The Mets’ search for a new president of baseball operations will lead to a chat with Theo Epstein, as MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link) that the Mets are planning to get in touch with Epstein “soon.” Athletics executive VP Billy Beane and Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns are also on the Mets’ wishlist, as Heyman notes that New York intends to ask the A’s and Brewers for permission to speak with the two executives once Oakland’s season is over, and once Milwaukee’s postseason run is complete.
This isn’t the first time that these three names have been linked to the Mets’ search, and it remains to be seen how serious any of the trio are as candidates — Heyman tweeted just yesterday that Epstein and Stearns were “seen as unlikely gets.” The pursuits of Beane and Stearns could be ended quickly, of course, if their current teams simply denied the Mets permission for a meeting. While teams generally allow employees to interview for higher positions with other teams, Beane and Stearns are already atop their respective clubs’ decision-making pyramid.
As of Wednesday, New York hadn’t yet spoken to any candidates, team president Sandy Alderson told The Athletic’s Tim Britton (Twitter thread) and other reporters. This could make Epstein the first name on the Mets’ list overall, and it would make sense that the team would check in with an unaffiliated potential candidate before tackling the thornier issue of permission from other clubs.
Alderson also noted the interesting detail that the Mets will make a decision on the fate of manager Luis Rojas and the current coaching staff soon after the season is over, even prior to the hiring of a new PoBO. “I would hope those decisions are made with a new leadership potentially in mind, to make sure they have as much flexibility as possible,” Alderson said, which wouldn’t seem to bode well for Rojas’ chances of being retained. The wait should be longer in deciding on the future of acting GM Zack Scott, whose next court date related to a DWI charge isn’t until October 7. Alderson said the Mets will decide on Scott after there has been some resolution in his legal situation.

Dear Sandy,
Please take Beane!
Sincerely,
A’s fan
davidk1979
Strange comment Billy’s been amazing in Oakland and only hasn’t won a ring due to the awful owner.
Orel Saxhiser
Every team has fans like that.
James1955
Billy Beane said that money ball does not work in the playoffs.
iverbure
Playoffs are a crapshoot.
DarkSide830
A’s must be REALLY unlucky then.
Fever Pitch Guy
Billy is right, Moneyball doesn’t work in the postseason where fundamentals like solid defense and smart baserunning help win ballgames.
And Moneyball works better when you have three of the best starting pitchers in the game and juiced up sluggers.
Cosmo2
How does baserunning and defense help MORE in the playoffs? Explain this logically.
Cosmo2
When has Beane ever said that? I’m calling BS.
Cosmo2
A’s unlucky? 90’s Braves are terrible too then? The 90’s Bills? No such thing as a consistently great regular season team but suddenly a different talent level in the playoffs. You’re all correlation and zero causation.
Fever Pitch Guy
Cosmo the answer is simple. In the postseason the margin for error is much smaller, because the competition is much better. You can’t recover from defensive and baserunning errors as easily in the postseason, they are magnified and quite often directly lead to losses.
JoeBrady
Fever Pitch Guy
Cosmo the answer is simple. In the postseason the margin for error
====================================
There are actually two rules for this.
1-Regular season BB is about having 5 #3 SPs or better, with a decent offense. If you are #4 in offense, and #7 in pitching, you’ll win a lot of games.
2-Playoffs are about having three #1/2 type SPs. The #4 SP will pitch one game in a 7-game series, and the #5 might not be on the roster.
In 2013, we weren’t much better than the other playoff teams in the regular season. We went 11-5 in the playoffs because Lester, Lackey & Buchholz started 13-16 games, with Peavy starting 3, and Doubront starting -0-. If Team A and Team B both win 95 games in the regular season, but team B’s #4 & #5 are much better than Team A’s #4 and #5, then by default, Team A becomes the playoff favorite.
And, since small market teams can seldom afford many #1/2 types, they become susceptible in the playoffs. But that said, playoffs are still crap shoots. As good as LAD are this year, they still need to win 4 series. The 1927 Yankees would be an underdog to win 4 series.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Moneyball was just a motive to get the best out of a low payroll. It has easily evolved since 2002.
Cosmo2
Fever: Fair enough. I still disagree, but that’s at least a plausible hypothesis.
Fever Pitch Guy
In 2013 the two COATS helped the Red Sox in the postseason big time, Ortiz and Lester.
But Billy says there’s no such thing as clutch. If he thought differently, he probably wouldn’t have the longest drought in the league right now.
Getting back to fundamentals such as fielding and baserunning, from the same Atlantic article:
Let’s review. From 2000-2003, the A’s lost in the first round of the playoffs, the American League Division Series, each year. Their collective record for those four series was 8-12. Even more stunning, given their success during the regular season, the A’s were an eye-popping 0-9 in potential clinchers—games that would have won the series and sent them on to the next round of playoffs.
Some of their errors and miscues are among the most famous in 21st century major league baseball. In 2000, the A’s won 91 games over the season to the Yankees’ 87 but lost in the final game of the ALDS when Terrence Long, not known for his defensive skills, misplayed a long fly ball in the first inning, allowing the Yankees to clear the bases and blow the game open.
The next season, the A’s once again outplayed the far richer eastern devils, winning 102 games to the Yanks’ 95. One of the key plays in the series came in game three when Derek Jeter streaked all the way across the field to snag a weak throw down the first base line and flip it to Jorge Posada, who tagged an unbelievably lazy Jeremy Giambi, who had forgotten to slide. In game five, the A’s led 2-0 in the bottom of the second when three Oakland errors led to two unearned runs that were the difference in the 5-3 win; one of the errors was by Jason Giambi at first base. Giambi was probably one of the worst fielding first basemen in baseball; the only reason he was playing the position that day was because he couldn’t play DH because his brother, the even worse fielding Jeremy, was in that slot.
In 2002, the A’s faced the equally small market Minnesota Twins in the ALDS. Oakland was easily the better team, winning 103 games to the Twins’ 94. But in game four, the A’s fielding unraveled with two errors leading to five unearned runs in an ugly defeat. One error was committed by the normally sure-handed Miguel Tejada, but the other was by the usually unsurehanded Scott Hattesberg who was in the lineup because Beane loved his ability to get on base, not for his fielding skills. (As Lewis puts it, infield coach Ron Washington “was the one coach in baseball who could be certain that his general manager wouldn’t be wasting any money on fielding ability.”)
The next season the A’s won three more games (96-93) than the big market Boston Red Sox. But in game three, perhaps the worst in Beane’s career, they committed four errors, capped off by Tejada and Eric Byrnes taking the team out of scoring opportunities with bone-headed base running. (Base running is low on Beane’s list of priorities.)
Fever Pitch Guy
Thanks Cosmo. When it comes right down to it, the postseason is an entirely different bird than the regular season. In the postseason your opponents are the best teams, and their best players are getting the vast majority of the playing time.
There’s no #5 starting pitchers, most of the starts are done by #1-2-3 pitchers.
There’s no relievers with ERA’s over 5 pitching mop-up duty.
The bullpens not only have quality relievers, they also include very good starting pitchers pitching additional innings.
Games are typically much closer, often won by the slimmest of margins, which makes defensive and baserunning blunders much more costly.
This is honestly why I’m so nervous about my team, it’s probably the worst defensive Red Sox team of all the prior ones to qualify for the postseason.
Grey matter
@cosmo
Bosox are on both ends…..Dave Roberts circling the bases and Buckner.
AnonymousRedCow
Posada didn’t make the tag… Giambi should have skid, but Posada missed the tag
Fever Pitch Guy
What’s Billy’s excuse for 1993-2004 when they never won an LCS game under Haas, Schott & Hofmann?
In fact, Billy’s team has gone the longest in the AL without winning an LCS game.
In fact, the only MLB team to have gone longer without an LCS game win is the Reds.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Twins? They’ve made it more times than the Reds have.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Does this mean the A’s owner might flick his Beane to the Mets?
gcg27
With them limiting him and payroll restraints you should thank god you have had Beane so u can still enjoy competitive baseball
gcg27
If they would have let him keep players he wanted they would have won division
zacharydmanprin
The A’s haven’t won a WS due circumstances beyond “an awful owner”. Beane has made terrible decisions when spending money. Suggesting the A’s don’t care about baserunning or defense is laughable especially when the A’s have been one of the better defensive teams in the last 20 years. FPG makes about as much sense as your average QANON conspiracy theorist.
Fever Pitch Guy
Zach I get that you’re probably just a casual fan who doesn’t really follow baseball, and that’s cool.
But if you scroll up and see what I already posted about Beane’s refusal to value defense and fundamentals like baserunning, then you’ll probably wish you could take back that comment.
baseballpun
Did Theo say that he preferred to take over an expansion team (a new challenge) or was that just media conjecture?
pt57
Never heard that, but he’ll be waiting a ling time for an expansion team.
StupendousYappi
Billy Beane cant even stand to watch a game how is he going to handle the pressure of NYC and these idiotic mets fans? Can’t see it working at all.
Weasel 2
Jerry West couldn’t watch Lakers games, but they did fine with him as GM
alc47
Why are you calling Mets fans idiotic ? The one bozo on this website doesn’t stand for all the Mets fans smh
davidk1979
Team Beane
Vizionaire
all three will say no.
Orel Saxhiser
I think you’re right. And it will tell us a lot about the Mets situation.
Buckner
I feel this may be correct as well. They’re not even trying. They could have spoken with Epstein weeks ago.
I’m gonna predict Alderson may wind up being POBO and his son may wind up being GM. Bryn Alderson was promoted this summer to be an ass’t GM.
kahnkobra
Wrong
Tatsumaki
Agreed. Why go to a tire fire like mets when you have done well with respective teams
YankeesBleacherCreature
Because people want new challenges similar to when Epstein left the Red Sox to help the Cubs win a WS.
Yankee Clipper
The biggest problem is that the Mets administrative culture is poisoned, and was from the beginning with their first hire; yet they hope someone from the outside can come in and work magic. It starts at the top. Everyone thought Cohen was going to throw billions around like candy on Halloween, but he’s proven to be a middling (and meddling) owner. There’s a proven formula to develop winning cultures, and there is no shortcut.
Teams are failing because they’re trying to be a blend of the Rays and big-market ball clubs, and it doesn’t work. Additionally, weak management in the dugout that are too reliant on analytics doesn’t help.
johns-11
Who wouldn’t want a $200M budget. LOL
baseballpun
Kind of a requirement for Theo.
DarkSide830
[Jason Heyward will be available in due time]
Yankee Clipper
Money means nothing when you can’t spend it on the people you want…. And the culture means a lot to those looking in from the outside. Why go into that culture when you’re satisfied with the one in which you currently work? Someone will try it, but they’re going to be a fall guy for the next Mets’ losing season.
Mr_KLC
Milwaukee is a great place to be in the sports world right now. No way that I would even consider leaving that job if I was Stearns.
afsooner02
Sterns will laugh his ass off at the Mets. He knows a dumpster fire when he sees one. Built the brewers for long term success. Why leave in the middle of that?
fisher40
Stearns knows better not to go to a dumpster fire organization like the Mets with their idiotic fan base and the media who really controls the team along with their clueless owner. Stearns won’t go anywhere
Jean Matrac
I doubt it will even come down to Stearns saying no. I don’t think the Brewers will give the Mets permission to talk to him. They denied the Mets last year, and they also denied the Giants when Stearns was still a GM.
LordD99
There’s always a price. Will Cohen pay it?
Orel Saxhiser
The bigger question for me: Will Cohen be willing to step out of the spotlight and not make everything about him?
Buckner
Sadly, probably not.
JoeBrady
Well-phrased. It isn’t enough to be a really good GM. When you come in for the interview, you need a long-term plan. If that long-term plan involves tanking next year, will the owner agree to it? And, if they agree to tanking, will they follow along?
The issue is that some owners buy baseball teams because they think they are smart enough to run the team. Guys like Dolan in Cleveland simply allow their front office to make all the decisions. Guys like Jerry Jones in Dallas, got rid of Jimmy Johnson because he couldn’t share the credit. Said that the team was so good that anyone could win a SB with it. It’s been 25 years since they’ve seen the SB.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Would mets fans tolerate a torch it all & start over type rebuild? Genuinely curious.
Buckner
They should.
But they won’t.
VonPurpleHayes
No. They wouldn’t. Also to be fair, the Mets have too much talent for a complete rebuild. Their in the same boat as the Phillies in that regard. They need to retool, not torch it.
VonPurpleHayes
*They’re
YourDreamGM
No. They have the richest owner in baseball. All other teams are jealous. They should spend huge money and be the world series favorite every year.
dodger1958
The Dodgers owners collectively are multi billionaires. No one will outspend them if the team is satisfied that they have the best 25 man roster possible. And Cohen is no fool. He doesn’t even own the team tv broadcast channel, Wilpon does. And the the estimated Annual Value of the Dodgers local tv deal is in excess of 325 million. Not to mention they own their own stadium. Cohen didn’t become AQ billionaire by pissing away money just to spend it.
Jean Matrac
YourDreamGM:
Was that post sarcasm? If not:
There are other team owners that are also multi-billionaires. The Giants have an ownership group, and one of them is worth $5.4B. With the Giants, Dodgers, and other team owners worth billions in wealth, like Middleton and Henry, Cohen being worth the most is irrelevant.
Maybe the Pirates are jealous, but others are not. If you think the Mets will have the luxury of picking and choosing among the top FAs, because of Cohen’s wealth, you’d be wrong.
YourDreamGM
That post is how a lot of Mets fans I know feel. I doubt the Pirates owner is jealous. He is a billionaire. He simply chooses to field under 50 million payrolls.
Rsox
I don’t see the Mets getting any of the three.
The Mets add nothing to Theo’s mystique and have no farm system for him to deplete.
Beane is probably going to die in Oakland and be buried under First Base in honor of Scott Hatteberg.
The Brewers are in the middle of the most successful stretch in team history and are legitimate World Series contenders. I can’t see Stearns wanting to leave while their window of opportunity is wide open
JerryBird
PutPeteinthehall
I see Theo getting the job and depleting the farm system trying to win now. Bad signings will be his undoing and nothing more than a division title will happen with him at the helm. BTW a bad manager hiring will be part of this.
alproof
Get rid of Alderson; sign Theo.
DarkSide830
so thet have to go begging to get dudes now? cmon Mets, stop.
DarkSide830
*they
YankeesBleacherCreature
Troll comment but I’ll bite. If you want the best, there are hurdles to get pass. Every team in baseball needs to get permission to interview other teams’ employees to fill a lateral vacancy.
DarkSide830
it’s a matter of having to ask. they can’t find the right guy to hire as a promotion so they are forced to try and pry dudes away from other teams in lateral moves.
wallabeechamp
The (LOL)Mets would be lucky to get Josh Burnes. He’ll probably be smart & stay in his position as LAD farm director until he gets another crack at the Padres job. Jeff Lunhow is available & off the ineligible list…
No serious baseball exec would consider taking over that raging tire fire.
DonOsbourne
Jeff Luhnow makes a lot of sense here. He needs a landing spot and he’s more qualified than anyone else the Mets are likely to get. He’s maybe shady, but, hey, it’s the Mets.
Yankee Clipper
And, maybe he hires Carlos Beltran for a reunion!
desertbull
Theo will tear it down and rebuild and win a ring within 5 years
padam
Doubt the Brewers give permission regarding Stearns but I do see Beane taking a meeting (but perhaps more out of curiosity) and Theo possibly giving it some serious consideration. The $$$ Cohen can pay someone and the aura of leading the team is something to be considered.
The Mets have certainly disappointed, however with the right moves they could get to the show sooner than folks believe.
dmarcus15
Maybe Girsch from STL he could step out of MOs shadow.
Louholtz22
David Sterns is only 36 years old. Brian Cashman is 54. Maybe he waits for that job. He grew up in Manhattan. Theo could turn 3 franchises around. The Mets have a decent squad and are not far away. Easy spin with smart moves.
Yankee Clipper
If the Yankees bomb over the next two games he may not have to wait long!
Louholtz22
Cashman made a nice move bringing Rizzo in. The Yankees were on the outside looking in a month ago. Need Cole to step up in the wild card game. Just gotta play smart against the Rays. Rizzo is smart and that wears off on guys.
bobtillman
I hear Rudy Guiliianni (sp) is available to add his expertise.
Louholtz22
One other thing with Cashman. The internal players have been key: Judge, Torres, Sanchez, Loaisiga, Green, Gardner (still can be clutch). Every team brings in outside guys. The jury is out on Boone, not Cashman. Rizzo and his ability to make smart plays, could be the difference.
coachrsj
Beane owns a part of the club and Theo wants a part ownership also. Hard to get rid of a person who owns part of the club
joefriday1948
Thank goodness the Colorado Rockies are not allowed to conduct a search.
dlaurenzi
The Brewers will never give them permission to talk to Stearnes. Hilarious for them to think so
whyhayzee
Funny. All the Mets are saying is that they want a top flight commander to steer the ship. Who wouldn’t? The best I’ve seen in the 60 seasons of following them is Frank Cashen, and even he wore out his welcome. Some of the others were decent but flawed in one way or another. Obviously, Theo has done legendary things in two championship starved cities. Who wouldn’t tap on his door? Beane and Stearns come with great backgrounds but no WC yet. So come to New York. How much do we love Mark Messier? Willis Reed? Bring us a WC and we’ll love you unconditionally. Oh, if that were only true. Eli Manning? Fans complained about him. So it’s not a given that you win, you’re in.
So all that means it’s complicated. But you have to knock on the doors of the best in the business. Or you’re not doing your job.
As far as the nonsense about what the Mets organization is like on the inside? Pssh. None of us knows that.
Jean Matrac
Hard to see why Stearns is considered a possibility. The Brewers denied permission for the Giants to talk to him when he was still a GM. They promoted him afterward to PoBO. And, if I’m not mistaken, they previously denied permission to the Mets more recently as well.
LarryJ4
All this is just typical Mets pipe dreams! It’s who they want, but with the lack of talent on the farm, injury prone starters, NY media, and really a lack luster lineup, no one with resumes of these guys will touch the job! Maybe they can try again and hire Scott Boras as their president and gm lol!
Bob333
Neither Beane or Epstein will come to the Mets they want final say and an owner who does not get into their business. This kook Cohen can’t stay off twiiter. The will go with like Alderson’s son or some other butt kiss GM.Mets will do nothing ever with this new owner he
is a Jerry Jones clone.
Bob333
Joe Biden would be pefect for NY he is a loser and has no clue and DiBlasio would have front row seats.
detroitdave84
Trump was the perfect loser but they kicked him out NY. Such a dumb ass comment.
Bob333
He is still in NY you communist, liberal Jack Ass
detroitdave84
I remember speaking with some Mets fans in April and they told me that this year was just going to be “off the charts phenomenal”. Well, it wasn’t and the chaos will continue until there is stability in the front office. Theo Epstein knows how to build a winner and I have begging for Al Avila to be replace by him. However, the 6 years of tanking has finally paid off for the Tigers. They finished over .500 in 4 months and will finally not be drafting in the top 10 since 2015! Tigers finished with the same record as you guys but your season was considered a failure and our season, a huge improvement. Get Theo Epstein! The Mets have the talent and need some luck with injuries. Billy Beane wouldn’t know how to spend the money because he never had to do it. I don’t think he is cut out for the NY atmosphere. Theo Epstein worked in Boston and Chicago so he can handle New York.
Fever Pitch Guy
Three years after Epstein became GM of the Red Sox, he couldn’t handle it and resigned while wearing a gorilla suit.
Does he know how to build a winner? Sure, with a very large checkbook.
Bob333
As long as Cohen owns that team no respectable person will take the GM or Mgr job because he is hands on..Remember Epstein is part owner and so is Beane. That loser owner will not give them anypart of the Mets beside he can’t they would have to sell their current shares so Good Luck.
