The latest on coronavirus-related situations around baseball…
- The Tigers placed right-hander Joe Jimenez on the COVID-related injury list yesterday due to a positive test. First base coach George Lombard also tested positive, while pitching coach Chris Fetter, quality control coach Josh Paul and bullpen catcher Jeremy Carroll are away from the team due to contact tracing procedures. Jimenez and Lombard were fully vaccinated but are both experiencing symptoms, manager A.J. Hinch told The Detroit News’ Chris McCosky and other reporters. Jimenez has struggled to a 6.15 ERA over 41 innings out of the Tigers bullpen this season, largely due to control problems. After posting an 8.3% walk rate over his first four MLB seasons, Jimenez’s total has ballooned to 16.7% this season.

Can’t win with bums like Jimenez (and the Mets’ stinking Edwin Diaz) in your ‘pen. Awful trade a few years ago—promising reliever Drew Smith for that Mikie Mahtook garbage.

Glad that JaCoby Jones is gone—Niko Goodrum has to be next (w/Jimenez). Team needs a little tweaking, a little retooling, and a little more experience—how about a free agent veteran slugger for the OF and decisions made to stabilize the lineup? Been a huge, nonstop, loyal Tigers fan since ‘66, and this year I loved what I saw—the young starters, Baddoo, and the promise of Tork & Greene (I was at one of Riley’s very first games: Connecticut Tigers at Tri-City Valleycats—loved what I saw).

@al. I am not a tigers fan although who couldn’t admire Miggy? I see what you mean on Niko who now is 29 and doesn’t offer much with the bat. He plays multiple positions though and I can see a little value in that. I have been following Tork/Riley Greene a little. Tigers pitching is looking better these days. Future is looking good for Detroit.

Jimenez has a 5-1 W/L-ratio, better than any other pitcher. This is by no means a measure of quality, but statements like “you can’t win with bums like these” is still utter nonsense. Jimenez had a horrible spring, but improved after being sent down to AAA.
