The Marlins have outrighted infielders Eddy Alvarez and Deven Marrero and right-handers Preston Guilmet and Andrew Bellatti off their 40-man roster, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. The Fish now have 36 players on the 40-man roster, but with seven players on the 60-day injured list, they’ll still need to clear three more spots to reinstate all of their injured players between now and the conclusion of the postseason. All four players will be eligible for minor league free agency.
Of the two infielders, Alvarez saw significantly more action in 2021, compiling a .188/.297/.328 line across 74 plate appearances. He also made a few headlines in both 2020 and 2021: first when he became the first Winter Olympic medalist to appear in a Major League Game (he won a silver medal in speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Games), then again when he became the third American to medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympics (he was a member of the silver-winning USA baseball squad in this summer’s Tokyo Games).
Marrero, a first-round pick of the Red Sox in 2012, put together a similar .188/.316/.375 line across just 19 PAs. He’s seen big-league action in six seasons (three with Boston, one with Arizona, and two with Miami) but has never managed to put together an extended run of production. Across a career-high 188 PAs for the BoSox in 2017, he managed only a meager .211/.259/.333 triple-slash. He hasn’t managed much more in the minors (he has a .623 OPS across 490 games in Triple-A) but remains a plus defender and could get a chance to catch on elsewhere.
Like Marrero, neither Guilmet nor Bellatti saw much time on the field for the Marlins. Guilmet covered only two innings (4.50 ERA) in two appearances, while Bellatti was roughed up (13.50 ERA) in a tiny sample of 3 1/3 IP in three trips to the mound. Guilmet’s track record is much longer, appearing with seven clubs across five big-league seasons, but he’s never seen more innings than the 10 1/3 he covered for Baltimore in 2014.
Bellatti’s brief run in 2021 was his first in the bigs since he posted a strong 2.31 ERA (albeit with a 5.23 FIP) across 23 1/3 innings for the Rays in 2015 before injuries derailed his career. He was out of baseball entirely in 2017 and ’18 before latching on with the Yankees Double-A affiliate in 2019 (after a single outing with the Atlantic League’s Sugar Land Skeeters) and ultimately getting the call from the Marlins this year.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Are any of these guys any good? This seems like a basic move just to keep good players and cut the fat off the roster. It’s amazing how many players the Marlins have on their 40-man that most people have never heard of. The Marlins would be wise to try and offer several very good pitching prospects to the Giants for Joey Bart. They need Bart way more than the Giants do and they might have the young pitching depth to pull a trade like that off. They would definitely have to be good pitchers though. One would probably have to be Sixto Sanchez and he alone probably wouldn’t even come close.
Giants74
Posey is to old for them to trade Bart. Patrick is not close enough to the bigs.
Big Smoke
Chill, Bart isn’t the second coming of Christ. If Sixto alone can’t get it done then it’s not worth trading for him
The Mets "Missed WAR"
@elgrandoamokio: Sixto looks seriously injury prone. Great stuff but there is a serious question as to whether or not he will ever even be able to materialize as a major league pitcher. The Marlins seriously need a catcher and have ever since they traded Realmuto. Bart would be a major league starting catcher with almost every team. Most people that don’t want that deal done prefer to keep Bart over Sixto and more. Not only wil Sixto not get it done alone but the Giants might not even be interested in him as a centerpiece for Bart. Sixto still has potential value but it would be very unwise for any team (including the Marlins) to look at Sixto as even close to a sure thing. There are no “sure thing” prospects in baseball but Joey Bart is far closer to that than seriously injury prone Sixto Sanchez is. If I’m the Marlins I jump at that deal. The only question is would the Giants pull the trigger? Probably not because Sixto will likely never be worth it with all the time he is likely to spend on the IL.

@TheMuts”missedwar”
Is Sixto injury prone like Degrom or or an extreme example like Thor “injure prone” ?
Mets fan clearly have the most extensive experience on this matter.
mister guy
bart is a tough sell right now – ;posey isn’t even a sure thing right now as his comments after the nlds left it open to him possibly retiring after this year rather than playing his option year. behind him is just bart to step in as casali is a FA and genoves is probably another year away as he just hit AAA.
Mjm117
Marlins would need to pay off the rest of Posey contract, as well as, give up one of Alcantara, Pablo, or Rogers AND maybe even have to throw – in a Bleday for good measure ON TOP of sending over Sixto for automatic future HOF catcher that is Joey Bart.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
That’s a bit extreme but that’s a glorified version of the jist I was trying to tell @elgrandosmokio when he said “if Sixto alone can’t get it done than it’s not worth trading for him.” I’m not going to call any minor league player a future hall of famer and if there is a catcher out there it’s Adley Rustchman. That being said: the difference in value between Sixto and Bart is mammoth.
@mjm117: I am not a Mets fan but my guess is Sixto is in the same injury prone class as Steven Strasburg. Even if Strasburg retires today I would be surprised if Sixto matches his career stats. I think he may have a couple of great seasons in his career. Maybe even have some really good injury shortened seasons. I personally don’t believe that Sixto Sanchez will ever be healthy long enough to win anywhere near 200 games or be considered a great overall long term pitcher once you consider all the games he’s likely to miss. My guess is his injury woes will force him into a permanent bullpen role sooner than most of us think.

Several pitching pieces? uhhhh you get one piece dude. Marlins aren’t gonna just give you Sixto as a throw in just because. Marlins offer Max straight up if anything and that’s it. As far as prospects who don’t pan out, catchers fail more than any other position, as evident by the lack of quality at the major league level. Bart isn’t even a top 5 prospect at his own position so put the pipe down. If this was Ruiz or Adley I can see a 2-1 swap for sure, but Joey Bart? Pfft. Marlins didn’t even get two top guys for the best catcher in baseball.

Is he good? I’ve never heard of him. It does always suck when you love a player and gets released or traded. Joc Pederson has helped the Braves a lot in their push this season but I’m not so sure trading the entire career of Bryce Ball was worth it just to get a few months of Joc Pederson.
DarkSide830
Ball’s probably nothing special as a prospect, tbh
Prospectnvstr
Pederson had several key at bats, both in the reg season & the postseason, for the Braves. His 9 rbi’s AND his 1.114 ops in 23 AB’s in the postseason are VERY RELEVANT currently. Will Bryce Ball lead his future team to the playoffs? Who knows but I for one am glad that the Braves (front office) made the deals that they did this year. Even if they fall short in winning the World Series, they made it very entertaining season for the fans. This is especially true when you take in account the injuries and the Marcel Ozuna situation.

No. Was a waste of a 1st round pick back in ‘012. Remember when Sox took Marrero, he was ranked pretty high and a reason he fell.. metal bat, no power, slap hitter and struck out..
He got a typical, boras fueled overslot deal somehow back then, hit ok at low A and was useless from then on. How he still gets callups is beyond me. Sure he’s always been fair with the glove in the middle IF, but any AAA hitter is better.

What? He sucks

Guilmet is the best of the bunch. A 4A/Japan reliever who could be great for a bad bullpen like the Detroit Tigers and even pick up saves.

I would have thought Brinson would be on this list….if he’s still on this team next year then I give up.
