The Mets will not be permitted to interview Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns for their comparable position, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman relays that Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio officially denied the request over the weekend, thus eliminating Stearns from the running for the job in New York.
Stearns has been with the Brewers over six years now, originally being hired as the general manager in September of 2015. He was signed to an extension and promoted to his current presidential position in January of 2019. It had been speculated by some that he might be a good fit for the Mets job on account of his Manhattan roots and because 2022 is the last year remaining on that extension. However, teams generally have to grant permission for other clubs to interview their front office employees, unless there’s a promotion involved. Since Stearns already possesses the president title being offered by the Mets, that’s not the case here. There was also a recent report that there is a vesting option in the contract for 2023, though that is unconfirmed and the conditions that would cause the option to vest are not known.
The Mets’ search will now continue with one more name off the list. The three most-cited names rumored to be in the running for the job over the past few months have been Stearns, Theo Epstein and Billy Beane, with the former two now both out of the running. The Mets could turn their attention to Beane, although it’s unclear if the Athletics’ executive vice-president is interested in the position, or if the club would allow him to be interviewed for it.

Makes sense.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
Teams actually don’t ever have to grant permission for other teams to interview anyone in their organization. Even if there is a promotion involved they can still refuse since that employee is under contract. They almost always do grant permission as long as there is a promotion on the table but it’s not required by any means.
Robrock30
The Mets originally had David Stearns in their Front Office and they let him go. LOL Mets
They could have, should have hired Chaim Bloom 3 years ago and he wanted the Job, but the Mets hired Brodie Van Wagenen instead and then rehired Sandy Alderson.
Chaim Bloom now has the Red Sox in the ALCS and he is looking very good bringing in K Hernandez, Kyle Schwarber and Hunter Renfroe beating his former Tampa Rays. Nice job Chaim Bloom.
JoeBrady
That was a franchise altering decision. Outside of having a pretty good idea of what a player is worth, what other attributes did BVW bring? Knowing exactly what to pay Lindor is kind of important, though the market probably carries more weight, but trying to evaluate what Kelenic is worth, or trying to predict what the team should look like 1-3-5-7 years from now, has little to do with salary. Trying to predict what guys like Hernandez & Renfroe will do as full-timers, or whether they are bounce-back candidates, has little to do with calculating their salaries.
Robrock30
I have been closely following the Mets since the mid 60’s and since Frank Cashen’s 80’s WS Championship era who was hired by Nelson Doubleday which degenerated into the Wilpon era, the Mets have been clueless.
They just cannot evaluate talent Players, development, and Front Office. They hire and sign the wrong guys most of the time and let the great ones go. LOL Mets
dlw0906
It’s sobering to look at the trajectory of those franchises the Mets beat en route to that 1986 WS win compared to the Mets, not to mention their division rival nemesis of that era, the Cardinals. All of those franchises have for the most part flourished while the Mets have floundered wirh the exception of a few seasons.
njbirdsfan
I love how the White Sox, Cubs, Mariners and Phillies have done little to nothing over decades (if not a century) and yet it’s only Lol Mets.
Oldman58
The fake attitude of the NY people of “hey we’re better than everyone” is laughable that now Mets fans think they’re being unfairly singled out. The Mets are stuck in the mud and it’s good to see
sacball
I really hope this is sarcasm…the last two fired GM’s alone deserve all of the ‘lol Mets’
Jean Matrac
WSox won a title 16 years ago, and were in the PS. Plus they’re a young team with reason to be hopeful for the future. The Phillies won it 13 years ago. The Cubs won it 5 years ago. All three have won the WS this century.
It’s been 35 years since the Mets won it. Plus the Mets have a high profile with vocal fans. Granted, the Mariners have yet to win a title, but their profile and fans are nowhere near that of the Mets. Hard to believe Mets fans are comparing themselves to the M’s, complaining that the Mets get criticized more.
Robrock30
White Sox (05) Cubs (16) & Phillies (08) have recently won WS
LOL Mets
Dorothy_Mantooth
And let’s face it, the Mets were extremely lucky to win the ‘86 World Series too. It took a wild pitch and a botched grounder to first base in Game 6 for the Mets to snatch a victory from sure defeat.
True2theorange&blue
Absolutely they do poorly at evaluating talent whether it’s FA or in house talent. If the Mets are interested it’s a good chance they are trash but if they aren’t that’s the guy you go after.
When it was a game.
A bit off topic but those cardinal teams defense was possibly best ever. Mcgee Coleman van slyke outfield. Where do you hit the ball? At Ozzie Smith or Tommy Herr who was a very good defender.
Samuel
Lumping “The Mets” as a single entity in their decision making is wrong. The apropos cliché here is: “Follow The Money”.
I too thought they should have hired Chaim Bloom, and wrote that here at the time. But one has to understand that situation…….
Bloom knew they needed to do some sort of a rebuild. He supposedly told the owners that during interviews. The owners were trying to keep the franchise, and knew the NYC fans had run out of patience with the Wilpon’s and would not take kindly to trading off name players for prospects. Brodie is a world class marketing guy, he recognized the situation for what it was and told the owners what they wanted to hear – under him, THE METS COULD WIN NOW. Some salaries had to be moved around and others taken on, but all in all he could stay within their financial restraints.
Of course the Mets didn’t win, and the Wilpon’s gave in and sold the franchise.
The Stephan Cohen regime came in and placated the fans by spending. Nice try. The big move was to take on salary from the Indians by trading for Lindor and Carrasco. Unfortunately, Mr. Cohen immediately got baptized to the cutthroat ways of MLB, as Lindor’s agents took advantage of the situation, stating that were he not signed by opening day, they they would put off negotiations until after the season. Cohen was in danger of losing the goodwill he had built up with the fans if Lindor became a rental. He was put in a corner and gave in, with Lindor’s agents getting an outrageous contract. Then Lindor had a bad season, and now the same Met fans that demanded Lindor be extended 7-8 months ago are upset that Cohen spent that money on a questionable player.
Mr. Cohen walked into a bad situation. Although meaning well he’s learned what new owners that throw money around – from George Steinbrenner to Ted Turner to John Henry to Artie Moreno to Ron Fowler / Peter Seidler – “It’s not about spending money, it’s about HOW you spend it”.
Mr. Cohen needs a veteran Baseball Ops guy – the only quality one available is Jeff Luhnow, but ……..
Mr. Cohen would do well to heed the words of former Cleveland Browns executive / head coach Paul Brown – “Those that listen to the fans…….will soon be sitting with them”.
Mike LaValliere
I enjoyed chapters 1 through 3.. Kind of drifted off during the middle sections. Finished strong with a Paul Brown quote. Decent effort, I guess.
Jean Matrac
That sounded like a defense of the team for hiring BVW. I remember head-scratching that was fairly universal when he was hired. Even the fans like me wondered what they were thinking. Hiring someone, who’s a non-baseball guy, despite being a “world class marketing guy” because he told them what they wanted to hear is about as damning of the franchise as you can get.. There’s no excuse for the hiring of an player agent, over someone that knows baseball, and how to build a team.
tidybowlman
Different ownership. It would have been great to have Steve Cohen a few years ago, but at least he’s here now.
I have a solution… just bring in smart people who aren’t rapey, interview them and pick one so we can get on with the off-season.
Lenny Dykstra can be in charge of doing background checks.
fisher40
Nobody ever accused the Mets franchise as being smart in the last 30 years lol They’re basically the NY Jets of baseball
tidybowlman
Well, they’ve had terrible owners for 30 years. People need to give Cohen a chance. It hasn’t even been a year yet.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
The Brewers giving Stearns the role of President of Baseball Ops was huge in helping prevent teams from poaching him.
He’s been nothing short of excellent for Milwaukee and I hope the Brewers can win a World Series during his tenure there.
Robertowannabe
Stern has been great. Hoping that the Bucs have the same luck with Cherington that the Brewers have had with Sterns. (No offense as competing teams. I do root for the Brew Crew when the Bucs get booted. The little guys have to stick together). So far,so good with Cherington. Has restored the minor league with quality depth. Now I’ll have to see how he builds the Major League roster without gutting the prospect depth like his predecessors always did.
PS. Love the handle. Proves that John Jaso was really good for something, LOL!
Jean Matrac
I agree. When the Giants asked to interview Stearns his title was still GM. They denied the Giants request, and then promoted him to PoBO. Not that it carries any weight, but I would have done the exact same thing.
rhswanzey
What’s Omar Minaya up to?
Robertowannabe
The last I heard he was actually back with the Mets. Special ambassador to boost relationships in the Latino community. Was hired for that back in January. Not sure if he still does that or not.
metvibes
Nothing new it was to be expected, . there are qualified people out there but they are not in Sandy’s circle.
Bill M
Either not in Sandy’s circle or simply not available because they’re in someone else’s circle

Savage. Love it. Respect the brewers for holding onto their guys
bravesiowafan
Must be a big extension on the horizon
JoeBrady
There should be, good for both sides.

Is Beane getting permission to be interviewed a conflict of interest cause isn’t he a minority owner of the As
Appalachian_Outlaw
I’d say yes. If you’re Beane why take that job though unless Sandy isn’t lurking? The ownership thing could surely be worked out but I don’t see where it’d be an appealing job to an established GM.
tidybowlman
Sandy is Beane’s mentor and they think in a similar way. Only the owner has nobody to answer to.
The A’s are never going to let him go though. Why would they?
enricopallazzo
Beane was close to leaving the A’s last offseason, supposedly: google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/billy-be…
BeforeMcCourt
He’d be force to sell it. Not sure how taking an interview is a conflict of interest
And before my edit window ended, an article came up that says Beane removed himself from consideration
Joe says...
We all know Cohen is hiring Metsfan22. Why show us all these articles telling who the Mets aren’t hiring?
24TheKid
Smart to hire the only guy who actually believes in the team.
Yankee Clipper
Wait, Mets 22 isn’t Cohen’s pseudonym? Mind blown….{boooom}

Kaitlin Jenner is the perfect hire; Mets take over Page Six AND the back pages.

They won’t get away with disrespecting my Mets like this. We should get an exemption due to our rich history and contributions to the growth of MLB as a whole

The Answer is pretty simple who they should hire. But everyone made this guy the scapegoat..
jjd002
I think his career in baseball is done
smytds
Ugh. I think the Mets have a better shot getting Brad Pitt than the real Billy Beane
julyn82001
A’s Billy Beane is too comfy here in California, he his raising a young family too so the Mets job is a no-no…
Rangers29
This title made me lol.
Yankee Clipper
The Mets make me lolololol.
Mike LaValliere
I chuckled as well. Pretty much all Mets news make me laugh at this point. If Cohen really wants to build a new, serious baseball culture, start with firing Sandy. Period. As long as he has any say in anything related to the Mets, they will continue to be whatever it is they have been for the last 20 years.
fisher40
Cohen is proving he’s nothing more than baseballs version of Daniel Snyder of the Washington Football team.
sox4ever
Mets should’ve hired Bloom when they had the chance. They need to hire anyone available from the Rays this time around
Camden453
Hire Arod
dirkg
Granted we have our fair share of circus folk here, but from the West Coast, it seems like the Mets are an absolute sh:t show.
Jean Matrac
This is why people shake their heads at the Mets. Why in the wide world of sports, would the Mets think they had any chance of hiring Stearns? The Brewers denied the Giants permission to interview him in 2018. Worse yet, the Mets were previously denied permission to interview Stearns a year ago. What made the Mets think that the Brewers would suddenly reverse direction and make Stearns available, after the team he built won 95 games and won a division title?
tidybowlman
It’s malpractice for them not to ask.
Jean Matrac
I have no problem with them asking, But given the history of the Brewers, and their previous denials, maybe the Mets should have made their request on the down low. They needed to be more circumspect, and not so public about their wish list. All three of which, even most fans knew, were unlikely. Perceptions are important, and the perception here is they’ve once again. shot themselves in the foot.
Bud Selig Fan
Cohen is an arrogant fool. Did he really think Attanasio would grant him permission to poach the best small-market executive in the game (sorry Tampa) from him when he’s still under contract and worse yet, after already denying him permission LAST offseason. This is a bad joke. Attanasio being vocal over the years about the large-market teams poaching SM teams executives I suppose not registering in his inflated head. Is it any wonder why Attanasio voted no to the Mets sale to Cohen?
Cohens_Wallet
Bloom would have been hired for the Mets if he were available now. Past regime made obvious decisions look like rocket science. Only thing left to do now is wait the turn till something worthwhile shows up.
Get as many LOL’s out now as much as you can, when the tides turn (and we all know they will eventually) Cohen’s wallet will be relentless in bringing in as many rings as he can. Till then Mets fans should be happy they finally have an owner that will definitely get it done. Just a matter of time.
sfes
You made me smile briefly.
jwt421
You say that with such conviction yet there is nothing to show that would happen with Sandy still in the mix. Why he gets a pass for the past 11 years is beyond me. LOL Mets is as much about him as anything else you can point to,
All this talk about Beane, Stearns, and Epstein is typically Mets behavior over the past decade, Set unobtainable goals to get the fans excited and then sell us the outcome that was always the original plan. Someone else said it here. I would not be surprised if Sandy’s son ends up with a large role after it is all said and done.
Jean Matrac
The size of the wallet is no guarantee of producing a winner.

In a suprise move Mets bring in former owners the Wilpons to run FO with Jeff serving as GM and Fred being PBO. More news still to come!
Rsox
No Theo, no Beane, no Stearns. Apparently for all of Cohen’s cash he can’t find anyone to preside over the dumpster fire he calls a team
Julio Franco's Birth Certificate
Neal Huntington is available. Unless his title is President of Sandwich Operations, then Subway might turn down the Mets interview request.

@tad2b13 I never said it was.

Cohen and Alderson stick their nose in and meddle. Why would he want that job ?

My comment was removed for some reason, but like I said I don’t believe anything this clown Martino says. This guy makes stuff up and doesn’t answer for his reckless reporting. CLOWN!
