The Phillies remained in playoff contention until the final week of the season but ultimately came up short, missing the postseason for the tenth consecutive year. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski conducted his end-of-season press conference this afternoon (video provided by 97.3 FM ESPN) and offered some insight into the front office’s plans for returning to contention next year.
Dombrowski suggested the team was prioritizing lineup help, pointing to their need to complement Bryce Harper in the middle of the order and for more production from the leadoff spot. (Phillies leadoff hitters had a .236/.302/.404 cumulative slash line that ranked third-worst in the league by measure of wRC+). One potential position at which the Phils could look to upgrade is shortstop, where incumbent Didi Gregorius struggled to a .209/.270/.370 line over 408 plate appearances.
When asked whether Gregorius would return as the club’s top shortstop option, Dombrowski was noncommittal. “It very well could be him. But he knows, we’ve had a discussion with him that he needs to be better. And we’re in a position where we also are going to be open-minded to what’s going to take place at shortstop next year. It could be internal, could be him if he comes back. …. Maybe it is him. He’ll come in (next season) in shape, but he’s not guaranteed — and he’s been told — that he’s for sure the shortstop. It doesn’t mean he can’t play other positions for us too, and maybe we’ll have a DH that’ll be a part of our club too.”
Gregorius is guaranteed $14.5MM next season under the terms of last winter’s two-year free agent deal. In addition to his offensive struggles, Gregorius rated as eleven runs below average by measure of Defensive Runs Saved. Dombrowski alluded to the 31-year-old’s issues with the glove, a microcosm of a team-wide issue for the Phils throughout the past few seasons.
Bryson Stott, the Phillies first-round pick out of UNLV in 2019, has spent the bulk of his minor league career at shortstop. The 24-year-old hit a solid .301/.368/.481 with ten home runs over 351 plate appearances at Double-A Reading, earning a late-season bump to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Dombrowski said Stott could factor into the shortstop mix next season, but it’s also easy to connect the Phils to the star-studded upcoming free agent class at the position.
Dombrowski suggested the Phillies didn’t feel adding a star player was inherently necessary, pointing to Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola as among the club’s impact players. That’s indeed an enviable core, but this offseason presents a unique opportunity to land a potential marquee shortstop. The Phillies have made big free agent splashes in each of the past three winters — signing Harper, Wheeler and Realmuto in succession. Those players have hefty contracts on the books through at least 2024, but the Philadelphia organization has long been one of the game’s biggest spenders.
In the estimation of Jason Martinez of Roster Resource, the Phillies already have north of $142MM in both actual payroll and luxury tax commitments on the books for next season. That’s before accounting for arbitration raises for Hoskins and Zach Eflin that’ll likely tack on another $12-15MM. The Phils entered the 2021 campaign with an estimated payroll just north of $191MM, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, although they did take on some additional salary midseason by acquiring Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy at the trade deadline.
It’s possible the Phils could invest heavily at the top of the shortstop market, although that’d leave them without much more breathing room to address other potential areas of need like center field, third base and the bullpen before approaching this year’s spending level. That’d be less of a concern were owner John Middleton is willing to sign off on further spending, though, and Dombrowski suggested Middleton had expressed openness to exceeding the luxury tax threshold this past trade deadline to accommodate a potential impact addition. Ultimately, the Phils did not surpass the CBT threshold, and next year’s tax threshold remains unknown, subject to the upcoming collective bargaining negotiations.
It remains to be seen in which specific direction the Phils will go, but Dombrowski’s long been known as one of the league’s most aggressive executives. There was never any expectation the club would have any interest in taking a step back, but Dombrowski’s presser only served to confirm the Phillies are again looking to address weak points on the roster and build around their high-end core.

The Mets "Missed WAR"
That Gregorius contract looked kind of dumb from the beginning. Especially as a multi-year deal. He is inconsistent offensively and he is just plain bad defensively. Who wants to pay a bad defensive player big money on a multi-year deal to play shortstop of all positions? Your shortstop should be one of the best defensive players on your team. Didn’t MLBTR rank Gregorius as the best free agent shortstop on the market lasts season because they loved his hitting so much? I haven’t gone back and checked to see how the other free agent shortstops have done but it seems like they were wrong on that prediction. They had Andrelton Simmons ranked 2nd though and he did terrible. Oh, I remember now. Did MLBTR actually have Gregorius ranked higher than Marcus Semien? Maybe Semien was first and Didi was 2nd. I know Semien played second base this season but he entered free agency as a shortstop. Can anyone tell me how the other free agent shortstops outside Gregorius, Semien and Simmons did? It seems like Gregorius ended up being ranked way too high but I’m not exactly sure who was available. He definitely wasn’t worth the $30ish million the Phillies paid to retain him.

Dave’s just gonna sell the farm and buy the fresh FAs… same recipe every time
VonPurpleHayes
That’s actually not true if you look at his entire body of work. It’s also obviously not going to be true with the Phillies because their farm is worthless.
JohhnyBets67
There’s enough to sell if you don’t care about completely depleting the system. Don’t put it past DD
WarkMohlers
There really is not enough to sell. DD at least makes sure the lower levels can field a team.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
I’d bring back McCutchen (Check out his numbers vs. LHP) and platoon him and Didi in LF. There’s an old adage in baseball that says, if you can play SS, you can play anywhere on the diamond. Haven’t checked, but I think, like most LH hitters, Didi’s numbers vs. RHP are superior to those vs. same side pitchers.
I’m letting Bohm play 3B full time. He’s hit everywhere he’s played, and was hitting over .300, albeit without the advertised pop, from June 1st onward. Which made it somewhat puzzling to me when they demoted him.
Whatever money Dombro has to spend should be spent on improving the bullpen, although I do like several names who are or might return (Neris, Coonrod and Brognan). A healthy Seranthony Dominguez would help immensely.
So, you ask, what about CF and SS if Didi ends up platooning in LF? First, I can live with a glove-first SS who isn’t a total wet noodle with the bat. Not gonna spend big cheese for Baez, Story or Seager. Instead I’d look for a SS who may be blocked within his organization. Gavin Lux comes to mind since i do not expect the Dodgers to let Seager walk. Edmundo Sosa of the Cardinals is another possibility if they remain committed to DeJong as SS. I like our own Bryson Stott, but he only got about 40 PAs at AAA, so I’m guessing that’s where he’ll start out in 2022.
CF? Am not enamored with Haseley, Odubel or Moniak. However, if they just leave Kingery alone and let him hit the way he did in college and in the minors (Flat line drive swing instead of that Launch Angle mantra), I think the guy could hit .280 with doubles power while playing a more than decent CF.
There you have it. A simple, and low cost, solution to our next parade up Broad Street.

False! Dombrowski built “loaded” and highly rated farm systems in Montreal and Miami when he worked with ownerships with tighter spending budgets and still won both places. The guys Dombrowski drafted in Montreal had the best record in baseball before the baseball strike (‘Dombrowski had moved on to Miami).
In Miami, Dombrowski built an expansion team from scratch to a World Series winner in record time.
Dombrowski’s situations in Detroit and Boston were driven by ownership mandates to pull out all the stops and win now no matter the financial costs, no matter the farms system costs..
deweybelongsinthehall
I love DD who did follow mandates but that includes FL. They won twice through key acquisitions and spending but he was forced to spend and trade down immediately after each win. Unfortunately, FL didn’t and still hasn’t supported baseball to the extent that high payroll teams can survive long term.
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski built 2 World Series Championships in Miami.
#1 from expansion team to WS Champions.
Then Waste Management/Blockbuster owner Huizenga ordered Dombrowski to strip the team, trade all veterans to lower payroll to the bone so he could sell the team for maximum profits.
The Trades and Drafts that Dombrowski made in that fire sale of the Marlins 1st World Series Championship…The players received in those deals and Dombrowski drafts became the foundation and large part of the Marlins 2nd World Series Championship team after Dombrowski had left for Detroit.
DadsInDaniaBeach
This is a new ownership group in SoFla..They have a really nice young core..Strong pitching and will be better next year..However, no fan base..
GarryHarris
Detroit had a piss poor farm when Dave Dombrowski arrived. DD built up the Tiger system while simultaneously building a contender. Player agents had a direct line to owner Mike Illich who was suckered into signing and overpaying overhyped free agents. Furthermore, Tiger manager Jim Leyland just didn’t give young players much of a chance.
Other than Yoan Moncado (doesn’t fit in BOS) and Michael Kopech (broke out this season), who did DD trade away and gut the great and fabulous BoSox system? Chris Sale was absolutely instrumental in the 2018 championship team and is still strong now.
Noel1982
If they sign Bryce Harpers best friend kris Bryant then didi will very likely be the starting short stop next season ! No matter how much one things they can afford Bryant , and a star shortstop in free agency no chance at all they spend for both ! Plus they need a couple pitchers
VonPurpleHayes
I just don’t even see the Phillies pursuing Bryant.
Noel1982
Bryce is gonna push for it no matter what he says ! The team I don’t see pursuing him is his current team the giants ! I see them letting him walk and pursing Marcus semien and Nick Castellanos !
VonPurpleHayes
Semien would solve many of the Phillies problems. They pursued him last offseason. Curious if they pursued him again. As for Bryce and Bryant, I think fans tend to make plenty of false assumptions about what Bryce wants.
Samuel
@ VonPurpleHayes;
Disagree…..
The last thing the Philias need to do is give out a large 3-5 year contract to a 31 year-old. They have enough large contracts on the books.
Phillies need to develop young/cheap players at the ML level. I watched Nick Maton play earlier in the year and he did well at SS and 2B. He’s 24 years old and the the fans are writing him off……
Same as the Braves fans wrote off Austin Riley for a year-and-a-half. They wanted Josh Donaldson resigned. Riley played a decent 3B in 2021 which slashing 303 / .367 / .531 / .898. Meanwhile Josh Donaldson slashed .247 / .352 / .475 / .827 while playing in only 135 games and being paid $21m. Now 35 years old with a broken body, the Twins owe Donaldson $57m over the next 3 years.
No, the Phillies do not need another high priced veteran over 30.
SportsFan0000
I wouldn’t overspend on free agents for Phillies. Get a Starter. Make some trades. Draft well etc…
DadsInDaniaBeach
Freddy has a pretty nice glove and his bat has improved a bit..might be a .250 hitter
bbcalmc
Pitching is what they need especially bullpen
seamaholic 2
Dump the whole pen except Alvarado and sign 7 new guys. Done. THAT’S now a pretty good team.
DarkSide830
they need a 3B or SS regardless, and then a SP5. rest is less important.
Phillls
So just how has signing or trading for new bullpen guys worked out the last 5 years? Name one who has actually helped.
13Morgs13
Alvarado SUCKS
iverbure
Signing a bunch of bullpen arms usually doesn’t ever work because most aren’t consistent. I can also tell you don’t really follow current baseball. You can’t have 8 non optional RP. Because teams need fresh arms daily with the way the pen is used. Need at least 4 guys you can send down to the minors.
VonPurpleHayes
The bullpen was taxed by the lack of SP depth once Eflin went down. It’s a trickle down effect. With Eflin back, Phillies have a solid 1-5, but they could use another backup arm. This will fix the pen. SS, CF and 3B are bigger priorities IMO.

Should also say Hoskins not guaranteed 1st base job
Phillls
Why?
Deleted User
Hoskins mashed this year. The only way he isn’t playing 1st base is if he is DHing.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
Kind of like another NL East team we all know and love, I don’t think the Phillies need to be taking on another giant contract right now, as enticing as the SS market is.
Could they be a fit for Simba? He obviously doesn’t address the offensive side of things, but also shouldn’t be too pricey & would greatly improve their infield defense.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Kirk, while I don’t disagree with you, there is a glut of short stops on the market and there might not be enough teams looking to fill that slot. The Phillies might find a bargain there..
Motown is My Town
Since they have ties to Dombrowski don’t be surprised to see Schertzer and Verlander ending up in Philly in 2022
stretch123
I could see it
SportsFan0000
Scherzer specifically requested to be traded to the West Coast, Dodgers will resign him.
Verlander is fair game to any smart team/GM.
Phillies?! Padres?! Giants?!,Tigers?!
DadsInDaniaBeach
while both would be good gets, the last thing this team needs is aging pitchers. I wouldn’t do it
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Gregorious is super streaky but also not that great overall.
GETBUCKETS
Sign chase utley, jimmy rollins, and ryan howard
bucketbrew35
I could see them going hard after one or more of Scherzer, Verlander or Correa. I could also see him trading for Buxton if they can swing it. I feel like he has been a target for them for quite a while.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Is Dombroski’s comment about Didi implying that wasn’t in shape this past season?
Y2KAK
Jean segura? People forget about him?
Deleted User
If he’s playing SS, Phillies have bigger issues.
WarkMohlers
They have to make room for Kingery somehow. I couldn’t say that out loud without laughing, so thankfully I could type it.
PhilsPhan221
I think Gregorius is gone and Eflin gets non-tendered and resigned on a minor league deal; he just gets hurt too much.
Phillls
Not going to non-tender Eflin and risk losing him to another team. Starting pitchers don’t grow on trees.
DadsInDaniaBeach
DiDi is not tradable and no way is Eflin non tendered
Rsox
There are more Shortstops available in free agency than there are SS jobs. So either Didi plays SS, learns another position, rides the bench, or DD eats his contract
SCB III
As a Phillies fan, it’s depressing to hear that one of their worst players (Gregorius) has a $14.5 million guaranteed contract for next year.
Samuel
The Phillies problems go back to the failed rebuild – which I wrote about here as it wasn’t happening, all the while the national media and posters here were raving about the perennial contender they would become. There weren’t 5 guys on the 2021 roster that came through their system and had any sort of impact. Harper was right to say that they need to develop young guys from within. But allow at least 3 years for that to happen.
I thought the Phils could take the ALE in 2021, because coming out of Spring Training it was obvious that it was an awful division. Like the Mets, their roster doesn’t fit. Harper and Segura had wonderful years. Realmuto was Realmuto and Nola was up some but mostly below average. Hoskins was an offensive power source while his D went from mediocre to almost passable. But the difference between the Phils and Mets was that the Mets coaching staff actually worked with Nimmo to make him an acceptable ML CF (which I never thought would happen), and did a nice job with the pitchers – especially the bullpen. A good pitching coach and his staff will bring a bullpen along during the season. The Phillies did well with Archie Bradley, and overpaid for Ian Kennedy. But all the others were terribly inconsistent. Law of averages says that at least a few of those bullpen guys should have had decent seasons.
In short, in 2021 the Phillies manager and coaching staff did an awful job working with their players. Fundamentals were lacking. In spurts they played well….but most MLB teams do. It was Dombrowski’s first year and his first with Girardi. The offseason should be interesting, but more than bringing in new players they need to fix that coaching staff.

Come back home to NYC Didi
mlbnyyfan
Does Philadelphia need a third basemen? Gio for DD? DD would be a decent SS until Volpe is ready
Rsox
Since it sounds like the Phillies plan to move Alec Bohm to LF that actually wouldn’t be a bad trade for the Phillies. They would likely have to either include another player or pay down some of Didi’s salary but that would actually solve two problems for the Yankees as well. Didi at SS with LeMahieu at 3B and Gleyber never playing the position again
koldjerky
I’d do that in a beset best as a Phillies fan especially if the Yankees eat the contract. They are similar offensively even if Gio is a little less. They don’t even need to use him as their starter.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@mlb No, dude. I disagree with you on roster construction a lot and this is another one of them. Gio is a cheap, plus defender at 3B. Why absorb Didi’s salary when you can just play Velasquez or a recently-released Jose Iglesias for the league min. There is no upside with Didi at his age. You can’t just move parts around without consideration for defense. Playing DJL anywhere but 2B makes him an average player.
Rsox
Except DJL will be playing either 1B or 3B next season. Only way he plays 2B is either the Yankees sell low on Gleyber and trade him or try him at 3B. Neither or those seem likely
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Rsox I don’t know about selling low on Gleyber. Maybe that’s his true value as the league had adjusted to him and he hasn’t in a few seasons.
billysbballz
That’s awful for Yankees. Gio has much more value than Didi!
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski is a very smart Pres of BOps who works all avenues of improvement:
trades, drafting, free agency etc.
I can see Dombrowski putting together a blockbuster deal involving Jean Segura and a few others for a Starter, Bullpen help and a young CF, perhaps a young 2B.
Bryson Stott will be given every opportunity to start at either SS or 2B.
Didi becomes a utility guy,
Phillies pick up a new, young 2B,
Money will be spread around on multiple mid tier guys not 200M-300M free agents.
Drafts and international signings will be revamped.
DakotaJoe
In 2020’s shortened season Gregorius may have been the Phillies best player. This season he may have been their worst position player. He was dreadful in the field and at the plate. There is zero chance the Phillies will spend any money at the SS position. They already owe Didi another $14.5M and Stott had a great season and did well at every level as the Phillies moved him through the system. He’ll play full time by 2023 and may see a lot of action next year as well if Didi doesn’t perform.
GarryHarris
PHI goes after both Seager brothers.
Bob333
Phils sign Bryant to play 3B or LF.Stott takes over at ss and Bohm plays either 3b or left.Hoskins is traded for some pitching along with DiDi.
Old York
With the use of shifts in our game, there is no point having a specific person for SS or 3B, etc. Dump the positions and use the shift to play defense. This is more logical and requires more versatile players than we currently have. Good thing, Ohtani shook things up.
prov356
Dear Mr. Dombrowski,
Please come back to Nashville and bring us an MLB team.
Sincerely,
Nashville Baseball Fans
Old York
But then the Braves & Yankees would lose fans.
prov356
Not my problem. I want an AL team here so I can go to Angels games again.
Old York
All the teams play each other so I’m pretty sure at some point you’d be going to said game, even if it was NL.
With that said, I hope at some point that they get rid of the divisions and have an even schedule for all teams. If the Rays play the Yankees 11 times in a season, so should all the other teams. Enough with the 19 games against your opponents and then the winner of each division goes to the playoffs when one division has two 100+ teams playing each other in the division series while an 88 win team is playing a division game and a 90 win team is out of the playoffs due to one game.
MLB is in such a mess and does not reward top teams to compete in their playoffs.
prov356
As I understand it, Interleague play rotates divisions each year. So the AL West, for example, only plays the NL East every third year. So that won’t do! Unless I’m wrong about how interleague play is scheduled.
Old York
So, you want it every year.
prov356
Uh, yeah. I’d like to go to an Angels game or two every year.
Old York
Move to Anaheim. You can go to every game by paying for season tickets. You can get season tickets as low as $656 all the way up to $17,220. That’s about $8 per game up to $213 per game.
prov356
I lived in Anaheim (Hills). Now I live in Nashville. Hence my desire for MLB to come here. See my original post.
Old York
And I said, move to Anaheim and you can get season tickets for 81 games instead of wishing that the MLB puts a team there.
Otherwise, get MLBTV and you’ll be able to watch most of the games.
prov356
Yeah, this has gotten off track from my original light hearted comment so cheers.
SportsFan0000
Go see the Angels when they play in Tampa or Atlanta a relatively short drive or flight.
KamKid
How about a budget gymnastics trade with Toronto? Randal Grichuk for DiDi? DiDi is paid more in the short term, Grichuk slightly more overall with 2 years left. Phillies could save $4-$5m for next year’s budget to go towards relief help. Would also let the Phillies decline the option on McCutcheon to put towards other roster upgrades. Jays get out of the bad money sooner and have too many right handed outfielders already to really see a platoon role for Grichuk. They have question marks on the infield if they lose Semien and could use a left handed bat. Other money or pieces could be thrown in to even it out somewhat.
Rsox
Who are you uprooting in Toronto to accommodate Didi? Bichette is a better SS and Biggio should be playing 2B if Semien leaves. There is no reason to believe Toronto won’t be pursuing Bryant or every other free agent available. Plus Grichuck was an MVP for Toronto playing and producing well at the plate while Springer missed half the season
KamKid
I don’t know. Nobody yet as they don’t have a starting 2B or 3B for next year. Maybe Biggio plays a little OF so he’s more in the role Dickerson played down the stretch. DiDi can back Bo up at SS and presumably if he can play SS could play the other infield positions too. It’s not like I want DiDi or anything, I’m just seeing this a bit like the Davis/Andrus trade. Bad contract for bad contract but players who probably fit the other team better than their own. He’d be an upgrade on entering the season with Joe Panik as the lefty utility player. Philadelphia is not a super cheap roster and might want the shorter term salary relief while Toronto’s roster is going to escalate in price beyond next year. One place they could free up some budget room for ’23 would be to move Grichuk and take back a bad contract that’s over with this year.
KamKid
Just hit me. I have an answer for who DiDi could uproot: Breyvic Valera. Toronto had a choice between Valera and Jake Lamb some nights down the stretch.
phillyballers
DiDi to 1st. Rhys to DH. Bohm to LF. Segura/Stott to SS or 2B. Bryant to 3B. Marte to CF. Anyone but who they currently have to the bullpen.
