The 2021 Gold Glove winners were announced tonight, with plenty of Cardinal Red to be found amidst the gold. The Cardinals became the first team to ever have five players capture Gold Gloves, underlining the tremendous all-around defensive effort that helped St. Louis reach the postseason. Ironically, the only nominated Cardinals player who didn’t win was the most decorated name of the group — nine-time winner Yadier Molina.
The A’s, Royals, Astros, and the World Series champion Braves also had multiple winners, with each club boasting two Gold Glovers. Ten of the 18 winners captured their first Gold Gloves, though some veteran winners continued to shine. The most notable of the multiple-time winners is Nolan Arenado, who becomes the 23rd player to ever win nine or more Gold Gloves in his career. Arenado still has plenty of time to continue his climb up the all-time list, yet catching 16-time winner Brooks Robinson for the all-time third base record may be a tall order even for Arenado.
Here is the full list of winners, as well as the other two nominated finalists at each position….

I’m a little surprised that out of the 4 Braves finalists Dansby Swanson wasn’t one of them. I don’t personally follow the defensive stats that much but I know Snitker was really pushing hard for Swanson to win a Gold Glove. He didn’t even finish in the top 3. Somehow Andrelton Simmons finishes 2nd in the AL though? Wasn’t he pretty bad this year? Also, for Swanson to not even be nominated but Albies and Freeman to both finish top 2 while Duvall and Fried actually win it seems a little weird. Fried earned it but I never thought Adam Duvall would win a Gold Glove ahead of Swanson. Funny side note: The San Francisco Giants traded power hitting Gold Glove winner Adam Duvall to the Reds years ago. The reason? They said he would never be able to play solid defense. I hope he takes a picture of himself with that Gold Glove trophy and sends it to them. Along with a picture of his 2021 World Series Championship ring. Nothing against the Giants but any time you get traded from a team because they doubt your defense and you end up winning a Gold Glove it has to feel pretty good to throw it back in their face.
There’s many defensive metrics, but look at OAA (Outs Above Average) for example, and top-3 in MLB at all positions are all SS (Nicky Lopez, Francisco Lindor, Nick Ahmed) – with Andrelton Simmons placing #6 despite missing 31 games. No, Simba hasn’t lost a step. In fact, he had a better fielding PCT since 2018, fwiw. He may not be as good offensively as he was in LAA, but make no mistake, he’s a hired glove-assassin. And if you look at OAA again, Swanson only had 3 (while even Heredia had 6; Freeman had 4).
What does swanson finishing 3rd have to do with simmons finishing 2nd?
@Mets, it was six years ago that the Giants traded Duvall away, so it’s not too fresh of a wound. That said, I watched Duvall this entire postseason with a little bit of envy. Now that he turned down his player option, maybe the Giants should pick him up again. However, I bet he gets a 2 year offer from Atlanta and coming off of that WS win, he’ll take it.
@giantsphan12: Duvall turned down his mutual option but he isn’t a free agent. He still have one year of arbitration left so if the Braves tender him he has to stay. He doesn’t have a choice other than retiring. MLBTR estimates that Duvall will make $9.1M in arbitration next season if the Braves tender him. I imagine they will. It’s only 1 year though and he becomes a free agent after next season. The Braves could still QO him before the 2023 season and I could see him accepting that. I doubt the Braves offer Duvall a multi-year deal right now because it’s unnecessary. They still control him through next season and it’s possible they still hold control the season after that just by going year to year.
@the Mets “missed War” The Giants traded Duvall because he can’t hit, not because of his defense. He actually came up as a third baseman with the Giants. His power doesn’t make up for the fact that he strikes out 160+ times a season. SF has large park.
How did Gallo win a gold glove?!?! Just look at that batting average!!!!
Same way he won it last year.
I agree his BA was awful, but it’s an award for his defense not his offense.
It’s all about defense not batting
Explain Bader over JBJ then…
That’s easy…Bader was a better CF than JBJ
Chipper, me thinks you got ‘em.
Did you really just ask that? How did Joey Gallo win a gold glove with such a low batting average? I swear half the posters on this site don’t even watch baseball lmao
It was sarcasm. Players use to win gold gloves based on hitting. The better they hit the more likely they were to get votes.
But you’d have to be watching baseball for decades to know that.
Chipper….. fielding not hitting…..make sense????
Yay for Keuchel!
Enhances his trade value.
not to be that guy, but is it proper to say “Guardians” when referring to last year? I personally have no issue with the name change, but that’s not what the team’s name was when said players were on the field vying for said awards.
I’m going with Cleveland Flamers… Because of fastballs
How bout Cleveland steamers?
I am making a Cleveland Steamer as I am reading your comment about Cleveland Steamers.
Cleveland Warriors…As in “Social Justice”.
Just be thankful they didn’t name the team the Cleveland Harriet Tubmans
and I mean you don’t even need to call them “Indians” you can just say Cleveland.
Or the CBT, the Cleveland Baseball Team. I mean it works for the team that plays football in the nation’s capital. Or the Cleveland pushovers or several others. Seriously, for the 2021 season stats, awards, etc they should be referred as Cleveland Indians. Going forward the new name (Guardians) should be used.
Typically when a name changes you use the new name when referring to the past. When talking about Giancarlo Stanton’s rookie year you don’t change it to Mike Stanton, why would a team name be any different?
that’s never how it’s worked with sports teams
If that’s never how it worked, then why are you asking?
Dark Side is right. We refer to the Marlins as the Florida Marlins if we are talking about 2003. We can’t change names retroactively.
because said concept isnt being properly applied in this article.
Darkside: You’re correct. In fact, even the Yankees don’t recognize the years of the NY Highlanders (the previous team name) in history, record, or otherwise. People don’t necessarily understand the distinction because they’re inadvertently misapplying what would otherwise be correct in reference.
lemon – That’s completely not true.
Does anyone ever say Pedro Martinez, Vlad Guerrero, Gary Carter or Andrew Dawson all played for the Nationals?
Trying to wipe out all signs of the past is a slippery slope, and one we should avoid.
“ Trying to wipe out all signs of the past is a slippery slope, and one we should avoid.”
As long as you know that literally no one is doing that, then I agree.
The removal of books and statues the US says otherwise. Pretending that the bad parts of history doesn’t exist doesn’t change the past.
Leaving aside the “statues are idolatry, the opposite of history” argument and my curiosity at what books you’re referring to being removed from where, I will clarify that I meant “literally no one in this comment thread/section is ‘trying to wipe out all signs of the past.’
OntariGro: Why do you persist in always bringing the baseball conversation to social justice issues? You’re capable of talking baseball. Stop continually espousing your extreme views on here.
You’re offended at something that has literally nothing to do with you.
Here’s a question: Why doesn’t anyone consult Native Americans when determining what’s good for us? Why doesn’t anyone ask us? Because it’s a party platform agenda, that’s why.
If you notice, Native Americans overwhelmingly were in favor of keeping the name, or at least, did not prefer it go away. And, frankly, even if we overwhelmingly thought it was too offensive – it’s really too bad. That’s the benefit of living in a free country. Stop talking for us, please.
The team in Washington was never the Expos, and the team in Montreal was never the Nationals.
But in Tampa Bay, I think it’s perfectly fine to discuss the Rays prior to 2008.
lemonlyman: I know it’s a different sport but this is EXACTLY why your comment doesn’t hold water. Johnny Unitas NEVER played for the Baltimore Ravens or the Indianapolis Colts. He played for the BALTIMORE COLTS.
Lemon, you are completely wrong. See Boston Americans vs Boston Red Sox or Brooklyn Robins vs. Brooklyn Dodgers just to name a few. When addressing past seasons, you refer to the team by the nickname they went by in that season.
All four post secondary institutions that I have attended used to be called College but are now called University. So I refer to them as University even though they were College when I was there. Why not?
It’s basically an improvement to be called the Guardians so why not use it all the time.
Improvement?⚾️
You went to high school four times?
Only certain foreign countries use the term “college” that way. Here in the U.S., “college” refers to any post-secondary education (after high school), while a “university” is specifically only used for colleges that offer at least Bachelor’s Degrees. When used in the name itself (with rare exceptions like Boston College), “College” refers specifically to 2-year schools.
Dartmouth college is a renowned Ivy League school offering many degrees and most students enter with a 4.0 GPA.
Daniel Webster, dr Seuss, Thaddeus Stevens, Nelson Rockefeller, Meryl Streep and Robert Frost are a few of its more famous graduates.
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of colleges in the US that offer four year degrees, and some also offer graduate degrees.
Generally, though not universally, the distinction in the US between a college and a university is that the latter is an umbrella organization that encompasses several colleges and institutes and graduate programs. So, in one university there may be the college of life sciences, the college of arts and letters, the college of medicine, the college of law, all offering post-secondary and graduate education, as well as institutes for research and graduate studies.
Universities also usually give equal or greater precedence to a research mission, whereas colleges often prioritize undergraduate education. But again, this is not universally true.
The simple truth is that there’s no fixed criteria for an educational institution to use one of the other. There are secondary schools in the US that use the term college. There are fraudulent businesses and hucksters certificate programs that call themselves universities. Here are colleges that put a premium on research, and universities that consist of one unified undergraduate program.
That’s an eclectic group.I knew about Webster but not Stevens nor Rockefeller.
zee – You have every right to dislike the Indians name. But you can’t change the past no matter how hard you try.
Joe Charboneau never played for the Guardians.
Miguel Dilone never played for the Guardians.
Mike Hargrove never played for the Guardians.
If they never wore the Guardians uniform, you can’t say they played for the Guardians.
Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull never played for the Hurricanes. Etc etc.
You attended four different “institutions”? Were they state or federal?
It’s an improvement to be called “Guardians” instead of Indians? LOL
Because it’s inaccurate. Most people would indeed not call them universities when referring to a time before they became such.
Lol
I’ve noticed you like to laugh mister. Out loud.
i dont know why you do this. Ive made my point very clear on this in the past and i don’t see the failure in my logic here.
SJWs don’t use logic. They use emotion.
Should be referred to as Indians. The Gold Gloves are for the 2021 season—there was no “Guardian” baseball team. However, I would refer to free agents from the “Guardians”, as this is now the offseason where the name change has officially taken place. Just my two cents on the matter.
Who cares
I Like to call them Cleveland cowards, folding on cancel culture and changing the name which stood there for decades, out of the “need” on not offending some people. Thank God my beloved Braves stood their ground.
@darkside. Your right bro end of story
@rayforever. Legendary comment. So true.
It’s not like it was ever specifically a derogatory term in the first place. An inaccurate, confusing historical mistake, yes, but it was only ever derogatory if used in context that way by the speaker.
Lol. It’s a shame you don’t understand the distinction between being labelled Indian vs Brave.
Stroman didn’t get it? Thanks clowns
That you Matthew Brownstain.
Voters were pretty pro cardinal I guess….we’re they all from StL?
Were any of the 5 undeserving? Arguments can be made for some but ultimately there weren’t any glaring snubs.
Goldy over Freddie is a shame.
Freeman: +4 OAA +2 DRS
Goldschmidt: +6 OAA +10 DRS
I never trust defensive metrics for first base. Receiving a ball is important. I just don’t see how metrics work at first base. Every year I see too many anomalies.
The guy who took over for Arenado on the Rockies was actually the best defender in baseball at any position (by defensive metrics), but Ryan McMahon played a lot of 2nd base so I guess got dinged for that. But he probably had a better defensive year at third than Arenado.
Agree 100%.
You also have to take into account that when a player becomes a perennial winner of gold gloves it’s usually more difficult to “take the crown” from them, and typically only happens following a pronounced drop in defensive ability and/or injury.
Or a drop in offensive production.
How about Duvall over Betts?
Edman is the only possible stretch in that group and that would not be a long stretch , just look a Defensive runs saved and you can see how good the defense was in STL.
5 gold gloves lol that’s 5/9ths of the team. If you would have told me that I’d ask did they win the world series? Nope, lost to the 106 win Dodgers in a wild card game. What?!
You have to score runs to WIN @Hippy.
I’m surprised Rafael Palmeiro didn’t pick up a gg at 1B. Maybe next year.
This is BS. David Fletcher is the absolute best second baseman in the American League. It’s not even close. The selection committee has embarrassed themselves.
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE!!! FRANKLY HE DID WIN THIS AWARD AND IT WASN’T EVEN CLOSE!!!
I didn’t know the MyPillow guy read MLBTR.
Bad joke + bad politics + get ratioed scrub
Why are you shouting?
Why don’t you have a good relationship with your father?
because he’s dead.
Came on here to comment on just that. No clue how Fletcher doesn’t win the award.
I was hoping Fletcher would win too.
There is no committee. “Voting is conducted by major league managers and up to six coaches from each team, and they cannot vote for players on their teams.”
DRS Fletcher has Semien by 1
UZR Semien led the league, housing Fletcher’s -0.4
Semien led the league in Total Zone Runs
Semien Led 2B and was 9th overall in DEF (Defensive Runs Above Average)
Fletcher’s Fielding % is better so there’s that, I guess
Outs Above Average
Fletch- 95th pctile
Whit- 92nd pctile
Semien- 88th pctile
dWAR
Fletch- 2.0
Semien- 1.8
Whit- 1.6
Range Factor/Game at 2B
Whit- 4.66
Fletch- 4.33
Semien- 3.75
These stats, combined with Fletcher’s vast advantage in the Cuteness Index™ should have made him the unanimous Gold Glove winner, now and forever
Offensive stats always weigh in to Gold gloves, that’s why no one does or should take them seriously as a measure for defensive ability.
Semien won for the same reason so many win, they overall were the better player.
Overall the better player on both offense and defense.
If offense is always a weighed factor, how did Sean Murphy win?
Fletcher’s defensive metrics are not impressive. He doesn’t have a good arm and releases everything in such a way the ball has to travel further. Outs above average is a stat I trust and it says Fletcher is top notch. So who knows?
Give me Bobby Grich, who never won a gold glove for the Angels.
Fletcher has one of the quickest releases I have ever seen. And he is among the most accurate, as well.
He has a very quick release and misses his target more often than he should. He’s flashy and hard to evaluate.
So, in my opinion, there are intangibles that are not always captured by cyber metrics. Fletcher has incredible baseball instincts, and is never out of position. That is saying something in this era given the odd shifts and positioning modern infields go through. Dude’s a human highlight reel.
Lindor was +20 in outs above average should have won the gold glove imo.
One last lolmet to end the year
Andrew “Golden Glove” Bennyteddy. I like the sound of that
Franchy Cordero got robbed.
Guardians lol I can’t wait until PETA starts getting offended and we lose all team names regarding animals. One day there will be the St. Louis tables and the New York lamps just so no one gets their wittle feewings hurt
Ikea will get plenty pissed, it’s not a lamp, it’s an “uloga!”
New York Lamps, replacing the well known animal mascot the…Met…
He was talking about the other New York team obviously. Yankees are a bunch of damn animals.
Also congratulations, for being the millionth person to pass off this observation as if it’s insightful/controversial/not worthless in its false equivalency/callousness….you win a commemorative coffee mug.
Watch out, soon we’ll be marrying trees!
Then you can’t even call ‘em the Tampa Bay Trees ‘cause now the married trees are offended!
The National Furniture Institute on line 3.
Not everyone can afford tables or lamps. It’s privileged ⚾️
I like lamp.
And by the way, before people complain about the Cleveland baseball team or Washington football team, a certain franchise name in Tampa Bay got cancelled first, just nobody cares because it’s a team name and it’s stupid anyway.
Wait until all people who masturbate get offended by the Yankees. Guess we will have to change their name too.
timyanksit, and i’m not tim
FYI….tables are made of wood. The forests are cleared to make those “non offensive “ tables.
Lamps use electricity. Most of the power in the US comes from coal power plants. Lamps contribute to global warming, which is offensive.
See where this leads when it starts?
St. Louis just has to argue that the team was originally named after the “lovely shade of cardinal” on their socks and charge their logo to something fitting that’s also not too similar to Boston’s.
I guess Keuchel could back up third better than his competitors. Practice makes perfect.
Zing!
You guys are putting way too much stock into the GG. The voting is done by managers and coaches and there is plenty of room for bias and a popularity contest.
This is so true. That said, Olsen >>>>> Gurriel defensively.
Nonetheless, great job, Joey Gallo!!!
@ YankeesBleacherCreature;
Great point!
Why put faith in managers and coaches that understand the profession and see the games, when one can look at bogus statistics that are determined in ways that I still can’t figure out.
Because humans are bias and can’t possibly process the amount of data that would be necessary to make a decision beyond a popularity contest
Fine……
Tell me what “data” is being processed?
When a SS moves to the right of 2nd base on a shift for a LH hitter, how is he being accessed? As a 3B? 2B? How much ground is computed? With 2 strikes on the batter many teams flip-flop the 3B and SS. How is that being computed? When an OF has a superior or inferior OF playing next to him, he has to cover more or less ground. How is that being computed? How about when a SS moves to his left or right before a pitch to try to deak the hitter into thinking the pitch would be something he could pull or not? Jeter was a master as messing with batters heads. How about infielders making up for teammates that can’t play D – a 3B, SS, 2B that had to double clutch a throw because the 1B was not at ready for the throw? 1B’s that have to dig out bad throws from poor infield teammates. OF’s that don’t hit cutoff men. Cutoff men that can’t make the proper relay throw…..and on and on.
Go back to playing baseball on a computer. The awards are for what a player did on he field.
Outs above average by stat cast breaks down where a fielder is playing, the velocity of the ball hit, how fast the batter is, and how fast a fielder gets it to first base. They log every play.
This is the 21st century, these people have a much better idea than a manager who only sees a handful of games a defender plays.
Lol what are you even talking about
How is a coach or manager supposed to watch every defensive play for all of the nominees. It’s unreasonable.
You’re arguing to hear yourself talk. Just stop, go back to yelling at clouds
{raises fist and yells} DAMN YOU CLOUDS!!
Hahahaha!
Congrats to former Nat, Michael A. Taylor on his Gold Glove with the Royals! Very happy for him.
Really, Austin Riley got nothing? Oh well I gues a NL Championship Ring AND World Series Ring will have to do! SMH. Go Braves 2021 Champs!!!
Ohhh and NOTHING for Dansby? Glad we are Braves Country and not Mainstream. That dude made sooooooo many sick plays this year. Again, SMH.
Yeah, those stupid numbers. I hate it when facts ruin a good argument.
Look at OAA (Outs Above Average) — he didn’t. He had 3. Freeman had 4. Heredia had 6 (lol). Maybe Swanson makes plays look more difficult than they are for effect. Smoke n’ mirrors? Compare him to Simba who had 16 OAA in 29 less games played than Swanson.
OOA is supposed to be the most comprehensive IF metric available because of what it measures. Ironically, DRS charts, DEF rating, and OOA ratings all conflict with certain players. When you get a player that is near top or bottom on all three, you know that’s probably an accurate assessment of his ability.
Congrats Yuli!! AL Batting Champion & Gold Glove Award.
Maybe a better question would be, when referring to the past, do you refer to Tampa as the Devil Ray’s? And the answer to that is yes.
that’s my point. personally, if they dont like the name, the just “Cleveland” is fine because it’s a correct way to have referred to the team during the season in which the awards were for.
Happy for Jacob Stallings.
Was impressed with the way he handled the young Pirate pitchers as well as with his defensive abilities. The man is a gamer and among the most underrated players in MLB.
Not to mention he deserved it last year but did not win.
Samuel- I second that emotion regarding Stallings. And to think the Pirates got him through waivers in 2019.
Absolute BS that Martin Maldonado lost out to Sean Murphy. That is Maldonado’s Gold Glove, just because we’re all still mad at the Astros doesn’t mean that we should punish guys who are playing hard today.
Maldonado: -2 DRS, +1.3 FRM
Murphy: +10 DRS, +9.7 FRM.
Yes the Astros won at first and short because everyone is made at them.
One guy that I was surprised not to see as a candidate is Zunino.
I’m a huge fan of Lourdes but LOL to his nomination. He did improve this year but still funny
Last year Clint Frasier was a nominee. I’m a Yankees fan but come on. Clint Frasier?
You guys can have the Gold Gloves. I’ll take my World Series trophy.
I’dve taken you for a Vancouver Vultures or Delaware Clams fan myself, but fair enough.
Vancouver’s team will be called either the Sharks or Whales. Take your pick.
Wow that’s so cool. What position do you play for the Braves?
Bobby Cox, is that you?
Anyone else remember that time Rafael Palmeiro won a gold glove for DHing most of the season? Or Jeter winning a bajillion gold gloves despite being merely competent defensively? Why people take this remotely seriously is beyond me.
Jeter was clearly one of the best defensive SS of all time.
And Paul O’Neill is MLB’s all-time leader in bGRIT.
Says the obviously unbiased Yankees fan.
If you are referring to the Jeter fan I have to assume he was joking. Well … Probably not. Lol
Yes, it should’ve been clear sarcasm, but I guess that’s not even clear these days…….
I am prone to make that same mistake. What is clear in our minds may not be so clear in someone else’s.
I do have a question though as I basically know about the Pirates and the Phillies.Wasn’t Jeter considered a fairly good shortstop who had good hands and was consistent but just did not have the extensive range that the best fielding ones had?
Lol. Yeah it should have been
I think that’s a fair assessment. And in over 50 years of watching ball his world series “flip” from foul territory on the first base side was one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen. Just brilliant.
Thank you Darryl. And I remember that play as brilliant and that the runner was the “other brother” Giambi but I think that it was against the A’s in the championship series.
I’m sure you are correct. I took some liberties when I said WS. I was going from memory which is never a good thing.
Just details.I recently was thinking of that play, and wondered when it happened, but I do remember Giambi and the green on the uniform.
I am continually amazed at how the brain works to remember what we do remember.
Thanks Darryl.
Speaking of memory a story from my childhood. I’m a big Montreal Canadiens fan (don’t hate me). I vividly remember one game where Bobby Rousseau scored five goals. But what I remember about that night is my dad was painting their bedroom with oil paint so the box spring and mattress were in the living room. We were laying on the bed watching the game. Back then the only games were on Saturday night. And I remember our mom giving the boys wet face clothes because our eyes were Burning from the oil paint. Recently I googled the date he scored 5 goals and I was 37 months old. That didn’t seem possible so I checked the day of the week and the game was played on a Saturday.
What did I have for breakfast today I’m not quite sure but I remember a five goal night when I had just turned 3.
You were born in December 1960.
You are still a young man!
I remember things from that age also, but not sports events.
They have made it more based around the numbers. Last year coaches didn’t vote it was all some statcast defined stat
Crawford with his 4th Glove…hopefully he get his 2nd Silver Slugger
JP Crawford just gets disrespected.
Only 1 SS named Crawford can win the award. Just gets too confusing. JP’s really formed into a great foundational piece that PHI sure good use. Good on Trader Jerry.
David Fletcher should have won for 2b over Semien. Fletcher. Semien just the bigger name. That was all.
A bigger name that was better than Fletcher defensively this season.
Freddie and Ozzie got robbed. I definitely DON’T think Dansby deserved any recognition as some fans are saying on here. There are at least a handful or better SS defensively than Dansby, but he has improved.
You could’ve made an argument for Goldy getting the award based off some advanced stats, but honestly I think Goldy got the award as a reward for the overall season he had. I’ve watched both throughout their careers, and from my point of view Freddie is just the better overall defender. Freeman has a better arm than Goldy, using it to turn double plays, and throw guys out at home. Freeman has more range, and he uses that range to get to grounders and pop flies that Goldy isn’t capable of reaching. However, I will say while Freeman does have the better stretches helping his guys complete close plays, Goldy is more consistent at digging balls out of the dirt helping get outs from off-target throws at first.
Anyways, speaking of improved, Austin Riley might get a mention next season if he continues to work with Ron Washington and continues improving defensively. He made a heck of alot of great plays and played well defensively night in and night out.
Oh please, stop with the Braves whining. Please!
Will the hate towards Machado ever end?
No. That ass deserves every bit of it.
Altuve was robbed.
No, Altuve is a robber.
Where is uncle Gio? Shocked no Urshela
Chapman and Arenado are beyond outstanding third basemen. Gio Urshela is good defensively but isn’t close to being in their league. It just isn’t close. And I’m a yankee fan.
Guess Kevin Newman had to “hit” better to get a Gold Glove.
Glad to see the Cardinals bring home the awards. I’d rather had seen them win a ring, but Gold Gloves will have to do for 2021.
Bit of a popularity contest… it’s like, use metrics to get finalist, then throw those out the windows for the final selection lol
Bravesfan-The Gold Glove has been a popularity contest long before the new system was in place. The new system simply puts a limit of choices on the voters. Though Brooks Robinson deserved most of his GG, there were a few years in between where others should have won it, but his reputation won out. The guy was the best in his era, but in my opinion, not always gold. The voters don’t always get it right. Remember in 1958, Norm Siebern won one. WHAT? It is what it is, so we just have to live with it. I complain here and there as others do. It keeps up interest in the off season.
A lot of good defense in Missouri. St Louis with 6 above average defenders. Royals have 5 with Nicky Lopez in the group. Royals have 2 good defenders in Witt and Pratto coming up. It’s possible both teams could have at least 4 winners next year.
Actually, the Cardinals were above average at every position (except possibly pitcher). Both DeJong and Sosa were well above average at SS, while Carlson was above average in RF and only became below average when filling in at CF while Bader was hurt.
Look at Benny winning a gold glove. He was inconsistent here in Boston, but one of my favorite players to watch. Good for you Benintendi.
Stallings deserves to be up there, he has been really solid+ his career on defense and last year was one of the +
Newman, didn’t realize how good he was on defense until i saw his nomination, in my brain i went oh okay yeah didn’t see much in the way of issues then looked at his advanced stats and mind blown.
Reynolds IMO only got there because his offense and some crazy plays he made. Generally pretty solid if it is near him, but his range isn’t like Bradly for example.
I am kinda surprised Adam Frazier didn’t get another nomination
The Cards have a great defense. We need pitching.
If Molina believed last year’s voting was racist when it was done without the human element, can’t imagine what his whiny excuse will be for this year.
I’ve never heard that from him but if anyone wins 8 gold gloves and then loses and complains about racism in the voting they are an idiot and disrespectful of the other fine defensive players they compete against.
Molina was mad that he was not even a finalist in 2020 and he suggested that the league did not want him to tie Bench for 2nd on the all time catcher list for gold gloves.
From NBC Chicago last year:
Molina, 38, trails Reds Hall of Famer Johnny Bench for second-most Gold Gloves by a catcher all-time, with Hall of Famer Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez first with 13. He suggested the league doesn’t want him to tie Bench’s total, but the fact is the award is based entirely on SABR’s Defensive Index this year (more here)
Well in hindsight that’s a really good point he was making because EVERYONE is always concerned about who is number 2 in the record books.
Who cares that joe DiMaggio hit in 61 consecutive games when we all know that … Someone … Else … Is second.
US whities only care about
SGOAT
56. Where the hell did I get 61?
I forgot all about that, had to look it up again and remembered that Pudge has the record.. which seems to blow Yadier’s statement out of the water.
Certainly would like to see Yadier get another one. One of the better defensive catchers in my time. But his performance just hasn’t been there.
Apparently racism is a new thing and didn’t exist in the 1960s.. The very Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente won 12.
The Cardinals Gold Gloves winners were Fantastic!!!!
I’m especially glad to see both Harrison Bader and Tommy Edmon’s names as winners!!
Tommy Edmon is the most underrated player on the St. Louis Cardinals team!!! Especially by his own Cardinals Front Office!!!
Tommy is a pure contact hitter who doesn’t strike out that much. The Cardinals Front Office and hitting coach Jeff Alberts wants him to join the Launch Angle metrics club.
Leave Tommy’s swing alone!!!! His contact hitting style makes things happen!!! Especially from the leadoff position!!!!!
Maybe you should have capitalized entire words so we’d have known you were emphatic.
George Kissell would be proud today to learn of all this golden hardware for our Cardinals. Coaching extraordinare.
Congratulations Brandon Crawford- well deserved!
How does Matt Olson keep getting beat at 1B?
