The Blue Jays announced that Cavan Biggio has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Left-hander Ryan Borucki has been optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move.
Biggio’s 2021 struggles will be quickly forgotten if he can contribute to Toronto’s playoff push, though it has thus far been a season to forget for the 26-year-old. Biggio was a very solid contributor in his first two big league seasons, but he has hit only .215/.316/.350 in 290 plate appearances while battling multiple injuries. He first missed three weeks due to a cervical spine ligament sprain, and hasn’t played since August 2 after returning to the IL for a back strain. That IL stint was elongated by an elbow injury Biggio suffered while playing in a minor league rehab game, setting back his progress once again.
Biggio has already played multiple positions during his young career, but the Jays had him penciled in as their regular third baseman heading into the season. That still seems like Biggio’s likeliest role upon his return, as the hot corner has been a bit of a revolving door when Biggio has been out of action. Santiago Espinal and Breyvic Valera have played respectably well at the position, and the recently-designated Jake Lamb was also briefly brought in while Espinal was also recovering from an injury. With Lourdes Gurriel Jr. still day-to-day and George Springer only just returned to center field duty, Biggio might also get some time in the Blue Jays’ outfield picture.
Good.
We owe these guys, man. The last time we played them they beat us up, stole our lunch money, & goosed our girl on the way out of town. Pretty ugly series.
Seven straight after tonight.
Should be a good series, essentially is a playoff series.
Hopefully the Sox can stumble a bit to make things really interesting
Pretty much, @lambchops.
Biggest series of the year for the Yanks anyway. Taillon Vs Ryu tonight. So starts with a good one. Hoping the Yanks can keep our little winning streak going.
Looking forward to this one, man.
Cavan Biggio is a second baseman and a good one at that. When healthy, he can be an above-average everyday player. The only problem is that the current Blue Jays second baseman has the most home runs in a season by a second baseman in major league history.
So he’s kinda stuck. No, he’s not a third baseman, he should be playing second.
In a way, he’s just blocked on the roster. Though if he produces there will be a place for him.
Cavan hasn’t hit enough this year to justify playing time over any of the jays utility players. I agree he’s not a third baseman but if he hit they would have found a way to keep him in the lineup.
He seemed to find his stroke in AAA so hopefully he can contribute in the last week. At his best he gives a different look than the rest of the lineup (being lefty and being patient)
If Toronto re-signs Semien to a multi-year deal then they should consider trading Biggio. He is not a 3B or a utility player. He needs to play everyday. He is a solid 2B and the Jays could definitely get a good return for him
We need to find a way to get Tatis, Jr. on the Blue Jays. Vlad at 1st, Bichette at 2nd, Tatis at short, Biggio at 3rd.
No idea how they’d get tatis while still keeping Vlad and Bo
While likely impossible to happen, it would be all players who had fathers that were MLB stars which would be pretty cool but mainly irrelevant.
Toronto would literally have to offer their entire farm system and possibly someone else’s to get Tatis. As far as the legacy players go Tatis is the only one of the 4 who is already better than his father.
Why stop there. Get Daulton Varsho to Catch, Travis Shaw to DH get Cody Bellinger/Dee Strange-Gordon/Dwight Smith Jr to play the OF and Dereck Rodriguez to Pitch and have the all sons of former big leaguers
The lineup would be:
2B Cavan Biggio
3B Bo Bichette
1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
SS Fernando Tatis Jr.
CF Cody Bellinger
DH Travis Shaw
RF Dwight Smith Jr.
C Daulton Varsho
LF Dee Strange-Gordon
You can make an argument Vladdy is better than his father too, at least to this point. Vlad Sr’s career hitting numbers are surprisingly low compared to what I remember from him, not that he wasn’t a HoF player.
Vlad Sr. did not have the raw power Vlad Jr. -has at this point in his career but Sr. had an incredible batting eye. You couldn’t get anything by him, not even bouncing the ball could get it passed him, Jr. isn’t there yet offensively. We won’t compare defense as they did not play the same positions
Not sure what you’re talking about really.
By the numbers Jr, in his age 22 season, is having a better offensive season than his HOF father has ever had.
If we’re being fair 21 of Vlad’s HR’s came in minor league ballparks so ballpark factor should be considered when comparing the two. And Vlad Sr.’s 2000 season was every bit as good as Jr.’s season this year and he played half his games in the cavernous Olympic Stadium
And just when it looked like the Jays might have a chance at the playoffs 🙁
Sounds like Rendon of the Angels this year. Several (uncharacteristic) injuries and never properly recovering. They’ll both kill it next year.
When is he going to get out in the lineup. Sure he struggled earlier on but so did a lot of Jays.
MLB network had him featured as a top 100 expected player in a preseason feature….they need him running at 100%, his left bat, his eye, and his cost certainty over the next 7 years.
