The Phillies have placed Archie Bradley on the IL with an oblique injury, according to a team announcement. The club has selected the contract of lefty Kyle Dohy to take his place. To make room on the 40-man roster, lefty Matt Moore was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL. (Matt Gelb of The Athletic first reported Bradley was heading to the IL and that Dohy would be coming up.)
This is surely a frustrating development for Bradley and the Phillies, as he has been a largely solid member of a shaky relief corps for the club. The righty has logged 51 innings for the Phils with an ERA of 3.71. His strikeout and walk rates are both slightly worse than average, at 17.9% and 9.8%, respectively, but his 55.7% groundball rate is excellent. This is his second trip to the injured list this year, as he missed over a month at the beginning of the season, also with an oblique injury. If this injury is as severe as that one, it has the potential to finish Bradley’s season. The Phils are still hunting for the NL East crown and are just 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta, but another month-long stretch on the injured list would keep Bradley out of action until the World Series. For what it’s worth, Bradley himself said he hopes to pitch again in October, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Signed by the Phillies to a one-year, $6MM deal in January, the 29-year-old is a free agent at season’s end.
As for Dohy, he was added to Philadelphia’s 40-man roster in November to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft, but cleared waivers and was outrighted off the roster April 1st. The southpaw has spent the bulk of this year at Double-A, logging 37 1/3 innings out of the bullpen there, as well as 5 1/3 innings at Triple-A. Overall, he has an ERA of 2.95, with an excellent strikeout rate of 35.1%, but a concerning walk rate of 15.1%. As soon as he is called upon to enter a game, it will be his major league debut.
Moore was just placed on the 10-day IL September 23rd with a lower back strain, meaning today’s transfer to the 60-day IL officially concludes his season. The Phillies signed him to a one-year, $3MM deal in the offseason, based on a strong performance in Japan in 2020. Unfortunately, 2021 didn’t go quite as smooth for the 32-year-old. He logged 73 innings this year in 24 games, 13 starts, with an ERA of 6.29. His strikeout rate of 18.9% and walk rate of 11.4% were both worse than league average.

Phillies have 0 margin for error. Losing Bradley hurts, but this is pretty much the story of the NLE and all of baseball.

Story of Mets
Phillies are lucky that it’s not like Mets.
Orel Saxhiser
Metsfans22, Early in the season, I pointed out to you that, over the last four seasons, the Mets have an average won/loss record of 77-85 per 162 games. Over the same period, the Dodgers have averaged 102-60. You assured me that 2021 would be different and that there was no way the Mets would be 25 games worse than the Dodgers. Here are the current records of the two teams:
Dodgers 99-55
Mets 73-80 (25.5 games behind)
So, what the heck happened? Please don’t use injuries as an excuse because the Dodgers have been hit harder in terms of lost WAR than the Mets.
MetsFan22
No they haven’t. The Mets are on top of dodgers in war lost.

Who is hurt in the Mets lineup right now and for the last month or so? Mostly healthy lineup, can’t score runs. They just aren’t good. deGrom injury was absolutely huge though.
Orel Saxhiser
Starting pitching is a wreck. Walker’s ERA is 7.73 since the all-star break. As important as deGrom is to their fortunes, good teams find a way to withstand it. Jack Flaherty. Chris Sale. Luis Severino. Tyler Glasnow. Mike Soroka. Lance Lynn. Justin Verlander. That’s seven injured aces whose teams have found a way to remain in the mix.
VonPurpleHayes
Exactly. Players get hurt all the time. Depth and resilance determines a lot. The Mets showed that early on, but there lineup isn’t enough. Now their starting pitching holes are showing, they cannot hot, and their bullpen, which I think is good, is overworked and underperforming. Braves plugged holes at the trade deadline. Mets went for star power instead.

Ugh the typos. Let’s pretebd I didn’t say anything. I hate the Android app.

Mr. Burns: “Simpson, can’t you go five seconds without embarrassing yourself?”
(Abe’s pants fall down)
Abe Simpson: “How long was that?”
skarbekb
Agree. All bullpens are thin and terrible. It is going to come down who has the strongest bandaids.
Bill Kane
They need Ranger to throw a lot of innings today. Their bullpen is in shambles with Neris throwing 40 pitches last night and Kennedy almost 30.
Ronk325
Pretty wild how Ranger threw a complete game shutout after you made this comment
DarkSide830
if you told me three Phils would throw a CGSHO today and none of them was Eflin, idve said you were crazy. yet here we are.
MetsFan22
Ik the Phillies have a better record but thank god the Mets are in the position future wise that the Phillies are in.
pinstripes17
Lol! The delusion is real.
Orel Saxhiser
The youngest player on the current Mets roster is Megill, who turned 26 on July 28. What the farm system might provide in the future is a huge question mark.
Regardless of what MetsFan22 thinks, they are not a young team with a bright future. The starting pitching outlook for 2022 is a disaster. All-world deGrom will be 34 and who knows about his health. Carrasco will be 35, ditto regarding health. Syndergaard (more health issues) and Stroman are free agents and might not return. Meanwhile, the trio of Walker, Peterson and Magill haven’t demonstrated they can be quality MLB starters over a full season. I’m pretty sure Rich Hill isn’t in the plans.
Quality starting pitching is essential to winning and the Mets don’t have it. No comment on the offense and bullpen.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
In fairness to Walker, I think you can credit at least some of his struggles to just wearing down from having pitched so little over the previous three seasons. To be clear, I still blame the Mets for continuing to run him out there and seemingly not being concerned about that issue, and I don’t think you can assume his early season success wasn’t a fluke either.
Everything else you said is spot-on though. When you look at their system, they certainly have some promising pieces on the offensive side, they’re far weaker in terms of pitching, and especially in terms of guys who are likely to be called up before mid-2023 at the earliest.
Orel Saxhiser
Kirk, point taken re Walker. I’ve always been a fan of his talent and he had to rebound from physical obstacles.
What the Mets need to do is create a 4-5 year window where they can contend and keep building from there. If that doesn’t include 2022 or even 2023, so be it. As for those guys who might be called up in ’23, that’s a reminder that watching a rebuild or retooling doesn’t have to be agony for fans. Sure, there might be more wins than losses. But there are positives in watching young players grow and improve as a unit. Fans will meanwhile feel great for sticking it out when the team gets to where it needs to get.
As a Dodger fan, I have been where Mets fans are now, starting with that horrendous 99-loss season in 1992. That was the ill-fated Darryl Strawberry-Eric Davis reunion with super-prospect Jose Offerman at SS, soon followed by Pedro Martinez and Paul Konerko being traded and eventually Mike Piazza. Year after year, we were told this season would be the year, though it never was and deep down we knew it. In fact, it wasn’t until Andrew Friedman came on board in 2014 that a proper focus returned.
If the Mets use a more realistic approach, they’ll be back in the mix before no time. But if they try to spend their way out of it this winter, they can conceivably turn into what the Orioles have become. Huge winter coming up for the organization. I sincerely hope they don’t try any shortcuts.

This is MetsFan22’s new MO. Come on MLBTR and post in division rival threads about how lucky that team is that they didn’t have as many underachievers as the Mets do.
VonPurpleHayes
I swear he’s also the miserable Braves fan guy.
VonPurpleHayes
Yes. The dominant ace that can’t stay healthy and a bunch of hitters who severely regressed. They’ll need to spend a ton of money in FA signings and/or Qualifying Offers just to build a decent starting rotation. Bright future for the Mets for sure.
I think the Mets and Phillies will both be fine because they’ll both spend money to plug holes, but saying the Mets future looks bright right now is ridiculous. They’re going to clean house. We don’t even know if deGrom will ever be good again.
Orel Saxhiser
The Mets need to step back, rethink, and rebuild. Bright future? That’s not likely due to the questionable makeup of their front office. Put it this way. Sandy Alderson turns 74 in November. That’s not someone you want overseeing a needed overhaul that will take a few years. What’s in it for him?
SalaryCapMyth
“I swear he’s also the miserable Braves fan guy.”
Mind equals blown. <=O
That just can't be true. There would be so much reality denial shoved into such a small amount of space that I'm pretty sure the Universe would wink out of existence.
Orel Saxhiser
The most miserable fan of all 30 teams is one person whose objective is to keep the pot stirring. It’s a full-time job that pays exceedingly well.
Rsox
Imagine if Trevor Bauer had signed with the Mets? Bauer’s legal issues (if they were to have happened in New York) would be top of the excuse list.
The Mets are a mess from the front office to the field. Cohen thinks throwing money around is going to help but the Mets need more than just deep pockets
SalaryCapMyth
This is so. I still think Cohen is good for the Mets but this is going to take longer than anyone thought. Some of us, myself included, treated Cohen like he was some magic solution to the Mets problems but now we can all see that the Mets problems have been much deeper than that well before Cohen got involved.
Orel Saxhiser
Don’t forget Cohen was a minority partner in the Wilpon ownership. He would do his team a huge favor if he stepped out of the spotlight and stopped trying to portray himself as Mr. Hero. . My guess is that he won’t be able to do it.
SportsFan0000
Phillies control their own destiny. Just win most of their remaining games (if not all).
Then, 3 with Atlanta
Phillies have the team to tie or pass the Braves in the standings.
There could be a one game playoff with the Braves if the Phils and Braves tie for the Division.
VonPurpleHayes
Phillies win the tie breaker actually.
Orel Saxhiser
A key will be whether either team has to use Wheeler or Fried just to get to the tiebreaker. Jeepers, that was a gem Fried tossed in San Diego last night. Granted, the Padres seem to be going through the motions.
VonPurpleHayes
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t it come down to head to head record and intradivision record first? Phillies are ahead in both categories as of now. I don’t think a tiebreaker game will need to be played
posty
You are wrong… A tiebreaker game for the division would be played with the H2H determining who has home field…
google.com/amp/s/www.mlb.com/amp/news/mlb-playoff-…
Orel Saxhiser
Correct, like Game #163 between the Dodgers and Rockies in 2018. The Dodgers hosted the game because they won the season series.
VonPurpleHayes
Ohhh that’s right. Thank you kindly. I mean I fully expect the Braves to win outright, but I did forget the tiebreaker rules.
Orel Saxhiser
Are you watching Braves-Padres? Braves down 7-3, bottom 5. The Phillies have a real chance. Wheeler on Tuesday, Nola on Wednesday. That would mean Wheeler in Game #162 on Sunday and Nola in #163 against Morton (the game would be in Philly, so maybe I’ll go). Suarez has been a season-saver, hasn’t he?
VonPurpleHayes
I am. Braves tied it quickly. The thing is, the Braves play the Mets who have completely given up and shown no signs of pride. The Phillies play the Marlins who consistently plsy spoiler every year. Phils definitely have a shot, but I think the Braves got this thing.
Orel Saxhiser
Flipping between Dodgers, Giants and Phils. I need a couple of more computers.
Both the Braves and Phillies control their own destiny. Those three games against each other are colossal and great for the game.
The key weekend game for the Phils will be Friday when Suarez faces Alcantara. Then it’s Luzardo-Medina and Rogers-Wheeler. It won’t be easy but the Phils have a shot.
Projected Braves-Mets matchups are Ynoa-Carrasco, Chavez-Williams, and Anderson-Stroman.
SportsFan0000
Their is a tie breaker game that must be played. It is not automatic just by finishing in a tie according to MLB rules for this year.
DarkSide830
Dohy cant even play in AAA. why not Adams?
