The Tigers have selected the contract of right-hander Drew Hutchison from Triple-A Toledo, and also called up right-hander Bryan Garcia. The two hurlers will take the places of righties Joe Jimenez (placed on the COVID-related injury list) and Drew Carlton (optioned to Triple-A yesterday).
This will be Hutchison’s second appearance on Detroit’s big league roster this season, as the 31-year-old was previous designated for assignment and then outrighted to Toledo last month. Hutchison’s previous stint saw him make two starts, the first a rough outing against the Indians on August 15 that saw Hutchison allow six runs (but only two earned) in 1 2/3 innings. The righty fared much better in his second start, as he allowed one unearned run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays on August 22.
The result was a 3.00 ERA over six total innings, which served as Hutchison’s first MLB action since the 2018 campaign. At the Triple-A level this season, Hutchison has a 3.77 ERA, 23.5% strikeout rate, and a 10.8% walk rate over 88 1/3 innings for Toledo, starting all 19 of his appearances.
Since the Tigers are already working with a six-man rotation, Hutchison might be deployed out of the bullpen for now. However, as Detroit’s younger starters approach innings limits, Hutchison could be called upon for spot-start duty, or perhaps piggyback outings.

Evidently not much interest in this report. I’m guessing this might be Bryan Garcia’s last chance to impress. 40 man roster spots will be reserved for those they see helping on the road forward.

Such a shame to see Carlton optioned back to AAA so soon. He’s more than paid his dues in the minors and I was really happy for him when he got called up. Hopefully he shows well in spring training next year and makes the opening day roster.

Hutchison was a terrible return for Liriano, McGuire, and Ramirez back when the Pirates were dumping salary. Liriano was no loss but McGuire and Ramirez are both useful major league contributors. One of the many boneheaded moves in the final years of the Huntingdon regime.

Not going to defend the return but Liriano was absolutely horrible when they were trying to dump his salary. Neither McGuire or Ramirez have done much since the This is the most playing time that McGuire ever has received this season and if not for a blazing week or so when he tore up Baltimore’s pitching he has not been good. Hitting only .223 since July 1 with a .600 OPS Miami thought so much of Remirez that after what seemed like a decent 2019 they let him go on waivers for Cleveland to pick up. He has only been average for Cleveland. Still not a great deal but considering how bad Liriano was, they did not give up much for the Jays to take him off of their hands.

Go-I agree. They saved many millions by dumping Liriano. The other two are backups at best.Hutchison was just a placeholder, nothing more.NH actually was one of the best at making trades in the latter half of his career in Pittsburgh. As a salary dump, this one fit the bill.

Just rotating inconsequential arms late in the season so no valuable arms get hurt.

Need role players like Hutch to come up every now and then for a spot start. You’d rather it be a younger guy that has a higher ceiling, but you also dont want to treat a youngster like a yo-yo.

Both moves seem logical to me: Mize and Skubal have their outings already shortened, thus an inning-eater like Hutchison (who got by somehow in his last stint) is welcome. Carlton has pitched a bit yesterday, so B. Garcia provides a fresh arm. The guy was a decent closer last year, so at least I haven’t given up hope for him.

Why send Drew Carlton down?
