The Angels have selected the contract of southpaw Jhonathan Diaz and added him to the active roster to start tonight’s ballgame, the team announced. Diaz, 25, will be making his Major League debut.
The Angels also reinstated righty Jose Marte from the injured list. Marte, 25, made just one appearance this season, and in fact, for his career thus far, tossing two scoreless innings against Cleveland on August 20. He was originally signed by the Giants and sent to the Angels this season as part of the Tony Watson deal.
In terms of departures, veteran Junior Guerra was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and Elvis Peguero was returned to Triple-A. Guerra has soaked up his share of innings for the halos this season, though he’s struggled to the tune of a 6.06 ERA/4.74 FIP over those 65 1/3 innings. Peguero made just three appearances with the club totaling 2 1/3 innings.

Angels & NL West
I’m hopeful Marte can be a BP piece next year. Good velo and lots of movement on his pitches based on Suzuki’s inability to catch him in Friday’s game.

I recently watched the Angels /Oakland game where Oakland won 3-2 in 10 innings. What I found particularly disturbing was the commentators other then being a dull as dishwater they kept going on and on about Ohtami and being the primary MVP candidate. And that to me is a total mystery.
MVP means Most Valuable Player in the Al or NL and frankly Ohtami does have those credentials. He is a very good player but he’s far from being the MVP. If he wins that title it won’t be because of his play on the field it will be because he’s unique, an asian player who can pitch and hit very well.
But the facts Angels aren’t going to the post season they have been eliminated. Ohtami doesn’t appear in the top 45 starting pitchers in either league, Ohtami is 5th in hitting and fading, and strikes out much more then the ranking top 5. And lets remember he plays nearly every day but he pitches in the rotation every 5 days and he dh’s in between (dh is not a position player in the field.
Every team still in contention in the AL for post season as at least one and some even more candidates that are far more deserving. But that said he’ll likely win not because he deserves it but because MLB and the people who vote like to be trendy.

knotz – MVP is an individual player performance award so the player’s team success has no bearing on it. For example, Trout has won it three times (2014 2016 2019) and came in second 4 times (2012 2013 2015 2019). Only one of his wins came in a season when the Angels finished over .500. His other two wins came in seasons when the team finished 74-88 and 72-90. As a runner up, two of the four seasons the Angels finished under .500. In that stretch, the team made it to the playoffs once, in 2014.
This year Ohtani is pitching to a 3.28 ERA with 146 strike outs over 123.1 innings. He also has a 1.11 WHIP. Per Baseball Reference, he has the best WAR at 8.2 and he’s hit 45 home runs and stolen 23 bases. BTW, he also hits on the days he pitches. While seldom, he has played defensive positions this year in order to keep his bat in the lineup on days he has pitched after he was relieved by the BP.
He’s not the best pitcher, he’s not the best hitter. But there is no one performing at his level while doing both. I believe that’s why he has earned the MVP this year.

As I said your not awarding him MVP based on his actual record but rather that he playes nearly every day. You admit he doesn’t excel to the top as either a pitcher or a hitter only that he plays every day. Your argument about Trout doesn’t bear out because in those years Trout was the top player in the league on a losing team.
And what about players like Vladimir Guerrero who has played more innings then Ohtami, Is likely the best hitter in the league and fields a position that he also excels at. Or Marc Seimen who also hits extremely well and fields a position.. It is just my beliief that Ohtami will be handed the MVP not because of his play on the field but because he is unique in being able to hit above average and pitch on a team going nowhere soon, and the fact that he’s an import makes it appetizing to MBL who seems set on displaying records real or contrived.

knotz – I understand your take, however it is the Most Valuable Player award, not the Best Player award. Ohtani’s ability to pitch and hit above average makes him the most valuable player in the AL in my opinion.
