After a disappointing season with high expectations, the Padres are planning to part ways with manager Jayce Tingler after two seasons at the helm, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The decision has not been confirmed by the club, who calls the news of Tingler’s fire “premature,” tweets AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Still, expectations are that Tingler will be let go.
The Padres shocking collapse this year has been well-documented, and it appears that Tingler will be left holding the bag. Despite the frustrating season, Tingler will finish his tenure in San Diego with a winning record, sitting currently at 115-105, a .523 winning percentage.
The Padres were the “it” team of 2020, Tingler’s first season as manager. A relative unknown at the time of his hire, Tingler nonetheless led the Padres to the playoffs for the first time since 2006 and finished second in manager of the year voting. Though they were swept by the eventual champion Dodgers, it was a competitive and spirited three-game series, setting the stage for a tight divisional race in 2021.
The future looked bright for Tingler, who was hand-picked to manage the club by A.J. Preller, who himself was promoted to president of baseball operations and extended through 2026 in February. Preller’s promotion came amid a busy winter, after which the Friars were all but assumed to push the Dodgers for the NL West crown. The Padres extended Fernando Tatis Jr., locking in their star shortstop as the future of the franchise, and they overhauled their rotation with trades for Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, and Joe Musgrove, among other moves.
The 2021 season began on script with the Padres having a share of the best record in MLB as late as 54 games into the year, as MLB.com’s Sarah Langs recently tweeted out. They were 34-20 at that point in the season on May 30th. The injuries began to pile up, and from that point on, the rollicking-good-fun Padres have been nothing short of a disaster. They’ve gone 44-62 since, guaranteeing a losing campaign yesterday with their 82nd loss. The loss came at the hands of the Giants, who took the Padres’ Cinderella season right out from under them and wore it for themselves.
The Padres on-field failures are wide-ranging, though injuries no doubt played a role. The inflexibility of a roster weighed down with hefty contracts for under-performing veterans also played a part. It certainly seems a touch hypocritical for Preller to send Tingler packing, and yet it would hardly be a surprising development. There have been quite a few front office people let go, in fact, as repercussions of the difficult season have been felt throughout the organization. Recent weeks, as well, have been marred by rising tensions and in-dugout altercations that drew national attention, perhaps even providing cause for a Tingler dismissal.
Development failures have also been central to the Padres narrative. With that in mind, the futures of MacKenzie Gore, Adrian Morejon, and Ryan Weathers will be of particular interest for anyone in a leadership role moving forward. It wasn’t long ago that these young arms were the crown jewels of a deep farm system, but trades have depleted the system’s depth while their young hurlers have yet to establish themselves as difference-makers at the Major League level.
The spotlight will shine ever brighter on Preller in the days and weeks to come. Given his recent extension, it seems he’ll continue as the primary driver within the organization, though his next managerial hire will likely be his last unless the team can get itself back on track.
dshires4
Long overdue.
iverbure
He was always in tough when the gm tried to hotshot is way to the playoffs and decimated the organizations depth. The game is won with 40 men not 25 anymore.
I always get a chuckle when people here list a teams batting order and say wow look at how great this lineup is. In reality that lineup might be the lineup like 6 times at most. Go look up how many different lineups the rays have used this year.
truthlemonade
Iverbue: Sure, the lineup changes, but I think people are more likely to think, “The SD ROSTER is so talented,” not any day’s lineup.
Fever Pitch Guy
Yes, a talented roster can make even the worst of managers look good for a year or two.
This is just another example of how the MOY award is such a farce. A manager shouldn’t be judged on just wins, they should be judged on how much more they can get out of their team than what was reasonably expected.
Plenty of managers have had first-year success, but maintaining that success over several years is what sets the good managers apart from the others.
dugmet
and how exactly do you measure that? First, you have to start with appropriate expectations, second you can only evaluate what is directly under a manager’s control while filtering out luck – good or bad.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The manager is the least of the Padres problems. First order of biz is to get the SP healthy. It’s a damn nice rotation when all are hale and hearty, and it’s backed up by one of the best bullpens in MLB.
I like three-fourths of the infield with Hosmer the lone exception. But, let’s face it, his contract makes him untradeable. The outfield? Wouldn’t mind seeing it totally revamped. If it goes unchanged, the best mark I could give it would be C or C+.
No matter what they do this off-season, competing with the Dodgers and Giants in the NL West will remain a tough row to hoe.
dodgers32
Absolutely agree with the comments above. When will Preller be held accountable? He’s taken a similar “go for it all” tack at least twice before with the same disastrous effects, stripping the talent pipeline. If he sweeps out Tingler, he should be next to wear the noose!!
paddyo furnichuh
Tingled is Preller’s scapegoat. Preller has made some great trades while also hindering their payroll options with the Myer and Hosmer deals. Paying top dollar for corner spots is imprudent, unless they are top tier offensive performers eg: Martinez,Turner, Goldschmidt, Arenado, or Ozuna (good deal until his off-field behavior)
It seems Preller focuses on the big name deals and not enough on the depth moves. The Padres were hit-like many teams- with a plethora of injuries. This was foreseen by many across sports when going from a short season to a regular season. The rise in soft tissue injuries was not an unforeseen circumstance when going from a 60 game season to a full schedule of games. Shrewd GMs/PoBOs built depth in planning for this reality.
Preller did not; he lost out on Mad Max but one would’ve thought he had some lower tier SP trade deals as contingency plans. The Scherzer deal went down in the final minutes-but he easily could have upped their offer with their deep farm.
It’s all easy to say this in hindsight; but the main point remains. Tingled is Preller’s scaepegoat so AJ can keep his job a little longer.
paddyo furnichuh
Tingler*…..though I like my autocorrect typo.
paddyo furnichuh
Maybe the Padres win again today because of news their skipper is out-to show loyalty to him and put in their best effort.
dshires4
Did I once mention lineup construction? He should have been fired the moment he forced Tatis to apologize for hitting a grand slam. He doesn’t have his players back and it shows him to be spineless. The Padres are better with somebody else leading that team.
bucsfan0004
Couldn’t agree more. No player in pre-arb/arb (which he was at the time) should be forced to apologize for hitting a home run.
GETBUCKETS
I agree that a teams “ideal lineup” won’t be the actual lineup everyday because of injuries, slumps, days off, etc. Point taken.
But, don’t compare with the Rays. They made their team to be diverse. Their lineup changes so much, because that’s how they put the team together. Compare with any team but them.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The Giants do pretty much the same thing with their line up. Kapler mixes and matches every game. This year, he pulled all the right rabbits out of the hat. I don’t think he’ll be quite as fortunate next year. Though they still should be very good.
Fever Pitch Guy
Historically teams perform better than expected with first year managers.
Like with the Red Sox, they won the WS in Tito’s first year and Farrell’s first year and Cora’s first year. But only Tito had success again after their first season.
paddyo furnichuh
@Lou…. I think one aspect that is sometimes left out of mixing and matching and going with the best lineup based on statistical analysis is the skill set required as a manager to keep a team content and “buying in” to the concept.
Kepler has done very well this year like Roberts and Cash have been doing it for a few years. It’s maybe a tired mantra as maybe sports can lag a bit in modern thinking on successful leadership/management skills.
Communicate with your people, treat them with respect, and be open about their daily and long-term roles as part of a winning team/culture.
paddyo furnichuh
@Fever….I’m underwhelmed by your sample size
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Preller threw Tingler under the bus. Tingler didn’t pay Hosmer over $140 million. Tingler didn’t trade to get Clevinger. Preller did those things. Preller also didn’t have to extend Tatis this early for that much money. He could have tried to sign him for less like the Braves did with Acuna and if Tatis doesn’t bite he could have waited a few years and saved over $20 million a year in the meantime to spend on additional players while they were supposed to be in contention. Imagine who the Padres could have added to this team this season if they weren’t spending that extra unnecessary cash on Tatis while also blowing money away on the combination of Hosmer, Clevinger and Snell. Preller made all those mistakes. Not Tingler. Now Preller is holding Tingler accountable for Preller’s mistakes. Preller is just trying to look good to his boss. This was ALL Preller’s fault. Don’t forget. This is the same guy who traded the farm for Matt Kemp, Craig Kimbrel and both Upton brothers all at a very high price point. One of the many players he gave up to do that was Max Fried. Very stupid. The owner is even dumber for rewarding Preller with an extension for wasting his money. Have any of you ever seen that movie “Draft Day” with Kevin Costner? Preller is perfect for the owner who wants to “make a splash” but doesn’t have a clue how to win. If there were a Bill Belichik of baseball the Padres owner would never hire him because his plan would just be too logical.
stlcards0911
They aren’t spending a boatload on Tatis YET? The way it’s structured he’s only making around what he normally would it’s the free agent and last arb year that are high dollar… I agree with what your saying to an extent just not with that
sdbaseballguy
The Tatis deal will ultimately save San Diego at least a 100 million in the end. It was a fantastic signing. Acuna made a terrible mistake with his contract.
genre99
Traded Trea Turner as well.
User 2997803866
Please tell a guy in his early 20’s that signing a $100 million contract is a mistake and see how you feel then. I get “he could have gotten more” but please. That kind of financial security at that age with all of the injuries that could happen. You can’t call that a mistake.

Stick with the Cubs. You know nothing about the Padres roster.
See the Padres 40 man roster and top prospects list.
Padres had something like 15 of their best players injured this year.
If those players are healthy next year, then they are right there with the Dodgers.
Padres farm system is still rated “top 10” even with all the trades/.

Preller should consider hiring Ron Washington as the new manager. As a manager he was good and as a coach he has been terrific with the Atlanta Braves. Washington and Tingler were finalists and Preller chose Tingler. To me the Padres should hire someone with experience. As a manager Tingler wasn’t that bad, the issue was the Padres have had many injuries and many bad decisions by Preller. For instance, trading some really good prospects so early and making so many trades to improve the roster. In the long run, that doesn’t help the organization.
zacharydmanprin
Yes, hire the 69 year old chain smoking, cocaine using former manager who had issues with egos and star players in the past. I am sure MLB and the MLBPA will be thrilled with that idea. Bruce Bochy is a better consideration – he already lives in San Diego and he can sign a lucrative short term deal. He can right the ship for a season or two. Then give way to someone who will follow the front office plan.

Deadguy
Bruce Bochy wouldn’t be caught dead in a padres uniform? No way, Ron Washington, or Buck Showalter are the two managers most likely to be managing the Padres next year if they really are firing Tingler.
If Ron really is doing Cocaine then I bet he gets the job, Aj Preller needs another person to do Cocaine with
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The manager in baseball is nowhere near as influential as the head coach of a football team. Once the line up is posted, all a baseball manager can do is hope the players perform well enough to win.
Given the horses, anyone can manage a team of studs. Be like Casey Stengal. when he had those talented Yankees teams. Let ’em play and stay out of their way.
Fred McGriff
@zacharydmanprin
You’re not discriminatory or a bigot, are you. Ageist, talking about how old he is,(did you also criticize the signing of Tony La Russa-most here did, even some writers for MLBTR) knocking someone because of what they do or what they’ve done in the past, but the thing is you haven’t got a clue. Washington knows more about the game than you’ll ever know, plus the thing is the Braves are that fortunate to have him. Fact-Ron Washington is one of the main reasons the Braves have been that good this year with their infield due to his coaching and his coaching alone. Fact-up until today the Braves had one of the best fielding records in all of MLB.
padreforlife
No on snow
RunDMC
Ron Washington resigned from his TEX gig to attend to personal matters, got the help he needed, then got back into the game. He’s one of the most respected coaches in the game for his legendary warmups and in-field techniques — yet he’s defined by some mistakes from 7 years ago? I respect him for making the hard decision to (temporarily) leave the game, get his house in order, then return, albeit, to a non-managerial position.
I understand the coke jokes are easy bulletin board material for someone that has nothing to say on the matter, but it will be a sever blow to any team that loses him. (Sorry for the coke pun — you’re not going to have all the fun). 🙂
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Yeah. I agree win Run. My joke was really just a response to his comment but I like Wash a lot. You also have to consider Wash tested positive exactly one time. They test coaches and managers now too. It wasn’t a scenario where he was having obvious off the field or on the field problems and rumors were swirling. It was a random drug test that happened to pop on him at that time. It used to be considered a big deal with coke because it was only testable for max 24 hours after you did it so if you were positive it meant you literally just did it. Wash probably didn’t realize that now they can test for it weeks later. He’s taken a whole bunch of screens before and since then and never tested positive for anything. The whole scenario suggests there is no evidence to support he ever did cocaine more than once. Imagine how many players and coaches in MLB have done coke once (or even more) and never tested positive for it. My guess is the number may approach somewhere near half the league. I don’t know about you guys but in college and even high school I was aware of a ton of people who at least tried cocaine. A lot of them were athletes too. I imagine in Wash’s age group he likely knew a whole lot more. That stuff was huge in the 80’s. It was like a status symbol. The other thing is even though Wash only tested positive once he never tried to pull a Ryan Braun or anything and say there must’ve been a one time mistake. He just admitted it like a real man and then served his time so he could get back to what he really loved, which is the game of baseball. Not to mention the guy managed one of the worst and most cursed franchises in baseball and brought them to their only world series appearance. Then he did the exact same thing again next year. The Rangers have been absolute garbage ever since he left. They should have brought him back. We’re not talking about a Dwight Golden, Daryl Strawberry, Ken Caminiti situation where everyone knew they were smoking crack all the time during the season. He tested positive for coke once in his life and it was during the off-season after he manages his team to a 2nd consecutive league championship. If every person who tried coke once lost their job in baseball half the league would probably be gone. I selfishly hope no one signs Washington but that’s only because I know how much the Braves need him. The Braves defense is so good all around because of Wash. Plus, the man single handedly had the absolute best line in the entire movie “Moneyball.” That alone made up for it.

La Russa is 77 and had multiple DUIs. Seems to have worked well for the ChiSox.

Preller got caught up in a playoff appearance in 2020 and reacted by making several big acquisitions of players with questions about their durability (Snell and Darvish). Tampa moved Snell and then proceeded to Winn 100 games. Darvish has had a spotty career with injuries throughout. Meanwhile, up north, Farhan Zaidi put together two castoff veteran pitchers having career years and bounce back season from Crawford and Belt along with role players to win at least 106 games. Most acquisitions were “under the radar”, but demonstrated his intelligent approach to building a winning team. That’s what SD so desperately needs.
Weasel 2
Really? I think Preller deserves the bigger share of the blame. They should both be out.
all in the suit that you wear
I agree. Fire Preller and hire Theo Epstein and stay out of his way.
sdbaseballguy
Epstein ain’t coming to San Diego. Lol. He’s way beyond them.
cars
Have you noticed the disaster the Cubs are in because of Epstein. He screwed up with the Cubs then ran away. Epstein also did the same thing in Boston. You really don’t want Epstein.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Yeah. That really is Theo’s style. His motto is basically, “Hire me. Pay me a ton. Let me spend a bunch of your money to buy a championship and then I’ll get the heck out of dodge when the contracts start looking bad so the long term contracts don’t hurt my win-loss record as a GM when I interview for my next job.” It’s actually not a terrible plan if you want to pay a ton for a real quick championship. It’s definitely not a philosophy that’s going to keep your team competitive in the long term though. He gets more credit than he deserves. It’s a lot easier to build a championship caliber ball club if you only go to teams whose owner is going to let you spend enough to buy all the players from the very top of the free agency list. Those guys are expensive because they are the obvious choice. A lot of GMs would do the exact same thing he does every free agent period if they had the funds to do it. It’s not like Theo somehow sees something they don’t in the players. He is just able to afford them. It’s far more impressive to me when a GM pulls off a championship with very little money. I haven’t seen anything in Theo’s resume to imply he’s even capable of doing that. Theo is actually pretty unnecessary for any team. The owner could just get a puppet GM and tell him to buy all the top dollar free agents who could improve the team in anyway. That seems to be Theo’s plan of action. Once you consider the busts he’s also gonna pay a ton for like Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Jason Heyward the number of wins Theo gets out of every dollar he spends is pretty unimpressive. Then once you consider how much profits are going to drop for the half decade the owners team will likely suck after Theo bails some people might think of it as a bad investment all around. He did break the curses for both the Cubs and Red Sox but you gotta wonder how many other GMs could do the exact same thing with that kind of money to throw around. I bet it’s at least several. The GMs in Oakland, Tampa, Milwaukee, Saint Louis, Atlanta and maybe even Miami could all end up winning with that kind of money. Signing Theo is more of a sign that an owner is willing to spend a bunch of cash than it is Theo actually some kind of great GM. The other guys have to worry about payroll and keeping their teams perennially competitive year end and year out with every deal they make. Theo seems to just worry about winning at least 1 championship but at absolutely any cost with no concern about how he’s going to effect the organizational long term future since he won’t be there anyway. It seems a lot easier to do the job the way Theo gets to do it.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Theo guts a team of its resources to win a WS. With no depth on the farm, and a defection by a FA or two, in a few years he’s left with squadoodle. Then he leaves and gets paid by a bigger fool of an owner. Padres don’t need Theo.
dodgers32
Look no further than the Tampa Bay Rays. Smart spending, brilliant talent evaluation and drafts, and key acquisitions that are flashy but add real strategic value to their team. Trades of Snell, Matt Liberatore (brought back Arozarena), and Adames and Castillo (added depth and reliability to the bullpen) didn’t get a whole lot of attention but is one of the reasons they’ve got the most wins in the AL. All with a small market budget. Preller needs to go.
dodgers32
Also, Tampa produces a pipeline of successful GMs for other teams wise enough to hire them away.
rondon
Right. Theo bringing World Series championships to the 2 teams who needed them most, the Red Sox and Cubs, is a real bum.
SportsFan0000
Epstein started in the markeing department in San Diego under Team Pres Larry Luchino.
Without his experience in San Diego, Epstein would be in advertising.
SportsFan0000
Larry Lucchino was running those Red Sox Teams as Team President and calling the shots with the final say on player decisions, not Theo.
Theo went to Chicago to prove that he could win without Larry Lucchino and without the “deep pockets” Red Sox ownership group.

Preller has survived years of underperformance. Dude must know where the bodies are buried. Clean house altogether.
Deadguy
Why the hell didn’t they just fire him with Rothschild then? This makes no sense? Foolishness on behalf of the Padres, guess Ron Washington will be interviewed again?
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
When the Injury Bug landed atop your starting pitchers, save for Musgrave, how can you blame the manger? Add in Hosmer once again proving he ain’t worth the cheese they are paying him, an injury plagued season by Nola and mostly on-again-off-again performances by our outfield, and what you get is what you got. To wit, a losing team.
Going forward, changes do need to be made, but I question if the manager’s job is where to start.
Robrock30
Maybe the Mets will hire him. LOL
It worked for Gabe Kapler.
ChiSox_Fan
Surprised Cubs didn’t fire Ross already!
amk1920
Among all his bad roster moves, Preller is now 0-2 on managers while a guy he let go in Dave Roberts has the highest win % of all time. Most overrated exec in baseball.
baines03
No way. He’s the best GM in baseball at altering medical records.
Deleted_User
No that’s Michael Hill
Dorothy_Mantooth
You and I could have won 90% of the games Dave Roberts did with that Dodgers roster. If you want to see how a manager can impact wins & losses, look no further than Kapler with the Giants this year. He worked some serious magic with that team. He’s the runaway NL manager of the year. He should get a clean sweep of all first place votes.
Camacho
Wait then what’s the excuse for tingler and the roster he was given?
amk1920
Your hypothetical doesn’t mean a thing. Dave has the results. He clearly would have been a better manager than what the Padres have picked.
truthlemonade
Tingler never played in the majors. I wonder how much that affects his ability to lead a team.
If a player is not putting in the effort, or is making mistakes, I wonder how well that player would take criticism from a guy who never played in the majors.
jim stem
@truth. I’m a Mets fan and have often wondered the same thing. How do players really respond to a corporate manager with no major league experience, making 1/100 salary they do?
Now, as far as the no mlb playing experience goes, the grizzled managers of the past 2 decades were different. The Leylands, Cox’s, Lasordas and Herzog’s had YEARS of proven leadership and success. Much of which was gained through years of experience in the minors and players and coaches. Personally, I’m tired of ‘data analysis’ narrative. Let keyboard jockeys print out spread sheets and charts as assistants, but please, stop with high ranking on field assumptions that managers need to be stat guys.
Orel Saxhiser
Ridiculous. In my 54 years as a Dodger fan, Roberts has easily been the best manager they’ve had. No sleeping in the dugout (Alston). No phony Hollywood crap (Lasorda). If not for Bowie Kuhn in ’81 and Kirk Gibson fixing the losing culture in ’88, Swami Tommy never would have won a championship. People who think Roberts isn’t a good manager don’t know what they’re talking about. Please don’t flatter yourself by thinking you can win almost as much as he does. Judging by your posting history, you probably have a difficult time managing your sock drawer.
claude raymond
Cey Hey, I felt Mattingly was treated unfairly by fans and media. How would you compare him and Roberts? I like Roberts but I like Mattingly as well. And your take on Lasorda is spot on. And as you know, my allegiance is to Giants
sdbaseballguy
Mattingly was terrible.
claude raymond
Manager of the Year 2020
dodgers32
Mattingly was learning on the job while in LA. His experience there made him an effective manager with a seriously undertalented Marlins team with a very weak front office. Jester should be able to change that, but it will be slow going. Friedman wanted his own guy in LA and took a lot of criticism for hiring Roberts but then provided him with the talent to win. All managers are then responsible for shaping that talent into a championship caliber team.
dodgers32
Jeter.
SportsFan0000
Dave Roberts is awesome. He was very smart to move on to LA. too.
WtfMate
The Giants are winning in spite of Kapler… They have talented guys that are putting things together… Kapler stays out of the way just enough to allow them to generally be successful
outinleftfield
According to the Giants, they are winning because they have 100% buy in on the analytical data that their front office is giving them and Kapler is extremely good at relaying that info in a way that be used by the players at bat to at bat. At least that is what the players and GM are saying.
WtfMate
Which means Kapler is simply an analytics delivery guy, staying out of the way of the team by letting data make decisions for him rather than intuition.
Yankee Clipper
So instead of MOY, we should have Analytics Department of the Year! Why should the manager get all the credit for relaying a message well….
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
That’s an absurd statement about Kapler. You make it sound like each day he’s no more than doggie doo doo but his players come to the rescue with bouquets of roses to cover up the stink.
claude raymond
Wtfmate, Giants broke all time record for pinch hit home runs. The manager decides who pinch hits. Often using intuition. I’ve watched every single game. Kapler has been excellent. If you think he just gets “out of the way” and let’s analytics make decisions then you are a buffoon
Fred McGriff
@Dorothy_Mantooth
You forgot Snitker, even though at times I haven’t liked some of his decisions, to keep the team in it after losing Acuna, Soroka, and Ozuna was a very good effort.
SportsFan0000
Dodgers and Rays have the most “player depth” in MLB…which is a huge factor also. When someone goes down, then an equal or greater talent from their minor leagues and/or from trades (using minor league depth) takes over.
Tatsumaki
Nice giving dave props when his team has the highest payroll yearly and a full team of scouts and team management that heavily invest in analytics. Dave is arguably one of the worst mangers on one of the best teams ever. If they had a better manager they likely would have more than 1 title over the past 7 years.
amk1920
Roberts changed the Dodgers culture. They are a much tougher postseason team under him than with Mattingly. The comments trying to discredit what he has done are flat out wrong.
outinleftfield
I think I read that including luxury tax penalties the Dodgers spent $510 million more than the 2nd highest spending team since 2013 and that the Rays didn’t spend $510 million over that same period. I may be wrong about that, so if you are a whiz at looking that stuff up please do.
dodger1958
outin If not for teams like the Dodgers incurring tax penalties teams like the Rays, who are subsidized monetarily, couldn’t compete. Then all the money saved would be pocketed by billionaire owners.
When it comes to how much owners are making you need look no further than the sale of the Marlins. Purchased in 2002 for something like 160 million and sold less than 20 years later for something like 1.2 billion. The Marlins. The Marlins.
jay13
Wow… you couldn’t be more wrong about Dave Roberts. He really is a bad manager. He is as good as a quarter for decisions.
Team is ridiculous, front office has deep pockets and the scouting department might be one of the best in baseball. Roberts has all the tools.
amk1920
Would you prefer Andy Green or Jayce Tingler managing? lmao
Orel Saxhiser
You are wrong about Roberts. I watch every Dodger game and he is as good as it gets.
jay13
Cey Hey…. I don’t see it. He constantly gets in his own way. If you watch the games then you see it. He is not the worst manager in baseball but he has alot to work on.
James1955
amk1920. Roberts has the highest winning percentage of active Managers.
Orel Saxhiser
Yet some people think he is a bad manager because…well you know.
Yankee Clipper
Winning percentage for managers with the team he has is analogous to pitchers with the most wins pitching for LAD, with a stacked team. It’s not the most relevant argument to the manager’s capabilities. That said, Dave Roberts has been one of the top managers in the game for a while, imho, and I watch many teams’ games. I don’t believe he is the best, but absolutely one of the best right now.
It’s also antithetical to criticize him for having an outstanding roster. In some cases, that actually makes it harder to manage. I just wish the Yankees would follow LAD’s blueprint instead of trying to hybrid a Rays blueprint with their own, as LAD is a mirror image of NY in terms of market, capital, and expectations.

Dave Roberts is seriously overrated. Most of us can point to a handful of bad moves that cost his team in the postseason the past few years. Heck, if Cash doesn’t remove Snell too soon, do the Rays force game seven? And maybe win? As a Rays fan, even I know last year should not have even gone six games. How many ws titles would LAD have w a competent manager?
SportsFan0000

Preller will offer Bochy double what he got with the Giants. It’ll help him save face for this embarrassment of a season.

No manager is going to magically turn that team into a contender.
DarkSide830
hell of a lot more talented than most teams in the game…
wallabeechamp
They are top heavy with 2 legit superstars & a couple of solid complimentary pieces in Grisham and Cronenworth. After that, the talent get very ordinary, even mediocre.
Orel Saxhiser
Some restrictive contracts, too. The way Preller was making trades and throwing around money, it seemed like he was trying to save his job. Then came the Tatis extension and the way-too-early hype in the off-season. Ownership must have bought into it, which would explain why they jumped the gun in extending Preller. They didn’t want to be held at gunpoint after the juggernaut Padres won the World Series.
What a mess. Now it’s time to rethink the whole thing. The two superstars aside, it somewhat feels like they’re back at square one. Those two nasty brawls in the stands at Petco recently are kind of symbolic. Padres fans fighting with Padres fans. A team that loses together eats its own together. And if Preller did indeed have a win-or-else ultimatum, then shame on ownership for allowing him to spend and barter at will. Preller was good as gone. Instead, he has job security that he didn’t earn.

Lifelong Padres fan. Agree Tingler should go. But unfortunately says something really bad about this franchise that this would leak on game 161 of the season. Bush-league.
Unclenolanrules
Preller needs to own up to this and he should go. He is too impulsive and makes too many bad decisions like he can’t wait to open his presents on Christmas morning.
I was always told it is a poor craftsman who blames his tools. Preller is the GM. Unless ownership interferes with the team’s decisions, he is at the top, therefore the buck stops with him.
Yankee Clipper
The thing about people like Preller: they are not introspective and don’t take blame. They hold others (Tingler) accountable for decisions and yet justify their own when they’re just as culpable. It’s a shell game of blame and a character flaw to the core. Tingler was handpicked by Preller, so from go, Preller is responsible for the performance of his brand new, inexperienced manager because he specifically chose him.

FredMcGriff for the HOF
I don’t really know much about the Padres manager but if he allowed that ridiculous oversized spinner neck chain he deserves to be fired.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Why does it bother you? It’s not your neck. That mentality more than anything is why baseball struggles to attract young fans.
Tatsumaki
Because fans obsessing about a neck chain are so important to the sport. Your probably the same dude that thinks pumping home runs is good for the sport, could be why it the few viewers that watched baseball have stopped
Chipsss
No it isn’t. What a ridiculous statement lol
Appalachian_Outlaw
I actually do feel that way about celebrating homeruns.
If you think it’s about the chain, you miss the point. It’s about letting players express themselves, and young fans finding a player they connect with and root for.
Orel Saxhiser
They went from insane dugout celebrations to barely interacting with one another. If that’s your idea of players expressing themselves, you can keep the medallion for yourself.
Yankee Clipper
Appalachian: Here is one major problem I have with the current trend in our sport – we are encouraging neck chains, jackets, hats, etc for individual home runs at the expense of demanding/rewarding teamwork. For example, your team is down 8 runs and you’re not making the postseason when you were all but guaranteed on paper, yet you hit a non-essential, non-impactful home run and you get a spooning neck chain donned for a dugout walk.
It’s going the wrong direction… and the managers are okay with it because it’s “players expressing themselves and relating to…someone.”
prov356
Clipper – I cringe when a mediocre player on a losing team celebrates a HR like he just walked off game 7 of the WS. Then they pound their chest like they are the GOAT. One of the many reasons I don’t watch football is I can’t stand when some no-name player makes one tackle and does a 30 second dance like it won the SB.
One of my favorite baseball movie scenes is in Money Ball when Beane hears the team celebrating in the clubhouse after another loss. He smashes the radio, tells Giambi to get off the table, and has the them listen to silence and says, “This is what losing sounds like”.
With todays generation of players (with some exceptions like Trout and a few others) it’s more about them and less about the team. That has to be hard for an older manager to manage.

Depends on how they handle the clubhouse. Injuries affected both teams, but it seemed Bell had the respect of the clubhouse and there was no in-fighting, which can lead to a better chance at turning things around next season. Appears the same could not be said for Tingler. Obviously, decision-making plays a major role. Bell does seem to have a better grasp on game management, too.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Cuddy Fox:
I feel the same way. Here in Philly, Dave Dombrowski said Joe Girardi will be back next year. Me? I’d show them both the door. Talented team, and expensive too. Yet here we sit with one game to play and all we have to show for it is a team that barely played .500 ball.
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski was just hired 5-6 months ago.
He is evaluating and retooling that team.
Dombrowski cannot hit, pitch, catch the ball or save games in the bullpen.
Phillies Bullpen needs work.
Phillies Drafts needs work.
The last GM left him a mess that he has to retool/clean up at the same time as competing for the playoffs.
It is a tall order, but based on his past successful track record, Dombrowski is up to the task.
Metsin777
Tingler was awful. Stupid lineups and did not use the starters properly. If you go 0-6 to the Mets im sorry but you are not a playoff calibur team. They need a manager with some life

Yes, the early season series against the Mets should have been an eye opener. Good pitching made them look like a AAA team. Sadly, our own manager couldn’t keep his own team afloat after the all star break either. I wonder if Bobby V has any interest, or Ray Knight?

Strangely enough the front office never fires itself.
fox471 Dave
Still on the front office I see. Who would you fire Blue? Who?
BlueSkies_LA
A very strange comment and question.
Orel Saxhiser
Very strange. What’s wrong with the Padres is way beyond a firing or two. For all of Preller’s and Tingler’s faults, the people who control the purse strings signed off on everything. They gave Preller carte blanche to conduct an insane flurry of roster moves in an effort to win now and save his job. The same Padres fans who want Preller gone today were on board with it. They thought Preller was a master wheeler-and-dealer at the 2020 trade deadline, and again over the winter. Look out, Dodgers. We’re coming to get you.
Let’s be real. That was never going to work. Whoever the Padres fire and hire this off-season, the team won’t be transformed into championship contenders by next spring. Same folks controlling the purse strings, though the carte blanche is probably gone. Would you trust Preller to fix this mess?
dodger1958
Well the primary owner is the grandson of Walter O’Malley and Peter O’Malley’s nephew. At least he opened up the purse strings. And he is not meddling like Cohen.
ldoggnation
Mike Scosia. I know he says he’s retired.
jay13
If Scioscia is willing to come back(which I think I read he is done managing), that is kind of intriguing to me. The location would make it prime for him not to change what he used to have.
Ronk325
Do you realize how bad Scioscia was the last few years with the Angels?
ldoggnation
Do you know how bad manyof his teams
were? Because of injuries to pitchers and other bad, bad signings, he always kept his teams in contention until the last month or less.
Several years the Angels would lead the majors in most pitchers used.
Mike was a great manager.
ldoggnation
He did come out of retirement to manage our Olympic team. We lost the gold to Japan’s allstar major league team.
Ronk325
Scioscia is a relic of the past who can’t manage in today’s game. Also are you forgetting that Scioscia was a big reason why the Angels signed Josh Hamilton instead of re signing Zack Greinke after 2012?
Orel Saxhiser
Scioscia resigned to keep from being fired for his mishandling of Ohtani. I wouldn’t want him near my team, especially a chaotic one like the Padres.
jay13
Mike Scioscia was a damn good manager until the management in Anaheim decided to get more involved with the product on the field(would be surprised on how much they tried to tell him how to do his job with lineups and pitching) instead of building their analytics and training facilities. Towards the end of his tenure I think he got tired of doing it, as shown with him not wanting to manage anymore.
AgeeHarrelsonJones
Luis Rojas would be a fine fit in SD
jim stem
Rojas, anywhere but the Mets!
Orel Saxhiser
Mets fans and Padres fans are two of a kind. They grossly overrate the talent, then scream “fire the manager” when mediocrity happens. Girardi for Kapler. Girardi for Kapler. Giradi for Kapler. Phillies fans also overrate the talent on their team’s roster.
86mets
As a Mets fan Rojas REALLY, REALLY is a bad manager. He could take the Dodgers roster and finish .500. Or worse. They say he is Felipe Alous son. I say he was adopted because he has none of Felipe’s baseball intellect. None.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
The Mets demise this year wasn’t the fault of Rojas. Look at all the injuries and games missed by Nimmo, Lindor, Conforto, Davis, McNeill, Carrasco, Thor and some guy named, Jacob de Grom.
You can’t win at poker if they take away all your Aces and Picture Cards. Frankly, I was surprised they did as well as they did. Add in a sub-par year by Dom Smith, too.
86mets
No. Injuries are not his fault. It’s his in game management that’s his downfall. And he just seems soooo clueless at times. He can get guys to like him but he can’t get the best out of them. He’s just so overmatched as a manager. Billy Martin could out manage him from the grave tbh.
dodger1958
Lou look at the Dodgers.
Reigning Cy Young pitcher suspended for 1/2 season.
Seager out 65 games,
Mookie missing something like 35-40 games,
May up and coming pitcher with huge upside out with TJ
Pollack one of the better hitters in MLB out 7 weeks,
Kershaw out over 2 months.
Gonsolin missed multiple weeks.
Muncey and JT also hit the DL along with Bellinger.
Nelson having a dynamic comeback, out after surgery.
Multiple other decent relievers out for the year,
Yet, the Dodgers still in the hunt for a ring,
Marcus was already taken
Who do the Pads target now?
tbone0816
As a Cardinals fan, I would love for them to hire Skip Schumaker as their new manager!!
86mets
Think he was a finalist when they hired Tingler. Should be a candidate again, unless Padres ownership wants a veteran manager rather than a first timer. That wouldn’t surprise me after the collapse this year.
extreme113
Does Preller have compromising pics of the owner?
Deleted_User
No. But he does have a contract extension that runs through 2026.
outinleftfield
I think people overestimate how important a contract is for FO personnel. Unless you re talking about Theo Epstein, GMs make less in 5 years than a guy like Fletcher or since we are talking about the Padres, Profar, make in a single season.
If the Padres owners want Preller out they will do what they did with Mark Conner who signed a new deal at the beginning of 2021. They will reassign him to another position.
Deleted_User
They didn’t extend him for that long (when his previous contract wasn’t even close to expiring) just to let him go before the previous contract was even up. And Mark Conner was promoted. I don’t think Preller (or anyone else) can be demoted without either their consent or being released with ownership still paying the balance of their contract.
orange2001
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pads made a run at Scioscia. They have a solid nucleus and Scioscia could be the man to turn them around.

Fowler wanted Ron Washington last year and Preller insisted on Tingler, now to save his own skin (if it does) Preller had to fire his guy.
If or when the Padres make it official i wonder if Washington will be back on the teams list, if not Buck Showalter might be a good option as well
Monkey’s Uncle
I’d love to see Washington get another chance. I always found him to be a great baseball mind and an interesting personality. He obviously made some mistakes on and off the field but as far as I know he owned up to them.

Fowler wanted Bochy. He said so himself in several interviews and even recounted a short phone all he had with him after he retired from managing the Giants.
Washington was Preller’s choice to interview because of his relationship with him in Texas. I think Tingler was chosen because the owners didn’t want to have to deal with the PR nightmare if Washington had another relapse in judgement. Washington’s sins of cocaine use, infidelity, and accusations of sexual harassments are not something team owners are especially keen on dealing with from their manager.

Tingler may be a great guy, but Padres need a manager who knows how to use spring training to prepare for a 162 game season. Set the foundation for how you are going to be a winner every inning, every day, every week. A season is a grind and requires a disciplined approach. Take what the pitcher gives you.
Ronk325
Everyone other than Preller knew Tingler was a bad hire from the start. He if it wasn’t for Luis Rojas, Tingler would have been the worst manager in the league by a mile
Rsox
This is the problem with hiring “quality control” coaches to manage the team. They basically hired company “yes” men. For Preller it was guy he knew from the Rangers. For Rojas it was as a favor to Robinson Cano who promptly re-paid that favor by getting suspended for this entire season.
8791Slegna
Sosh’s last few years with the Angels weren’t great, but he was the right guy in 2000 when they had a veteran team, and it worked out at least through 2009. If he does get hired, he should bring Erstad with him. He was the leader on those early Scioscia teams.
Bart Harley Jarvis
The Padres need to hire a manager who commands greater respect in the clubhouse and dugout, as well as someone who doesn’t wear a uniform that fits like pajamas. Maybe there’s a connection.

Next up Preller. I Remember back in April when the Padres won a game against Dodgers, they where celebrating like they won the World Series. Everyone was saying Padres/Dodgers the best rivalry in the sport, Padres the best team in bas. Fast forward to September Padres were eliminated from the playoffs, have a losing record, no manager, and currently on a 7 game losing streak. Good times
Orel Saxhiser
The Dodgers have beaten the Padres eight straight games. For the record. I had the Dodgers no fewer than 12 games ahead of the Padres at the start of the season (and the Mets to finish around their customary 77-85). I’m not gloating as I royally screwed up some others. But it’s my belief that, If a team has to make several major moves in the off-season to contend, they aren’t really ready to contend. Continuity and matters in baseball. Everyone should remember that next spring when they roll out their predictions. Don’t pick teams like the Padres and Mets just because everyone else is doing it.

Buck Showalter would be a great fit. someone to just steer the ship and not f$%$ it up.
Orel Saxhiser
Hiring a new Padres manager is going to be a problem if the two superstars think they should have a say in it. Just as in the spring, the team is still far from contending. Yet people are still overrating the talent on that roster.
Monkey’s Uncle
It’s definitely going to be a problem if rumors are true that Preller is only going to hire someone who will in effect kiss his behind. Because like you said, Machado and Tatis want a say in things too. There’s only so many behinds that one guy can kiss at a time… or so I’ve heard.
Orel Saxhiser
Preller will already be making his third managerial hire. At some point, enough is enough. If Preller’s lucky, Machado and Tatis will both lobby for the same guy. Either way, it will take patience to mold the Padres into a contender. In the meantime, every Preller move will probably face added scrutiny from his bosses. A zillion roster moves every winter is no way to build a winner.
Btw, here’s Buck Showalter discussing/defending Machado after the “Johnny Hustle” controversy. Does this mean Tatis needs to get on board with Buck as a candidate?

They all attended the same high school.
Orel Saxhiser
Is that true? Btw, Dierker is a huge music fan who about a decade ago put together a baseball-themed musical. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine spotted Dierker on the dance floor of some Texas honky-tonk. When the friend asked me to guess which Astros pitcher from our younger he saw on the honky-tonk hardwood floor, he was stunned when I immediately and confidently said, “Larry Dierker.” The show Dierker was at was, I think, a reunion of the band Spirit…something that involved Mark Andes.

Vanmorrissey
Disagree completely on the Tingler being the fall guy. He was an unknown new to managing and proved he could not handle the heat. His lineup was not good, it was near great and they bungled it starting in June and even though there were some injuries, not overwhelming, they piled up losses against such teams as the Rockies, Diamondbacks, even the Marlins and could not even compete against the Dodgers and Giants the last 3 months, they just stunk, period. 4 All Stars and the team finishes under 500? Surely the players fault also but you can’t fire them. This is the first step in the right direction. They need someone who’s gone through the ups and downs of a long season, someone experienced. Sorry, Tingler needed to go, period.
driftcat28 2
Finally. He should’ve never been at the helm to begin with
jay13
I think a name that needs to be considered that might not lead the Pack but should, Sandy Alomar Jr. He has all the credentials besides experience as a manager. I have always thought he should be given a chance and with the blend of youth and vets on this team, I think he would be a solid hire. I doubt he gets a shot though as his fire has kind of gone out since he will be with the Indians most likely
ClevelandSpidersFromMars
Cleveland fans will trade you Alomar. In return, all we want is for Preller to keep answering his phone.

There’s two things that stick out to me:
1) SD is the only team in MLB to have a positive RD and losing record
2) They have a very poor record in one-run games
Makes me think Tingler was poor at least with regard to in-game strategy.
Deleted_User
You’d know that if you watched the games. I was at that 16-inning game where he kept having to use pitchers as pinch-hitters and I believe the Dodgers still had one bench bat left when the game ended.
Faith in the Padres
When Tingler was more worried about how the Texas Rangers felt about Tatis jr hitting that Grand Slam thats when im sure ownership, fans, and everyone took a step back and had reservstions about him.
Padres should hire a veteran manager. They need leadership in the dugout. They also need to overhaul their pitching department and take a look at that. Too many guys wound up getting hurt. Maybe its bad luck. Maybe its analytics not syncing. Either way they should examine and figure out the best approach to keep guys healthy.
Monkey’s Uncle
I completely agree with you, but I don’t think it will happen. Preller seems to me to like the spotlight a little too much to hire known managerial commodity. But that team needs a firm veteran hand in the dugout, like yesterday.
Deleted_User
I know they aren’t “proven veteran managers” per se. But names I like as the next manager are Moises Alou, Mark Loretta, David Eckstein and Chris Denorfia. But if the reports of Preller only hiring guys he’s familiar with and who he knows won’t disagree with him are indeed true then that probably won’t happen.

Tingler is in a rough spot and seems to be the scape goat.
He was 2nd in manager of the year last year to being potentially fired.
This is all about the Padres making big moves that added expectations and pressure to win now. They didn’t this year.
Injuries played a big role. Snell was off for most of the year, and as noted in article their youngsters haven’t developed. Hosmer’s contract still awful. Pham struggled this year as well. Grisham didn’t seem to be very consistent.
How much is that on Tingler? Idk ♂️

Preller’s been in San Diego for seven seasons now. He immediately made trades to produce a win-now team that didn’t win, correctly opted to rebuild, and then made several blockbuster trades and spent hundreds of millions on players.
Since 2014, the Padres have had five managers (three permanent), and now Preller will be making his third managerial hire. And after spending so much money the past few years, he has exactly one winning record in a 60-game season to show for all his efforts.
Not only does he still have a job, but he’s been extended another five years. It’s just baffling that you can produce so little on-field success, and yet be completely safe.
The profit margins must be great for the ownership because there’s no way any general manager can have the resources, control, and patience Preller has been given and keep their job without winning.

I don’t think Tingler ever did himself any favors. He seemed to lack any sway over the clubhouses internal affairs, as made evident in the Machado-Tatis incident.
Let’s also not forget him criticizing – publicly criticizing – Tatis for swinging 3-0 in a blowout game. Even if it was stat padding, Tatis was just trying to have fun, Officer Tingler.
Of course, AJ Preller is also guilty for this year’s disappointing results because of two (not including hiring Tingler) very big reasons.
Padres lacked or underused starting pitching depth from Triple.
Padres failed to acquire a starting pitcher of even average ability by the trade deadline. Que up Jake Arrieta and Vince Velasquez instead.
end.
WtfMate
Who did they have that they could trade to acquire pitching at the deadline? They sold the farm already
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Though he hasn’t done well of late, lots of teams would have ponied up to acquire Gore.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
He should be able to trade salary and prospects to the Tigers…but alas,Al Avila lacks SENE.
Yankee Clipper
Tingler was in a unique position – he was an inexperienced player, manager, and baseball executive who answered to a GM with baseball ADD. I’m not defending Tingler, only pointing out it certainly was not easy for him in that position.
rocky7
Tatis swinging 3-0 “was just trying to have fun”? Watch much baseball do ya?
Is the $350 million they are paying him, not enough fun?
ShootyBabbit
I wonder if former Padre Kevin Mitchell would be a good fit as manager?
Yankee Clipper
It’s too bad Mr. Padre died – not sure if he would’ve wanted to manage, but he would’ve been very well respected and he was an incredible person.
BuyBuyMets
Ray Kroc?
Yankee Clipper
Uh……
sergefunction
That’s a real-life train wreck I’d watch.
Kevin M is still extremely scary despite his significant health issues. I always thought a scary manager was a necessity for success with certain players. Scary and large. Uber respected. Few like that exist in baseball, so grab one while you can. A few Padres need that type. Jayce Tingler isn’t that.
Bochy is an example. Good person, well-liked. He’s also a giant who could snap one in half if properly provoked, so it is advisable to play well and do things right so he isn’t.
Kevin Mitchell. His snaps are still terrifying.
Let him manage for Steve Cohen. We’d all tune in. SNAP!

AJ Preller has a long way to go to match the king of hypocrites, Theo Epstein. Epstein has thrown more coaches, especially hitting coaches, including Mgr. Joe Maddon under the bus, and fired them because Epstein is not man enough to except blame for his many mistakes.

Fire Preller too. Please, god. Fire Preller too.
48-team MLB
It’s time for the Padres to relocate. They will now be known as the San Jose Pterodactyls.
Yankee Clipper
Pterodactyls may take issue with that (see Cleveland’s…predicament). Maybe they can be named something far more generic, like the Protectors.
riffraff
Fun science fact – did you know you cannot hear Pterodactyls go to the bathroom? Its because the p is silent.
WtfMate
A team with Manny Machado and his absurd contract will never sniff a ring, unless it’s a team like the Dodgers or the Yankees who can afford it.
Yankee Clipper
Yankees will take him! But only in the later part of his contract when it’s all downhill.
getrealgone2
Hasn’t Preller been choking this gimmick for awhile? When is he shown the door?
Louholtz22
It’s completely Tinglers fault that Snell is a head case and Darvish is a China doll. Oh, it’s also all on him that Tatis has a gimpy shoulder. Give me a break. The GM is 100 percent to blame.
phillyballers
Wait what? They didn’t win the World Series? I stopped watching baseball in spring training because it was a forgone conclusion. Omg what else have I missed?
bobtillman
Proof positive yet again that poop flows down hill. I can hear AJ telling ownership now: “Hey, I gave him an All Star roster; HE messed it up”. MLB is a CYA universe.
Tingler will get another job; he’s relatively well respected.
bravesfan
Got to point the finger at someone. That roster is too talented to end up not making the playoffs
hyraxwithaflamethrower
A roster that talented has no business being under .500. This is the right move.
TheRealMilo
The Rangers will likely fire Chris Woodward in a few days. Then Tingler and Woodward can switch spots and continue the ongoing Rangers/Padres inbreeding fiasco. These two franchises have become so intertwined with incompetence and shared front office personnel that it is almost difficult to tell them apart. There’s no credible, veteran manager that would ever want to get into business with these two clown shows.
IloveMACfootball
Should have been gone the moment he told Tatis to not swing 3-0.
geg42
Well they can’t fire dumb luck
Tom the ray fan
Aj preller has the best job in the world. Controls everything, does any move he wants and never is held responsible just blames on everyone else and just gets rid of them. He must have some serious dirt on someone in ownership bc idk how u extend him for another 5 years. One winning season in 6 years. Nothing else needs to be said
prov356
I haven’t followed the Padres closely since I lived in San Diego and would go to the Murph to see a game. But I remember all of the hype this past winter with everyone applauding all of the moves Preller made. It didn’t equate to a winning season and now everyone is critical of the moves they praised six months ago. Whatever.
But with Tingler, when I heard about him admonishing Tatis for hitting a granny, I thought he shouldn’t be managing a baseball team.
Peart of the game
Some of the blame rightly lies with Tingler for making poor in game decisions but more of the blame involves a ton of injuries and a few bad signings/trades (Hosmer and others.) That said, he has made plenty of very good moves such as acquiring relievers cheaply, trading for prospects to make big moves like the Snell trade.
Deleted_User
No point in trading for prospects if you’re just going to give them away for guys who are injured a lot/not that good.
prov356
I like Scioscia for the job. Many have been critical of him, me included at times, but he has the mangerial experience and the respect as a player with no baggage. His downslide with the Angels started when Moreno stopped valuing pitching and spent on monster contracts for position players past their prime.
Anyone can be enticed to come out of retirement. I think he would be the right fit.
bippy boy
Clint Hurdle . Lol
dodgersvictoryagain
Hearing Bochy is a serious candidate. As a Dodger fan I can’t say I’d like that very much
Deleted_User
1. Retired
2. Not Preller’s style
prov356
Remove – you’ve said that several times now. Have you ever heard of anyone coming out of retirement? I have.
CrikesAlready
San Diego radio is saying that Bochy is not interested.
Preller apparently meddled in drills during spring training and micro-managed.
Bochy is a HOF manager, not some wunderkid’s puppet.
My guess is, because he won’t take the job, the Tingler announcement may be delayed or not happen.
Bochy and Darren Balsley are both locals, wouldn’t be surprised if they came back, if Preller is fired, that is.
rhswanzey
I think some of the GFIN moves were a little weird – they paid an awful lot for their catching corps, for example, despite previously having a pre-arb elite defender there.
There isn’t a team in the league that wouldn’t be affected by being without most of their projected rotation.
axisofhonor25
Let’s call how it is. Preller lucked out with Tatis, and failed with every other move. Remember he’s still paying Hosmer a great chunk of payroll and he’s not even a starter anymore. He also did not take in to consideration clubhouse culture, as evident with rostering too many big personalities on one club. Never works out. Preller should be the one getting ousted here.
CrikesAlready
San Diego radio is full of similar stories about Preller interfering with drills and training sessions during spring training. Word is also that Bruce Bochy has already confided that he wouldn’t take the job.
AJ is baseball’s version of Adolph Napoleon Bonaparte Hitler.
SportsFan0000
Fire AJ Preller OR reassign him to the scouting department.
Honestly, Preller SPENT 5+ years with high draft picks and very patient fans helping build a “top 2” farm system in MLB.
Then, Preller systematically destroyed the Padres farm system dealing 30+ top young players and prospects for old, broken down, injury prone, under producing, higher priced veterans. Other teams were reloaded with talented, great young Padres farm hands that helped them compete in this years pennant races and beyond.
Padres fans now feel like they are “Charlie Brown” and AJ Preller is Lucy holding the football ready to yank it away before the kick into pennant contention.
Thank you Preller and Padres for the one sided trades!
Signed Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners,
AND Thank you for our future contending teams:
Signed: Cubs, Nationals, Pirates and much more!
FIRE AJ PRELLER.
MAKE HIM THE GARDENER, GROUNDS KEEPER OR THE JANITOR IF YOU HAVE TO PAY HIM.
