TODAY: Ryley Westman has been promoted from director of player development to farm director, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel (Twitter link). Amateur scouting director Mark Conner has also been reassigned to a special assistant role, as international scouting director Chris Kemp will now assume Conner’s old duties.
SEPTEMBER 21: The Padres have decided not to renew the contract of farm director Sam Geaney, reports Dennis Lin of the Athletic. Geaney departs the organization after spending nearly seven years leading the club’s minor league system.
Geaney was hired in October 2014, just a couple months after the Padres tabbed A.J. Preller to lead baseball operations. The team made an ill-fated attempt to contend in Preller’s first year at the helm before committing to a significant teardown and rebuild. That process involved trading established big leaguers for prospects and a significant financial outlay in the international amateur market, leading to the construction of a farm system that was perhaps the game’s best for a couple years.
That rebuild began to bear fruit in 2019, when players like Fernando Tatís Jr. and Chris Paddack made their big league debuts. The team still struggled, but that changed in 2020. The Friars went 37-23 in last year’s shortened season, making the playoffs for the first time in fourteen years. In addition to bringing aboard talented young players like Tatís, Trent Grisham and Jake Cronenworth, Preller and the front office aggressively pursued star players in free agency and trade over the past few seasons. Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado had been brought aboard on huge free agent deals, while San Diego built a star-studded rotation via trade, landing Blake Snell, Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove (in addition to the since-injured Mike Clevinger) from other organizations.
That series of bold strikes had a few effects. It thinned out the once-vaunted farm system significantly. Luis Patiño, who went to the Rays in the Snell deal, was perhaps the only truly elite young talent sent away. But San Diego parted with a collection of generally well-regarded players, dealing a blow to the minor league depth. Still, that seemed a price worth paying to build a fantastic big league roster, and the Padres entered the 2021 campaign with extraordinarily high expectations.
Early in the season, San Diego looked well on their way to meeting those lofty goals. They won 32 of their first 50 games; by late May, their chances of making the postseason were approaching 99% in FanGraphs’ estimation. Things have changed dramatically since that high water mark, with the club particularly struggling coming out of the All-Star Break. The Padres have gone just 23-33 in the season’s second half, entering play tonight with a 76-73 record that places them four games behind the Cardinals in the race for the National League’s final Wild Card spot (with the Reds also a game above them in the standings). Their playoff chances — considered a near-lock a few months ago — have plummeted to 3.4%.
Given that collapse, there’s been plenty of speculation recently about potential staffing changes that would go beyond Geaney’s dismissal. Preller, who was promoted to president of baseball operations and extended through 2026 in February, doesn’t seem likely to be in much danger. But alterations to the coaching staff could be a more realistic possibility, and the team will at least have one notable coaching decision to make this coming offseason.
The Padres fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild on August 23, bumping bullpen coach Ben Fritz to the position on an interim basis. That hasn’t brought about any sort of immediate turnaround, as Padres hurlers rank just 22nd in ERA (4.90) and 15th in SIERA (4.20) since making the change. This winter, they’ll need to determine whether to hand the job to Fritz permanently.
Recent days have also brought about some speculation regarding second-year manager Jayce Tingler’s future in the organization. Over the weekend, Ken Rosenthal, Lin and Britt Ghiroli of the Athletic and Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune separately reported that Tingler, whose contract runs through 2022, is facing increased scrutiny within the clubhouse. Both outlets report that some members in the organization have questioned whether Tingler — a 40-year-old skipper in his first managerial job — has done enough to command the respect of the locker room.
Clubhouse frustration boiled over publicly on Saturday, when Tatís engaged in respective shouting matches in the dugout with bench coach Bobby Dickerson and Machado. Tingler had previously been ejected from the game, and development coach Ryan Flaherty intervened to break up the argument.
It’s certainly no surprise that frustration is mounting in the organization, given the manner in which the team’s play has fallen off. But Rosenthal, Lin and Ghiroli suggested some with the team see the spat as a microcosm of a broader leadership void. Acee, meanwhile, reported that some members of the clubhouse have desired Tingler’s dismissal for a while — and would continue to do so even if the team rights the ship and manages an improbable playoff push over the season’s final couple weeks. Both pieces present a detailed look into a seemingly messy situation and are worth full perusals.
Despite that reported discord, it’s by no means a fait accompli that Tingler’s managing his final few games in San Diego. Acee cautions that some players in the clubhouse still stick by the skipper, instead expressing frustration with what they believe to be other players’ excuses for the team’s underperformance. Both the Athletic and the Union-Tribune note that Preller and Tingler, who previously worked together in the Rangers’ front office, are very close personal friends, leading some to question whether Preller would be willing to dismiss Tingler.
It’s also impossible to pin down precisely how much blame Tingler actually deserves for the team’s struggles. As mentioned, the Padres were quite successful last season, Tingler’s first at the helm. This year, the roster has been hit hard by injuries, particularly on the pitching side. Clevinger was lost to a Tommy John surgery over the offseason. Fifth starter Adrián Morejón required the same procedure in April. Darvish, Paddack and Snell have all missed some amount of time due to injury; Paddack and Snell remain on the IL. Top prospect MacKenzie Gore, expected to be a potential big league option entering the season, struggled significantly in the minors and hasn’t proven ready for a call-up.
That’s led the Padres to look for buy-low pickups in recent weeks, with the team signing Jake Arrieta and Vince Velasquez after they’d been released by other clubs. That came on the heels of a trade deadline in which the front office failed to bolster the rotation, despite reported pursuits of Max Scherzer and José Berríos. (Arrieta was designated for assignment this evening after struggling over four starts).
The Friars weren’t completely inactive. They landed second baseman Adam Frazier and reliever Daniel Hudson only to see those players’ performances unexpectedly crater. But this extremely aggressive front office’s inability to land any rotation help was one of the more surprising takeaways immediately after the deadline, and it’s proven to be a significant storyline for the team in the second half.
For now, the Padres have tried to tamp down speculation about the future as they focus on the season’s final couple weeks. Tingler pushed back on the idea that he’d lost the respect of the clubhouse when speaking with reporters (including Bob Nightengale of USA Today) this evening. Machado and Tatís conducted a joint press conference tonight in which they claimed they’ve put Saturday’s incident behind them (video from Annie Heilbrunn of the Union-Tribune). It seems unlikely there’ll be any significant shakeup in San Diego while the season’s ongoing, but the Padres’ staffing decisions could prove to be one of the more important things to watch in the early portion of the upcoming offseason.
Rangers29
Umm, Tingler can come manage the Rangers whenever he wants. I’ve heard good things about him, and I’m not placing the blame of this 2015-esque free-fall on him. The main thing was the pitching just absolutely craping the bed this season, and that’s not something to blame Tingler for. He’s been added to a list of him, Jeff Mathis, and Rick Renteria as guys that I’d like to see the Rangers replace Woodward with.
MetsFan22
Rangers have some nice prospects coming up soon
Rangers29
Jung man!
TheRealMilo
There’s a black hole in the Ranger’ s farm system above AA. They can’t develop players past that point. Jung and Leiter may escape this, as they are mostly already developed at the college level. But, post 2015 the Ranger’s talking point has been farm level quantity over quality. That quantity hasn’t arrived 6 years later and under current management, most likely never will.
larry48
Tingler win ruin them just like he did in San Diego.
paddyo furnichuh
@Rangers29….Are you thinking Woodward is not a good manager? His record is bad during the rebuild. I’m curious if he’s made bad moves that were questionable in real time or more questionable in hindsight. I’m actually asking and not trying to argue-I don’t watch the Ranger games.
beyou02215
Tingled has made some strange decisions this year – Like using Musgrove in a game where the Padres were down 7-0. Not saying it’s all his fault, but he has made some head-scratching missteps.
Enrico Pallazzo
You can have him. Terrible leader and also just so disgusting to have to look at night in and night out. Dude looks like he’s been training to win a honey baked ham lookalike contest for the past 3 years. It’s called sunscreen my man. It’s ok to put some on your gross face from time to time.
rangers13
Those would be good choices. Rangers 29 what is your early prognostication for next years opening day line up and rotation.
Rangers29
Rotation:
I see Hearn, Dunning, and Howard as locks. Why Howard? Well, he was thrashed in Philly, so just getting him on a consistent schedule again is going to do wonders. Plus, he even said that he’s just working on different things in the last few weeks of this season, he’s not this bad normally, he’s just working on stuff right now. Essentially like ST for him. I think he comes out of the gate ready next season.
As for additions, I think we see another 3 for 30 guy, and I think that’s gonna be E-Rod. Still young, better numbers the further you look, and could easily be on this team when we’re good again.
Then… maybe a Kershaw? It’s not outrageous, especially if it’s a “finish your career here” type deal. Just a thought… Sugano is more realistic though.
Give me this rotation for opening day:
E-Rod
Sugano
Dunning
Hearn
Howard
As for offense… Kris Bryant and Nick Castellanos?
We need a big bat, and Casty would be just that. Especially since he lacks L/R splits.
Then put Bryant in LF since he’s on of the younger – potential – left fielders on the market.
I think 2nd base just might be filled out by Ibanez, and if not you can move Jung to 2B, Bryant to 3B, and Calhoun to the OF. But as for Ibanez, he has a 130 OPS+ and .870 OPS over his last 40 games… with no BABIP luck. He’s great.
Lineup looks something like so:
Taveras CF
Bryant 3B
Castellanos DH
Jung 3B
Ibanez 2B
Lowe 1B
Garcia RF
Huff/Trevino/Heim C
IKF SS
rangers13
The only spots I had differently were Rodon instead of Sugano and Alexy a slight edge over Howard. I completely agree with Ibanez at 2b, Bryant in left, and Castellanos the DH. I wonder if Texas would consider packaging Peters, Solak, and Trevino + Evans for Contreras with the Cubs or Lopez or Hernandez from Miami and if either of those would make that trade.
Pads Fans
When you lose the respect of your players and they quit on you, then you are a failure as a manager. That describes Tingler perfectly.
Of course, an organization with a history of dismal failure like the Rangers probably would hire Tingler as a manager.

Money must be tight down San Diego way, what with the big contracts and all. I mean, “amateur scouting director Mark Conner”.? Wassupwiddat?
In a first class organization, that sort of job is filled by a professional.

Mets22: Thanks for the incredibly vivid reminder of the Cards spanking the Mets – man, you just can’t hold those Red Birds down, even if Baez only makes a couple base running/throwing snafus, and Lindy hits .222.
Plus, that O’Neill kid? Whoa, what a player he’s going to be! He treated Citi Field like a little league park…
Cosmo2
Braves, Cardinals: two organizations that are consistently better than the Mets year after year… I think it’s a little more to do with than just one years worth of injury totals.
Yankee Clipper
Yep, Braves and Cards are winning cultures. Their fan bases have expectations similar to NY fans in that way. I really enjoy watching both beat up on the Mets. And Freeman? Talk about class — that guy is a quiet, humble, leader and his actions after he got beaned support that. Then he followed up with an excellent press conference when questioned about it.
Mets22 talks about injuries?! Braves are just as, if not moreso, hampered by injuries to their players. For example, they lost one of their MVPs (Acuna) for the season, and they’re still contending for a spot.

Padres are #1 in player games lost to injuries. Mets are 2nd. Blue Jays are 3rd.

With Preller under contract another five years, perhaps they play to bring in a GM who will be given authority to make some hires including farm director? Did Geaney have contract provision requiring the team to let him know if it would be renewed by a date certain and they knew a new GM might not want to renew it? Perhaps Preller, with his contract extension, wanted to cut ties with Geaney. Just some guesses
Pads Fans
As the Director of Player DEVELOPMENT Geaney has been a dismal failure. His job was to get Padres prospects prepared to play at the MLB level. He was unable to do so. Not one prospect drafted or signed by the Padres since the 2015 season has put up a 2.0 WAR or higher (that is been an average or better MLB player) for the Padres. Only 2 have done so after leaving the Padres.
Pads Fans
I was mistaken. Geaney wasn’t the Director of Player Development. That position was held by Ryley Westman. Westman was the first guy that Preller hired away from the sad sack Rangers. Now he is taking Geaney’s place as Farm Director. Padres situation apparently just went from bad to worse in the minors.
outinleftfield
That position is responsible for getting prospects trained so they can succeed in the major leagues. Not many players made it through the Padres system and have become god in the majors. Only ones I can think of that were drafted or signed by Preller and gang and taught by Geaney were Quantrill and France and neither of them play for the Padres anymore. That would indicate to me that Geaney is bad at the job he was tasked with.
amk1920
Preller is the most overrated exec in baseball before the season and now even the media who hyped him up sees it. Mass quantity of trades doesn’t automatically make your team good. All it accomplished was acquiring players who don’t move the needle while destroying their farm system depth. Some Padre fans really tried to tell us with a straight face that Preller didn’t trade anyone significant or that constantly trading recent top draft picks is a sustainable way to do business. Even his “best” moves don’t look so hot anymore. Paddack is nothing special. Urias and Lauer have more value than Grisham at this point. He threw 340 million at Tatis when he still had 4 years of team control. Also trading Trea Turner’s complete team control cancels out the Tatis acquisition win. And don’t forget his laughable 2015 attempt at winning or completely whiffing on multiple rookie managers while also allowing Dave Roberts to be a staple in the dugout at Dodger Stadium. Farhan built a much better team without even dipping into the Giants payroll space. Preller isn’t in the same universe as Friedman or Zaidi and should be fired for 7 years of incompetence.
Cosmo2
Yea. Zaidi is the real deal. Preller took what could have been a great rebuild and somehow effed it up.
ChunkyMonkey
Zaidi is a great baseball mind. But if we’re being honest, even he didn’t expect to get the types of contributions and health he’s gotten from the likes Posey, Crawford, and the other older players that have managed to play above expectations.
bucsfan0004
Don’t forget about Patino. And Franmil Reyes. Seems like the Padres would really like to have those guys back. Trading just to trade. Fun.
Faith in the Padres
Patino has a 4.73era/4.63 FIP this year in 70+ innings. Idk how much help he would have been. Plus Snell replaced Patino in the rotation so not sure how they’d miss him.
dodgerfan83
He would have been better than arrieta or Vince Velasquez
Pads Fans
More help than Weathers has been. Or than Arrieta or Velasquez or Camarena or Knehr.
Snell was terrible until his blow up with Rothschild in early August in Oakland. A blow up that not surprisingly led to Rothschild being canned
Patino is still only 21 years old. He will get much better and be missed.
Snell is what Snell is and always has been. A 4+ ERA starter that goes 5 innings max most games and get hurt every year. Yes, he occasionally has an absolutely incredible start, but he usually follows that up with 2 or 3 really bad ones. Since they are stuck with him the Padres better hope that the 25 starts they get from him next season are more like the ones he pitched after Rothschild was fired than the ones that preceded that.
outinleftfield
Re-watched that game in Oakland and what came out of Snell’s mouth was funny. You didn’t have to be a lipreader to see all the f-bombs he dropped on Rothschild before storming down the hallway to the locker room. Snell got 27 starts before going down with an injury this season so be fair. 27 starts of 4.20 ERA is not that bad. He is a good back of the rotation starter until he gets hurt. Padres fans will take that all day long. Hopefully those incredible starts are all against the Dodgers.
Faith in the Padres
Right. Cause Patino would pitch his spot in the rotation like Snell did and paddacks or darvishs or whoever landed on the injured list. He’s just that good. Right. Not sure how having patino would make up for other pitchers getting injured since the All Star Break
TheRealMilo
Preller was the right-hand-man of Jon Daniels with the dumpster fire that is the Texas Rangers. The Padres may be following the same disastrous path as the Rangers – long term contract to a GM that flukeishly smoke-and-mirrors it for a season or two but whose incompetence ultimately sinks a franchise for a decade. I still can’t figure out why anyone in their right mind would look at the Rangers and say to themselves – let’s follow this blueprint.

I found it amusing last year when many Jays fans wanted to follow SD’s lead and go nuts with high profile signings and trades . Timing is everything when coming out of a rebuild.

Bruce Bochy on line One!
Yankee Clipper
No! He’s going to the Yankees – ink is just drying now.
notagain27
I might be wrong but I think Bochy is too laid back for all the shenanigans in NY. Loved his time with the Padres and I see him as a West Coast guy.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, you’re probably right, but Boone defends Sanchez wiffing behind the plate and creating extra outs that facilitate losing games. At least Bochy has the fundamentals down.
bitterpadresfan
Is Bochy going to be as effective if he can’t use 5 relievers every inning? I always liked him but I feel like every game that he manages lasts about 2 hours longer than MLB average.
Cosmo2
Too laid back for NY? Joe Torre begs to differ.
dodger1958
Torre is a born and bred New Yorker. He knew the city very well.
As to other comments about Bochy. He quit due to health issues.
He has hall of fame written all over him.
He already left the Padres once.
Why would he want to return to a dumpster fire of a mismanaged Padre organization? Makes no sense,

Tingler is a micro manager. Messes with the lineup constantly. Had Frazier batting cleanup for several games. He should lead off followed by Cron, Tatis, and Machado. Grisham, Myers, Nola, and Pham. Work Hosmer in and out of it. He also uses Adams way too much for relief. They need help if they’re going to contend. Next year.
Angels & NL West
I’m not defending Tingler because I don’t know enough about him to say, but I do know that managers do not make out lineups in isolation. They receive input from the analytics staff in baseball ops. Same for mapping out the nights bullpen plan.
dan55
I think Tingler should be fired, but to be fair, all of the issues you have pointed out were also issues with Andy Green. It’s possible these problems come from the front office.
bucsfan0004
Tingler makes the lineups? Highly unlikely.

Padres also lost Dinelson Lamet to injury.
Yankee Clipper
Seems an unduly harsh article for this team and here are my top three reasons:
1) Yes, their system was somewhat depleted for trades, but other elite talent graduated to the majors. Only the Rays seem to sustain perpetual elite talent in the Farm, whereas every other team is cyclical.
2) This is their first year truly going for it, which resulted in the aforesaid trades. Look at the 90s Braves…most times it takes a few years of competing in the postseason with a great team to win just one. I get it, they won’t make it this year, but how often do two 100-team winners come out of the same division, and who could’ve predicted the Giants run the table?
3) Injuries…and although I love Larry, he’s not known (at least on the Yankees side) for taking pitching staffs to a higher level of excellence. As an aside, isn’t Adam Frazier still playing decent defense and hitting over .300? He’s no slouch. Artietta was a flier, like many teams have taken due to injuries this epoch.
Honestly, I could see this (or one more harsh) written of the Yankees regression, both this year and over the course of the past four, but it seems it rings of knee-jerk or premature decision making if big changes are to come based solely on this one season.
Cosmo2
Preller blew it. He lost patience and made too many trades and now the Pods are underachieving disappointments instead of up and coming.
Yankee Clipper
I certainly see your points and they are valid. But, the team is there, well-established and ready for at least a few seasons to come.
They’re going to be a problem for LAD and SF because I think they will only get better. I’m not as familiar with Preller as you all, I was referring to the statement about sweeping changes, which I think is premature. One or two may certainly my be justified.
My Yankees may very well need sweeping changes here soon. Too long in the rut.
dodger1958
The Dodgers farm system seems to consistently develop talent. Some are traded some remain. Just compare how many NL ROYs the Dodgers have developed versus other teams in the NL.
bucsfan0004
Understatement of the century. The Dodgers have had the best scouting/player development in the history of professional sports.
Pads Fans
The injuries were foreseeable if you were paying attention. Darvish and Snell both have a history of injuries. Neither has finished a season since 2018 with Darvish averaging just 75% of his possible starts the last 5 seasons including 2021 and Snell under 70%. The Padres counted on Lamet, a player that has never had a full season not marred by injury, to carry a large load. That is 2/3 of the rotation that you knew would be injured a significant portion of the season based on their history.
Frazier is hitting .265 with a .629 PS with the Padres. He is not even playing every day. That was a huge mistake. Although the Padres could rectify that mistake by trading him in the offseason to fill areas of need like starting pitching.
outinleftfield
The Padres have more player games on the IL than any other team so I don’t think its fair to say that all of them were foreseeable. Maybe for Darvish and Snell because you are right that those two get injured every year, but not to the extent that the Padres got crushed by injuries.
JoeBrady
outinleftfield
The Padres have more player games on the IL
=====================================
I question the quality of those injuries.
On offense, they mostly missed Tatis, and that was only maybe 20-25 games.
In their rotation, using 32 starts as the baseline, they lost Musgrave (0), Darvish (2), Snell (3), Paddack (8), and Lamet (23).
It’s not that much different than a lot of other teams.
outinleftfield
I am talking about man games on the IL. No way to underestimate that.
Snell and Paddack are out for the season so you need to increase that number of missed starts and the baseline should be 33, not 32.. Lamet will not make any more starts either, so that is another few starts you are missing from your totals.
You are also forgetting Clevinger, Strahm, Morejon, and Baez just among potential starters who missed all or the majority of the season. In relief you have Castillo, Altavilla, Williams, Pomeranz, Kela, Altavilla, and Wingenter that were all out all or a majority of the season.
Padres had the most man games lost to injuries.

I thought Machado showed incredible maturity by putting Tatis in check – that’s what leaders of teams do, and on occasion, it happens in the dugout. And frankly, Machado has the experience & pedigree to check down Tatis, who is the face of the entire MLB right now.

Serious Dark Horse candidate for me would be Henry Blanco. Bullpen coach for the Nationals. Former big league catcher. 16 year career. From Venezuela. Has some managerial experience having coached in the Venezuelan league back in 2014-2015, however you want to quantify that.

My first thought was Scoscia is as well. A reputable veteran manager seems like the right move at this point. I could see Bochy, Baker or Maddon as well. Nothing against Tingler specifically but I do think the young manager angle is way over-rated at the MLB level.
Yankee Clipper
I just read an article that suggested Tony Pena, another good option imho. He was the bench coach under Girardi and did a good job overall. Plus…. He was a catcher.
prov356
Scioscia was good in the first half of his career with the Angels, but something happened and he lost his touch. Rumors were he gained too much power from Moreno and butted heads with GMs, especially Dipoto. Plus Moreno stopped valuing pitching which makes a team hard to manage for anyone. Maybe he can resurface on a new team like the Padres and make it work. I like him as a manager.

You do realize Baker and Maddon have jobs and aren’t getting fired? Bochy though is the logical choice and he loves the area, especially the fishing.

Schumaker is part of the coaching staff with the Padres now that is getting no respect from the players. While he might make a good manager some day, their team needs a complete change of staff in coaching.
Washington will never get a managing job again. 2 strikes for things that make it hard for anyone to follow him as their leader. No respect there.
Bochy. Showalter. Scioscia. That is the kind of veteran that it would take. Maybe even Sandy Alomar from the Indians who has been managing that team most of the year.
outinleftfield
In my opinion the Padres have to make some changes and that starts with the manager and extends to anyone now in the dugout. If the Padres once again go with an inexperienced manager I would like to see either Alomar or Nevin.

I don’t follow the Padres but when I heard Tingler admonished Tatis for hitting a Grand Slam, I thought he should have been fired then.

Buck Showalter is the prefect boss. Sit down and SHUT UP!
When it was a game.
10 years ago 100%. With everyone having to use analytical data him and the last of the go with your gut managers are obsolete.
Pads Fans
Showalter was one of the first of the analytical managers. That was the knock on him.
outinleftfield
Players hated Buck for that. He would say this is what the stats say and this is what you are going to do. Maybe he has learned how to get that info to the players in a way that they don’t get their feathers all in a ruffle. Maybe the game has changed enough that he can just say “here are the stats, so do this” without the players getting ticked.
Pads Fans
The game is shifting more and more to analytics driving instruction so you are probably right that players would just take that direction from him without squawking now. Hopefully he learned some about how to teach them to use that info too.

Letting Preller gut the farm system, then firing the Farm Director when the big league roster fails, absolutely screams scapegoat. Firing someone for the sake of firing them, with no real purpose.
“No real purpose” should be the Padres second half motto.
larry48
Padre’s minor leagues suck, look at the ML roster even if you count Tatis. He is the only player from the Padres system draft pick. Why is that they can’t develop player look at all the player that gets traded away by Padres 2 years later they look really good. Padres don’t work with players in minors I read the dodgers work one on one with every play from rookie thru AAA and when they are called up they are ready.

Watching the SD/SF game now and I’m surprised Tingler let Musgrove pitch the last inning.

Maybe the padres should fire the gm
Preller put this team together. Very few of the padres were drafted by the padres. Aquired in free agency and trades. Leaving the farm depleted.
Cosmo2
He very well might get fired. Patience, grasshopper.
LordD99
Agreed, but I think it will take a lot of patience. They just promoted Preller to PoBO and extended him through 2026 this year. He probably has at least 2022 to get the tramback on the right track.
LordD99
* team back* on the right track.

He would not be the first nor the last GM to be fired with 4 years left on their deal. GMs make less on a 5 year deal than a decent middle reliever does on a 1 year deal.
Yep it is
Jon Daniels who is one of the WORST GM’s/ Presidents in all of baseball who has never had a vision on how to build a club or any kind of direction and you hire his Understudy and expect anything to be different? How many years do both of the guys get. Several years in and NOTHING TO SHOW FOR EITHER CLUB. Preller has ruined a good farm system and zero to show for it and now they fire the main guy who got them there? Complete ignorance on the owners behalf.
dave frost nhlpa
Surprised they didn’t go after J A Happ.

There were several vets like Happ that got moved at the trade deadline. It would have been smart for Preller to be negotiating with them in case he didn’t get Scherzer.

And I know he sees this comment.
Tom the ray fan
Preller is so overrated. Sure he built the best farm system in the league but all he did ultimately was trade it away. His 2015 showing should’ve given the Padres fair warning to.get him out. He’s been giving a budget higher than probably every team but 3-5 of them and they might not even break 500. Tatis obviously was a great trade but really that’s it and I guess maybe Musgrove? Hosmer & meyers big $ yikes. Idk for the Padres to be letting go all of coaches/staff to me it all goes back to preller but what do I know. Go rays thanks for taking the headache of snell off our hands!
LordD99
So the farm director who built up the Padres system to the best in the game at one point, a farm that Preller then used to fuel a series of trades, is at fault? The man at the top is at fault. Geaney will be hired by another club quickly.
VegasSDfan
Farm development is an issue. Guys go from top 100 talent, to 4A talent. There is a pattern with this.
We also consistently trade the better prospects and keep guys that under perform.

And for all the talk about their farm, their current team is mostly outsiders.

Outsiders acquired because they had a strong farm. They fired the wrong guy!

Max Fried wasn’t the same trade as Turner. He was in the Justin Upton trade. Turner was in the Myers trade.

A number of these have certainly flourished on teams giving them the playing time, like Tampa. That organization is amazing in that they’ll take Margot, Renfro, Patino, mix them in with other players from within and just keep winning on a low budget. year after year which is why I like Padres getting rid of their farm director. Margot, Renfro, Mejia, Lauer, Lucchesi, as well as Tatis came from other organizations, Padres have never been known as developers of talent. Never. Cronenworth, Nola, Grisham, Machado, Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Profar, Pham, Myers, Hosmer, none from Padres organization. Some good, some not so good, but the entire starting lineup not home grown? Pathetic.

I believe that is 22.6 WAR, while I believe that the player in the trades with the guys above, have accumulated 15.5 WAR.
But my argument is that, without a single trade, they’d have been just as good, but a lot younger, with more control, and able to retain maybe 10-15 prospects that came in those trades, but haven’t made the pros yet. And, of course, a pretty fair amount of salary.
outinleftfield
A minimum of 5 guys from the list of players traded away would have had to go to clear room on the 40 man roster for other prospects. Some of those guys like Lucchesi, Naylor, and Margot were expendable, below league average players.
JoeBrady
Margot is at least a league-average CF. with an OPS+ of 101, with good fielding skills. Lucchesi was pitching very well in his last 5 starts before getting hurt.
But even after you eliminate Lucchesi & Naylor, the ex-Padres still have a 22.4 bWAR, while their replacements still have a 15.5 bWAR.
And the point still stands that, if you gave me their 22.4 WAR at $10-15M, I could probably field a 95-win team with another $185M to spend.
Pads Fans
You are missing his point. 5 guys had to go away because of 40 man roster crunch no matter what.
Lucchesi had a 4.46 ERA and then got injured this season. When he was traded he had a 7.9 ERA in his 2 starts in the majors and had spent most of the season in the minors. Would not have helped the 2021 Padres whose biggest problem was injuries to the pitching staff. His replacement as the #3 starter in 2021 was Musgrove. Who would you rather have in your rotation?
Naylor would not have helped the 2021 Padres. No place to play. Not a good player.
Margot had an 87 OPS+ in 3 full seasons with the Padres. No great loss on offense. He has 19 DRS the past 2 seasons. Grisham has been a 110 OPS+ player for the Padres. He has 22 DRS the past 2 seasons. Not a single Padre fan will miss Margot.
Not really a big fan of WAR unless you are comparing career totals, but since you did, let’s use those for the 2021 season.
Padres additions I can remember off the top of my head since 2019 season.
Grisham – 2.6 bWAR
Cronenworth – 4.7 bWAR
Pham – 1.5 bWAR
Nola – 0.9 bWAR
Kim – 2.0 bWAR
Frazier – 0.7 bWAR
That is 18.4 bWAR just in position players
Darvish – 1.4 bWAR
Snell – 1.4 bWAR
Musgrove – 3.3 bWAR
Melancon – 1.8 bWAR
Weathers – 0.2 bWAR
Johnson – 1.0 bWAR
Crismatt – 0.7 bWAR
Pomeranz – 0.7 bWAR
9.5 bWAR there
About 28 bWAR for the replacements.
In terms of who left and who he brought in, Preller did pretty good on the bWAR side of things.
Pads Fans
The problem was that Preller brought in high priced starting pitchers that had a history of being injury prone and mediocre performance.
Darvish had a 3.70 ERA the past 5 seasons and only made about 70% of possible starts.
Other than the obvious outlier season, Snell had a 4.00 ERA, only went 4.73 IP/start, and made less than 70% of his possible starts over his career.
It was a mistake to believe that they could anchor the rotation and make 60-65 starts between them.
Pads Fans
Sorry. Lucchesi spent that time in 2020 at the alternate training facility, not the minors.
JoeBrady
I’m not talking about ALL the acquisitions, just the trades. If you take off Kim, Melancon. Weathers, Johnson, and Crismart, then the replacement WAR is back down to 21.6 bWAR. The guys you gave up would’ve given you the same bWAR at a far lower cost.
The ERA for Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove is 3.86. The ERA for Patino, Lauer and Quantrill is 3.28.
Grisham & Margot are = in WAR/PA
Mejia > Nola in WAR and WAR/PA
Urias > Frazier
Reyes >>> Pham
Cronenworth is the only player you are ahead on.
sdpadsfan11
Joe Brady—the player I’ll miss most out of that group is Quantrill. The majority of that group is all bat and no glove (Naylor, Reyes, France, Mejia) and that is why they were traded Al teams. The Padres need to stop trading with Cleveland, and Preller needs to stop making foolish decisions at the trade deadline.
JoeBrady
Back when Betts was on the block, I wanted Quantrill badly. He didn’t quite hit the ground running, so I figured that Preller might be looking to sell cheap. I figured Margot could be had for almost nothing, Since Betts would’ve taken over CF for you guys, and I like Margot as a mediocre but cheap CF. And you guys had 14 guys with a 45 FV or better, and we might’ve had 3. Preller could’ve taken Gore, Patino, Campusana & Abrams off the table, and included 3 of the better 45’s, and we’d have run with it.
You guys even had graduated prospects like Urias, Lauer, Lucchesi, Naylor and France who were downgraded, but still pretty interesting.
I’m fine with the LAD package, but I really thought we were going to fleece you. Even taking off the premium guys, you guys had unbelievable depth.

Minor leage director is a scape goat and GM and Mgr should be fired.I hope the Phillies interview Sam Geany for their minor league director.GM traded most for the minor league talent for overpaid under performing players.Good Luck and maybe think about hiring Bruce Bochy im sure you would then win a WS.

As a Cubs fan, very happy Preller is the GM of the Padres.

You should be. They knew to dump Darvish’s 60mil while they could coming off a shortened season against mostly bad NLC offenses. Most of your fellow fans were apoplectic…..couple of those teenagers they got back to develop among the 4 could make the deal even better.
JoeBrady
I remember that well. There were only a few brave souls that stuck up for the Cubs on that one. The constant, in regard to many fans, is that they would rather have a #50 prospect, in decline, than four 18 year old prospects ranked #125.
Randomuser4567
I remember Steve Adams was super harsh on the trade. Wonder if people would change their opinion after seeing Darvish be less valuable in twice as many innings from 2020 to 2021 and the Cubs showing that they weren’t real contenders, no matter how much some people think throwing some money at the team would have changed that.

**Also, forgot to not the injury to Dinelson Lamet that plagued him for a major chunk of time and now he’s back, but only as a reliever.
The Padres want to win obviously. They have a really good roster when healthy, but they have faced some big injuries this year and Snell wasn’t that good for most of the year; he did begin to pitch better but then got injured.
Pads Fans
Here is the problem with that line of thinking. Preller traded for and relied on pitchers with a lengthy history of injuries and several returning from lengthy injuries.
Darvish. Snell. Lamet. Strahm. To name a few.
He signed Arrieta and Velasquez instead of shooting for veteran inning eaters at the deadline as backups if he missed on Scherzer and Berrios. .
All the problems on the pitching staff go back to easily foreseeable problems that Preller caused by being blind to those issues.

They celebrated beating the Dodgers in May, and early June like it was the World Series. The baseball Gods were watching, apparently.
AshamedMethGoat
Yup. And while the Dodgers go on to win 100 games AGAIN, the Padres will again be playing golf the first week of October.
libertyfighter
While the Dodger payroll is almost $100 million higher than the next club, you Dodger fans smuggly look down on the Padres. Pure and simple, what ever Championships are won by the Dodgers, they buy all of them. The Dodgers payroll allows them to make personnel mistakes without repercussions, roll over key injuries without missing a beat. The Padres were smart not to unload their top 5 prospects this year, it’s not quite their time to go all in. Baseball is a funny sport in that a player can have a few down years and then play like an all-star.
No excuses for the Padres collapse in 2021, but they are not going anywhere, they will be right back in it in 2022. This next CBA will be interesting to see what salary cap penalties are instituted for exceeding the cap. The Dodgers start losing 3 draft picks a year until they comply with the salary cap will make the playing field more level.
JoeBrady
libertyfighter
Pure and simple, what ever Championships are won by the Dodgers, they buy all of them.
=============================================
How much have the LAD spent on free agents? Most of their payroll goes to retaining their own guys. Some of it goes to quasi-free agents like Betts & Price, but part of that was having prospects with which to trade. The Padres have done the same with guys like Darvish. The pure FA purchases by the LAD is in the range of $68M.
The Padres spent $84M on the pure free agent portion of their roster.
AshamedMethGoat
libertyfighter, your analysis of how the Dodgers got to be where they are has been disproved time again, but it’s funny how the myth of the Dodgers “buying” championships persists.
The fact is, the Padres have behaved much like the Dodgers,. signing free agents like Hosmer ($144 million) and Machado ($300 million) while trading farm system assets for big-ticket upgrades like Clevinger, Musgrove, and Snell. Yet, no one is accusing San Diego of trying to “buy” championships.
Now, as you pointed out, the Padres can’t make personnel mistakes on big contracts like Hosmer, and that likely prevented them from making a significant deal at this year’s deadline because of the need to unload Hosmer’s contract. While I can’t fault the Padres for “going for it”, it’s easy to question the wisdom of some of these transactions, given the finances of a smaller market team.
Of course, this is AJ Preller we’re talking about, and he’s smarter than the rest of us: Just ask him!
gcg27
San Diego should hire Showalter.. ridiculous he’s not a manager if he still wants to manage.. Mets or San Diego would be better off having him ad a skipper
SonnySteele
Must be the Padres didn’t have a good harvest this year. 😉
Pads Fans
Since firing Rothschild, the Padres starters that were with the team while he was there have a 3.24 ERA. Arrieta and Velasquez were terrible, but Snell, Darvish, Paddack, and Musgrove all pitched well or even better since he was fired.
As far as I can find, no prospect drafted or signed in International FA by the Padres since Preller took over the team have put up a 2.0 WAR or higher with the Padres. Quantrill has this season for the Indians. Ty France has with the Mariners.. That is a pretty dismal record of player scouting, selection, and development under Preller and Geaney.
It was time for a change and the change needs to continue with the ousting of Preller this offseason.
outinleftfield
I don’t think Preller had much of a choice than to sign Arrieta and Velasquez. His options in the minors were Camarena and Knehr.
Datashark
Team fails had nothing to do with farm system, that was going as fine as possible, this reeks of preller saving his job for what is his fault for not acquiring right players
Orel Saxhiser
It’s time to revisit those years when the Padres farm system was considered the best in baseball. Aside from Tatis, where is the evidence on their Major League roster? Year after year, the Dodgers have drafted far behind the Padres in every round of the amateur draft. Yet the Dodgers have proven to be way better at cranking out MLB talent. Why is that?
In my opinion, if a team needs to make several major transactions over a year, they probably aren’t ready to contend. I notice those types of suggestions on a Texas Rangers thread. No number of free-agent signings will magically transform a rebuilding team into a contender. Yet some fans insist the Rangers make the same kinds of mistakes as the Padres and Mets. That’s not how you build a winner. Those fans need to realize that, as do pre-season prognosticators for various publications. On this date, those 2021 predictions involving the Padres and Mets don’t look good.
claude raymond
Cey Hey, for the reasons you stated, I’m hoping the giants don’t get carried away in free agency. I feel that they won’t because of the shrewdness of Zaidi. And I would think that the front office would put their trust in him and Harris etc. After all, with all that Zaidi has accomplished, why would they not. I say get starting pitching on 2 (maybe 3) year deals. One outfielder that fits their hitting ideal. Originally, I was hoping for Semien but he’ll want a ransom AND he’d possibly re-create the mistakes other teams made that you listed. Heck I’m not even sure signing Bryant is wise.
Orel Saxhiser
claude raymond, Since it’s really hard to win 100 games two years in a row, the Giants might take a step back in 2022 with their win/loss record. Fans shouldn’t lose sight of the big picture. Already, we are seeing Padres fans suggesting that hiring Bochy as manager will cure their team’s problems. Yet one of the teams they’re chasing got better after Bochy stepped down. I’m not suggesting Bochy had become a problem for the Giants; just that building a winner is way more complex than hiring the “right” field manager. And let’s not forget those fans in my home area of Philadelphia who thought Kapler was the problem with the Phillies and how they needed a proven winner like Girardi. There’s a lesson there somewhere.
I agree regarding Bryant. Teams need to stop rewarding players for the success they had elsewhere. Most of the time, signing someone his age to a long-term deal ends poorly. My gut tells me they will stick to their plan rather than going on a spending spree. It should be an intriguing winter for both Giants and Dodgers fans. I’m curious what the fallout from Bauer will be, what with Kasten essentially throwing Friedman under the bus over AF’s vetting. It worries me, quite frankly.
Good luck the rest of the way. Whatever happens, I feel the wildcard round should not be a single-game elimination. Baseball has never been about sudden death. It’s about winning the series be it regular or post-season. I’d like to see MLB move to a best-of-three at the home park of the team with the better record. That gives both teams a chance to rebound from a single loss. That would better represent the essence of baseball and its scheduling, which is winning the rubber game if a series is tied 1-1. The best teams tend to rack up the most two-out-of-threes during the season.
claude raymond
Cey Hey, 1) I agree with your wild card suggestion. imagine SF or LA going one and done in that game. 2) in the Giants’ first series against Phils, Kapler way out managed Girardi 3) there is no way Bochy could be as successful as Kaplers been and 4) this has never been mentioned in the media. Kapler was only able to bring in a couple of his own guys (like minded thinkers) and the rest of his staff were holdovers. Yes, he made mistakes but look what he’s done with his current, hand picked staff.
claude raymond
Oops, item 4 left out that I was referring to his Phils staff/holdovers
Orel Saxhiser
claude raymond. Given their past working relationship, it spoke volumes to me when Zaidi hired Kapler so soon after the Phillies let him go. In my view, Zaidi is one of the top front-office minds in the game who knew exactly what he was getting in Kapler. You can pretty much guarantee that Kapler the former farm director will be fantastic working with young players. But what really impressed me was early in 2020 when there was controversy in how Gabe was handling the starting pitchers. The pitchers took their complaints to Kapler, who not only listened to them but changed his ways. None of that my-way-or-the-highway nonsense. It takes an outstanding leader to do that. Their clubhouse must be an absolute joy where everyone realizes their input matters. I think Kapler will be a successful manager for a long time.
Re the wildcard. Since we will eventually have 32 teams, I would be okay with realigning the divisions similar to what the N BA has though with 12 playoff teams instead of 16. The top teams in each division get a first-round bye with teams three-through-six playing opening-round best of threes. Aside from being incredibly exciting, it would be fairer than what we have now with multiple teams tanking in some divisions. In fact, it might discourage tanking since there are two additional chances to make the post-season.
Rsox
Ownership wanted Ron Washington, Preller wanted Tingler. Ownership gave Preller the money he needed to win twice and it hasn’t happened. I can see both Preller and Tingler being shown the door when the season is over if the Padres don’t make the playoffs

I like most of the team. They are a bit short on pitching and management. This team is close.
I would like to void Hosmer’s contract and move on from Myers and Pham. Bring in 3 or 4 more starting pitchers and add to the bullpen.
Orel Saxhiser
If a team, needs to bring in three or four starting pitchers in one off-season, then they aren’t ready to contend. As for the offense, it’s a steep drop from Tatis and Machado to the next best Padre. It is an ordinary roster with very few homegrown players who are proven MLB contributors. Really, just Tatis. At some point, a vaunted farm system has to turn out some solid MLB contributors. Why haven’t the Padres done that?
Rsox
Padres will still have Darvish and Snell under contract for next season. They should get Clevinger back early if not to start the year. Musgrove, Paddack, Lamet, Weathers, and Gore are still there so the need for “3 or 4” more starting pitchers isn’t necessarily there, they just need the guys that they have to pitch to the abilities we’ve seen from them before.
The bullpen on every team is usually fluid, usually in flux. Most of this years bullpen is under contract for next season so i would only expect minor tweeks.
There is no voiding Hosmer’s contract and unless the Padres want to attach Gore or whatever is left in their farm system to to him or Myers you’re probably not trading either one. Pham is a free agent though and not likely to return as the team tries to figure out how to get Tatis, Cronenworth, Frazier, and Kim/Profar regular AB’s

AJ Preller is the worst GM in baseball. How does he keep his job after trading away a top 5 farm system twice? And failing to win with the players he got?
Ownership allowed him to spend 11ty billion dollars, hire his buddy from Texas to manage and now they don’t hold him responsible?

Is Dave Cameron staying on ?
LordD99
Depends how they view their analytics department in relation to the down season. Dave is listed as a senior analyst, but also a special assistant to the GM, so he’s likely not in the cross-hairs. Analytics types generally aren’t the types that get blown out. Now if Preller and his GM are bounced, then a complete new team generally follows. That doesn’t seem to be happening here.
JoeBrady
But this extremely aggressive front office’s inability to land any rotation help was one of the more surprising takeaways immediately after the deadline
===================================================
The issue is the massive amount of prospects that Preller traded away, and the massive amount of payroll he assumed. Two years ago, he could’ve traded spare parts from the farm for a guy like Scherzer.
