The Yankees have reinstated right-hander Domingo Germán from the 10-day injured list. Outfielder Estevan Florial was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. Additionally, New York announced that Jameson Taillon will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Scranton this evening.
Germán returns after missing nearly two months due to shoulder inflammation. He’d been a reliable back-of-the-rotation option for the Yankees over the season’s first few months, tossing 97 innings of 4.45 ERA ball over 21 appearances (including 18 starts). The 29-year-old has posted solid strikeout and walk numbers, contributing to a more appealing 4.02 SIERA, but he’s been a little too prone to the home run ball.
While Germán served almost exclusively as a starter earlier this year, he seems likely to work from the bullpen for the stretch run. With the regular season dwindling, the Yankees sent Germán on a rather brief rehab assignment in which he made two appearances with the RailRiders. He topped out at 35 pitches in his last outing, so he seems likely to occupy a similar multi-inning relief role to the one Luis Severino took on last night.
Taillon has only been away from the club for two weeks because of a partially torn tendon in his right ankle. Given that shorter absence, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s back in the majors after a lone rehab start. Acquired from the Pirates over the offseason, Taillon has a 4.41 ERA/4.29 SIERA in his first year in the Bronx.
The Yankees enter play tonight half a game back in a jam-packed American League Wild Card race. After tonight’s series finale against the Rangers, they’ll play road series against the two clubs directly ahead of them in standings — the Red Sox and Blue Jays — before closing out the year at home against a Rays team that looks likely to have clinched the AL East by that point.
ws_champs
In a normal, expanded roster year, Florian would be getting more ABs.
ws_champs
Florial* AC..
Fever Pitch Guy
Pineda beats the Jays yet again!
Toronto is now 4-5 in their last nine games, so much for being “the hottest team in baseball”.
John Kennedy
Not really. Yankees tend to mess up the development of their young players. This is normal for them.
rossf
No he wouldn’t. Yankees need wins, and Florial
Getting AB’s doesn’t help that cause. He would be getting a lot more pinch running opportunities though.
Joe says...
With Gil, German, King and Severino all able to pitch multiple innings out of the pen, it should help a lot.
Ducky Buckin Fent
It definitely should, @Joe.
& Yanks certainly need all the help they can get right now. 10 games left. This team, man. I can see them going 9-1 just as easily as 1-9 down the stretch.
Taillon & German have shown they can be penciled into next years rotation. They’ve both been pretty solid if unspectacular.
Ancient Pistol
Yes DBF, 2021 has been a mystery as to why the team is so frustrating. Who would have thought at the beginning of the season, for instance, that DJL can’t hit, Judge and Stanton would remain healthy, Voit would miss most of the year, and Torres would be such a flop? Also, where’s the power bats and the light’s out bullpen?
My guess, as a Yankees fan is they go 5-5 and miss out unless Boston and/or Toronto go on a 3-7 type run.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah, 5-5 is a perfecly acceptable guess, too, @Nihilus.
But. To me what we are talking about with this is exactly the reason I’ d like to see this club make the playoffs. I have no difficulties seeing this team “get hot”. Unlike previous iterations of this core.
Of course…one can also see getting blown out 13-2 at Fenway or some other ignominy.
As our power has dissipated so has our offense in general. No one exemplifies that more than Gleyber. No idea what happened there.
I do – however – think the ‘pen has been pretty good though. Chapman has had some mesmerizingly spectacular blown saves & Green, Loaisiga, & Luetge have been showing signs of overuse, but overall they’ve still been a strength.
Last: were you a poster over at the old River Ave Blues?
whyhayzee
“Green, Loaisiga, & Luetge have been showing signs of overuse”
whyhayzee4 weeks ago
This is problematic. They are overusing Green, Loaisiga and Luetge. This will come crashing down if they can’t find other useful pieces to share the load. You can’t ask those three guys to pitch 80 innings and have anything left for the postseason. That’s how Torre lost his job.
Ducky Buckin Fent
To some extent they have, @whyhazee.
Holmes has been getting regular work. & that 73% ground ball rate will play. Rodríguez is – at the very least – an excellent matchup lefty. & King has looked like another multi-inning weapon. So the load has been spread out somewhat as of late.
A lot of those innings came earlier in the year. But: our lack of starting pitching depth has been a burden on the ‘pen all year. (Not to mention the uninspiring offense.) At least Hal won’t have to pay any CBT tax though.
So
whyhayzee
I just took a look back at the WC’s for the past 7 or 8 years and the teams that relied on a strong bullpen almost always had their important guys throwing innings totals in the 60’s. It takes more and more pitchers every year to get this done. More jobs for the itinerant bullpen guys. So there’s that.
Joe says...
@Ducky, I’m less sold on German but there’s a lot to like about Taillon. I do think German can become a good swing man next year.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Taillon certainly has more upside.
When he’s on, he can throw all 5 of his pitches for strikes. He took awhile to find his command (understandable) & seems to have hit a wall here recently (also understandable).
But he looks to be a solid #3 or 4
German has a 110 ERA+.
He has actually thrown better than Taillon (106) this season. He also has had to work his way back. He’s done pretty well under all the circumstances.
But the seasons these 2 – along with Montgomery & maybe Cortes – have had, does make filling out next year’s rotation a lot easier.
Joe says...
Definitely liking the way next year’s rotation is setting up. I would like to see them go for Ray. A rotation of Cole, Sevy, Monty, Ray and Taillon would be awesome. Add in King and Cortez (who could start in the pen as a multi innings guy) for when someone goes down and its on.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Damn.
Yet another GIDP.
Anyway: yes.
The rotation (& I think the ‘pen too) are in a pretty good place for ’21. Just need some rotation stability. Ray would fit. He’s been durable which is definitely something I’m hoping the Yanks are looking for. Really hope Cash doesn’t get cheap there again.
Had we added another starter over the winter – or even a viable one at the deadline – this team would be in a much better spot.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I think a big reason the offense is streaky is because they live or die by the homerun. Just look at Gallo- hitting .200 with 30+ homeruns and a .400 OBP. Stanton, Judge are similar. You shut down the homerun game and you generally shut down the Yankees.
thecoffinnail
Like the Ray idea a lot. Only problem I see there is he is going to expect #2/#3 money. The Yankees have Monty as a solid #3. After another offseason he might find his old rookie form as his TJS gets further into the past. The Yankees need to either resign Rizzo as their big contract or try for Story. They only need a backend lefty veteran for the rotation. Duffy or Lester would fit nicely at half the cost Ray is gonna demand. Matz will also be available if they want somebody a little longer term. By signing Rizzo or Story they free up a pretty decent trade chip as well in Voit or Torres. They are not premium but should bring back a decent bullpen arm with low miles. You know Cashman is gonna chase Schwarber as well. He has had a man crush on him since he tried to get him in the Chapman trade. He wanted one of them and could have gotten Jimenez. Of course Cashman chose the one that would slowly fizzle out. I think it’s finally time to move on from Cashman. He looked like a miracle working 7-8 years ago. Now he just seems to make mistake after mistake.
LeapingLenny
So this is where you are now? How are things in MPLS? I moved two months ago. Now in Wilmington,NC. I moved to NC 25 years ago dude. Remember what happened in ’96?e I am hoping to catch lightning in a bottle 25 years later. I had neighbors that were all Braves fans and I annoyed them so. It was magical.
Lots of Yankee fans down here now.
Best of luck to you and our Yanks. Beat Boston!!!
I will be watching via MLBtv as always.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Well, hell. @LeapingLenny.
Good to see you on the board, man.
Yee-up. One too many run-ins with that Tyler Norton guy over at @PSA. But this place is great, man. Been here a little over a year & I have 1 or 2 posters on most teams in MLB that I pay attention to/interact with.
Love Mpls. Can’t help it. Love the entire upper Midwest; MN, WI, IA, the Dakotas, & the U.P. I get 5 months of bird hunting, just over 9 months of waterfowling, & an excellent spring turkey season. My house is in NE. Right off Main. The Mississippi is basically right across the street. When it’s warm there is always something to fly fish for.
But, NC is beautiful too, man. Been to the Smokies & the Outer Banks. & I am sure you, your better half, & your dogs appreciate the warmer weather.
To each their own, uh?
Should be a good series.
I am unabashedly rooting for “just a wild card”. I want to see this club get hot in October. They could! I will be watching too. Best to you & yours.
Go Yanks.
red sox suck.
LeapingLenny
Yeah we need this one and that makes me a bit uncomfy. Lots of pressure but we almost played ourselves out of the tournament chase so I guess this is welcomed.
Do you agree with my take that the window is a ‘closin and we need to grab some glory NOW! This October!
Remember I moved here to get the 25th anniversary title we really need.
Yes the doggies are much happier here and will not miss the MN winters. Ironically there is a HUGE dog beach nearby that requires 4WD that I sure could have used during my decade in MN so we might end up upgrading to a Jeep or something. Any suggestions?
Considering Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Rogue,etc.
I need short bed and four doors. New territory for me in lots of ways.
GO YANKS!!!!
Ducky Buckin Fent
But it *is* exciting.
Ya know? Slugging it out with Toronto & the sox (2 very good ballclubs) for the two last spots is great. I’ve even been watching the sox & Jay’s during commercials, last night, etc.
Seeing as how we are the damn Yankees, I just sort of assume we will make it. Yanks have come through for me a lot of times over the years.
D’accord.
Time is trickling away on this particular core. Sad but true. I know ’17 didn’t end in a title. & maybe all that time out in the cold Midwest winters have addled me. But: that season was a blast.
& there you have The Problem. This group has made the playoffs 4 straight years (after a decent fight the year before), including 2 LCS appearances. They’ve always gone on *some* type of run.
Twins, Brewers, & Tigers – for example – would kill for a run like that. But to us, it’s sorta “ho-hum”. Ya know?
I am a politically incorrect oversize SUV guy. Loved my (I know, I know) H2. Rocking a Yukon XL with the AT5 off-road trim kit currently. Good mobile office as a contractor. Can load a couple kayaks on top & tow a boat at the same time. Can sleep in it. All kinds of gear; GPS, Wi-fi, Sat Radio.
& yeah. 11 mpg.
But. I have had great luck over the years with Jeeps. My son & girlfriend drive them. Not much. But best I got.
expos_back_by_2025
Gil might get sent down with all this arms coming back
Bright Side
King is the best among them.
mlbnyyfan
Does anyone know why this season rosters were not expanded more? Is this the new rule moving forward?
gruber63
@mlbnyyfan, Prior to 2020, Major League rosters could expand to include as many members of the system’s 40-man roster as the front office wanted. While the extra help in the heat of a playoff race was certainly welcomed, bloated rosters often led to lengthy games and teams playing with very different roster priorities. Capping the roster at a still-expanded 28 can give Major League clubs that extra boost toward the end of the season while making sure matters don’t get too out of hand.
Fever Pitch Guy
Gruber you said it perfectly.
I might add the proliferation of OMG’s, fueled by teams like the Yankees, would be even worse with a 40-man roster.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Took care of business, @Gruber!
Gotta win this series with the sox though. Need a good start from Cole. Get us started off right.
gruber63
@Ducky, Totally agree with you vs Sox, then on to Canada for huge 3 game series.
Mickey777
Ducky,
I’m counting on that one last hot streak you predicted about a week ago! Hope you were prophetic. Got to have a win from Cole! If they can win at least 1 game against the Red Sox then they they go into Toronto with a fighting chance.
Yankees’s biggest need for next year a dependable number 2 starter, then the rest of the staff falls into place.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hey, @Mickey.
Big game tonight, uh? Need this one…
Ya know, the different mathematical permutations are maddening. Hell, even Seattle seems to still be in it (as Oakland slides away).
But: if we can win these next 3 series, we should be in. Not all that easy as these are 3 of the best ballclubs in the AL.
Really hoping to win the series against the sox here. But yeah. Only getting swept would be an outright disaster. Wish I knew what to expect from these guys!
Personally, I downgrade that need just a bit. I would say a dependable 3 (or better!) & the entire staff is finished for next year. We both hit the key though; “dependable”. Need one more guy to take the ball every 5 days & keep us in the game.
The lineup is another story.
But pitching looks good moving forward.
Go Yanks.
red sox suck.
justwhoami
Ha
mlbnyyfan
@gruber thanks so much. I think 40 was extreme but 30 is a better number
Cosmo2
Go Yankees. Now that my Mets are out of it I’m rooting for the Yanks. Make my uncle happy.
dasit
would be nice if the mets could put up a little more of a fight against the red sox
ArianaGrandSlam
When are they DFAing Heaney?
Grim Reaper49
Somebody has to throw BP
dasit
the bullpen is on fumes. severino, german, king and holmes are going to see a ton of high-leverage innings in the next 10 games. might even see adam warren. would be fun if ridings got himself healthy and came to the rescue
jackjohnson52183
Can They Trade Away Aaron Hicks & Gleyber Torres,After The Season Comes To A Close?
J.H.
The Rays may clinch by that final series, but if they have a chance to knock the Yankees out of it, they won’t pull any punches.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I don’t follow the Rays enough but they would be smart to rest/pull out early some of their regulars if they have already clinched before that final series.
J.H.
For sure, but it’s become such a rivalry over the past few years that just rolling over to them would not go over well. In fact, having a solid final series and potentially ending the Yankees season would be huge momentum going into the postseason.
gruber63
Twins knock off Jays, Yanks lead #2 AL WC now at 1. Go Twins!!!
Ducky Buckin Fent
Good for the series getting into the sox bullpen here. Good AB by Gardy. Let’s beat up their pen now.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Duck, a little off subject, I ‘ve had a lot of weirdos following me of late. I mean stalking my posts. Have you ever had that problem? I’m talking 3 or 4 of late that I had to mute.
Thoughts?
I buried this in a past thread so no one would see it.
gruber63
Woohoo!!! Yanks scoring early and tack on runs helped knockout the Sox. Go Yanks!!
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yessir.
Got up really early. Got into some diver ducks on the river. Took a little nap. I am ready!
Series off to a pretty good start for us. Now, it’s on to: The Biggest Game Of The Year. Need 5 or 6 good ones out of Nestor. Piveta has been pretty solid for them all year. Be nice to get off to a quick start again. Hurt ’em early.
We really need this series, Gruber.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah.
I have a couple of those. I figure it’s just all part of the fun of being an interesting poster, uh? I oftentimes just ignore them. Lately, sometimes, I have been referring to them as my “groupies”. This appears to be a designation they do not care for.
Personally, I will never “mute” anyone.
It just is too close to censorship in my view.
LeapingLenny
Yeah we couldn’t have asked for more than last night’s magic. There was a Red Sox sticker on a pickup next to me along the ocean just now and I made sure he saw my huge NYY sticker. Probably looks strange with the Minnesota plates still (DMV there is giving me HELL getting me my title- ah MNLars. lol)
Is Cortez gonna turn into a pumpkin? Or a Fred Stanley?
Tis the season for uncanny heroes -as you know.
I just don’t like our schedule and having to turn around and face these creeps in the WC game- wherever it is- depresses me a bit
Meh. We can just keep winning and let the worries take care of themselves.
Was just able to finally turn off the a/c this week here. I heard it got cool up in TC.
No Voit again today. Riding the hot Gardy.
Hey how do you feel about Gardy as a MANAGER???.
Like in………………….2022????
Enjoy my friend.
p.s. so our dogs finally have a yard and my back fence is full of the Yankee flags I had in boxes in MN for years.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
The only reason I’ve muted anyone is they crossed that “creepy line”. I’d guess 3 altogether.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Stanton!
gruber63
5 in a row vs BOS!!! Looking for the sweep tomorrow!
