Marlins third baseman Brian Anderson will undergo surgery next week to repair a subluxation in his left shoulder, the team informed reporters (including Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald). The team is hopeful he’ll be ready for Spring Training in 2022.
Anderson was already expected to be out for the rest of this season, and Craig Mish of the Herald reported last week that surgery was a possibility. It’s the second shoulder subluxation of the season for Anderson, who also missed two and a half months earlier in the year with a similar issue. Coupled with a brief IL stint for an oblique strain, those injuries limited Anderson to 264 plate appearances. The 28-year-old hit .249/.337/.378 with seven home runs in that time.
It was the least productive season of Anderson’s four-year big league career. He entered the year as a career .266/.349/.431 hitter. Along with his reliable defense at the hot corner, Anderson had been one of the Marlins’ more consistent performers. While his walk and strikeout rates weren’t meaningfully changed this year, his power production and batted ball metrics took a step back — perhaps in part due to his ongoing shoulder issues.
Anderson will be eligible for arbitration a second time this offseason. He agreed to a $3.8MM salary last winter and is slated to go through the process twice more before reaching free agency after the 2023 season. The Marlins and Anderson had discussed potential extension terms in the past, but new general manager Kim Ng said last winter that she preferred to evaluate Anderson’s 2021 season before reengaging in talks. With Anderson coming off a campaign diminished by injury, it seems the front office will continue to proceed year-by-year through the arbitration process for the time being.

I think that he will be non-tendered
some guy 2
Dude was super consistent before he got hurt. Worth tendering an offer.

He’ll be brought back for at least one more season. No way they cut ties.

No one to really take his place either. They would have to sign one of the major SS in FA and move someone to third…. Then have a hole at second. We all know that’s not happening. And I never want to see Isan Diaz in uniform unless it’s after a whole year in the minors. They won’t call up Bryce Brigman yet they play Alfaro, Brinson, and Isan all day. So no way they don’t bring BA bacm.
MarlinsFanBase
Exactly everyone. Anderson is a good player when healthy. The Marlins have no replacement for him unless they waste money on a big free agent. Good that BA is getting fixed for next year.
This should be an interesting offseason for the Marlins. They have the pitching. Their bullpen sucks (especially Bass). The lineup needs a couple of run producers to go along with Aguilar, a healthy Anderson, and a developing Sanchez. The table setting part seems good with a developing Jazz and seeing how legit de la Cruz is. Rojas is solid for another year. It looks like Lewin Diaz and Alex Jackson need more seasoning. Time to accept that Alfaro, Brinson, Isan Diaz and Magneuris Sierra aren’t starting players. We will need to look at bats at catcher, corner OF and 1B/DH (assuming that we get a DH). It couldn’t hurt to look at a future middle infielder since Rojas is just a stopgap.
All of our offseason will depend on how confident the Marlins are about their starting staff right now being playoff caliber and healthy for the longevity of a 162-game season (maybe a 6-man staff would make sense). Based on that, they can determine what type of commitment they make with the lineup. No matter what, they know that there are some trade matchups with teams that lack pitching, who have some young MLB bats like the Blue Jays and Orioles. We have the pitching surplus to get a couple of young bats from those teams. For a catcher, we have the prospect surplus to pick up a veteran catcher that can hit, like perhaps Willson Contreras.
Should be interesting, but it all depends on where Jeter, Ng and Co. view where are starting pitchers are in development. Are they there or not? If the pitching is there, then we can’t waste years waiting for the hitters to catchup because arms get hurt and the healthy good ones get expensive.
Fever Pitch Guy
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

He won’t get a substantial raise and as long as he’s not out for the year, don’t see why they’d risk Losing him for nothing
If it’s invasive surgery and he’s out all of 2022, that’s a new conversation
Joseph McBrody
I remember when his dad pitched for the Diamondbacks. He had exceptional control but couldn’t strike anybody out, and he was one of those eccentric weirdos too.

You’re being cheeky, yeah? No relation whatsoever.
