Outfielder Abraham Almonte has elected free agency after clearing outright waivers, relays David O’Brien of the Athletic (Twitter link). The Braves designated him for assignment last week.
This season, Almonte has logged his most significant big league action since 2017. Selected to the major league roster in late May, the switch-hitter picked up 175 plate appearances with Atlanta. He got off to a strong start but his production tailed off beginning in late June. Overall, Almonte posted a league average .216/.331/.399 line while spending most of his time in left field.
Almonte has picked up at least some MLB time in each of the past nine seasons. The 32-year-old is free to pursue opportunities elsewhere for the season’s final few weeks, although he won’t be eligible for postseason play because he was let go after August 31.
KBO/NBP?
Albert Almonte, Albert Almora and Manuel Margot are not even real. They are listed on the Sycamore Bishop roster under the Athlete position.
He can’t hit.
I mean, give him a little more credit. He’s definitely not amazing, but he puts up good AB’s and walks a little. That said, yea, he’s terrible lol
What do you expect from Bobby cox
Kevan Smith can’t hit and he has proven that you don’t need to do something as trivial as hitting to be a MLB player. If you’ve got a dream of being a pro baseball player – don’t let “can’t hit” stop you. Can’t never can.
Jeff Mathis is one of the worst modern hitters in baseball, yet he clearly was wanted in some capacity because he’s in the middle of a 17-year career.
He’s got an OBP of .331, his rOBA is .323 (league average is .324) despite having a BAbip .040 lower than average. Finally his ISO is .184 (league average is .154)
In summary, he may not be great, but he’s slightly above replacement level.
Here I thought he was horrible when he played in Cleveland and then I looked at his numbers and it was the peak of his MLB career production.
When will MLB Trade rumours do an article about the incompetence on the instant replay/review, it has cost the Braves 2 games, and their last 4 reviews were all incorrect decisions made by umpires and the review system needs a seeing eye dog in New York who could do a better job. Riley was safe, Rosario was safe, Bohm still hasn’t touched home plate, and Freeman was safe at home. The system is an absolute farce.
This is what happens when there is no discipline for bad umpire calls. It seems to be a club where they umps all protect each other. First step needs to be a robot ump strike zone. It’s pretty sad when I can get on my smart phone pull up the strike zone and watch balls/strikes called wrong. Rookie umpires make $150K to senior umpires around $450K. The players and fans deserve better.
Wait.. who’s the real Fred.
We need a crime dog to figure this out!
The replay guys in New York should be making their own call, but they’re not. All they do is judge whether the umps on the field got it right or not. It may seem like they’re the same thing, but they’re not.
Y’all want to solve the problem, you have to know what it is. It’s not on field.
Baseball is in an era of being plagued on field by union demands off it.
Crime a Dog couldn’t agree more. Replay killed us, not sure what they are looking at. Especially on Freeman and Riley. Rosario was a tougher call but they can’t get it right. We need to take these next two games, important. Riley MVP we may never see camargo again
Instant replay/review, there’s definitely a lot of blame to go around, including the television broadcast. It seems like on many occasions they show the best angle/evidence on the first or second clip, then never go back to it until after the bad judgment had been handed down.
Jeff Francoeur has become one of my favorite analysts.
He and Ron Darling are two of the best and dammit if I don’t like the droning Kirk Gibson on the Tigers telecasts!!
I hear ya Crime dog, it’s 2021 and the technology is out there to get these calls right. You could hear the frustration in Frenchy’s voice over those calls. Umps looked lost after taking headphones off too.
