Alex Dickerson has been placed on the 10-day injured list, as the Giants announced that the outfielder is suffering from a right hamstring strain. Mauricio Dubon has been called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move.
This is the third time Dickerson has visited the IL this year, with slightly more than the minimum amount of time missed due to an upper back strain and a right shoulder impingement. The Giants are surely hopeful of another brief absence since the team will want all hands on deck in the battle with the Dodgers for the NL West crown. Considering the timing, however, anything more than a minor strain could threaten to sideline Dickerson for the remainder of the season.
These cumulative injuries could explain Dickerson’s struggles this year, after batting .286/.350/.529 with 16 homers over 360 plate appearances in 2019-20. This year, Dickerson is hitting only .235/.303/.426 with 13 homers in 304 PA, with much less hard contact and dropoffs in both his strikeout and walk rates. After tearing up right-handed pitching in the previous two seasons, the left-handed hitting Dickerson has managed just a .719 OPS in 278 PA against righties in 2021.
The Giants do have outfield depth to make up for Dickerson’s loss, as Kris Bryant could see more time as a corner outfielder now that Evan Longoria is back from the injured list and ready to assume third base duties. With LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski toggling back and forth between center and right field, the Giants could also shift Wade to left field duty, or use Austin Slater or Darin Ruf. The versatile Dubon’s return also adds a bit more infield help considering that Donovan Solano and Wilmer Flores are both still on the IL.

He’s so bad… really hope he’s not on the playoff roster
vincent k. mcmahon
I’m just curious as to why you find Alex Dickerson bad?
andyhighroller
Since the start of August(his last 77 PA) he’s been hitting .286/.351/.500 with an OPS of .851.
The Giants as a team, however are .236/.304/.414 w/OPS of .718 in that period of time.
He’s absolutely had a down year overall, but he’s also spent the last 2 years as a real solid bat that’s earned his spot and is part of the reason they are where they are.
The guys they added may not have signed last summer if not for the performances of guys like Dickerson and Yaz these last two years.
They keep sending Dickerson out there for the same reason they keep running Yaz out there. They’ve carried the team in the past and it’s not like they’re 35, they’re 31yo’s that could still be valuable come playoff time.
Dickerson’s more likely to hit a walkoff HR in the NLCS than Travis Ishikawa.
wiggysf
I mean, sure, but it also feels like he goes through a cold stretch every two weeks. He was 2 for his last 17 before he got injured. Combine that with the fact that his batting stance makes his ABs look uninspiring, and he’s definitely been one of the Giants’ fanbase’s very least favorite players this year. Although, Brandon Belt is also on that list, which has never made sense to me
andyhighroller
He’s actually not lmfao & he’s been one of the hottest hitters in baseball recently pal- -where you been???
Since the start of August he’s hit.286/.351/.500 with an OPS of .851,
while the team as a whole has hit just .236/.304/.414 w/OPS of .718 in that time period.
Without him, those team batting numbers would be worse.
This injury comes at bad time and frankly, that’s been the story of Alex Dickerson in SF-as soon as he gets hot/comfortable, he gets hurt then has to come back and
figure it out again.
He’s a big part of why they had a franchise best 19-11 record in August.
vincent k. mcmahon
I posed the question to Baseball 1600, so I don’t know if this meant for me or them. I’ll just say that every time I can peak a Giants game AD is one of the reasons.

Good article, Even though I watch them often on MLB.TV this site gives more information as to what’s going on. Thanks!

The Giants.LOL
Oldest roster in baseball is struggling to hit the ball and the pitching staff is running on fumes
Giantsfan775
Says the guy whose team is 15 games back of the “Oldest roster in baseball is struggling to hit the ball and the pitching staff is running on fumes.”
The real LOL here is San Diego’s playoff chances. All that talent, and choking it all away in unspectacular fashion. Classic Padres!

To say nothing of the fact that TonyGwynnSD19 is a monotonous troll who always spews the same anti-Giants drivel. He or she never adds anything intelligent to the conversation.

What the sad part is I’m predicting Bruce Bochy will be the next manager of the Padres next season. It will be sad to see him in any other uniform but the Giants, but I see it happening.

Best record in baseball LOL how the Pad’s doing? Still fighting for that 2nd Wild Card spot ay? I remember dreaming about the Wild Card. Have fun.
You must forget the Giants teams that 2014 and 2016 they got in via the Wild Card, fam, we’re not trippin
Good luck with Tatis in RF tho, maybe he can figure out defense out there…
Redwolves3
Zaidi did nothing before trade deadline to strengthen the starting pitching and now it’s beginning to catch up with them.
tedtheodorelogan
I’m afraid I’m going to have to agree with you. That was entirely short sighted.
atuck_sfg
It’s a rebuilding team that’s tied for the best record in baseball, this wasn’t supposed to happen. No point in ruining the future of the team for this season, I’m just happy if they make playoffs, winning the division would just be a bonus on an already remarkable season
Redwolves3
Zaidi … really!!! 2 bullpen (Leone) games in a row with the Dodgers!!!

TGwynn. How did the Padres & that big payroll work out for you this year? Bam! Roasted! Buh-bye
TonyGwynnSD19
And they still got 27 to play….Approximately 240 Innings to cover. What a joke
FletcherFan66
I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if the Pads or Reds BTFO them in the wild card game. I’ll bet my house on it
andyhighroller
I think most of baseball and the rational thinkers in the world would be surprised. Considering, you know, math. And like, odds and stuff? Statistics. It’s this hot new thing the kids have been raving about the last few hundred years or so. Stuff like 2 is more than 1, sorry I that’s pretty advanced.
tstats
Was that beat the frick out of them for BTFO?
Giantsfan775
I wonder how much of a joke your owner must think that roster is? You know, given the exorbitant salary commitments and all. That’s a ton of money to pay for third place!

Says the guy whose team will be conducting yet another fire sale in a year or so

Also next Monday and Wednesday.

So what you are saying is if the Padres won every game for the rest of the year and the Giants played 500 ball the Giants would still be ahead of Padres?

Check out his fellow high school alumni who are on current rosters. Connor Joe is also on the DL…

Anyone trying to defend Dickerson is a joke….the guy has never been able to stay healthy. Consider yourself lucky to have gotten the production you have

How about the BMI’s for John Kruk, David Wells, CC Sabathia, Kyle Schwarber, Babe Ruth? This isn’t basketball. See the ball, hit the ball.

IF the Giants decide to re-sign Dickerson in 2022 (I doubt it), they will need to do so knowing he is likely to miss lots of time on the IL AND that he’s best suited to be a left-handed platoon at DH. Otherwise they’re burying their heads in the sand. THe guy just isn’t that great and the Giants can do better.
So. Cal. Giants fan
I’m not sure how Arbitration works, but I believe Dickerson is arbitration edible 3 and becomes a free agent in 2023.

I realize the pitching staff has had a bunch of injuries, but I don’t understand the so-called “bull pen” games, especially versus the hated ones? Does the organization not have anyone in the minors capable of being called up and trying to give us 5-6 innings? How about Sammy Long?? IMHO some of the relievers don’t feel comfortable with the role of pitching early in games, especially Jose Alvarado! Any thoughts??
