The Blue Jays locked up one key rotation member for the long haul this week, signing Jose Berrios to a seven-year, $131MM contract extension, but they’re still hoping to retain a pair of key lefties who are now free agents. Both American League Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and fellow southpaw Steven Matz are “priorities” for Toronto, writes FanSided’s Robert Murray.
The Berrios extension shouldn’t be viewed as a deterrent in their efforts to sign another pitcher — far from it. Berrios is slated to earn $10MM next year in the first season of that deal — a slight bit less than he’d likely have earned by going through the arbitration process. And while Berrios adds another notable salary to the long-term ledger, southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu and his $20MM salary will be off the books after the 2023 season. Randal Grichuk is also off the books post-2023, so the 2023 season is really the only one in which the combination of the Berrios extension and a multi-year deal for another arm (e.g. Ray) would substantially impact the payroll.
Whether it’s Ray, Matz or another free-agent target, another rotation addition will fit nicely into the long-term payroll, as Springer and Berrios are now the only two players guaranteed anything in 2024 and beyond. That applies to Kevin Gausman as well, whom MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports to be another target for the Jays. The Jays were linked to Gausman in both the 2019-20 offseason and the 2020-21 offseason, so it’s hardly a surprise to see them in the mix again — although the righty’s price tag is now substantially higher than in either of the past two offseasons. The Jays, Morosi adds, have also spoken with the Marlins about their starting pitching surplus.
One player unlikely to change hands, even if the Jays do go the trade route to add to the rotation, is infielder/outfielder Cavan Biggio. Although the 26-year-old hit just .224/.322/.356 in a 2021 season that was cut in half by neck and back injuries, GM Ross Atkins voiced confidence in Biggio’s ability to rebound during the GM Meetings (link via Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star). Atkins repeatedly talked Biggio up as an option either at second or third base — which spot depends on the rest of their offseason dealings — and as Chisholm notes, it seems unlikely Toronto would trade someone who was viewed as a key long-term piece prior to the 2021 season with his value at an all-time low.
The Jays have a wide-open slate of possibilities thanks to a cost-controlled young core, a relatively clean payroll outlook and a good bit of available financial resources. Ray said following this week’s Cy Young win that his camp is talking with the Toronto front office “on a daily basis” but also “testing the free-agent market” (link via Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi).
Given the accelerated nature of the starting pitching market so far, it’s possible the Jays’ pursuits of Ray and Matz will be resolved, one way or another, before they begin sorting through the infield needs. Regardless of the order in which it plays out, though, it seems likely they’ll come away from the offseason with at least one more starter and an addition to the infield — be it via free agency or trade.
seamaholic 2
I’m not sure a GM “talking up a player” and “voicing confidence in his ability to rebound” is consistent with the conclusion that he is unavailable in trades.
hot droppings
More along the lines that they don’t want to sell low.
SnoopyGum
If I were a GM and I want to increase the trade value of a guy hitting an all-time low, I’d keep saying he’s a valued part of the core moving forward too.
Terminator K
Cavan’s no pig, but this looks more like lipstick application

HE.
WAS.
INJURED.
Terminator K
That’s why I said he’s no pig
SalaryCapMyth
It’s amazing to me how fast commenters here abandon young talent. Don’t have a bad season due to injury. That will be enough to put you on the chopping block and you had certainly better not take longer than one seasons to develop into the elite player you should be or you are out.
iverbure
He’s also like they’re only lefty. He’s not going anywhere.
Terminator K
Cavan’s future is bright. I hope it’s not too many years before we’re reading analyses along the lines of ‘Biggy’s Revenge: Post-Robo-Ump Monster’
Liam D
And what exactly did you see in Biggio pre-injury that made you think he’s a keeper.
JonCor
@liamd – How about a 3-WAR player with defensive versatility and a lefty bat? Is he a franchise player? No. But that’s a damn valuable player.
Liam D
Galvis also had similar WAR that year (remember him) in 2019 which I’m assuming the year you’re referring to. If I’m not mistaken that’s BIggio’s 1st year in the majors. I don’t put too much stock on rookie year since it doesn’t really reflect a players true talent. Case in point Jansen. Maybe pitchers haven’t figured him out yet. All I know is that he (Biggio) failed the eye test the last 2 years. His position in the batting order is similar to Jansen’s which is, a black hole. He’s a sure out at the plate. You say he’ll bounce back, I say he won’t. We’ll see the end of 2022. I’ll be here.
enteluj88
How do you equate a career .354 on-base with being a “sure out”?
smuzqwpdmx
I like Cavan Biggio, but pretending he’s defensively versatile may be hindering his career at this point. Whether you use the eye test or his defensive numbers, he’s not good at 3B, not a real option at SS, quite bad at 1B, and terrible in the outfield. There’s only one position where he’s made a positive rather than a negative contribution to team defense.
Let’s just admit he’s a second baseman and treat him as such. I feel a lot better about moving Espinal all around the field, even though he’s best at 3B.
JonCor
@liam d – His 2019 and 2020 together equal basically a full season, in which he produced 3.7 WAR. He was injured much of last year which could explain his only year where he isn’t an above average offensive performer. I agree that sometimes he looks bad at the plate but even in a very down year he still got on base 32% of the time, which is not great but definitely not a “sure out”. Someone else pointed out below that he isn’t as versatile defensively as the Jays want him to be and that’s a fair point. He’s a decent or average defensive 2B with a bit of pop and strong on base skills, when healthy. That is not a bad #8 or 9 in the lineup, especially this lineup, even if he gets figured out a bit more and ends up being a league average bat.
SoxRewl
I wonder how the development of Groshans and Orelvis Martinez will impact their decision making on who to target for the infield. Depending on how much they spend on starting pitching they might go with a stop gap option at 2nd or 3rd if the budget dries up.
Chipper Jones' illegitimate kid
I think Martinez is playing his way into the OF anyway
bucsfan0004
Couldn’t the Jays sign a free agent to a fat salary in 2022, a modest salary in 2023, then bumped back up again for 2024 and beyond?
Dustyslambchops23
Yes, they took that approach with berrios
bucsfan0004
Actually with Berrios, theyre only paying him $10-11M in 2022, then $20M annually 2023 and beyond. Unless you have info to the contrary. I suggested paying a free agent big in 2022, less in 2023, then more in 2024+ when salary comes off the books
Dustyslambchops23
I read your original comment wrong I thought you were saying backload not front load
thelastonetodie
It’s back loaded, 5 mil signing bonus, 10mil 2022, 17m 2023, 18 2023/24, and then for the opt out years and I think was 28 mil a season for the last 2 years which he has an option out before.
WillDS
You missed one year at 15 mil next season.
5 signing bonus with the 7 years being 10, 15, 17, 18, 18, 24, 24 is the breakdown. Opt out after year 5. Last two years could become 29 and 29 based on some incentives. Seems unlikely as I am guessing if he is good enough to earn the incentives, he will opt out.
TalkSomeSense
Actually the Berrios deal is not 20m annually, in 27/28 he’s getting 25m so the early years are lower. ( See Sportsnet article on the contract )
iverbure
Most free agents avoid deals like that because they know it makes them easier to trade later on.
bluejaysfan
This is the way they should have been structuring the contracts the past two years with such a young core. They have the flexibility earlier rather than later with the young guys. I think the Miami and Cleveland pair nicely with Toronto, both for pitching and infield. Should be an interesting off-season
downsr30
Trading Biggio would be selling very low on a kid that has a lot more upside than what he showed last year. I don’t think he’s ever going to be a big star, as he has a lot of swing and miss in his game, but I think he will be a good player.
Dustyslambchops23
If they plan to use him at 3b then they should trade him.
PutPeteRoseInTheHall
I don’t see Gausman even considering leaving SF. He has been so happy with his time there that it just doesn’t seem like he’s willing to leave. Plus, I see Zaidi seriously pursuing him so I believe he stays
Blue Baron
But money talks and the things you mention walk. He might stay if the Giants make the best offer. Unless, of course, he doesn’t.
Jean Matrac
It’s not that black and white. Sure, if Toronto offers way more money than SF, he probably goes to the Jays. But, players turn down marginally better offers often to go to a team, or a place, that’s more appealing to them. Players will also accept less of an AAV for more years.
Blue Baron
But the Blue Jays are not the only other team involved. He is a free agent, free to choose any of 30 MLB teams that make offers. Just off the top of my head, we know that the Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, Padres, Red Sox, and Yankees are in the market for starters like him. Players and their families can be happy in many places. Unless you personally know the guy and are privy to his thoughts, your statement has little or no basis in fact.
jdgoat
Biggio was a bit of disaster at third last season. I’d rather they bring in a full time third baseman or a full time second baseman and then just let Espinal have a shot everyday at third. Use Biggio in the Zobrist role where he can give almost anybody a day off at any time.
Ducey
He was fine at 2B the year before.
I’d be happy with a placeholder at 3B (even Espinal) with Moreno coming up mid season.
crush619
I’m actually trying to learn when writing the following as I haven’t followed a whole lot of Moreno, but why am I seeing Fans write comments saying they’re fine with him coming up mid season next year while referring to who should play 3rd. My understanding is he’s a Catcher and effective at the position in the minors thus far… shoudl he be focused on that?
TalkSomeSense
Depends on the player ( how athletic) and organizational need. Lot’s of players move around in the minors. Sure catcher is a key position but if the Jays feel one of Jansen/Kirk is their catcher for the next 4-5 yrs and there is a hole at 3rd base now. Thing is with Moreno his bat will play anywhere if he continues like he has been . Remember Delgado? He came up as a catcher .
smuzqwpdmx
Ben Zobrist was at least an average defender at every position. Cavan Biggio has been terrible everywhere except second base. Just because they keep using him as a super-utility doesn’t mean he’s shown any signs of being able to do it properly.
StudWinfield
I’m quite happy if I’m a Jay’s fan. Willing to spend on solid SP’s is always a good thing.
mets7300
Matz will be Going Back To Queens …
C-Daddy
Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario? It’s a relatively short drive from Toronto.
Samuel
@ mets7300;
Perhaps you missed it……
Veteran Mets players that have the option to leave have been. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it comes out that others have asked their agents to request a trade from the team.
The Mets couldn’t even hire a FO baseball ops head that was gainfully employed with a MLB team……not even sure they interviewed one.
terrymesmer
Using Fansided as a source? Do better, MLBTR.
Samuel
With the position players they have on their 40 man roster, at this point the Jays look like they can win the AL East next year. Of course, lots will happen by 2022’s trade deadline.
The issue is their pitching. We’ll see how that works out.
TennVol
Would like to see Biggio at 2B, Espinal as infield utility, and either a FA signed or a trade for a 3b like Matt Chapman or Jose Ramirez. Corey Seager signed as a 3B is a dream, but, not a reality.
HBan22
Maybe they’ll trade for old friend Josh Donaldson.
TalkSomeSense
With Groshans/Martinez and now Moreno as options at 3rd in the not so distant future, tying up long term assets ( prospect trade capital or FA $$ ) does not make a lot of sense for the long view. With their line up all surplus assets should be going to pitching . SP and Pen .
Liam D
Biggio on his own will get you very little. But as part of a package which also includes 1 top prospect (Groshans) and Kirk, that package can fetch a good SP..
HBan22
There have been a few Kirk/etc. for Pablo Lopez rumors lately. I wonder what it would take beyond Kirk to snag him. I don’t think the Jays should give up Groshans unless it’s for a truly elite ace. There is a reason they held onto him but not Austin Martin.
deweybelongsinthehall
Hays have to be careful with longer term deals if they want to keep their core together. Great young nucleus but look at Boston just a couple of years ago. Hopefully for them, everyone reaches their potential. if they do though, they may have to consider trading Bichette if they want to lock up Vlad Jr long term unless they plan now. Obviously, such is contingent on the new CBA, the tax ramifications therein and ownership’s willingness to absorb the associated penalties.
rocky7
If Berios is worth $131 Million long term, then what is Ray the Cy Young winner and Matz worth on contracts going forward….sounds like the Jays are contending for top spending teams going forward, hoping that this wild spending spree brings back WS titles along with the money spent!
deweybelongsinthehall
I don’t see them signing all three despite what is said. Berrios seems like a team friendly deal. Most teams would have provided the Mont Blanc to ink the contract and let him even keep the pen.
Dustyslambchops23
Ray isn’t older and doesn’t have the same track record of consistency as Berrios. Ray will get more per year because he’s a free agent but won’t get 7 years unless a team really goes bananas.
Dustyslambchops23
Ray is older*
TalkSomeSense
I see Ray getting 5/120-125 for an AAV of 24m-25
Spare Tire Dixon
– Re-sign Robbie Ray
– Sign a top reliever (or two)
– Trade for one of Oakland’s SP (Montas, Manaea, or Bassitt)
– Sign Kyle Seager for 3B
No need to get into a bidding war over Bryant or Semien, et al
Shady1771
I like Cavan at 2nd base. Him and Bo worked well together. It was when Montoya started moving him all over the field is when his confidence started to affect his hitting. Cavan went above and beyond to be a Team player and he is to be commended for that but should have had a stronger voice and asked to stay at 2nd base. Bo was never moved around and I honestly don’t believe Cavan should have been either in my humble opinion. I think it’s almost safe to assume Semien won’t be back so the Jays need a strong replacement and I believe Cavan can be that player.
