The deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players has come and gone. The Tigers’ decision to non-tender Matthew Boyd — more on that here — represents the most prominent name cast into free agency tonight, but here’s a quick rundown of the rest of the non-tenders in the American League.
Note that MLBTR’s Anthony Franco also has a rundown of this year’s National League non-tenders, and MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz published his annual projected arbitration salaries earlier this offseason.
Onto the transactions…
- Outfielder Tim Locastro was non-tendered by the Red Sox, the team announced. The speedy HBP-magnet was claimed off waivers from the Yankees earlier this month after an injury-marred season. He is likely to be an in-demand depth option for teams if his ACL tear recovery goes well.
- The Rangers announced that outfielder Billy McKinney and catchers David Garcia and Yohel Pozo were non-tendered. Texas also assigned outfielder DJ Peters outright to Triple-A Salt Lake after he went unclaimed on waivers.
- The Royals non-tendered lefty Richard Lovelady, per a club announcement. Lovelady underwent Tommy John surgery late in the 2021 season and is expected to be sidelined for the entirety of the 2022 season.
- The Twins non-tendered right-hander Juan Minaya, left-hander Danny Coulombe and right-hander Trevor Megill, per a team announcement. Megill’s non-tender is particularly curious, as he was only just claimed off waivers a few hours ago and was not arbitration-eligible. Presumably, the team will try to quickly re-sign him to a minor league pact and bring him to Spring Training as a depth piece.
- Infielder Phil Gosselin has been non-tendered by the Angels, per an announcement from the team. The journeyman saw a career-high 373 plate appearances in 2021, but is unlikely to challenge that number next year owing to below average offensive and defensive metrics.

Mets should pickup McKinney for OF depth.
JeffreyChungus
They already tried that last year
Grade_1_teacher
McKinney should just try the KBO at this point.
mike156
Someone will surely take a chance on Boyd. You can understand why he was non-tendered, but maybe as a backend starter, and perhaps he can find himself. He’s pitching at his age 31 year, and I doubt he’s even going to figure it out big-time, but worth a shot for decent.

As a Blue Jays fan, I wouldn’t mind getting Boyd back on a one year MLB deal. Figure 1 year at 5 million with incentives ought to get it done. A healthy Boyd can probably give you 10-11 wins out of the number 4 or 5 spot in the rotation if he has a good lineup behind him.
SaintChris
Boyd was released only because he’s injured and isn’t expected to pitch until later in the season or at all this season.
mike156
I should have said that better. Two year contract, modest 2022 salary, more in 2023, and maybe a team option for 2024 at a reasonable price.
5toolMVP
Arte: Hey Perry, forget Stroman and Castillo, sign Boyd to a 1year deal.
That should put us over the top for our starting pitching, right?
Orel Saxhiser
Arte: And while you’re at it, make an offer to Brad Hand. A Boyd and a Hand will lead the Halos to the throne.
Diatribefan
A Boyd and a Hand is worth 2 in the bush league

This is more fun when you read it in a Boston accent.

Remember when his value was so high a few years ago at the trade deadline after a really good 1st half?
nukeg
He’s hurt for a good portion of the 2022 season. The sticking point for the Tigers was the $7.3M. He would make a good buy low FA candidate.
dsett75
As a Tigers fan, trust me, Boyd was pitching like a #2 or 3 starter most of the time. The injury bug got him. He was going to make $7.3 million & won’t be back until the All-Star break, probably. Business decision because AA is wanting another SP. So he needs that money.
BeansforJesus
Oh a fan you say? Then I trust that Boyd was a #2 starter.
wileycoyote56
In Detroit he was the ace
Halo11Fan
Goose was fun to watch, but he wasn’t very good. Very releasable.
i like al conin
I thought his numbers were pretty good for a utility guy. Looks like Wade will be taking his place.
Halo11Fan
You would like a utility guy who is not unplayable at every position. That’s the problem with Rengifo and the like. They are like the Corvaiir. Unsafe to go anywhere.
i like al conin
Halo11Fan, I respect what you’re saying but don’t agree. Look at Goose’s numbers. And even the MLB.com reporter wrote that it was a surprise. He was nowhere close to Rengifo. He had solid part time stats.
Halo11Fan
It wasn’t a surprise to me. The negative WAR is a big number and a utility infielder who is unplayable as a utility infielder is big number.
I’m not the least bit surprised. I wrote after signing Wade that all these players are replaceable and releasable.
Goose just happened to be the only one eligible for arbitration.
carllafong
Maybe, maybe not. Wade may wind up at second and Fletcher at short. They want to resign Gosselin at a lower cost.
Halo11Fan
If the Angels play Fletcher at short and Wade at second then they are the dumbest organization in baseball.
The Angels already have multiple players like Goose. Unplayable at every position. They got rid of two, Wrong and. Goose. The rest likely have options.
carllafong
Are we watching the same team? They released him because he was going to get a big raise in arbitration BECAUSE HE PLAYED WELL. By releasing him he’s a free agent and now they can sign him back at the rate they want to pay– and most likely they will.
Halo11Fan
You do realize Goose had a negative war,,right? His projected salary is 1.5 million dollars
Are you a teenager? If you are, great. As you age you’ll learn more about the game. If you are an adult, read more, learn something, and write less.
i like al conin
Halo11Fan, no need to be rude. This isn’t the Twitter gutter. Carllafong makes a great point. Goose did play well. It appears the Angels wanted a lower cost player as the reason, not because he didn’t produce.
angelsfan4life
Captain Jack says hi. Ward is out of options. I would rather the Angels bring in a SS. I don’t want Taylor. Simmons, burnt that bridge. Galvis wouldn’t be a bad option. Good defensive SS.
i like al conin
And btw, it was only a -0.3 WAR. That’s basically even for any replacement player.
Halo11Fan
If someone asks me if I watch the game, that’s rude. Data backs up my claim.
If someone punches me, I’m punching back.

Goose back to Philly szn.
The Baseball Fan
I have been keeping a tab on how many teams McKinney has been acquired from. It’s getting pretty entertaining
Metsin777
Would like the Mets to get Juan Minaya, pair him up with Diaz again
Metsin777
Nevermind, i swear i thought he was a mariner at one point. Still would like him on the Mets though
The Baseball Fan
Maybe the Sox wanna take another chance at him

McKinney getting those air miles
LordD99
For Yankee fans who are curious, they tendered contracts to all their eligible players. They also agreed to one-year contract terms with German, Luetge and Urshela, avoiding arbitration. I suspect they plan to see what happens on the other side of the lockout before making decisions on Voit, Andujar, etc. Will there even be a Rule 5 draft this year?
phenomenalajs
Not a Yankee fan, but I think there should be a Rule 5 Draft. Assuming the players are minor leaguers who are not on the 40-man, they wouldn’t be covered by the MLBPA. Eventually, the players would have to be placed on the 40-man and active rosters, but I don’t think that would have to happen before the new CBA is signed.
LordD99
Agree on both fronts. The thought occurred to me at the end of the note that maybe they’d simply skip it if the lockout goes on deep into March, but there are likely obligations that will still need to be honored under the old CBA.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Thanks, @99.
Somewhere back in The City, @mlbnyyfan is crushed. I fear for the fate of his Gary Sanchez bobblehead.
LordD99
We’ll say a collective prayer for @mlbnyyfan and his bobblehead.
I was curious what they’d do with Voit, but no way they would just cut him. They don’t yet have a 1st baseman and he remains productive. I suspect they’ll trade him to an NL team searching for a DH/1B type once the universal DH is approved. It looks like a lock. I heard earlier NL teams are engaging with Nelson Cruz. They know the DH will be in the final CBA already.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’ve a feeling that particular bobblehead suffered a rather brutal ending. & not recently either.
I didn’t see Luke as a dfa potential candidate. When he is on the field, he hits. That knee is tending towards a chronic issue. Which, right there, is an argument for PEDs.
Anyway.
For whatever reason, it looks like Cash is just going to sit completely still until we have a new CBA. I have no idea wether that is good or bad. Or neither.
Yankee Clipper
Did you guys see Cashman is in fact contacting TX for IKF?
si.com/mlb/yankees/news/yankees-trade-rumors-new-y…
And, another report said he’s been in contact with the Rays for KK.
LordD99
I have heard and read rumblings about that, but Cashman is so stealthy that he wouldn’t broadcast that to the market. Maybe it’s the Rangers leaking to get more teams interested? I noticed during the season every time the Yankees and Rangers talked it was immediately in the news. Not Cashman’s MO. That suggests the Rangers. As for KK, I just can’t see the Rays and Yankees connecting on a deal, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve talked.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Not until just now. Thanks, Clip.
Kiner-Falefa is not only hard to type, but he has a .670 career OPS (same in ’21). I’m not overly enthused with him in a vacuum or whatever. As a series of additions: maybe!
As for Kiermaier, at this point, he is not much more than a salary dump. His AAV = 11.3 mil, but his actual salary = 14 mil. (Back loaded contract.) BBTV has him with negative (2.8 mil) trade value. & I don’t think the Ray’s would be overly concerned with an intra-divisional trade. They will take the best offer. That’s why they’re the Ray’s.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah. Wouldn’t mind IKF as a new Wade type acquisition, but not primary IFer.
JoeBrady
he is not much more than a salary dump.
===============================
KK is an acquired taste. And, as a RS fan, I hope we acquire him. His career OPS+ is 98, and people treat him like an automatic out. His average season is 14 HRs, a .249 and a 20/7 SB/CS. JBJ had an absolute rifle, and was Spiderman near the wall, but for coast-to-coast ranges, I think KK is as good as it gets.
I’d love to see him land on the RS (at a slightly lower salary), and imho, he’d be awesome for you guys. In fact, I think Cashman missed a golden opportunity yesterday to pick up both KK and Wendle. You need a SS & CF, and more lefty bats. That would’ve been a gift for you guys.
MVPNacho
Remember all the rumored trades for Boyd back in the day. Now, they get nothing for him.

Twins: WTF with Megill?
Orel Saxhiser
We now return to Queens, New York, for another episode of Sandy & Billy.
SANDY: Hey, Billy. Lovelady is available. Are you interested?
BILLY: Absolutely. Just make sure my wife doesn’t find out.

For all the Locastro fans in Boston, SURPRISE!!
This has got to be like Christmas Day at the Bloom house. All those cheap free agents added to the mix!!! WOW!!!! Chaim was a good boy this year!!!!! HO HO HO HO HO!!!!!
wilhar8
Yanks should try to resign Locastro to a minor league contract. He could OF depth and give much needed speed. Only wish he could hit.
Orel Saxhiser
He can’t hit, but is incredibly good at getting hit. A total of 36 HBPs in 503 career plate appearances. Late in games, Boone can send him to the plate to get hit for Gardner
Phil Haverdink
Peters did not go to Salt Lake….probably Round Rock
Foulpole75
I checked Rangers Twitter. It was Round Rock. Common error, mistaking Salt Lake City, Utah, for Round Rock, Texas.

Probably had Dillon peters on the mind

Noooo. Not the goose. He was cheap too that’s surprising.
PutPeteinthehall
Minaya would be a decent middle reliever if he had better control. Walks too many.

The Megill family are a tall group. Jeez. 6-7 and 6-8.

Wel Twins management. You need a #1 and #2 starter yet your sitting on your asses. Mediocrity ugh. Fans deserve better
