The Astros announced that third baseman Alex Bregman underwent surgery on his right wrist today, though the procedure isn’t expected to impact his readiness for the 2022 season. The team’s projected timeline sees Bregman as restarting baseball activities in 6-10 weeks, which should mean he’s set for the start of Spring Training camp in February.
Bregman has been battling wrist problems since September, as Astros teammate Carlos Correa revealed to Sports Illustrated’s Stephanie Apstein during the World Series. Bregman downplayed any physical issues but something clearly seemed amiss with his performance at the plate in October. While Bregman had a few big moments during Houston’s playoff run, Bregman hit only .217/.304/.300 with one home run over 69 plate appearances this postseason.
The wrist surgery underscores what has been an injury-plagued year in general for the third baseman. Bregman played in only 91 games after missing over two months rehabbing a left quad strain, and he also spent a week on the COVID-related injury list in April. Though it all, Bregman still provided above-average (113 OPS+, 115 wRC+) offense and hit .270/.355/.422 with 12 home runs over 400 PA, though it was a decided step backwards from his All-Star numbers in 2018-19. Getting Bregman healthy and fully back on track would be a needed boost to an Astros lineup that might lose Correa to free agency this winter.

is his doctor a recycling can?
The Mets "Missed WAR"
I never thought Dansby Swanson getting drafted ahead of Alex Bergman would end up looking good. I have to say that during the World Series it seemed to finally look good though. Bregman is clearly the better player but Swanson was the only one who actually helped his team in this last World Series. Swanson was the better player at the moment it mattered the most. It’s hard to be disappointed with that.
oldoak33
So you’re saying Bregman needs to be hurt to a degree that surgery is needed for Swanson’s draft status to be validated?
sufferforsnakes
I’ll take Swanson over Bregman 7 days a week.
Redwood13
You can have him, no comparison, when was the last time Swanson hit 41 homers in one season?
sufferforsnakes
The game is about more than just home runs. When’s the last time Bregman won a WS without cheating?

@tribe. I agree. Dansby is a great fit for the Braves and he plays his heart out. I fully expect him to be the starting shortstop again in 2022. Im still shocked by NL East division titles and finally anoth World Series Chsmpionship after 26 long years.

Ahh.…. I’m still shocked by 4 straight NL East division titles and finally another World Series Championship after 26 long years.

Rumor is Bregman developed carpal tunnel in his wrist from banging on a trash can. Hope the surgery helps!
jkwdbu
That’s just stupid.
TradeAcuna
Ohhh, that is why he didn’t hit in the WS?!
It has nothing to do with the Braves pitching core….pitching well.
thickiedon
It’s a wrist injury. Nah, wouldn’t affect his performance a bit.
Fever Pitch Guy
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
LaBalaDePlata
He hadn’t looked right since he returned at the end of the regular season. But the Braves pitching staff did an excellent job, for sure.

lol “core”

It was clear Bregman wasn’t right in the WS, and since he was hurt, Aledmys Diaz really should have taken on more innings and at-bats at third base as a result. Since he needed surgery right away, it should have been clear he wasn’t helping the team overall, but not sure if that’s on him or Dusty. Or, yes, I’m sorry – Bregman hurt his wrist banging a trash can. Did I do that right?
Dustyslambchops23
The timing of the surgery is so that he’s ready for next year, not because it was urgent
itsgonnahappen
Playing Diaz and/or not batting him 3rd in the lineup would have helped.
brodie-bruce
the real question is and let’s say bergman was @60% – 70% with the injury is his 60% better than diaz 100%. i know my question is full of “what if’s” but these are the what if’s management have to answer. at that point of the season them questions get even tougher, i believe no one here is questioning that breg is better than diaz but how much better especially hurt or how much confidence dose the team have in diaz those are the real questions.

Sure Bregman was hurt. Butt hurt from incessant booing in 28 parks across this great land

Any chance the Astros simply slide Bregman over to SS and acquire a 3B instead? If not I could see them grabbing Simmons or Taylor.
Strosfn79
After 2 seasons of lower body injuries, I no longer think it’s smart to move Bregman back to short.
Option 1) resign Correa
Option 2) hope Jeremy Pena is ready
Option 3) sign a stop gap veteran
Option 4) move Bregman to short ( if this happens then moving Gurriel to third and putting Taylor Jones at first could be best option)
Taylor Jones is the position player in the system most ready to move into a regular role ( if Pena isn’t) and his best positions are 1b, DH, LF, 3b in order.
kevnames42
I doubt they would hand the starting job over to Pena with no one as a fallback, which is why I think Simmons would be a good fit. I don’t think he’s as bad as he played with the Twins this year. Also goes with the good defense MO that @scrapiron mentioned
Scrap Iron
I don’t think he has the range or arm to be an everyday SS. He could do it for a year as a stop-gap, but I think he would be below average which hurts their MO of strong defense.

Bergman is a great player and watching him during the playoffs you could tell something wasn’t right with him.

Yeah buzzer not working
Strosfn79
Who is this Bergman of which you speak?
The Astros had a backup first baseman named Dave Bergman back in the early 80s.
