The Cubs have activated Willson Contreras from the injured list, and in a corresponding move, they have placed Keegan Thompson on the 10-day IL with right shoulder inflammation, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter).
Contreras went on the injured list back on August 12 because of a right knee sprain. He’s the rare familiar face in the Cubs lineup, though he hasn’t been there of late. Austin Romine and Robinson Chirinos have handled the catching duties in his absence. On the year, Contreras has hit .226/.333/.417, good or a 105 wRC+, a solid mark from behind the plate.
Thompson was excellent for the Cubs in small samples out of the pen, but he has struggled while getting a few turns in the rotation. In total, the 26-year-old righty owns a 3.54 ERA/5.13 FIP across 48 1/3 innings with the big league club. Thompson’s spot in the rotation is due to come up again on Tuesday against the Reds.

Cubs may not even lose 90 games. Surprise rookies helping!
Bart Harley Jarvis
This wouldn’t be the same Keegan Thompson of SNL fame? I’m just asking a question.
everlastingdave
What’s up with that?

The pitching is obviously awful but the lineup is surprisingly pretty productive. Scoring probably just as many runs as the team prior to the deadline. At least it’s nice to see some new guys who genuinely are trying.
Adolpho67
Yeah actually they had same record (9-21) 30 games before the deadline as 30 games after the trades and the team hitting is improved…and this is after removing Bryant, Rizzo, & Báez!
Obviously, the starting pitching still sucks.
jims1969
I know that most people were upset at the moves but they were probably 2 years too late. Bryant was NOT going to re-sign unless it was a 300m offer … no way IMO. Although Baez makes some spectacular plays there are just way too many holes. Maybe Rizzo was brought back but he is breaking down. These are facts.
The team went through how many hitting coaches? Why? These dudes were selfish and uncoachable, that’s why.
Did the front office make mistakes? A whole bunch in an effort to win another and support the “core”.
Love all of them but time to start anew. Everyone, over time, is replaced by someone.
Fred K. Burke
The starting pitching not so good. The line up has been decent. Michael Hermosillo needs to be in the line up every day the remainder of the season to see what he can do. Pending if he’s injured or has an illness. Jason Heyward should be on the bench. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if you see Wisdom, Schwindel, Ortega be part of the starting team in 2022. Hopefully for the Cubs some free agent help is coming in 2022.

Keegan has the tools, but he’s just not ready for prime time yet.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Agreed. He’s not a ready for prime time player yet.

I’m looking forward to the off season. Proud of Wisdom, Ortega and Schwindel. Let’s see if our Cubs will load up on starting pitching.

These guys are really tryin’. I went tired of seen Rizzo, Baez and Bryant not doing their best. The game which Baez was lost regarding how many outs there were, and he almost never sprint to first base. Ross took him off that game and it was the start of the debacle. Then Contreras complaints to Rizzo because he wasn’t playing hard, I think he was right all along.
Cubs Dynasty
Agrorolm . Yes, I’m right with you on that Baez and Rizzo matter.
