How much of the As lack of spending is due to Beane conditioning them that they do not need to spend to have talent and win enough games?
zacharydmanprin
Probably not much credibility since the fact that when the A’s do spend money – they fail, miserably.

Hey Mark, thanks for the chat tonight. Question for you: it seems to me that the Giants are always under-represented in the chats. Is that b/c there are few Giants questions posed, or are you and the other writers “anti-Giants?” I always ask a question if the chat is open, but it never gets answered. Not complaining, and I love your chats…just curious! Thanks!!
tstats
I’m not mark… but there Ik is a LOT of questions and it’s likely not as many Giants questions than avoiding Giants questions but again I’m not Mark
Fever Pitch Guy
If you’re not Mark then are you Tim, Steve or Connor?
tstats
Touché, no I’m TStats. One of the resident dodger fans here. I think we’ve met before?
Fever Pitch Guy
TStats, yes and I like you. It’s just the manner in which you kept saying you’re not Mark led me to believe you are one of the other chat hosts. Doesn’t hurt to ask, right? LOL
tstats
Hahahah fair enough I’ll work on my precision. I just didn’t want OP to assume I’m a writer so maybe I should’ve said I’m not a writer…
giantsphan12
I think you’re right tstats. My brethren are lame though. There’s always a zillion Bombers, Mets, Phillies, WSox, BoSox etc. but so few Giants questions. It’s fine, I’m just curious to see if Mark responds.
Mark Polishuk
It’s funny, I actually think I answer quite a few Giants-related questions, since there have been lots of people wondering what the next step will be for the team — who they’ll sign, who they’ll extend, who their next hidden-gem acquisition will be, etc.
giantsphan12
Thanks for your response Mark. I guess my perception that the Giants are underrepresented in the chats may be due to my insatiable curiosity about this particular team and the rabbits they keep pulling out of their caps! Thanks again for the chats you host. I do truly enjoy them! May the playoffs give us all ALOT to chat about!!
Cardsfanatik redux
I saw a question about trying to buy Carlson with Bart. Bart wouldn’t get you Carlson, and the Cardinal’s already have a good catcher in the minors.
Noel1982
Nothing can ever replace the days where Phillies fans thought Cole Hamels should get them mike trout while anglers fans thought Peter Bourjos should get them Cole hamels ! Crazy they. Never found no middle ground lol
Halo11Fan
Angel fans never thought Bourjos would get them Hammels. If you have to be untruthful to make a point, why should anyone care about your point?
giantsphan12
@cardsfan, I imagine Mo & Co won’t be letting Carlson go anywhere. See you guys on Friday in the NLDS 🙂
Cardsfanatik redux
I hope they get past the Dodgers. I’m pretty confident. But it is Scherzer. I think Wainwright will be Wainwright, but the offense has to get him more than one or two runs.
Fever Pitch Guy
I really don’t like the idea of trading draft picks. MLB made the no-trade rule to protect teams from foolishly mortgaging their future for players that never live up to expectations. When you’re a bad team, using a high pick to draft a talented player and keep them for at least six years in the majors is a proven way to attract and keep fans.
Allowing the trading of draft picks is like bringing your ATM card to a casino, too tempting and very risky.
DarkSide830
and what’s the real need? just trade your 1st rounder from last year if you wanna trade “picks”
tstats
Preller would be hella ballsy with it
iverbure
I don’t understand this narrative that teams have to keep players for more than 6 years to attract fans. Fans are attracted to winning. If you win and are competitive for several years in a row you attract a bunch of new fans because it’s the place to be. Trying to constantly appeal to those kinda of people is foolish.
Fever Pitch Guy
Familiarity with the players is what attracts fans. When you watch a player come up from the farm system after following them in the minors, and you get familiar with them on and off the field, and they become a favorite of yours, and you buy their jersey, they become the main reason you watch and attend the games.
You think fans are mainly attracted to winning? Seriously?
For decades prior to 2004 fans filled parks like Wrigley Field and Fenway despite their teams not winning since forever.
And on the flip side, you’ve got teams like Tampa that win all the time but hardly anybody attends or watches the games. You know why? Because every time they have a really good player, that player gets traded.
Fans do not like following teams full of players that they don’t know. That would be like rooting for laundry, rooting for just the uniforms.

I would think Beane would LOVE Fisher and Co. to open the pocketbook. Fisher is a business guy-first, baseball enthusiast-second owner. It’s too bad for the A’s and their fan base. I hope they stay in Oakland!!
skip 2
You’re exactly right! Fisher is a scum bag!
zacharydmanprin
When the A’s have spent money they have failed.
Jean Matrac
zacharydmanprin:
How about citing some examples of the A’s spending money and failing?
I’m not an A’s fan, but living in CA, I ‘m aware of the A’s and their spending, and they have not, in the last couple of decades, spent money.
And failing is a relative term. I’d rather be an A’s fan, and at least see them competitive until they fall short, than be a fan of a team like the Orioles, or Pirates, that are out of the race by May.

The Phillies are again heading nowhere. 10 straight years of no post season baseball
angelsfan4life
Why haven’t people figured out, don’t trade for pitchers from Tampa Bay. Marquez and Price, are probably the only two, that didn’t turn into a below average pitcher as soon as they got traded.
Noel1982
Twins got what they wanted out of Jake for a couple years it wasn’t much but all they gave up was a guy rays discarded after four months !
Fever Pitch Guy
Yeah the Rays front office is great, but they make mistakes like every other team. The Renfroe trade immediately comes to mind.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@fever. Yes the Rays gave up a very good player in Cronenworth to get Renfroe who played for the Rays one year then left via free agency.
Fever Pitch Guy
Fred, Renfroe was horrible that one season (2020) and the Rays decided to designate him for assignment, thus allowing him to become a free agent. That’s why he’s arbitration eligible this winter and next winter, Sox own his rights thru 2023.
Jack Marshall
Its’ weirder not to have the American Capitol’s team not in the American League than not to have the NATIONALS in the NATIONAL League?
Tony Carbone
Dipoto hasn’t spoken to Seager in years?
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@tony. Apparently no contact between them for about 4 years. I imagine Mariners will do the 2 million buyout on Kyle and he’ll move on elsewhere. By all accountants he’s been a terrific teammate. Some team will sign him as a bench/platoon player.
