NY media pushed back in 2017. She wore a Yankee hat once and was photographed in it. That does not make her a Yankee fan. She has also worn Tigers and Astros hats as well. She’ll root for whomever is paying her husband to pitch.
She was born in Michigan and spent the first 7 years of her life here before moving to Florida. Family still has strong ties to this state including her uncle, US rep Fred Upton. So she still has a good reason to root for the Tigers.
Verlander will go where he gets paid, and Upton will root for that team. I doubt the Yankees are the favorites, but likely are in on him. I do not see any team as a favorite for him at this juncture. Heck, he hasn’t even rejected his QO yet. Still a chance he’ll remain in Houston. If anything, where he did his showcase bodes better for the Yankees odds of signing him more than any rooting interest Kate may have.
Joe says...
@tigerdoc616 I tend to agree on the NY media but Brian Hoch is starting to comment on the possibility. He is on of a very few NY media guys that should be paid attention to. Note though that he hasn’t said “favorite”, he’s just pointed out there is a good possibility.
Joe says...
@tigerdoc616 also actual Yankees fans know that Sherman, Heyman and others aren’t to be believed. It may be fun to think about some of the things they say, but still not taken seriously. All they are really good for is to give non Yankees fans someone to point to as NY media hype.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I will up the ante on Sherman, @Joe.
I think all actual Yankee fans know he’s actually a complete idiot. Has he published his article miscalculating the Yanks payroll like he does every year yet? He gets it wrong by tens of millions of dollars. Every single year, man.
MasterShake
This is what makes sports fans insufferable! “His Wife is a fan of xxx team so he’s signing here” you all sound ridiculous
Joe says...
I see you only took what you wanted from his post. He also said she’s lived in the area and loved it. If you don’t think that matters, you aren’t married.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Or, @Joe, you are one of those fellas with a trail of ex-wives in his wake. Like…ya know, some guys.
MetsFan22
This is what I would like the Mets to do
Baez stro Bryant marte sherzer
VonPurpleHayes
Lol that’s it? Just 4 blockbuster signings?
MetsFan22
They would only be adding 3 players
VonPurpleHayes
They would be adding 5 players. 0 of those guys are Mets right now. I get what you mean, but it’s still 5 huge signings that would put them way over the tax and not even guarantee them a playoff spot. I think they should be a bit wiser with their money.
Canosucks
That would put the Mets on the same spending spree as the federal government but China won’t buy the Mets debt!
MetsFan22
The Mets are going way over regardless if they get those players or not.. and If the mets get those 5 they would have as good of a chance to win as any team.
pinstripes17
Lol
iverbure
Imagine being so blissfully ignorant and thinking any team could do this?
Canosucks
No way Max Sherzer is going to sign with the Mets; that is Boras trying to drive the price up in the market with Cohen’s money.
As a long time Mets fan I am worried about desperate over spending and a 3rd and 4rth place finish.
At least I have the Angels and Thor out here…
tigerdoc616
As much as some Tigers fans would love to see him back in Detroit, he really doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Tigers. They already inked a pitcher in Rodriguez and while they could use another starter, they also could shift Tyler Alexander to the rotation and go the a left handed reliever. And while they are in the most favorable position regarding giving up draft picks to sign FA’s attached to a QO, I don’t see them giving up 3 picks, because they will be giving one up to land their SS. Tigers are not through building up so the picks would be helpful.
From Verlander’s side, sure he did love it here and probably would love to come back. But as much progress that was made last year, the Tigers are still not a serious contender and probably will not be for another 1-2 seasons. At his age, he should go chance another ring and go sign with a team more likely to contend.
Not sure how strong his preferences are. He has homes in south FLA and in Beverley Hills, so LA might be a good landing spot for him?
Pawsdeep
He makes a TON of sense on a three year deal in Detroit. Lead that staff, be the ace and postseason monster, and he would immediately make them a legit rotation.
He’s also worth more to Detroit than anyone else-can you imagine that first game back? He’d sell out Comerica every time he pitched and should absolutely be sought after by the Tigers. A 3 year, 65mil deal would be worth every penny.
Dustyslambchops23
they should only do that if they also get a legit SS. If they only have enough to add verlander, they would be better off getting someone who can help them for a longer period of time
Pawsdeep
Agreed. SS is the absolute biggest need.
Either backload a Correa contract for when miggy’s is off the books or just go hard after Story, and the money is there for a JV reunion.
iverbure
The amount of people here that think it’s smart to sign a 38 year old to a 3 year deal is scary. Please cite the example of a 38 year getting a 3 year deal first and if they were any good. Let alone one coming off of a major arm surgery. It’s baffling. No wonder why mlb went with all Ivy League gms. They aren’t stupid enough to only remember what the guy did when he was younger and healthy.
Pawsdeep
While I would agree with you 99% of the time, this is Justin Verlander we’re talking about. Tommy John is not a death sentence that it used to be, and more often than not pitchers are coming back even better.
You think he won’t be at least a 2 WAR pitcher next couple years? I’d bet on that he will. And on top of that, he’d be worth more to Detroit than any other team just because of revenue. Not to mention, he’d be mentoring a very young and very talented staff.
You don’t need to be any Ivy League scholar to look at this from more than a singular angle, even if you can’t comprehend more than that.
If he still throwing 97 mile an hour gas like he was at the showing, you think his other 3 + pitches that don’t rely on sheer force are gonna drop off the map?
Verly gone be ight
AL34
I agree, not a great idea. Two year deal at best, look at Cory Kluber did not even make the whole year
josebatista89
On a one year deal with an option for a second year year. I’d love to see him back with us and if your him why not.
nukeg
One thing I’ve learned as a baseball fan is that the older a player is, especially for a starting pitcher, the closer you want to be to family. He has a young daughter that they raise in Florida. He’s not coming to the West Coast.
SportsFan0000
Actually, Tigers were one of the best teams in the AL for most of the season and beat many playoffs teams in during short regular season series. Tigers had a winning record for just about every month but last April. If you throw out April, then the Tigers were already in the heat of the Wild Card race with Seattle.
Tigers, with these offseason improvements(trades, free agent signings) and the expected promotions of top prospects Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene are serious contenders for the Wild Card and the AL Central Division Title in 2022..
Pawsdeep
The tigers are literally just the signing of Correa/Story away from contending legitimately.
LGStros
I don’t think it’s that simple. They would certainly be closer, but it wouldn’t guarantee anything.
Pawsdeep
Of course. There’s 162 games and weird things happen.
But pencil Correa in and see what that lineup card looks like. The tigers would be as good as any team in the central.
LGStros
Yup. Whoever gets him will be lucky for sure. If Crane lets him walk, a lot of Astros fans aren’t going to be happy. (myself included)
Dustyslambchops23
They finished 16 games back in the division and 15 back in the wild card.
That’s extremely over generous to call them serious contenders this soon, the half a dozen teams above them in the standings are also going to try to improve.
Pawsdeep
Last half of the year they played much better. And take a look at them position by position. Candelario led the league in doubles at third, schoop is legit at 2b, torkelson and green should be impact bats as rookies, Badoo was excellent, Grossman was excellent, they’ve addressed the need at catcher, have a trio of stellar young arms and just signed ERod, and will be rolling out an above average bullpen even with no other signings.
I know if you just look at the record, you might not think so. But check out what they did the last half of the year against quality teams and they have addressed every need other than shortstop. The rebuild is over, that is the absolute last piece they need.
In two years, when turnbull comes back, skubal will be there #5 starter. That’s one hell of a rotation even without signing verlander. Sign verlander and there’s a lot of cost controlled pitching that can be flipped for some premier talent.
Tigers will contend next year
Pawsdeep
Or just sign Correa. ‍♂️
Look at their lineup with him in it-it’s damn good.
SportsFan0000
Look at the Tigers schedule and wins and losses last year. Just give the Tigers a modest .500 record for last April (while they were still getting their bearings and team together) and the Tigers were already in the Wild Card race last year.
From May-June Onward, the Tigers had one of the better winning records in baseball last year. The Tigers record since May 8, 2021 was 68-61 record since May 8 2021….certainly in the Wild Card race last year if they had just played break even 500 ball in April
josebatista89
YES we Will. I’m very happy about my Tigers.
josebatista89
Your also forgetting We have Gregory Soto, Jose Cisnero, coming out the pen. Jason Foley turned some heads. Also, we sweep the Yankees in the Playoffs.
carllafong
Might be interested in L.A.? You don’t think it got a lot more attractive with Syndergard coming on board? And they plan to add two more arms. If they signed Verlander and Robbie Ray (they are trying) they become a beast with Trout, Ohtani, Rendon. The man has a house in Beverly Hills and his wife is a super model who works out of L.A. and NY., so it would appear a lot of boxes are checked. And spring training in the warm weather of AZ and warmer climate for April-June in California may be better for his arm?
josebatista89
I respectfully disagree we aren’t that far away. I think Verlander makes a ton of sense back home. Why, well we aren’t that far away. Mize, Skbual showed major signs. E Rod is good but isn’t an ACE. He could come in on a one or two year deal compete and be a mentor to the young guys.
Vizionaire
he will sign with the marlins!

Kate anxious to get that Atlanta based acting career rolling!
Either Tyler Perry big mOOma movie or new housewives show……. Mmmmm….
That’s about it.
BravesNomad
You really don’t know much about the ATL tv and movie market do you? Not trying to be snarky, but asking a serious question. The acting markets in ATL are growing by leaps and bounds. I still have friends down there that are full time professional extras and they make a really nice living for it. Just take a moment and look up all the tv shows and movies that have been filmed in GA.
Ronk325
I’ve never been a big fan of Verlander and have consistently rooted against him going back to 2011. With that said, if he signs with the Yankees all will be forgiven
SportsFan0000
The reason you were never a Verlander Fan is because Verlander, with the Tigers, has been a “Yankee killer” who knocked the Yankees our of the playoffs in multiple years: 2006, 2012 and other years. Yankees were stopped in their tracks many years and knocked out of the playoffs by Verlander and the Tigers during the Tigers last playoffs runs.
The Yankees could have traded for Verlander before he went to Houston. But, Cashman and the Yankees, as usual, “low balled” the Tigers in trade proposals so the Tigers sent Verlander to the Astros.
carllafong
Don’t expect him to mention you in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech!
ctguy
You’re right. I forgot about that. It’s been so long since the Tigers were actual playoff contenders
Ronk325
Well yes that’s obviously a big part of why I’ve never liked Verlander. Beyond that he just comes off as a very smug person and he has a punchable face. Once again though all will be forgiven if he signs with the Yankees
Bustedstuff88
As a midwesterner, im SOOOOO tired of the repeated “He wants to play on X coast”….
yeah, i know I live in flyover country. Just a disgruntled observation that the talent draining towards either ocean is super tiresome and is doing nothing to ignite the fires of baseball passion between california and new york. .
That is all.

Any Midwest team should be yelling and screaming against a salary cap. If you can’t out spend to get the players you want to your city players with similar offers are going to pick location. Not to mention there’s some states with no income tax which gives teams give advantages in salary caps.
dragonfan96
He will sign with Detroit. I heard he was in Michigan yesterday

Been in the league 16 years, “…familiar with teammates” applies to a lot of teams other than Jays and Yanks
Where do the rumors that he prefers an east coast team or a team with Florida spring training site come from? This info seems to rule out the Giants and Angels
SportsFan0000
Verlander also has a home in Los Angeles.
His wife’s acting aspirations would point to
Los Angeles, New York
OR Boston, Toronto etc…
Detroit would be a great story.
But, the Tigers will not be outbidding other teams for a 39 year old pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery.
geg42
He would make sense for the Giants. They have done very well with pitchers coming off of injuries. Kapler encourages pitchers to actually say what they have left, not just macho posturing about being able to stay in the game.
Simple Simon
Yes, definitely would help SF, but the Giants under Zaidi buy low. Plus they need 4 or 5 SP’s not just ONE.
SportsFan0000
SF Giants could be a player for Verlander with huge amounts coming of their payroll and big needs in the Rotation. SF is only a 1 hour flight from LA for acting purposes.
Some projects are filmed in the SF area.
Simple Simon
I don’t understand why a guy who has already made $292,515,000 (per Bas-Ref) would want to squeeze out the top dollar rather than pick where he is most comfortable with team, location, and opportunity, in some order.
Tough squeeze for Atlanta who is trying to meet Freeman’s $$/length of contract. On a somewhat lesser scale, after receiving (before tax) $133,634,000, he is debating $180M against $200M? I don’t get it. He’s happy in Atlanta, they love him there, and he has a shiny new ring. Money he takes from the organization is money Atlanta can’t spend on the rest of the team.
Dustyslambchops23
Simply put the contract that you sign is not just for you and your family, you’re right there isn’t a huge difference between millions at that point.
However, pushing contracts and precedent does impact every player behind you, all the way down to tee ball. It’s a player and agents duty to not only secure the right situation but also a contract that pushes the money forward for all future players.
Nolan Ryan’s contract set a bar in the 80’s for $1million plus per season that not only raised the ceiling but also helped raise the floor for future pitcher contracts. May not seem that important but to the pitchers who only get a cup of coffee or a few years before injury, the extra dollars make a huge impact
SportsFan0000
Atlanta has wealthy corporate ownership. They can spend if they want to spend. They are just “going cheap”.
BravesNomad
Apparently you’re new- Liberty has NO SAY over payroll decisions. That is all on Terry McGuirk because the team sets it’s own payroll based on profits and paying down their debt ratio for the stadium.
bravesnation nc
I won’t even allow myself to think about how Verlander in a rotation of Morton, Fried, Soroka and whoever else. Need of leader signed. But Damn would that be a 3 headed monster.
BravesNomad
4 headed don’t you mean?
logo69
Ian Anderson over Soroka. There’s a legitimate chance Soroka never comes back as the pitcher he was.
bravesnation nc
Need our leader “Freeman” signed.
SportsFan0000
Freeman is the new Chipper Jones. Braves would be crazy not to sign Freeman,
LGStros
No idea why that deal hasn’t been done yet. Boggles the mind.
Yankeesniper
Everybody wants to be Tom Brady.
Pass on a 39 year old TJ player. He may start off great, but by mid-season will go south and leave a hole in your rotation.
bhambrave
Whatever you say, Tinky-Winky.
The Baseball Fan
White Sox replace Rodon
Dumpster Divin Theo
Nope. Much better off resigning Rodon. Rodon’s not a Diva.
gtb1
5 1/3 innings for 66 million dollars. Didn’t show up to support his teammates. Originally heard he felt he owed Crane something for taking all of that money for doing almost nothing but clearly doesn’t seem to be the case now. Crazy to see that he could throw 97 mph at his own showcase but couldn’t perform at any level for his teammates in the World Series less than 2 weeks earlier. I know it’s a business. He was a terrible investment the last two years for Houston. Hall of Famer for sure but he let his teammates down this time around.
SportsFan0000
Giver him a break. He had Tommy John and was rehabbing.
He had not pitched in game competition in 1 1/2 years?!
He was not ready to pitch in the playoffs or World Series without risking a career ending injury.
His teammates did fine without him.
They were a few clutch hits away from another WS title.
Verlander does not hit.
Houston had very competitive pitching in the playoffs and WS.
It would be like slamming Lance McCullers Jr for not pitching while hurt.
GASoxFan
After 18 months or so off rehabbing from TJ, you mean to tell me that less than 2 weeks later he’s miraculously turned a corner to fire off 2 dozen pitch BP showcase hitting 97 mph but couldn’t come in fir a relief appearance or two in the WS?
It wasn’t about ability, it was about reserving himself for the FA showcase. If he was in a real game and not effective it would’ve stunted the FA deal. There’s no batters in the showcase.
Dustyslambchops23
Wasn’t it closer to 14 months after surgery?
And it’s not 2 weeks in question it’s more like 6 weeks since he would have had to be back on the 40 man and they would have to put him on the WS roster. You’re going to let a guy who’s been off that long pitch in the biggest series of the year? If you hate him you him that’s fine, he stole my gf I hate him too, but none of what you wrote is reasonable
AL34
Don’t worry I heard the whistles going off after the Red Sox threw their pitches. I saw their pitchers touching their pony tails and face right before every pitch. They cheated their rear ends off enough without Verlander. It is amazing how crappy those same pitchers looked a week later.
Cohn Joppolella
I’m predicting he goes with whoever offers the most money.
carllafong
Genius, Wile E. Coyote– sheer genius!
Cohn Joppolella
I’m known for my bold predictions.
Camden453
Braves *will* spend now that they’re fully beyond the rebuild phase. That’s been their MO in the past
SportsFan0000
I predict where ever Verlander goes, he will win another World Series ring.
Then, Verlander goes back to Detroit to cap off his career in ’23, ’24 or ’25 and wins an additional World Series ring.
Verlander will be like Jack Morris winning World Series rings with multiple teams
(Morris won WSrings for Detroit, Minnesota and Toronto).
Blue Jays could be a player for Verlander too!
(short flight to NYC. And many film and TV projects filmed in Toronto).
bhambrave
It’d be fun to see Justin and Charlie back together again.
TheBoatmen
Kate has a cottage in Muskoka, 2 hour drive from Toronto. Think we know where they are going. Replacement for Matz.
SportsFan0000
I think Verlander wins at least another ring with another ballclub and then caps his career in Detroit in ’24 or ’25 with another ring..
UpUpnHeaHea
Atlanta has already had 2 Uptons, time for a 3 rd !!!!
Scot04
Would love to see the Mariners come out and surprise everyone by signing Verlander
bobtillman
It’s down to Baltimore or Pittsburgh, IMHO.
Rangers29
Don’t laugh… but the Mets should be all over this. With Syndergaard and potentially Stroman gone they are gonna need some big dogs in their rotation and Verlander could easily be just that.
LGStros
While I’d like him back in Houston, I’m also a realist. They can save that $$ and get some other pitching help. I think the fact that he didn’t even show up to cheer on his teammates said a lot to them and to the organization.
Camden453
Braves, Dodgers, or Jays
LGStros
Of those 3 teams, I’d guess Jays.
prov356
This should be called the conjecture board.
josebatista89
He’s either going to the Yankees, Blue Jay’s or Tigers. My guess is if the Tigers offer him two years he will come back.
48-team MLB
Braves/White Sox would be epic next year.
crazywarrior
I think either he or Sherz, endup in SF, maybe. With guys like Sherz and Verlander, they want to play for teams that give them the best chance at a ring- pedigree, org, culture, and there are only a handful of teams that can offer that
JimmyForum
Another player playing the family card. Good lord. Just retire and work at the local Best Buy if being away from your family while making around 274 million dollars thus far in your career.
Old York
Wanting to be on a team that wants to win is really a random chance in MLB playoffs. Look at what happened in October. Braves had the worst record of all the teams and they won it all. Don’t count out the D-Backs & Orioles.
tymeslayer
Maybe the Rockies would like to sign him? Oh wait, I’m sure Justin would like to play for a major league team. I think he’s still got some gas in the tank and has enough craftiness to compete wherever he ends up.
KD17
Verlander back in Houston pretty much wraps up the AL West Division. It also increases the odds that Houston will play the Wildcard winner in the playoffs.
Great move giving him $25M. Congrats to Houston. All other contenders in the AL should be concerned that one of the elite SPs available went to Houston and not to their team.
