Clint Frazier has been on the injured list since the end of June, and Yankees skipper Aaron Boone revealed to reporters last night that the 27-year-old outfielder won’t make it back to the team this season (Twitter link via Sports Illustrated’s Max Goodman).
It’s been a brutal season for Frazier, who looked like a breakout candidate from 2019-20 when he posted a combined .267/.347/.497 batting line with 20 homers, 20 doubles and a triple in 465 plate appearances. He appeared in just 66 games this season and tallied 218 plate appearances with a woeful .186/.317/.317 output in that time.
More concerning than his bottom-line performance, however, have been the health issues that have plagued him. Frazier has been on the injured list with blurred vision, dizziness and other vertigo-like symptoms that remain unresolved. Those are troubling on their own but particularly alarming for a player who missed significant time in 2018 with a concussion. Frazier looked to be on the upswing in mid-August when he set out on a minor league rehab assignment and went 4-for-10 in his first three games. However, he pulled himself from that assignment prior to the fourth game, Boone noted at the time, because he was “not quite feeling where he needed to.” He hasn’t played at any level since.
“He’s seen so many specialists, trying to get answers,” Boone said of Frazier last night. “…Right now we just want him to get to a point where he’s well and able to get back to playing full bore.”
The player’s health and general well-being are clearly the primary concerns in an injury situation with this much uncertainty. The Yankees will face some kind of decision on Frazier this offseason, as he’ll be arbitration-eligible for the second time as a Super Two player after taking home a $2.1MM salary in 2021.
Any decisions of that nature will be informed by whatever doctors are able to glean regarding his health over the next couple of months. The Yankees control Frazier for three more years beyond the current season, and he even has a minor league option year remaining, so if he is indeed able to get back on track, he could yet have a role with the club in the future. For now, the focus remains on determining the source of the ongoing issues and then, hopefully, getting Frazier to the point where he’s able to take the field again.
No point in returning him. Don’t rush him since the team isn’t making the playoffs
Agreed, no sense in rushing deGrom back.
Or Noah Syndergaard. Let the guy reach free agency in one piece.
Braves will go as far as Soroka career this year. Like they always do.
LOL! Soroka has barely pitched over the last 2 years yet they have been as good as they’ve been in years – and still in 1st place despite 2 2020 Silver Sluggers or runner-ups (Ozuna/Acuna) and a remade bullpen and OF. Only 2nd time in MLB history and entire IF has 25 or more HR each (Riley, Swanson, Albies, Freeman).
Soroka?! You’re killin’ me Smalls.
There in first bc the better team in their division had more injures…. But yeah celebrate
One reason I read the comments is to see what ridiculous comment Metsfan22 will make next. Shoots mouth off before year, finds a convenient thing to blame losing on, trolls those with actual, reasonable points.
Thank you for bringing comic relief to my day, 22. You never let me down.
The team in front of the Braves have had to many players underachieving which is why they are in first. McCann, Comforto, Lindor, Smith and McNeil has been terrible. I know Lindor has come around up but he did his share of damage before picking it.
Keep being dishonest about why the Mets aren’t in first place.
The team in front of the Braves, are you drunk? There is no team in front of the Braves.
“Keep being dishonest about why the Mets aren’t in first place.”
The Braves are in first b/c they out did the Mets at the trade dead line, period!
You going to ignore all the Mets underperformers? Have you even looked at their roster? If you did you would see that it’s not simply the Braves outperforming them at the deadline.
The statement about the team ahead of them was a misstatement. Thought I should clear that up for you because if you couldn’t figure that out by yourself, I should probably assume you’re drunk. =}
They’re not celebrating in September – and at this rate – winning the NL East where the first place team would be middle of the pack in almost every other division. Everyone had injuries – some more than others – but you rested on your offseason laurels, while AA used it as motivation to build a decent bullpen, reconstruct an OF, solidify a rotation and trying to get the most catching depth when there was none…until d’Arnaud returned. All things GMs are supposed to do when they’re not getting DWIs and sending salacious pics to co-workers. But keep your homer goggles on, things look better for you that way.
A misstatement? You’re past misstatement, you’re past drunk, you’re well nigh onto shooting stupidity into your veins. @SalaryCapMyth, you can’t get more idiotic than your Mets underperformers statement. They blew it! They choked again!
The Phillies have been plagued by injuries?
You have as many wins the last 2 months as jacob de grom…
Theres always that
Their
This was for metsfan22
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Similar to Lindor, you have to admire someone who’s this committed to being a troll lol
Aren’t Yankee fans ignorant? Can’t face the truth—their team stinks badly. Don’t you love when they play the Past card (how many World Series? when was the last one?). Worst announcers! And that bullpen! As bad as ours (Mets), but they’d never admit it.
Plz don’t return at all!
I don’t get the mystery. It’s the concussion. What other players never fully recovered. Eric Hinske….. There were others
Wasn’t Hinske apparently. Who am I thinking about
Corey Koskie. I’ll stop now lol
You had the first name right, Eric Lindros.
Ryan Church, I believe.
Apparently the doctors are saying it isn’t concussion related or vertigo.
I hate to say this, because I don’t like to question someone’s health, but I’m wondering if he just wants out of New York.
Wrong way to get “out” of a contract as this will have long term implications on any contract moving forward.
Mike Matheny retire from playing due to concussions no?
I was thinking of him. Happened while he was on the Giants I believe.
Nick Esasky came down with vertigo and was never able to return to the field. Same situation as Frazier – doctors could not determine the cause of the problem.
Is he unable to hear the whistling?
Get well soon Clint.
Frazier, Andujar, Torres, Sanchez and so many more. Can these players trade value get any lower?
Hopefully the doctors are able to identify the problem. Must be frustrating and scary.
I remember seeing him play out here.
He flat out played full bore. His bat speed was actually apparent. & in the field between pitches, he was looking at – what I assumed were – scouting reports. After last year, it looked like he’d be part of our core moving forward.
Now, I just want to see him get back on the field. He’s taken quite a bit of heat from the NY media. All over the audacity of admitting he’d like to wear #7.
But he’s a good kid from what I can tell. Works hard & plays hard.
Must be maddening what he’s going through.
Definitely worthy of positive thought/prayers.
Get well soon Clint!
Another overrated yankee prospect.
Another CLE heist.
Cue in the ridiculous trade proposals Yankee fans come up with. I think the worst trade proposal iv seen on the site was 2 years ago, Andujar and Clint Frazier for Nolan Arenado and Jon Gray, with the Rockies taking on half of Arenados salary
Cause mets fans are so smart
They aren’t Yankee fan or Philly fan level of incompetence. So I’ll take it.
MetsFan, are you wearing your state issued safety helmet?
That trade may actually be better than what Colorado actually got for arenado.
If it is, it’s because Gray was not included.
Hey, it’s better than the actual real life proposal of Frazier and Chance Adams for Gerrit Cole lol.
The real life Pittsburgh ask was for Andujar, so there’s that..
Man that would’ve been such a disaster for the Pirates. It’s funny how at the time people thought they were crazy for choosing the Houston one over the Yankees and now looking back they would be in even more trouble had they settled on Andujar.
With his vertigo, I’d trade Frazier to the Guanta so he can stalk Kim Novak and then dive in and save her when she tries to drown herself in the Frisco Bay baby!!
Don’t bogart that joint my friend…..
The Rocks eating a gob of Arenado’s salary in a trade? Inconceivable!
Does the name Nick Esasky ring any bells.
Who?
No, the Braves signed him to a lucrative deal and he never played for them. I guess they got some insurance $ back so at least there’s that.
If you don’t know who Esasky is you must be a millineal or a genX
That isn’t at all true. The only ones who would know are early baby boomers or older . Born in 68 and I had no clue who he was.
I mentioned Esasky in a thread a few months back when Frazier’s situation first came up. I have a nephew who has had vertigo for over 10 years. It’s no joke, he’s lost his drivers license & at times can’t function. Doctors had trouble diagnosing him, maybe there is some of that going on, or maybe some kind of ugly combination of concussion/vertigo?
I have been saying this for at least 2 years, but the Pirates need to make a serious push to acquire via trade or sign Frazier if he is not kept by the Yankees.
Next year’s OF depth for the Pirates is Reynolds and Tsutsugo and that is it.
Gamel has been replacement level enough but shouldn’t be offered any sort of deal from the Pirates.
Frazier would be a low cost with potential to be a longer term starter in the field. Swaggerty is the closest to MLB ready OF they have in the pipeline and Oniel Cruz after that..
That’s not a bad idea at all if Frazier gets medically cleared, especially since his price as far as return has obviously decreased. I’d have no issue with Gamel returning if he’s a 4th outfielder, but I’m legitimately afraid that they might want to pay him as a starter simply because as you said they don’t have anyone else. What would be ideal in my mind would be to find a quality everyday center fielder. Reynolds is good in center, but he’s better in left, and playing left would be less wear and tear for him over the long haul.
Given his health issues, I would assume he would be non-tendered, so the Pirates could possibly sign him on a minor-league deal with a spring training invite.
Tsutsugo is a FA next year, prob go back to Japan.
Will He Retire Because Of This?
Of equal concern is that Aaron Judge was removed from last night’s game after experiencing blurred vision and dizziness.
jokes, insults, and indifference in a thread about a human being suffering a scary condition is truly depressing
With all due respect, where are the jokes/insults about this?
I see nothing but concern
Pirates had their chance for Frazier originally in a package for Cole. Pirates said No. No more deals with Pittsburgh they cost the Yankees a WS a few years ago.
Oh, they are there, @Curly.
You may want to re-peruse the comments. Or not, actually
Yanks are scuffling & this is some pretty bad news about one of our players. Like moths to a flame, those things are bound to attract a certain type of poster.
Sounds like the long covid symptoms to me.
Imagine if he comes back last day of the season and rakes through the playoffs. While playing CF randomly!
Poor Clint Frazier. The Yankees played him enough to showcase the flaws in his game. I would live for him to be packages with Gary Sanchez and bring back someone who can hit AND play the field well. Or maybe just one decent # 2 or 3 starter. You can’t get a number One for that combo, but a good #2 maybe.
I wish Frazier well. However, he has been average at best and I don’t understand what is so appealing about him. He has been average at every level in his career. Please, somebody tell me why you think he is so good. I’m serious about this one. I’ll even listen to ANALytics on this.
