Idioms for Idiots
What would possess anyone to think Lester is HOF worthy? If it’s because he just won his 200th game, then that’s pathetic that we have been reduced to considering a player who got in only because he won 200. 300 wins, sure, but not 200.
Good pitcher, but not even close to HOF worthy.
Then again, the HOF has turned into the Hall of the Very Good over the last several years, so you never know. But I would really hope 200 wins isn’t the new magic number for the HOF.
Jordo87
Well 3 world series wins 2 with Boston 1 with the Cubs (curse breaker)should be a consideration I wouldn’t say 1st few ballots but maybe later down the road
Fever Pitch Guy
John Lackey won 3 World Series also, does that mean he deserves to be in the HOF?
It’s a team sport ya know, just sayin’ …
The Mets "Missed WAR"
I don’t think he’s a hall of famer. My guess is people look at the fact that he was a very good pitcher in his prime and he won championships with big fan base teams who were both at one time considered cursed. The fact he beat cancer and came back always seems to make the masses root for a player more, too. Some people put a lot of importance on off the field obstacles. I don’t think he makes it in this though. If every guy with 3 WS championships made it in the HOF would be so diluted it would be worthless. We’ll probably never see another 300 game winner though so that number could go down. At the same time wins could just go out the window altogether because a lot of people Have realized they don’t mean a pitcher is actually good.
bhambrave
Team World Series wins shouldn’t have any bearing. How he did personally in the post-season is valid, but not how his team did.
Fever Pitch Guy
I’m a Lester fan, and I agree with you. The dude has never won a Cy, never led the league in ERA or WHIP or K’s etc. I don’t even know if he’d make the Red Sox HOF.
Black_Pearl
If he had those accolades would he be a HOF? Scherzer has 190 wins but has 3 CYs. If his career ended today does he make it to Cooperstown? Not choosing a side, just asking.
Joe says...
Easy call on Scherzer. Yes he would.
bhambrave
Agreed. Scherzer gets in.
fox471 Dave
Scherzer definitely goes in first ballot.
Fever Pitch Guy
Cheap Seat, one of the main requirements for HOF status is to have dominated for at least a portion of your career. That’s why a HOF’er like Drysdale got in despite retiring at age 32. If you’ve never been the best for a period of time, it’s a lot harder to get in. Lester was very good, but never the best.
Black_Pearl
As I stated, not choosing a side. Only asking if earning hardware changes things. Scherzer is clearly one of the best pitchers of the last few decades.

So, who might trade for DeJong?

To the response on Conforto accepting the QO – it seems to completely ignore the possibility that he bounces back next year and is able to secure a better long term contract than he would get this offseason, even if there are teams that like him. So it’s not just about losing 7m this year.
SDHotDawg
The consensus is that Preller’s going to fire (another) manager and most of the coaching staff, whom he hired. After 7 years, maybe ownership should seriously consider firing Preller.
He already fired Geaney, his Farm Director, who was one of his first hires as GM. When will he blame himself?
bhambrave
With so many pitching injuries, maybe they should fire the medical staff.
SDHotDawg
All teams have had injuries. They plan for them when they can and plug holes when they need. The Padres roster is so thin, they were having bullpen games in April, long before the trade deadline. That’s 100% on Preller.
Deleted_User
Extended through 2026. And he was already signed through 2022 before they extended him which means his most recent extension hasn’t even started yet.
SDHotDawg
Name a manager or GM who wasn’t fired in mid-contract.

I know the cardinals seem like they need pitching but the rotation is kinda set for next year…Flaherty, Waino, Mikolas, Hudson, and Reyes…then you have Libetore and others waiting in the minors…I’m not saying they can’t improve that but realistically the cardinals will probably roll with that…maybe resign Lester or Happ…so where does the money go…maybe bullpen and what else but shortstop…I know it doesn’t seem probable but I can see Arenado maybe enticing Story to come to St. Louis? Just a thought but looking at the FA market I just don’t see how the cardinals will improve their rotation unless Max wants to play in front of his home town…unless of course they pull off a trade
baseballpun
I’d like to see KK back if he’s healthy and another starter would be good. But I agree that I’d rather see a big SS upgrade than a middle of the rotation arm.
cards81
I would rather see Lester than KK IMO…but a lefty would be nice
Dad
No way, Give me youth and KK and his great attitude. Lester is doing what he does, throws balls low and outside until he can tell the umpire terrible things he will do to his family, then that’s a strike!
cards81
I understand that look at it…but I see Lester as a veteran who can still pitch and wants to win…but I agree youth is intriguing

Is it true Devin Williams is on the Rookie of the Year list this year? He won last year but didn’t pitch all that much. He has great stats again, but I doubt he has a chance with so many others doing great.
Has any player received Rookie of the Year votes in 2 years?
BobGibsonFan
Greg Jeffries in ’88 and ’89. I looked it up. He was 6th and then 3rd.
