Blue Jays ownership recently denied the Mets’ request to interview Toronto president/CEO Mark Shapiro as part of New York’s ongoing front office search, report Ken Davidoff, Joel Sherman and Mike Puma of the New York Post. Shapiro becomes the third known Mets’ target of the day to be ruled out as a possibility, joining Brewers GM Matt Arnold and Cardinals GM Michael Girsch.
A Shapiro pursuit would’ve always been a longshot, not too dissimilar from New York’s earlier unsuccessful runs at A’s executive vice president Billy Beane and Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns. Shapiro has paired with general manager Ross Atkins to run baseball operations for the Jays since 2015, and he inked a five-year contract extension this January. The Post scribes suggest it’s unlikely Shapiro would’ve given much thought to making the jump to Queens even if Jays ownership had given him the opportunity to do so.
New York has also had reported interest in Giants GM Scott Harris and Dodgers assistant GM Brandon Gomes, but both took themselves out of consideration in favor of remaining with their current clubs. Los Angeles senior vice president of baseball ops Josh Byrnes is among the publicly-known candidates who haven’t since been ruled out; the Mets are also reportedly considering a couple of internal options, and there are surely potential targets with other organizations whose names have yet to be reported.
clrrogers
I’m glad the Blue Jays said no. I think Shapiro has done a nice job for them.
NoRegretzkys
I agree, he and Atkins get a lot of undeserved flack it seems in Toronto, but they have built the team really well. It sucked to see SWR and Martin go, but if they can re-sign Berrios before he reaches free agency, I’ll take it. Still a few prospects left.
iverbure
Hopefully the Mets don’t hire Dan o’dowd I’ll miss him too much calling fans idiots for their ridiculous trade proposals.

Starting to wonder if we’ll get pitched on “an apologetic Zack Scott will resume his role as acting GM after attending DWI School.”
Porter and Scott – besides their extracurricular activities – had similar resumes to some of these younger candidates. Porter is banned / suspended for another year, Scott is “on leave.”

I half-expect Cohen and Alderson to hold a press conference and either say “We’re not crooks” or to shake some dice in their hands and mumble something about strawberries.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a situation quite like this in professional baseball. It’s now at the point that anyone that takes the job will be a running joke.

I was trying to keep things logical, realistic, and calm. Because it’s no where near as bad as the media portrays it. That’s one of the big reasons I love this website. The vast majority of these situations are either the executives current employer wouldn’t allow it or something like Beane (family reasons) or Theo (wanted a stake in the team). That last one may be who eventually becomes the top exec. Give him his 2% of the team (which is worth around 50 mil) and off they go. I’m totally guessing here, but Cohen may be waiting the market to set itself before committing a stake in his team. Again I’m guessing. But I’m starting to get worried. Although I think it’s the most unlikely of scenarios, people may just dislike Sandy Anderson or not want to work with him or people dislike Steve Cohen. That is possible and realistic. Cohen did some very bad things. Like legendarily bad. I work for a hedge fund and when I joined the company there are several days of training. One of the trainings is about Steve Cohen and what he did. It’s something that a lot of people hate. Anyway, I’m worried that they may have to go with someone who can’t handle the role or won’t succeed.

Extremely normal. Cohen is starting with the best. It’s a smart call. Start with the very best where you may strike gold. If you don’t then you work your way down to the next tier, and so on. He’s also trying to avoid an “executive in training” scenario like the past 2.
Mattimeo09
There’s being optimistic and then there’s being delusional. That’s the difference between the Mets FO and everyone else.
How many times has an MLB team allowed a high-ranking FO member to make a lateral move to another organization?
Not many, and none of them were President of Baseball Ops.
stymeedone
@calabros
Everything you said is valid but the first two words. This is not “extremely normal” for any other team in the sheer number of candidates turning them down or the public spectacle of how its happening.

People like Beane, Shapiro, and Stearns shouldn’t be held against the Mets as it doesn’t hurt to ask about long shot candidates. And Arnold was denied permission to interview so that can’t be held against them either.
AGMs taking their names out of the running themselves is a bigger deal as it shows there is something preventing them from taking promotions. I have a feeling the presence of Sandy is scaring people away.
iverbure
Sandys presence? More like that buffoon owner who can’t stay off social media. Smart people don’t want to deal with the media attention that will surely come weekly when Cohen asks the fans if the gm should make a trade for a new RP.

With sandy there, whoever is hired is being hired to be a #2. Really #3 under Cohen too. Tough to leave a good situation to be the eventual scapegoat and it’s just a matter of time
In addition, Cohen is likely to be a Moreno type owner, who steps in and makes dumb impulse moves coaxed by agents. We’ve already seen it with Lindor
George Theodore
Dumb impulse moves? Ridiculous. The Mets were applauded for their Lindor trade and the local and national press were clamoring “pay the man.” At least be factually correct.
BobbyKidd1965
This is a huge pet peeve of mine. It’s never a good look when the owner is on Twitter every day talking to fans. Does he not have anything better to do with his billionaire life? Perception is everything, and I have to believe that the Mets are laughably considered New York’s white trash team amongst the leagues upper management and owners’ opinions. I was really hoping that change of ownership would forever wipe that image out. I guess I can’t have everything.
of9376
It’s def not the owner. Most GM’s would love to have an owner who had unlimited funds. The lack of interest is solely because of Sandy.
sf2win
Wrong. Anyone who can buy a baseball franchise has adequate funds to propel a team forward. A problematic owner translates to unending headaches.
Ultimately, Sandy is replaceable. Cohen is not.

The GM position has also changed significantly in recent years. It wasn’t that long ago that the President of Baseball Operations didn’t exist… but then teams needed to make a higher role than GM so they could steal other teams GMs that are only allowed to leave their current contracts if it’s for a promotion with another team.
The GM position is pretty much what used to be Assistant GM.. and it’s all run by sabermetrics for most teams these days, so why be what most fans see as the face of the front office in a market where the Mets will always be second to the Yankees, and fans are as bad as any fans in baseball.

Please Please Please, Let the Mets inteview him. Please pay the Mets to take Shapiro away.
Shapiro is a great administrator and CEO but a terrible talent evaluator and he cannot win a WS. Twelve years of no winning in Cleveland and 5 years no winning in Toronto tells us that.
The BlueJays will NEVER win a World Series with Shapiro head of baseball for the BlueJays. That is why Anthopoulous didn’t stay. He knew better.
shane
Dude, spoilers.
solaris602
As a Tribe fan I suffered through all 12 of those years. Shapiro is great at fielding winning teams, but he’s allergic to making moves that put his teams over the top. And if you call him out on it he’ll put you to sleep with a 30-minute presser compiled of nothing but meaningless business speak. If that man has ever uttered one sentence of substantial information publicly, it would have been breaking news.

How is it irrelevant if your owner is either restricting you from improving the roster, or even worse, forcing you to cut money?
That seems mighty relevant to someone’s ability to independently build a team. If a controlling owner has his hands everywhere, it really isn’t just the executive’s team, is it?
Samuel
@ BeforeMcCourt;
What are you talking about?
The FO head is given a budget. If he exceeds it and can’t spend more that not ” restricting you from improving the roster, or even worse, forcing you to cut money”.
The Rays have had the smallest payroll budget in MLB for years. They deal with it quite well.
JoeBrady
jimmertee
Cey, Irrelevant. Shapiro hasn’t won. Period.
====================================
Absolute nonsense. Your point seems to be that someone with a $63M payroll should win a WS as often as someone with a $263M payroll. If we both car shopping, and you have $63,000 to spend, and I have $263,000 to spend, who do you think gets the better car?
iverbure
Imagine only hiring GMs of POBO if they won a World Series. 22 teams wouldn’t ever have these positions filled.
Jimmer still hasn’t figured out only won team wins every year and more importantly more than one team is successful not just the team that wins.

Has Anthopoulous won anything?
Aren’t you the same person that said Bichette has no chance to hit in the Majors?
Aren’t you the same person that said Vladdy is an unmitigated bust?
How many times has AA won the Executive of the year??? I know how many times Shapiro has won it…
Worst and least knowledgeable Jays fan ever, sad you are the comments section representative for this teams fan base.
jimmertee
K man you are delusional.
If you are going to quote me get it correct. You are mistaken.
I said Vlad was going to be a star almost every single time I commented on Vlad even when the morons in these pages said the Jays should trade him after his first down year. I said be patient with Vlad, he is learning how to be a star.
For Bichette, I said he would be a below average shortstop and when his career was over he would be seen as a below average player because his swing was so explosive that his body wouldn’t be able to handle it over time and his wrists and core would give out. I started calling Bichette’s health issues when he was in AA. Regarding Bichette, we will see the injury bug hit him, just a few years, it will happen.
As far as AA goes, he is an elite evaluator and knows how to acquire players to try to win. Shapiro is terrible at both and is focused on “long-term” competitiveness because that gives him peace and job security, but he will never win , ever.
jimmertee
K Kid, you were saying? Braves in Six. Anthopoulous wins.

I don’t find it particularly newsworthy that guys aren’t interested in making lateral moves to join the Mets, or that teams aren’t interested in letting the Mets poach their front office talent. The Phillies had the same problem last offseason before settling on Dombrowski. The legitimate problem is the apparent lack of interest from guys like Gomes or Girsch who (in a vacuum) you would expect to want a chance at a higher ranking position (insofar as being involved with the Mets can ever be a “higher ranking position”).
I also don’t think Cohen being a knucklehead & a walking PR nightmare is necessarily a good explanation either. Owners over-promise and say stupid things all the time. The bigger issue to me is Cohen’s insistence on keeping Alderson in a poorly defined role that seems liable to interfere in baseball ops (especially if things go badly). Why would anyone want to be a POBO for the Mets when they have one on staff unofficially who the owner clearly has a lot of reverence for?
George Theodore
The problem with the Sandy narrative is he has one more year on his contract. If no one has been interviewed yet and they are compiling a list of those who are interested for interview purposes, I find it hard to believe they would keep Sandy around if during any interview, it became clear they could not hire their choice because Sandy was still on board. The reporting on this issue has been speculative and amateurish.
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski was the Phillies Ownership’s 1st choice.
He turned them down since he was working to bring an expansion team to Nashville.
Phillies circled back to Dombrowski after they had looked at other candidates.
Phillies Ownership talked Dombrowski into taking the gig.
So, that makes Dombrowski the both the Phillies 1st and last choice.
Orel Saxhiser
It’s getting exciting. If Al Avila turns them down, I get to shout, “Bingo.”

The biggest problem with your proposition, kingman, is the mere fact that rich people do not like to spend money they don’t need to spend. Money is his priority over all else. He’s not going to spend his most prized possession (wealth) to make a statement to the league.
JoeBrady
Of course, you don’t have the foggiest idea whether or not that is true.

He should sue the Asstros. He’s been punished far more than anyone else, and the developers and executors of the multi-year cheating scandal were given immunity!
josebatista89
And JOBS. AJ Hinch knew about it he was in the dugout you could HEAR THE BANG BANG. Listen to it. Alex Cora was IN THE DUGOUT. So was Carlos Beltran.
SportsFan0000
And they all have MLB jobs after 1 year suspensions.
Why not hire Luhnow for the Mets?!
deleted account
If the Mets want someone who would make a difference they should hire me
crazybaseballgal
There has to be a black sheep member of the Steinbrenner family somewhere who is aching to take the reins of the poor Mets after their epic death spiral this season.
Yankee Clipper
Nope, Hal already had a job.
crazybaseballgal
These guys turning down the job read the employee reviews on Glassdoor.com
RedWing1
Hire Jeff Luhnow and never look back.
Appalachian_Outlaw
“Congratulations, you were our 303rd choice for the job!” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “You’re the first person we wanted!”

It’s gonna be John Hart and Coppy. I just know it.

Brian Sabean all day
Samuel
The guy that had the Giants payroll budget, major league roster, and farm system in tatters for years before he was phased out now walks on water (same with Epstein, but not as bad)? And fans here think that George Steinbrenner built winning teams by just spending money so FO people and managers were happy to work for him.
Hey, maybe the Mets can get Matt Carpenter from the Cardinals. Look how good he used to hit and field. I hear he’s interested in a playing a starting position for them.
josebatista89
@Samuel Ding ding ding, YOU GET IT. Finally someone who gets why the Giant’s moved on from Brian Sabean, and went with a more of a TODAY’S GM. All of these guys want Brian Sabean because they think ohhh well Cohen has DEEP pockets and we can just go out there and spend spend spend. Yet the two teams that are in the World Series is because yes they acquired players. But they also have GM’S who Developed and drafted well. Yes they went thru rebuilds but you have to or you don’t win. Hence the Yankees, and Dodgers.
Yes the Dodgers do well in the regular season yet come playoff time they don’t go ANYWEHER. Hey ask the Yankees how’s it working out form them oh yea that’s right barley making the playoffs.
jim stem
Maybe these guys are just happy where they or prefer their current positional job responsibilities?
JoeBrady
I am officially withdrawing my name from consideration for the NYM’s POBO job.
LordD99
My phone rang at 6 am and I was momentarily concerned it might be Steve Cohen on the other end of the line.
Yankee Clipper
I can’t wait for the quotes when they finally fill the position after the 263rd offer: “This is the guy we wanted all along. He was our top choice and we targeted him right from the start!”
Canosucks
The guy how finally takes the job will come out with a paper bag over his head; the unknown POBO.
Bob333
Another one bites the dust LMAO
josebatista89
Starting at 1 P.M Today i’m going to make a cup of coffee and just sit back and watch how the Mets get denied by Billy Owen’s, Pat Bendix, James Washington. Then i’m going to read the Hire Brian Sabean chants hire Brian Sabean chants just because he is a big name and wants more money in his bank account before he dies. Then read how Jeff Luhnow knew about the cheating when clearly he wasn’t in the dugout but AJ Hinch, Alex Cora, and Carlos Beltran where.
Mitchell Page
They’re just going to have to face the facts , and go with Ed Kranepool , or Keith Hernandez .
Camden453
The truth about the Mets POBO search is a lot of these candidates have dirt in their background that will be exposed if they take the job
They saw what happened to Porter and Callaway. How many other executives have a similar history? Probably very many
SportsFan0000
Jeff Luhnow would shake up the Mets and the Baseball World.
MLB and Astros Owner Jim Crane threw Luhnow under the bus as a fall guy/scape goat for the sign stealing.
Luhnow’s lawyer has identified many Astros emails that prove Luhnow was not involved with the sign stealing…
Emails that are specifically labelled
“DO NOT SHARE WITH OR TELL JEFF LUHNOW”
Cohen needs to “grow a pair” , Go all “Al Davis” and hire Jeff Luhnow.
It would be Al Davis/Raiders/Rozelle all over again.
Imagine in a 2-3 years, pictures on the field of Cohen and Luhnow
raising the World Series trophy with a dejected looking Rob Manfred
“eating crow” on the other side of the TV announcer
(like the picture of Al Davis raising the Super bowl trophy
and glaring at Pete Rozelle…CLASSIC)!
But, Cohen is too much of a wimp to do this…
Canosucks
Cohen doesn’t care that every Met fan is now wearing the scarlet letter “M” because we are all getting screwed in public. And like a fool I thought Cohen over he Tampons would be an improvement.

As a Cowboy and Met fan, I am truly cursed. They both should be perennial powerhouses since they have a resource advantage. With a cap in football and a luxury tax in baseball, they can’t outspend everyone on players. I don’t understand why they don’t use that financial advantage in every other aspect of the organization?
Jerry Jones can pay Moore and Quinn triple what they are offered to be head coaches. The Mets could pay a POB and GM millions more to work for them. I know money isn’t everything, but plenty of people follow the money. Why don’t the Mets just come out and say that’s what they will do to get the best employees into their organization?
Bob333
One thing in common both have JACKASS OWNERS and money doesn’t always talk.Especially to work for an hands on owner.
MarlinsFanBase
Mike Hill is available. Fits right in with the Mets tradition. Loria can put in a good word to Cohen. Hill is a great Yes Man. He’d completely help Cohen with getting more Tweets out.
Bob333
Mets miss on another Mgr Bob Melvin he would not come here anyway but they did not even try.
Bob333
I see a Mexican League Mgr and some has been Gm with a name.
