The 2021-22 offseason is unlike any we’ve seen in recent history, with players and teams somewhat flying blind as the expiration of the 2016-21 collective bargaining agreement looms at 11:59pm ET on Dec. 1. Because of the widely expected lockout and uncertainty as to what changes will be made to key economic facets of Major League Baseball — the luxury tax, the arbitration system, the potential implementation of a salary floor — there’s been fairly prevalent speculation that the majority of major free-agent dealings would only occur after a lockout has been resolved.
That’s not necessarily the case, ESPN’s Jeff Passan writes in his takeaway column from this week’s GM Meetings in California. To the contrary, there’s a sense that top free agents Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and a few prominent starting pitchers could come off the board while the current CBA is still in play. Similarly, some in the industry expect that at least some of the offseason’s most aggressive teams (e.g. Rangers, Tigers, Mariners, Blue Jays) could be highly active in the days and hours leading up to the current agreement’s expiration, per Passan.
To some extent, it’s only logical to see the markets for certain top-of-the-scale free agents crystallize more quickly than others. Seager is one of the top two names on the market, while Semien is coming off the best season of any of the “second tier” of shortstops — those expected to sign north of $100MM but well beneath the likely $300MM+ price range of Seager and Carlos Correa.
Demand figures to be robust for both Seager and Semien. And, with likely interest from teams that won’t have immediate luxury-tax concerns regardless of who they sign, thanks to fairly wide-open payroll outlays, not every interested team will be overly concerned with waiting to see how the luxury tax unfolds. A lack of luxury-tax concern among Texas, Detroit, Seattle and Toronto surely dovetails with expectations that they could act more quickly than, say, the Yankees or Dodgers — both of whom will be keenly interested in the particulars of a restructured competitive balance tax.
Both Seager and Semien are of interest to the Yankees, Passan reemphasizes, though that much is well known by this point. Yankees GM Brian Cashman effectively kicked off the team’s offseason by announcing his desire to improve at shortstop, and it’d frankly be more surprising to learn that the Yanks were “out” on any one of the top free-agent shortstops than to hear they’re still in the mix.
There’s certainly no guarantee that either Seager or Semien will sign prior to Dec. 1, but it’s also in many ways sensible for both teams and players to want to strike early. Assuming there is indeed a lockout, MLB free agency would resume at a rather frenzied pace. There’d be obvious benefit to teams having cost certainty and avoiding some of that chaos by checking a big-ticket item off the list early in the process. From the players’ vantage point, there has to be concern about getting lost in the shuffle — particularly among second- or third-tier names. Furthermore, as is the case every winter, free agents tend to prefer the certainty of knowing where they (and their families) will be for the foreseeable future.
Even from an agency standpoint, early deals make some sense, if the demand is sufficient enough to drum up a palatable offer. For instance, the Boras Corporation represents both Seager and Semien, but they’ll also be negotiating deals for Max Scherzer, Nick Castellanos, Michael Conforto, Carlos Rodon, Yusei Kikuchi and James Paxton, among others. It’s a lot to juggle in what would be a condensed free-agent period, post-lockout. It’s easy to see the appeal of an early contract or two for any agency with a lengthy client list this winter.
To this point, there’s been little in the way of actual activity, save for a trio of one-year deals for Andrew Heaney (Dodgers), T.J. McFarland (Cardinals) and Joely Rodriguez (Yankees). Teams and agencies acting with a bit of increased urgency, however, carries the potential for a perhaps brief flurry of deals in the next three weeks, even if the prevailing wisdom is that the majority of the offseason’s heavy lifting will come in the wake of, and not in advance of, a lockout and subsequent transaction freeze.

Maybe add one more player. Maybe Mark Appel.
iverbure
So does Passan explain why he thinks free agents will sign prior to dec 1? Because that goes against the thought process of every other free agency before the cba is signed. Prior years when the cba could be up teams were hesitant to sign players. Unless you’re a player who doesn’t want to play with the Yankees or dodgers and why wouldn’t you?
cory-5
There’s a few factors with the main one being there’s a very high chance of a lockout. Signing a key player now gets them on the roster before having to deal with the fallout post lockout. Agents see it as a chance to get big contracts while they understand the CBA. Majority of times, contracts of previous CBAs have been grandfathered in so it looks like agents and teams are operating under this assumption.
iverbure
Given so much uncertainty with the rules I doubt really either side will be all that much motivated to sign a massive deal early. If a guy has a pick attached it hurts his value and even if it knocks a team or two out of the bidding that could be a year or two off contract. If teams don’t have to fear losing a pick and more importantly the slot money that comes with the pick then they’ll pursue the player more.
ayrbhoy
Yes he does….in the section where he talks about (aggressive) teams like Seattle, DET, TX and TOR. These teams appear to have very little guaranteed contracts and therefore plenty of money to spend so the issue of luxury tax will not concern them. The CBA deadline won’t impact them as much as the teams w larger payrolls who will likely wait to see what develops in the CBA meetings.
Stat_head
If the luxury tax cap comes down, like MLB has proposed, the Yankees won’t be signing a big deal. They’ve got $96 million tied up in 4 players and need to field a team. If the new CBA has the cap continue to increase then they’ll be in the market. They have to wait. As a player, if the cap doesn’t increase your market gets tight and you may have to settle for much less. Plenty of players have seen that happen recently.

I don’t believe Jeff Passan’s speculation.
User 3921286289
I have to think Jeff Passan is right when he says a few of these guys will sign before December 1st. He does a lot of research and he doesn’t usually throw out bones for the sake of clicks like people like Bob Nightengale do. Nightengale is wrong more often than he is right. I don’t know how he still has a job. You can usually guarantee that if Nightengale is reporting it, it’s not going to happen. But Passan has a lot more integrity, even if he writes for ESPN. ESPN has really gone downhill in recent years. They seem more interested in promoting their own on-air talent than actually covering sports. Count how many pictures there are of Stephen A. Smith on the front page of ESPN’s website next time you look on it. There are literally 5 pictures of Stephen A. Smith on there right now. Who cares what he thinks? Who decided he was an expert on anything? At least he doesn’t really cover baseball, but when he does, it sure is cringe inducing. I think one player not mentioned in the article who is likely to sign before the collective bargaining agreement expires is Javy Baez. That’s only if the Mets are able to sign him. If they don’t sign Javy Baez before December 1st, it means he probably won’t be wearing a Mets uniform next year. And some of these players won’t want to deal with the uncertainty of waiting until who knows when, they would rather have the security of knowing who they are going to be suiting up for next season before a lockout possibly happens. It will definitely be a frenzy for sure if they hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement on February 7th when pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to their teams literally a week later. Can you imagine how busy all the agents will be trying to get their clients placed? They might not have the time to really get the best contract they could get because all the teams are going to be calling everybody and it’s pretty likely that it will get really chaotic or something. I sure wouldn’t want to be the agent or the player who ends up getting shafted because I waited too long to sign. Time is of the essence for some of these agents and the players they represent. Definitely not all of them, but some of them will probably get a better deal if they don’t wait until the last minute.
philliesfan215
Just want to chime in, while I agree with your general premise on ESPN and SAS is definitely not an expert on most sports, the dude knows Basketball. I don’t find him an expert on any of the other 3 major sports and I don’t like his ESPN hot take personality but the guy was a phenomenal basketball reporter before that
spidertac
No one knows when anyone is signing. It’s purely speculation on their part.
seamaholic 2
Not true. Some writers (Passan included) are very plugged into the most important source of information on when players are signing: Their agents. If the agents are telling him that players are going to sign soon, it’s pretty likely they have multiple good offers on the table and are leaning that way.

Normally like Passan, but don’t think he is right on this one. I do think a handful of mid range free agents will sign. But any big name FA’s are going to have to be given whatever they demand for them to sign before December 1 and it will have to be by teams that will not have a concern regarding the CBA, like my Tigers. Short of that, they will want their market to fully play out and that isn’t going to happen before December 1.
For Love of the Game
I think that all makes sense. High-end free agents would have to be wowed with an overwhelming offer to give up their flexibility. Rumblings from MLB and MLBPA suggest that a new CBA is going to be more player-friendly so top free agents shouldn’t be desperate to sign now.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I like Correa. He is a great player, personable, likable with charisma, however……now is not the time. Better to try to buy Vlad’s contract from the Blue Jay’s for that money……

crazybaseballgal
I can’t stand Correa!
Thesecondjamie
Plenty of teams are def wary of signing before the new system is in place. This means less traction for the big names like Seager and Semien.
They’re gonna wait til everyone is in the market so the teams can outbid each other.
Plus I believe Correa will be the first one to sign. Probably with the Yankees (sigh), although as a tigers fan I don’t think Detroit should do any more than 7 years 270MM on any one player, no matter how good.
Sunday Lasagna
If the Yankees sign Correa and give Judge the contract he’s expected to get, there is a strong possiblity that the Yankees will spend $130M per year from 2023 -2027 on just 4 players, Stanton, Cole, Correa & Judge.. There are only 8 teams in Baseball that had their entire team payroll above that in 2021.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
@Professor Falken: I agree. As a non Yankees fan I almost hope they do sign another massive free agent. U less they plan on spending like the Dodgers for a decade straight (which I very much doubt) winning with those top heavy long term contracts will be completely unsustainable. Even dipping under the luxury tax once every 3rd year will make that team noncompetitive.
CluHaywood
If Boros feels that the CBA will be worse for his clients, they will buck the trend and sign early.
seamaholic 2
It’s not a question of him being right or not. He’s definitely “right,” in the sense that all he’s doing is reporting what he’s hearing, which is likely from agents. The agents could be blowing smoke at him, or they could be wrong about their clients, but Passan is just reporting what he’s heard. He’s not guessing personally.
smuzqwpdmx
All signs point to the next CBA being worse for player salaries than the current one — they’re just negotiating how much worse. It’s smarter to get your 8 year contract signed before the new rules apply, and waiting could cost tens of millions of dollars.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
And this is exactly what makes a situation both interesting and obviously impossible to predict. One poster above says “Rumblings from MLB and MLBPA suggest that a new CBA is going to be more player-friendly so top free agents shouldn’t be desperate to sign now,” and here we have “All signs point to the next CBA being worse for player salaries than the current one…”

I don’t feel like Seager or Semien are the long term answers for the Yankees at SS. Neither play strong defensively and have their issues. Seager has been hurt a lot and has always been a candidate to move off SS at some point and Semien is older and plays better at the keystone. If I were Cashman I’d either go all in on Correa or find a light hitting glove first SS and fill the rest of the lineup out with hitters.
DarkSide830
where did you get the impression that Semien wasnt a good defender?
Crunchtime1969
Where did you get the impression that the Yankees care about defense?
mcdusty49
Semien played great defense this season…as a second basemen lol…I was discussing the Yankees long term options at SS…Semien isn’t as strong defensively as a SS
Poster formerly known as . . .
Well, if you haven’t seen him play most of his innings in the field, you can rely on whatever dubious fielding metrics you choose.
Since 2018, the Fielding Bible credits him with 13 Defensive Runs Saved at shortstop, ranking him 7th of 19 qualifiers. Or you can go by Def, which ranks him 6th. Or you can go by UZR/150, which ranks him 5th. Or you can go by RZR, which ranks him first. Or you can go by OAA, which says he’s terrible (36th of 41).
My policy is to withhold judgment until I can watch the player enough to get a real-time impression of his ability — unless all the metrics say that he’s great or awful. Then I’ll lean in the direction of suspecting the metrics are telling me something meaningful. Generally, I think “advanced” fielding metrics are woefully unreliable.
re-tweeted cleats
The Yankees most likely will go for a defense first SS like Simmons. They seem to be concentrating on 1st base with bids for Rizzo or Freeman or a trade for Olsen.
CalcetinesBlancos
You think the A’s would have stuck with Semien at SS even when he couldn’t hit if his defense was bad?
mcdusty49
His defense wasn’t great but he improved before nose diving in 2020. Sure that was an anomaly of a season but it’s hard to imagine a 31 year old becoming a perennial gold glove SS over the course of a 5 year contract because he won one as a 2B
Poster formerly known as . . .
Who said anything about Semien needing to be a perennial Gold Glove shortstop? Correa’s been playing shortstop for seven years and won his first Gold Glove this year. There aren’t a lot of Ozzie Smiths out there.
mcdusty49
If you read my original comment it was about the Yankees looking for a glove first SS. They have a lot of bats, their defense has been an issue so if I were Cashman I wouldn’t tie up long term money in either Seager or Semien as a SS of the future. You could’ve spared yourself the need to feel like you needed to spout off a bunch of metrics if you just read what the original comment said
StreakingBlue
Yeah Seager is hurt sooo often. BS. Yankees should just give up,and rebuild into a team that hits instead of being a boom or bust team.

rememberthecoop
Semien is a solid not spectacular SS but he can get the job done. Of course we know he’s great offensively and everything I’ve read seems to indicate that he is also a strong clubhouse leader. His AAV should rival the others, but at a shorter term. I’m guessing 5 years, 150.
Dustyslambchops23
The data on Semien’s most recent work at SS contradicts your opinion
Poster formerly known as . . .
Which data? His most recent full season at short was 2019. He was credited with 7 DRS, 8th rank among qualifiers; 5.0 UZR/150, 7th rank; .802 RZR, 2nd rank; 117 Out-of-Zone plays, 5th rank; 14.1 Def, 4th rank; .981 FP, 4th rank; 436 Assists, 1st rank; 82 DP, 4th rank. The only metric that ranked him poorly was Statcast’s OAA, even though Statcast also ranked him in the third tier in Success Rate (78%), tied with Correa, Ahmed and Simmons.
rememberthecoop said he was “solid not spectacular.” Which of the metrics other than OAA contradicts that opinion? 2020 was a half-season in which he played through pain in his side. If you want to be technical about “most recent,” his RZR in 2021 was .879 and he was credited with 1 DRS in 134 innings.
mcdusty49
You’re obviously one of those guys that feels the need to be the smartest guy in the room lol. I was saying that Semien isn’t known to be a stellar defensive SS and he’s also 31, so tying up money on him long term isn’t the move I’d make if I were the Yankees GM
Mickey777
Like your thoughts but if you take a light hitting defensive minded SS then what do you do at catcher? What I mean is Sanchez as a first string catcher is untenable, therefore the Yanks will need almost certainly to acquire a defensive minded catcher, now you have 2 empty spots in your lineup. That’s OK in some divisions but not in the AL East.
mcdusty49
They definitely need a better defensive catcher. I don’t mind giving up the SS and C spot for defensive players. If you have premium bats in the other spots you should be able to make up for it

Unless the buyer is the Dodgers, it seems like every other team is at least mindful of the CBT level. If that’s up for grabs in negotiations, it seems less likely that the big market buyers would go in early. Unless they got a discount., which is dubious
55bums
In the Dodgers case, do they re-sign any of their major free agents most of whom are aging stars.
Kershaw retires and the rest sign for numbers more than the Dodgers should spend
They go to second tier FA’s as replacements e.g. Semian at second for less than $200 M in lieu of Seager and if they can’t re-sign Turner next year they have their future SS
And a couple of trades for key positions such as 2/3 starter e.g. Castelle (sp) from Cincy
Marte is another lesser case OF option
Who knows they could fall under the tax in prep for younger guys entering FA next year
Sunday Lasagna
If MLB suspends Trevor Bauer that’s $40M off the books for 2022. Kershaw & Jansen made $51M in 2021 and both may be gone. Seager & Taylor are another $21M That’s $112M off the books. A year later David Price and his $32M per year comes off too. Possible $144M erased. It’s over half their payroll. . They already acquired Trea Turner to replace Seager, Gavin Lux played like Taylor the last 2 months of the season, Buehler & Urias are a top 1-2 punch in the rotation, They can bring back Scherzer or just let Gonsolin, Pepiot & Heaney fill out the rotation.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Dodgers are smart, they could sign Corey Seager to a long contract if the value is there. Hope Taylor and Kershaw are back but I think we will not know until next year.
averagejoe15
Sox are paying half of Price’s salary so it’s only $16m coming off the books for tax purposes after next year.
Dustyslambchops23
There is risk to waiting or going too early.
If by chance the new agreement punishes top teams even further for spending but creates a floor that all teams would get in to. That won’t affect the majority of FA except for the top ones. So there is a scenario where Seager and Correa will have bigger markets now vs dec 1. But it’s really anyone’s guess and just a risk either way, I see most of them waiting though.
Prospectnvstr
There’s absolutely positively no risk in signing early. So what if another FA signs a longer or higher AAV contract? I mean, really, we’re talking about (10+,20+ & even 30+) MILLIONS of dollars per year for multiple years. These ballplayers are getting very well compensated for being the best in their profession (& for our entertainment).
Dustyslambchops23
That’s not a reasonable take.

I can see those 2 wanting yo sign pre lockout. Have some certainty. Maybe they can negotiate a high signing bonus to have the cash to sit out the lockout. It’s possible.
Also possible that both these guys are Boras clients and this is a ploy to increase the early bidding before lockout without signing. And then have a higher starting point when FA resumes.
Obviously, I’m assuming a lockout by the way. Pretty easy bet.
And I just turned down the Mets GM gig as well.

Side effect of analytics and “buy in” from the players to play only when the analytics indicate. ‘Qualified’ (502 plate appearances) Batters for 2011 = 145, for 2021 = 132. 9% drop. Qualified (162 innings pitched) Pitchers for 2011 = 93, for 2021 = 39. 59% drop. Stats determine value, the number of players who are getting enough at bats and enough innings to put up big numbers are diminishing. It’ll be interesting to see what Farhan Zaidi does?
Mr. Zaidi has a ton of cash to spend and a aggressive ownership that wants to win. They will green light anything he wishes. By the way, word around the campfire is that the Giants were not impressed with Kris Bryant. So Bryant getting a huge payday from the Giants will not be happening.
ltully789
That report about Bryant was based on a bit of a misinterpretation of what Andrew Baggarly reported. Baggarly quickly responded by saying that the Giants were impressed by Bryant overall but were underwhelmed by his defense and have some concerns about whether his swing will age well. So I think the Giants are unlikely to sign Bryant to a long-term deal but their assessment of him wasn’t nearly as negative as some have reported.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
The Giants were never going to throw 200 million at Bryant and I think that some team will come close to that. Watch for the Giants to sign several quality players on shorter cheaper contracts. If there is a longer contract, it will likely be a starting pitcher.
ltully789
Agree with you. I don’t think Zaidi is going to throw a lot of money at Bryant on a long-term deal – but someone will.

I support the FREE MARKET.
You can not tell an owner what he has to spend and you can not limit what a FA player can ask to be paid.
Floors and ceilings do that.
If there is a lockout, fans should boycott.
ltully789
Except MLB isn’t a “free market.” The 30 teams are all part of the same business.
The Yankees and Rays aren’t like Ford and GM – they’re more like Cadillac and Chevrolet, in that they are linked in a common enterprise.
redsorbust
Yes, yes and yes! Did I mention yes? LOL.
TheRealMilo
All this FREE MARKET as a religion talk is great – but what I support is a system that holds all ownership groups to some standard of fielding competitive teams. Bottom feeding teams like the Rangers should see some type of penalty (financial or draft pick) for running out a payroll under $50m. If the owners don’t like this economic operating system, then they are FREE to sell to a group that values winning.
For Love of the Game
Milo, you only support a free market if they operate according to your rules? What about the freedom of fans to not go to games, watch them on TV, or buy team merch if they don’t like the product on the field? In your “free market” philosophy, would you add some socialism where big-market teams have to pay small-market teams if their fans won’t support the team, or is yours just a one-way street?
Owners should be free to run their teams, players can decide who they work for and for how much, and fans can choose to buy or not buy. That’s a free market all the way around.
TheRealMilo
What I like more than your Free Market Evangelism is baseball prospering as a sport. Having a system where half the league is tanking by July 4th will kill the sport. Fans can opt to not attend these bottom feeders’ games – but guess what – these owners will still make money off of national TV and licensing deals. They’ll still sucker or extort local governments into stupid public financed stadium deals and eventually cash out with a nice return. What happens along that path is widespread fan disinterest and MLB declining to an NHL like status.

In the past 11 years, the Rangers finished 1st four times, and went to the WS I am not sure you know what you are talking about.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
They definitely should not reward teams for tanking. It is totally unfair to fans and good players looking to be employed at a fair price.
I have suggested before that they add a lottery to the drafts. For example, bottom 5 enter a lotto, then add.the.next.lowest team as the order is established by chance drawing.
No more guarantee to get top pick for stinking!
redsorbust
Only problem with that logic is that leaves small market teams out in the cold pretty much like now. I feel confident that the Kansas City’s and Pittsburg’s of the league would love to throw around hundreds of millions of dollars on any player they wanted.

The fans are already boycotting. Thousands stay home rather than pay high prices for tickets and food at the park. There is push back against requiring every cable subscriber to pay for the RSN fee in their bill. Al a carte television via cutting the cord is here.
There are only so many billionaires willing to own a team. The ones that are probably do not live in your market, If you invest a billion it has to make a 10% Return on Investment. Managing the payroll responsibly is one of the tools owners have to ensure the sport survives, Reducing their investment thru taxpayer subsidies is another, Communities should buy all 30 teams from the billionaires. Then the politicians can raise taxes to subsidize the players demands for a bigger paycheck, How will that go over?
If these high dollar FA shortstops all go wanting for a $30M contract, it would be a good thing,

If there is a lockout, what would we have to boycott?
Metsin777
The tigers are getting none of the top guys, I don’t know why they are even included in the article
Hard to walk with four balls
Because they have the money to spend.
…but you’re likely right… they signed AJ to manage the team but that’s where they stop.
HAHAHAHAHA
For Love of the Game
Because the Dodgers, Yankees, and Padres want to have $300 mill.-plus payrolls and no one good will sign anywhere else? Riiiiiight…

Mets in 7-
I’m sure you will say whoever the Tigers sign is not “a top guy”.

I agree. Don’t want many years at many dollars… i.e.- Cabrera, unless his name is Trout.

“Prevailing Wisdom”? Isn’t he the brother of the Cubs 3rd baseman?
Mickey777
Let’s be honest no one has any idea how this whole fiasco will turn out, still cost nothing to speculate.
As for the Yankees I still think they will trade for Olsen, before November 19. I believe that’s the date you have to finalize your 40 man roster ( please correct me if I’m wrong). They will hope to trade either candidates that should need protection or players that on the 40 man roster that they might be able to afford to lose.
Remember the A’s still have to field a team next year, so players that have limited appeal like Tyler Wade, Luke Voit, and Gary Sanchez might be players that could help swing the deal. Admittedly these would NOT be the main pieces. They might also be able to turn these players into trade chips at the trade deadline next year, if there is a next year. There are also players on the 40 man roster like Albert Abreu, Louis Gil, Michael King, and Yoendes Gomez that the A’s might have a more sustained interest in.
Still the trade would also have to include AT LEAST one top prospect like Volpe or Peraza. Taking a bad contract like Andruss might also be part of the deal.
What do you think?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Voit is a talented player but the As like them cheaper and younger.
Mickey777
You are right, perhaps the Yanks could pay part of his salary. If Voit stays healthy, the A ‘s could turn him into a prospect(s).
slider32
Yanks could target Olson, Reynolds, Castillo and Lopez and see if their is a fit. I would think players like Volpe, Perazza, Dominquez, Voit, German, Gomez, Cabrera, Gleyber Torres, Gallo, Sanchez, and other minor league players could draw some interest.
JoeBrady
Tyler Wade, Luke Voit, and Gary Sanchez ….. Albert Abreu, Louis Gil, Michael King, and Yoendes Gomez
==================================================
There will be almost no interest by the As, in those players. Voit & Sanchez would have negative value, since the As won’t want to pay them.
Volpe and Perza will have some value, but you’d have to do better than that.
Mickey777
Abreu and Gil both throw over 100 mph, and make no money. I think the A’s and many teams would have interest in them.
JoeBrady
Abreu has a career BB9 of 5.0, while he had a AAA BB9 of 5.9, a AA BB9 of 4.8 and an A BB9 of 4.4. Gil’s ML (small sample) BB9 is 5.8 and his AAA is 5.9. They could certainly be throw-ins, but that can be said about almost anyone.
Mickey777
You make several good points. Like I said the trade would be built around at least 2 top prospects and the Yankees taking a bad contract in Elvis Andruss. Personally I think Luis Gil is a top prospect, but perhaps that’s my prejudice. I’m afraid I’m old fashioned and rely more on what I see with my own eyes than with minor league stats. Time will tell on Gil. For me he’s more than a throw in. Appreciate your opinion.
stymeedone
Yes, it benefits the Yankees to move multiple players for one by the 40 man cut off, but it does nothing for Oakland. They won’t want the extras until after the cutoff, plus they can get force the other team to provide legit talent back, not non tender candidates.
Beast0830
300 million for Correa. Seager. Lol
Cohens_Wallet
@In Stearns we trust, you should not be talking. The info about your past is public record and online, it is so embarrassing I’m not even going to post it. You have Bigger fish to fry than the Mets stealing your precious POBO.
DBH1969
So in the chat transcript yesterday we were told that very few high end free agents would sign BEFORE the new agreement. Guess the MLB bosses read that and disagree so all of a sudden reporters are reversing course.
Now everyone is lining up to sign before the lockout? lol.
I think I will stick with yesterday’s theory.
SportsFan0000
12 years 320 M for Correa to sign with the Tigers and go play for his former Astros Manager AJ Hinch?!
Cabrera’s contract comes off the books in 2 years. Tigers have little or no long term contracts after 2023…
Brad Scott
The article says “(Corey) Seager is one of the top two names on the market”, the implication being that the other is Carlos Correa. IMHO Freddie Freeman is at the top of the free agent list. And – with no offense intended to the Dodgers’ SS – I don’t think Seager’s in Correa’s class. That makes Freeman and Correa the top two names on the market (at least among position players).
luclusciano
I agree, but I think they are judging top two by $$ and length of term. Seager and Correa are 5+ years younger – but I don’t argue that freeman is up there in the talent view.
BobGibsonFan
It’s always been the belief that the market will wait until the top players are chosen and they set the top salaries. Not sure why this year would be any different.
WhoNoze
It’as impossible to project regression OR progression based on perepherals for rookie SP . It’s difficult enough to do that with verterans.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The Yankees are gonna wind up with both Seager, and Marte . Then they’ll take a few educated fliers on second tier starting pitchers and maybe a bullpen arm, or two (Neris, Givens, Lorenzen et al).
When the dust settles in early October, 2022, they will be sitting atop the AL East with 103 wins.
AlienBob
It is probably to the owners advantage to not sign players until after the lockout. Keep them living in uncertainty for weeks. They are more likely to push to settle. Once the lockout is over their agents will have less time to shop for a better offer.
luclusciano
I would love to see the Yankees sign Rizzo and Story, and flip Torres – cementing DJLM at 2nd. Packaging Torres with top prospects, could net a pitcher and some bullpen help. There are a ton of holes on the Yankees current model, and they need small ball players and defensive minded position players
slider32
Seager being a young powerful lefty hitting SS is perfect for Yankee stadium, If the Yanks land him they will be in good shape moving forward. The next move for Cashman will be to upgrade first base and add another starter. Ideally he trades for Olson or signs Rizzo, this will open up a possible trade of Gleyber Torres, Urshella, Voit, and Sanchez. Cashman will need to put Perazza and pitching prospects to land Olson. Cashman looks to be agressive in finding upgrades at SS, 1B, CF, C, and starting pitching. Yanks look to go over the cap this year, and return under next year, with the main priority in sign Judge next year.
kingbum
No one significant is going to sign now…..players think they are going to win the negotiations and have no real hard cap and get that salary floor…..owners want to shrink the cap and install a hard cap. The owners of big market clubs should be on the players side…..This is when the owners of Pittsburgh, Tampa, Miami, Oakland, and Kansas City can really foul this up
